Smokey River padded quickly but quietly back towards the small cave that had become a makeshift den of sorts since he had med Shadowstep. A lone female, adventuring out from her family that he had ran into and subsequently had been enjoying company with for the past day or so. It was nice to finally have someone to talk to, to share a breeze with or listen to the trickling of a stream together. To watch the night sky and gossip. It had been ages since he had had that.

But back then... she had just. Vanished. Without a trace. And now Smokey had found himself a lone again. At least, until Shadowstep had appeared.

He was hesitant however. To give out his heart again. Having a simple friendship actually meant more to him than he could probably properly convey. So while she slept, Smokey slipped out of the den for a bit of morning hunting, returning with a small prize in his jaws. He padded into the den and dropped it down gently before the female. "Morning! Care for some breakfast?" he chuckled, gesturing to the lifeless hare he had snagged.

Shadowstep didn’t know what she’d find out there. She’d just been curious, nothing more. She’d been told how being a loner was dangerous. How without the protection of her family hunting would be harder and the dangers would be harder to see without more eyes. Even so, the pull to leave had been strong. She wouldn’t be gone long or go very far, she told herself.

Until she met Smokey River. Then the days just started to stretch out. She couldn’t recall how long it had been, but then again she was worried to think too long on it. She didn’t want to break the spell that had been cast over them and their time together. She’d never met another that was so fun to talk to, but especially hunt with. They had fallen into such a beautiful rhythm it was almost like he could read her mind as they stalked prey together. She’d definitely had better meals with him around.

Speaking of, her ears twitches and she popped open an eye as the male entered the den. She’d been awoken when he’d left, but let him go. There had been a measure of anxiety in her heart wondering if today was the day. That’d he’d up and leave and never come back, but she’d just watched him go and hoped. Why would it matter in the end? He had every right to be done when he was done even if she wished it could last. Instead, here he was again. She lifted her head and her tail gave a happy wag as the warmth of joy filled her chest. He managed to do that to her constantly.

“I would, but I’m gonna be mad at you for hunting without me,” she teased. She stood up and stretched out her back before pausing before the meal. She bowed her head to him with gratefulness for the catch before starting on it. It was quiet for a moment, but it was almost just as comforting. There didn’t always need to be words between them.

“How'd you sleep?” she asked, motioning for him to join her. She wasn't sure if he'd already eaten. Though it wouldn't be able to fill them both up, it could at least take the edge off. "I am guessing the hunting was good as ever."

Smokey chuckled as he looked at her with a sly smile. "Ahhh, oops! You caught me red pawed!" he smirked, lifting one of his paws where a bit of crimson from the hare had trickled onto his paw. Pausing, he lapped it up quickly before taking place beside her again. "What ever could I do to make it up to you?" he chuckled again, resting upon his haunches as she took her fill of the hare, the silence almost as comforting as the words.

At her question he tiled his head with a soft smile. "As good as one possibly could sleep in this fine den." he alluded softly to her company having been most of the reason he slept well but he didn't want to outright say it. He couldn't risk scaring her off just yet. He wasn't sure what he'd do if she left him now. Things felt so normal, so right suddenly. The worries always crept up into the back of his mind, clawing at him. Would she leave tomorrow? Or the day after? Would her family come and run him off?

Shaking himself a moment, he peered back outside. "Not bad. Prey seems to be running good today. Of course, it would be better with a second set of paws." he glanced towards her and then down towards the rabbit. "I thought a morning snack would put you in the mood for a bigger hunt?" he asked hopeful, his tail wagging softly behind him.

Shadowstep tilted her head, causing one ear to flop over onto the other as she peered at his paw. She almost howled with laughter at how perfect his words had matched. “It’s almost like you planned this whole conversation! You’re way too deep in my head there, sir.” Even so, a huge grin was painted across her muzzle. His next words gave her pause, she tilted her head up and made a noise in her throat as though she were thinking about it. Without pulling her head down she turned her eyes to him, trying (unsuccessfully) to keep the smile away, “You’ll have to hunt with me every sunrise until we’re both dead, I guess. A pity!”

She could feel a chill run up her spine, causing reverberating tingles to run down her legs into her paws. Her mind was running wild with his meaning, but couldn’t be sure. Even though they connected so well, there was still something he was guarding. She tried to calm herself down not letting her thoughts run amuck with his words. It could mean anything. Instead she smirked and rolled her shoulder, “Lets keep an eye out for something that might help soften it some. That could help.” She hoped it was enough to let him know she meant to stay awhile if he was willing… without right out saying it. It could be a good way out too if he needed it.

His words had her on her paws and alert instantly. Her tail was wagging madly, “These paws are totally ready!” There wasn’t anything better than a good hunt with the male. To feel the breeze rushing through her fur as she ran, to see his silhouette passing the ground below them at the same speed, and when they’d actually make the kill... It was thrilling! It had always been fun with her family, but never so… fulfilling? She couldn’t put a paw on the words.

He always enjoyed her quips. Her small jokes and playful jests always seemed so instant and so clever he almost wondered if she had these all pre thought out before hand or if her wit was just that sharp. He leaned towards the latter. Not that he'd outwardly mention his other thought. He wanted her to stick around after all. "More comfortable, alright alright." he nodded and smiled. He had already been thinking of finding or saving a few pelts from their hunts to make this den a little more cozy. The only thing that had held him back was the uncertainty of how long their alliance would continue.

When she about sprung to her paws however he couldn't help but chuckle. "Easy there now, let's not scare away the prey before we even get a scent on them!" he grinned, getting to his own four feet with a bit of a spring in his step. The dark and smokey colored male gently bumped her with his shoulder as he passed, daring to bap the darkened tuft of his tail tip in her face. His ice blue eyes peered happily from behind his almost masked markings as he gazed into her golden and equally masked visage.

"I know a good place to start. As good of a snack as a hare is...mayhaps there will be a deer or two grazing we could single off." he smiled, leading her out of the den and a bit away into the forest. He paused only scent the area, seeing what might be lurking just beyond the borders of where he had temporarily set up home. A home he had one day hoped to fill with the sounds of family but when Fire Hawk vanished..... well. His hopes seemed to vanish along with her.

But now..... now those hopes.... well, they slightly sparked up again.
