Practice battles, a great way for both leaders to grow stronger. Also, a chance away from the clans to just interact. Before the practice battles with Brightstar had been a special treat. Now, both a break from everything and a chance to spend a little bit more time with Brightstar was welcomed.
She started with offering her condolences on the loss of the elder. Allowing that sincere comment to sit a few moments, she did bowed to the other leader before going in for the first strike

Brightstar lowered her head. "Yes it was a sad loss, I appreciate your respect to lightningclan though" She stretched her back arching back and then forward. "Although for something like that... especially so soon i would have made allowances." it wasnt at all an admonition but more just future reference, while the clan was the clan, friends were allowed cross clans.
With the respectful dip of the head she fended off that first hit and launched her own.

Shadowstar listened to her unofficial mentor. She had made the wrong call, or perhaps it was better to say she should have spoken with Brightstar before making that call. "I thought it wouldn't be approved, I also worried about Sweetkit. After losing her mover, to see Flamedapple again then to have her leave too has to be confusing for any kit." Pawing at the ground, she added, "Rockclan had a send off, putting the sleeping cat in the river to be guided back to the Silverplet. If it is already too late...well any losses in the future could be mourned together?" Her ears went flat after that. It sounded so stupid and naive to say it that way. The Shecat bopped herself on the head for that one before shaking it off as best she could.
Dodging most of the hit, she still met half of it head on to return the blow close quarters.

Brightrightstar rolled with shadowstar's hit. It stung but by rolling she lessened it some. "Then you made the right call." She purred softly. She wasnt upset, and no one but the two of them need know that she approved that one time of coming back. "The leaders word is code... at least by starclan... " She didnt mean to be preachy. "So even if i allowed it... if you didnt they can not like it, but they have to follow. And you were thinking about sweetkit... and that means the world to me... And while im sure sweetkit could handle it... i thank you for your forethought." She gave a sad look. "Thank you for that... " She shook her head. "No.. as time goes, friendships will dull and the clans will grow apart... best not to keep opening wounds, but friendships, are more powerful than anything." She smiled. "It takes time to be a good leader!" She laughed. "Listen to me... im still not a good leader!" She pounced aiming to knock her off balance.

Taking a moment to still her breath, Shadowstar might have shamed Direstar but she was grateful for Brightstar's words. "It is the same with the Forestclan Code, Leader's word is Code." Forestclan was also a lot more permissive of boarders, that was something Flamedapple would not be happy to learn. She had her reasons, for the good of both clans!
Knocked off her paws, Shadowstar retaliated by kicking out with her back paws. Little less effort to conserve her strength. "Friendships are not forbidden by the Code; however, the separation is too new, the boarder to lightning still has the scents of my cats. The Code does not forbid trespassing; however, I respect you as a leader. Your cat didn't trespass so I did not want to allow the act in turn." There was no one to teach her, she had never even been considered for Deputy. It was just her, making the best decisions she could while factoring the welbeing of all.
She had to add, "We'll both be celestial cats and I'll still be learning from you."

Brightstar nodded in understanding. So some of the codes were the same. How funny. Brightstar oofed and rolled away at the attack before turning to attack again. She went low to knock out her feet. She nodded though. "I completely agree. Time will let them heal what is raw tight now."
She gave a sharpish look. "Well it is still against our code." Which was her warning that the cats that crossed would be challenged. But the sharp look melted away as quickly as it came. "Well thank you... I respect you as well... To be honest you were they only cat i could truely see in the position."
Brightstar laughed. "Dont send me to the stars just yet!"

Of course, time and visits from the celestial cats. There was something that was supposed to be rare yet she heard hear and there that it was becoming uncomfortably normal.
Paws meet sky, Brightstar's attack on her paws caught the overcompensation well off balance. The other leader's sharp look translated very well from her position.
Quickly rolling back over to get into battle position again, Shadowstar had to laugh and tease the other Leader, "Here I thought you liked me." Sentencing her to being Leader, so cruel. That might not have been how it played out, but if anyone understood it would be her. Brightstar never seemed bothered or phased by what was really going on. Oh how she wanted that confidence for herself.
"I woudln't dream of it! Would be cruel to your deputy!" At the moment she couldn't quite place who that was, though it was probably the cat in camp suddenly getting a chill down their spine. Speaking of, she had an attack to respond to.
Going for an old favorite, Shadowstar took a wide turn around Brightstar almost like she was circling but it ended half way with a quick burst of speed to the back paws.

And here Brightstar was using it to her advantage, walking the celestial plains everynight to try and learn more, to talk with shatteredstar... and to stare into the darkness that still chewed at the edge of the starclan border.
Brightstar softened back out fairly quickly and gave an amused purr. "Nope..." it was obvious she was being sarcastic. "Worst warrior ive ever seen... cant run fast... or take a hit and keep fighting... " She rolled her eyes and then laughed out right.
"IT would Im sorry you never got the chance to be deputy though... even the very little time i spent as deputy.... i learned so much.... But i have faith in you!"
She knew the move well but she under compensated the angle and groaned. "OK ok...get off get offf... you win! "
She laughed and struggled to get up but didnt attack again.

Poor Shadowstar could hardly stand strait after Brightstar's first remarks. With quite the dramatic flair, she put her paw over her heart and pretended to be wound. There was no hiding her laughter. The upright ears didn't help her act either.
Clearly her future was in entertainment!
Brightstar having faith in her mattered as much as Direstar, that was probably sacrilegious again. "I have a major advantage you didn't have, thought. I got to watch you lead." The way Brightstar handled everything seemed so effortless. Her compassion to her clan, tolerance of their existance and leadership through the burden of two clans. That she kept them all alive and from killing each other should have earned her praise of the highlest level from the Starclan.
Not that they cared.
Shadowstar obliged her requested, "Alright, alright. Thank you for the practice fight. I look forward to the next meeting." Slowly blinking her eyes, she bowed her own head to Brightstar again. Power wise she might have the advantage but Brightstar had so many more.
Assuming Direstar doesn't kill her over this too, a distinct possibility, this would always be her most treasured fight.
