Gehenna just wanted to go home. The night had already been a long one when he stumbled across the foolish page and the youma that almost ate him for a midnight snack and it felt that much longer now that he was dragging himself, battle worn and weary, back in the direction of his new house. There was a large gash from his cheekbone down to the collar of his tunic and all around it the skin was slick and shiny, blistered over and painful to the touch. Every time he smiled or sneered or moved, it felt taut like sunburn and tender besides. Home wasn't so far away that he couldn't make it but he had summoned his magic and it made him tired. It was frustrating because he was focused on the what if - what if there was another youma? what if something worse followed him and waited until he was alone? A dozen more questions popped into his battle worn thoughts and he sighed to himself, plodding slow and easy in the direction of his house and trying to put enough space between him and the battle zone that he could feel safe enough to power down and walk in his front door. It was dumb to focus on his thoughts so much when he was paranoid over being followed - his gaze tossed over his shoulder nervously and when he turned back to look ahead of him, she crossed into his path. The Mars Knight stopped short, frozen in place, as dark eyes picked out a person as familiar as she wasn't. Tanais. Something within him gave a painful, wicked lurch and for a real moment he considered just turning and walking back to whatever youma waited to turn him into toothpicks. He was rooted to the spot, though, and he knew she would see him before he could turn away. "Hey." In the end, he voted for simplicity.

"Ah... Hey."
Tanais had not thought that the signature she'd been following would turn out to be Ghen. She'd not thought it so hard that now that he was standing in front of her, she couldn't rub two thoughts together enough for more than a 'hey' back.
She'd gotten over the weirdness of patrolling without him. She'd stopped wondering if the thing she wanted to do was how he would have done it. She'd even stopped referencing the things he'd taught her about being a knight when she talked to people about how new she was, and how little she knew about what was going on. It had been months since she'd taken her meager possessions out of his place and into her own.
Months, and yet the moment she saw the source of the aura, recognized the dark hair and broad shoulders, she'd felt her stomach tighten up and her pulse race. She'd thought things had changed, that she'd changed, until that leap of excitement in her chest.
"I was just... you know." Tanais shrugged, struggling to come up with something. Anything. "Out on patrol. Felt someone strong and wanted to see if it was someone I didn't know yet."
She hadn't been looking for him, specifically, but now she kind of wondered if she'd stopped expecting these signatures to be him, or just gotten so used to the disappointment when they weren't that she didn't notice it any more.

Gehenna had always hated the phrase but as he stood there staring at her he couldn't think of anything other than how thick the tension was that swelled between them and how it felt like if he just reached out, he could cut it. It was uncomfortable but, somehow (in a way he definitely did not want to admit to himself), still comforting. Tension wasn't born from nothing, after all. "No, it's just me this time." He managed a weak smile that tugged at the uninjured side of his face and hoped she thought his reluctance was born from his battle wound instead of his hesitance. "Sorry to disappoint." Self deprecating jokes were an easy out when he didn't know what to say or do or how to behave. That seemed to be the case more often than not when it came to Tanais and the realization hit him like a train, so painful that he forgot about the throbbing, tender skin burning on the side of his face. It made him long for the easy days when they had been different people but it wasn't the first time - it wouldn't be the last time. Awkwardly, his eyes dropped and he made a show of staring at the back of his gauntlet. "I'm just heading home, myself. It's been a long night."

She frowned at him studying his hand, propping her own on her hips.
She didn't like the insinuation she didn't want to see him, even if the logic would have followed. She'd asked for space, but that invisible rope was still there, still strong and still tugging her closer. She wanted to move closer, and it took an effort keep her feet planted where they were, a safe volume of air between them.
"I'll walk you home." Tanais said firmly. Let him take that for disappointment. "You look like you could have used back up sooner tonight..."
The way the wound pulled at his mouth hadn't been lost on her, even if she'd forgotten about it under the tension between them. He'd been fighting, which wasn't such a surprise, but whatever had managed to mark him had to have been stronger than the usual run of things. She fell in beside him, keeping a careful space between them while trying to look like she wasn't. <********, but she wasn't even sure how much space they needed any more... how much he'd read into, and what conclusions he'd draw from something so simple, but esoteric.
"Did you kill whatever gave you that?" She offered as a distraction.
Youma maybe? But it could have been an officer. Had he been alone? She didn't know what answer she hoped for... and it was hard to resist dumping all of her questions on him like she had some right to know the answers to them. She didn't, but damn if she didn't feel like she did.

When Gehenna opened his mouth, he hadn't been sure whether he meant to tell her that he didn't need her or to thank her for the offer of keeping him company He was a man of instinct and he often spoke without thinking. Tonight, at least, his tongue worked to stop him and when his lips parted it felt like heavy, thick ash had replaced it. All he could do was cling desperately to his weak smile and nod his head in what he hoped seemed like an appreciative gesture. "Ah, yeah," he did smile then, weak and a little unpleasant as it pulled at the wound on his face. He stepped forward before he elaborated, though, so that he fell into an easy gait at her side. "I saved some green eared Page from a youma that was... well, not your run-of-the-mill beast anyway." With her at his side, it almost seemed like a different night altogether. The horrified, useless dude had been everything that Gehenna had never been, even in his most shameful moments. There had always been fight in him, at least when it meant saving others, and he remembered that then as he brought his eyes up and studied her profile. Every bit of her was Ariel, melted down and poured into a mold that was different. It made something in his gut twist and he looked away, like he always did, as he realized that once he would have dreamed of the chance to be her - with Ariel - like this. It ached and he was damnably tired of aching by now. "All he gave a s**t about was whether or not his armor would come alive and try to kill him, too." When he sighed, it wasn't just for the idiot page. It was for his own misfortunes and hers, for the duty that bound him, for the lot he had drawn in life. A little bit of it was definitely for the idiot, though. "I feel like someone's parent, saving these dumb kids and telling them how not to get themselves killed." The humor was lacking but it was an honest, defeated truth. The words died off and he let them hang between them instead of trying to fill the space with the sound of his own voice; it left only their boots, clunking against pavement in unison.

She quirked an eyebrow, her expression twisting as she scanned his face for a hint he was joking.
"His armor? The ********." The lofty dismissiveness smoothed conveniently over how, not so long ago, she hadn't even known her own civilian name, let alone how any of this knight stuff worked. "He's lucky he's still alive..."
It felt like Darwinism, but her skepticism eased quickly, setting thoughts to wondering why no one had picked the child up before now to show him the ropes. She'd had Ghen, and the power of a full knight, to keep her a** safe when she was starting out. Some pages likely didn't have that luxury... they weren't senshi with cats, after all.
"We probably need more people doing the parenting thing, so its not all on you all the time." Tanais said lightly. "I've haven't felt the call of that... Knight Night thing since way back. s**t doesn't exactly come with a manual. But at least you were there this time. He's still kicking, poor ********, and maybe you're going to get a cool scar out of the deal."
It was easier to talk than to walk beside him silently. She felt it the moment her words faded and it grew. It left too much space for thoughts about what he was thinking, what she should say to him, or how she was ever going to make this thing between them easier. She wanted it to be easier... but she wanted it on her own terms, and not from some wordless, aching need.
Small steps, maybe. She wasn't good at them, she'd freely admit that.
"I've found a couple of other Mars knights." Tanais offered finally, her tone lifting. He might appreciate knowing that, if he felt anything for the others of their planet that she did. And they still had a few blocks to the fixer upper he lived in. "Xibalba and Shiroyama. Cool people. Found Xib in a tree in the park like a loon, had Shiro swoop in to help me with a youma. Dumb, considering she's a page and the thing was giving me a good fight, but I'm thinking 'brave idiot' might be a Mars trait."
"I'd like you to meet them, sometime." She said quietly as she angled a look at the man by her side. "I feel like you might like them... and you know. It feels right. Having Mars knights together."
