HP: 20 DMG: N/A
Two rounds, two opponents well enough on his level, two victories Idrialite could feel fairly good about. That was new; Idrialite wasn’t used to doing well in his capacity as a Negaverse officer, at least not when it came to combat. Usually he was absolutely terrible at that part, and made up for it primarily by being very, very good at every other part of his job. At intelligence analysis and at assisting Quartz with whatever duties his General deemed necessary. It made him worth keeping around, combat capability or no.
As good as he’d felt going into the last two fights, that was no longer the case.
The randomized process of brackets and the vagaries of fate meant that he was staring down an opponent half his size, clearly much younger than him, and someone that he had very real concerns about doing serious damage to if he put anything close to a real effort into this fight. Oh, this was not going to be fun, no matter what happened. He glanced out into the stands, half hoping Quartz wasn't watching, half hoping he was. Being watched for this would feel absolutely terrible, whether he won or lost. If he won, he was beating up on a far weaker opponent. If he lost...beaten by a tiny slip of a thing. But if Quartz was there to witness, he at least would be able to make a report one way or the other to their superiors that was likely to be relatively favorable to Idrialite.
Hopefully his General wouldn't mind a bit of, in Idrialite's opinion, fairly natural hesitation. What other response could Idrialite have to being faced with a girl who was practically a child? She didn’t even look out of high school yet.
And wasn’t that the tragedy of the Negaverse. It wasn’t all men like him and Quartz, drafted against their will but still while old enough to understand. Faustite wasn’t the only teenager conscripted into this war, on either side. Order seemed largely made up of young people, eager to fight for what they believed was good. Even within the Negaverse, he often saw teenagers, and although his last two opponents had been more on his level, he supposed it was only inevitable that he would have to fight someone much younger.
Ufgh, this was terrible. There was no way for him to feel good about this. Forfeit also wasn’t an option, because he suspected that such an undignified exit would draw unnecessary attention from General Schörl. THat was the last thing he wanted. Best to find a way to win or lose gracefully, whichever way things went. If there was an opportunity to take her down without doing real harm, Idrialite would seize that. If, instead, the best he could do was throw the match as gracefully as possible, that would be the plan.
Either way, he had absolutely no intention of giving this fight his all. There was simply no way to do so without risking serious injury to his small, thoroughly fragile-looking opponent, and that was not the spirit of what was intended with these tournaments.xxxIvynian just a bit of narrative introduction, ha
