Some days, it was just too hot and too dry for Kanja to want to get up. The scaled native had taken to the lake, taking up residence in the water. Having gills came in handy, since it allowed him to sleep under water with no worries. Typically, he was able stay pretty deep underwater while sleeping, but some days, he floated to the surface. Unfortunately, the blue skinned boy had floated to the surface this morning while sleeping. He was face down in the water, his limbs floating lifelessly as he slept.

Padparadscha had been craving fish for the last few days and whined a little about it. One of the adults told him to go catch some if he wanted it so badly. So he had grabbed the necessary tools to do so: a pole, tackle, and a brimmed hat to block out the sun. Then he had headed down to the lake.
As he approached, he took an appreciative view of the scenery. It was so beautiful here. Oh but what was that, a log? Floating in the water was an object about the size of a child. "Oh!"
Padparadscha dropped everything to go save the person shaped log but promptly got tangled up in the fishing pole and fishing line. "Ack! No, not now!" He struggled with it for several moments before getting free. The hook had its final say before he had gotten free, however. "Ow..."
Now the boy left his things and ran down to the water and promptly tripped over his own foot. Landing on his chest and chin, he was winded for a moment before he could catch his breath. A skinned chin was rather raw and painful, but he pushed it aside and got to his feet, finally making a final dash for the water.
He jumped in so that he could get to the body. It was blue and cold. He was actually rather terrified to see a dead body. What if he had no eyes, no face? The skin was smooth and easy enough to grip, thankfully, and the body itself would be easy to move through the shallows back to the shore.

He was dreaming. Kanja felt like he was sailing through the sky, outside the dome. The dragon child was about to touch one of the birds he saw flying around when something touched him. Odd. But the touch was insistent, and Kanja felt himself pulling away from the clouds and birds.
With a snort, coming out as a stream of bubbles, Kanja shifted tried to roll over, pulling free of the stranger's grip. Kanja felt the brush of mud against his hands and put his hands against the mud and lifted his face from the water. The dark braids clung to his face and his orange eyes blinked sleepily. "Snurgahh?" He yawned, blinking to try to wake up.

The shallows came quickly, and the water became warmer quite abruptly. When the corpse began to move, Padparadscha cried out in surprise. Then it became obvious that he had awoken a sleeping individual, he noticed the "Gills! Those are gills, right? I am so sorry, I thought you were dead."

Kanja blinked a few more times as the kid talked to him. "Oh!" He pushed the hair out of his face. "You're a new genome!" He looked excited and almost didn't hear what the green-eyed boy said. "Dead? Gills? Oh!" He started laughing. "I sleep in the lake. My gills let me breath in water." He was still laughing, finding everything very amusing. "Who are you? How did you hurt your face?"

"Yes, I am new. My name is Padparadscha." Calming down, he was able to take in more detail and think more rationally. This boy was blue and had gills. So... "You must be a native!"
"My... my face?" He reached up to touch his face and brushed by his chin with a wince. "Oh, that. I tripped and fell on the way, when I thought I was saving you."

"Huh. That's a fancy name." He smiled at the boy. "I'm Kanja." He knew it would take a while to remember the boy's name, but he would do his best. "I'm sorry you got hurt because of me. I don't even have anything to help clean it with. I wouldn't even use the lake water right now. We stirred up some of the mud so it isn't good for cleaning here. I suppose we could swim farther out? But the scrape doesn't look that bad. It isn't even bleeding." He figured it was probably fine.
Kanja finally stood up, stretching and shaking the sleep from his shoulders. He was quite tall and the sun glittered off his scales. "So what brings you to my lake this early in the morning?" He only called it his because he lived in it.

"It's long. You wouldn't believe how many times it took me to learn to spell it," he replied with a grin. "I'm glad to meet you." He tapped his chin again and found that Kanja was right, it was not bleeding. "I'll wash it later, I guess. I'm not too worried about it. And I'm just glad you're all right." He had avoided the possibility of swimming. Since he couldn't swim, simply avoiding it in conversation would save it for another day, right?
Padparadscha tried not to stare when Kanja stood up. Kanja was tall, taller than he was. His scales, now that he noticed them, were golden in the sunlight. And he had fins. "Ah..." He glanced away and back to his fishing gear. "I was going fishing."

"Mmmh. Well, I'm glad that you are alright too. There is a point not much farther in where the bottom of the lake drops off. If you aren't expecting it, I'm afraid you might fall in and drown, unless you're a good swimmer. There are plants that will tangle your feet if you aren't careful." He turned and looked back over the clear waters of the lake. "Fishing, hm? That's always fun. Think it would be ok if I fished with you?" He gave Padparadsha the side-eye, smiling a little and hoping that it would be ok. After all, where else would Kanja go right now? The lake was basically his home.

Padparadscha paled noticeably. If they had been further down the beach there really would have been someone needing saving. But he brightened when Kanja asked to come along. Of course he would enjoy the company. He grinned. "Yes, that would be great! You must know where all the fish like to hide." As it was, all of the splashing and kicking up of sediment had probably scared all the fish away.
"I'll go get my stuff!" He turned to go and jogged over to his fishing gear. On the way he tripped on his foot but did not go down, thankfully! And coming back he did not trip even once. "I didn't trip this time!" Padparadscha grinned ear to ear and promptly fell on his face. At least he wasn't snagged on the fishing line again.

"Well, I guess I do." Kanja smiled. He blushed a little as he watched Padparadsha run and trip to grab his gear. "What is this stuff?" He started, when the brunette fell. He couldn't help it. Kanja started laughing as he held a hand out to the boy. "You seem to have an interesting time staying on your feet." He was a little concerned. "Are you going to be able to fish alright?"

"Fishing gear! Fishing pole with line and hook, and some bait-- live worms!" He took the hand that was offered to him and got back to his feet. "I can't help it. If I get excited and rush off, my legs get all rubbery." And then down he'd go. So this time he tried taking his time. He picked up the pole and bait and made his moves deliberate. It seemed to work. He nodded but didn't jinx himself by exclaiming aloud. Just a broad grin for him. "If I'm more careful like this, I think I'll be all right."

"That seems like a complicated way to fish." With Padparadsha on his feet, Kanja looked at the gear. "I have never used any of that and I catch fish just fine." He was actually very curious about the gear and how it worked. "You have to show me how it works."

"I suppose it is," Padparadscha reflected, looking down at the pole. "Okay, why don't we teach each other how we fish? I would love to use an easier way if I can." What could be easier than fishing this way? It was not that he was lazy, quite the opposite actually. He didn't want to wait hours for just a nibble on the hook. Or just to have the worm nibbled away without so much as a tug. "So where do you think would be a good place to go?"

"Well... the most fish hang out at the bottom of the lake. I don't think I can take you there. Not unless you can breath under water." He was pretty sure genomes could not. Kanja pointed down along the bank. "There is long grass there that fish like to hide in though. We can start there?"
