Careful pawsteps navigated the blight-riddled forest floor - clearly trying their best to not make a sound, but audibly failing every other step. Despite how often this occurred, the lanky black-and-white wolf winced each time and quickly scanned the area to ensure nothing was approaching. This place - the Redwoods - had been the setting of countless tales told to Ghostwise as a pup, and he assumed it was just that. A scary place in a scary story meant to keep him within the safety of the forest. Surely, he had reasoned, there couldn't be an entire forest of blight and death and horrible monsters. And yet, here he was: surrounded by the scent of rot and decay, picking his way around rotting carcasses and brambles. With a shudder, he paused and looked behind him. He'd been here before - accidentally, and not for long - but in that time he had gained a guide who promised to lead him through safely should he want to return. The black hare a few paces behind him met his gaze his gaze and nodded him ahead; Ghostwise responded with a nod back, a small huff, and carried on. If he didn't know better, he'd say there was a twinkle of amusement in the hare's eyes.
Black Stone had led him well so far, however - and the threat of being eaten was presumably enough to keep the hare from leading him astray. It was just the two of them out here, after all.

Where the unknown wolf unfortunate to be in the Redwoods at the same time as Kindle had been working painstakingly on foot steps that didn't make a sound, Kindle was quite the opposite. The Redwood should have terrified her. But the dead and decaying world around her only fascinated her. There were bound to be secrets hidden just over there! Or maybe over there?! Oh there were too many places and the tan colored wolf swore that every time she ventured back in the Redwoods, things changed.
As it was, the shewolf was racing about, quite loudly, through the crunchy dead ground, dodging around one dead tree and another. Flashes of orange and black feathers could be seen as a crow dipped lower and thin spiraled back up to navigate the terrain, cawing laughter echoing strangely.
Wind Dance spotted the other wolf first, but his silly partner was moving swiftly and he figured she'd see the wolf soon enough. Or maybe crash into them. Which only made the crow laugh again.
Kindle leapt over a fall log (really it was a tiny branch) and let out a startled yelp as all of a sudden there was another wolf in her pathway. She hit on the breaks and skidded to a halt, sliding on her rump a foot to appear not quite so gracefully in front of the stranger. Who would receive a toothy, tongue lolling out, grin.

It was likely for the best that Black Stone was behind Ghostwise, rather than leading the charge - he had paused briefly a few yards back, ears pricked and everything in his body telling him to run. There was another wolf in the area - though, he soon realized, it sounded like the other wolf was alone and moving too fast to be honed in on them exactly. He breathed a sigh of relief. Probably just a scout, or maybe some one who just had places to be - either way, his skittish "captor" had only asked him for directions, not updates on their surroundings. He'd figure it out soon enough.
Black Stone didn't need sensitive hare ears to sense the wolf coming before Ghostwise did, though - most creatures would realize something was barreling towards them before that very thing skidded to a halt in front of them. He let out an incredibly undignified yelp of surprise and jumped back as she slid forward.
"WHO - HELLO!?" He yapped, eyeing her nervously, "What are you doing here!?"
Black Stone hopped forward, stifling a grin and hanging back.

Perhaps, later on in her life, when she actually matured a little more (in theory), Kindle wouldn't have had the gull to laugh at the other wolf. But, she was still a young adult with a puppy heart and the surprise that she instilled in the other wolf was quite hilarious. She laughed cheerfully and wagged her tail, blue eyes bright as she regarded the stranger.
"Oh I'm so sorry! I just got so excited to see someone else out here that I guess I got carried away... " She managed to get her mirth under control. However, her energy was endless.
"Hello! How are you? Have you been exploring the Redwoods long? Did you find anything exciting?! I love looking around here! So many secrets for such a dead wasteland. I do keep hoping that the Redwoods will share some of those secrets with me one day." As she took a breath, Wind Dancer lazily soared down to land on her back, eyeing the wolf and the hare.
While Kindle was definitely a shock to the system, Wind Dancer was a bit more relaxed. "I do apologize. We're still working on how to not get so excited." Probably something the crow would never get Kindle to master.
The shewolf just rolled her eyes and looked at her new friend. He was totally deemed 'New Friend' status just for not trying to snap his teeth her way. "What am I doing here? What are you doing here? I'm always here. Well, okay not always, but I do venture out here whenever I can. My alpha tries to convince me to give the Redwoods a break." Kindle just needed to bring Two Tone out here to explore and he'd understand.
"Buuuut, to answer your question, I was looking to see if I could find any more crows, like Wind Dancer."
Said crow just sighed and regarded the other two with sympathy.

Ghostwise's face was some terrible contortion between 'annoyance' and 'pouting' - his reaction was totally reasonable, there was no reason to laugh at his... Defensive shout. Yeah. That's what that was - would've scared off a monster no problem. This wolf was just lucky he hadn't taken up the offense, then she'd be in trouble. He shot a quick glare at Black Stone, who was suddenly enraptured by a particular cloud and couldn't seem to match the black and white wolf's gaze right that second.
For as much as he'd tried to hide it, his face lit up as the other wolf carried on about secrets and exploration. "Wait, wait - you're here to learn about the Redwoods too? I thought I was the only one!" He sat down, settling himself in for the long haul. He wanted to know everything.
"You're always here? Are you sick? Wh--" He paused for a second, realizing how that came out the second it left his mouth, "I mean - not like that, I don't think you're crazy - but have you been infected by whatever this is? The blight? You look totally fine - you have an alpha? Does your pack... No, they probably don't live around here, right? That's probably not healthy. Unless you're fine?"
Now it was his turn to take a breath. Black Stone mouthed a "sorry" and shot a pitying look to the raven, who he assumed held a similar caretaker role to their overexcited wolf.
"I haven't found anything, not yet - I just got here, this hare is guiding me through so we don't get attacked by mo--" Ghostwise cut himself off again and looked around nervously. "Wait. Are there monsters in these woods? That's what my pack always told me, but they also said I'd die if I ever walked in here, so. If there are, we should... Move somewhere safer."

By the moon, it was a wolf after her own heart! A kindred spirit. A fellow junkie of the Redwoods. Kindle just lit right up like the sun shining through the clouds, not able to sit still as her butt wiggled and tail wagged so furiously. "You mean you explore the Redwoods too?!" Oh just wait until she told her pack about this!
Her? Crazy? Kindle started to laugh again at the other wolf, not at all bothered by his questions or assumption. Really, she was too focused on the fact that here, before her, sat another wolf that actually enjoyed being out in the Redwoods like herself. Somehow, she did manage to quit wiggling enough to sit down, Wind Dancer hopping down to stand on a rock.
"Me? Sick? I don't think I am." A pause. "Nope. Not sick. I've never felt sick. But I've heard tales of a sickness somewhere. I've never run into anyone with it. Even Wind Dancer, my friend here, wasn't sick when I found him..... Oooh yes, yes! I have an alpha! And a pack! Goodness no, silly, they don't live around here. Now that would be crazy. No no, I come here to explore all by myself while out scouting for my pack." She took a moment to fill her lungs back up with much needed air. For round two.
"Wait, you don't have a pack out here do you? Because, I totally didn't mean you are crazy. Just that having one here would be crazy. Though I can't even think of all the things they would have been able to discover if they actually lived here! Oh and I'm fine. Never felt better. And never felt odd after visiting."
Wind Dancer caught sight of the hare, and sighed himself, dipping his beak in acknowledgement. He hop-flapped over closer to the hare, giving him a small bow. "Redwoods addict?" He guessed, turning to watch the two wolves. Oh yes, they were going to be here a while.
Monsters?! Kindle blinked big blue eyes at the other wolf. "There are monsters in here?" Well she had never seen any. Not that she could think of anyway. "I've never seen one. There have been strange noises I've heard before and tried to follow only to discover... nothing. And weird scents. But I've never ever seen monsters... " Suddenly the shewolf gasped. "What if they've been watching me this whole time?! Could they have been the ones that sent Wind Dancer to me?"
The raven just sighed heavily. Again.

Any of Ghostwise's attempts to keep his tail from wagging furiously only made him look that much more excited - his whole body was practically wiggling with joy. He hung on every one of Kindle's words, furiously scribbling mental notes - this was all so much! Not only had he found a fellow explorer and intellectual, but she was just as enthusiastic as he was! Finally!
"I've heard of the sickness, too. My pack - my old one, I don't have a pack now, they all... left after the seer's vision came true - which, speaking of, do you know anything about seers? They all said they were shams but then that happened and wait." He paused for a moment, furrowing his brows and staring into the distance intently before snapping back a second later. "Sorry, too many things in my head at once. Sickness. Right."
He took a deep breath, trying to settle himself down. Creeping through the woods had built up a horrible tension in him, but the relief of finding a another wolf - maybe even a friend? - left him rambling that anxiety away. "We lived in the forests south of here. One our hunters got sick after coming here, but he came here all the time. So I don't think it was the Redwoods, but..." He looked around nervously.
"Does your pack want to learn more about the woods?" He focused back in on Kindle and tilted his head curiously, "I've been looking for other wolves like us - ones that want to learn. I think there's more here to learn than one wolf could find alone, you know?"
Black Stone grinned as the raven approached, dipping his head in greeting. "Oh, absolutely. He's been skulking along the border for days now, too scared to go in on his own. Yours?"
Ghostwise gasped at her gasp. "Someone sent you your bird!? My hare came from these forests too! What if he's been sent by them?" He hopped up to his feet, glancing around as he mumbled to himself, "I mean, that's not very monster-y... Sending us food.... Maybe they hold the sickness in their meat? Maybe it's a test!?"
Kyrieko I don't think I'd ever get tired of these two interacting :'D

Kindle had upgraded to bouncing a little from foot to foot as she picked up more on Ghostwise's excitement in addition to her own. It was just so very nice to have someone that she could talk to about the redwood and have them talk back instead of just listen.
Blinking rapidly to focus back on Ghostwise, she caught one of his stray thoughts and frowned, head tilted in her own thoughts. Pack? Seers? No pack? How sad. Did he want to find a pack? Was that what led him to this desolate place to begin with? Wait. Seers. "I don't really know much about seers. I've never met one. I've heard of them, oh yes. And I want to believe that the stories are true? My pack doesn't have one. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad omen. Are packs supposed to have seers?" The female paused, trying to get her thoughts back on track.
What were they discussing this second again?
Sickness. Pack. No pack. Something in there.... then Kindle laughed. "Oh no, my pack is not all that curious about the dead woods. I think they just humor me and let me talk their ears off to be kind. My alpha has a little interest if I can find more ravens like Wind Dancer." But nothing in regards to the secrets to be discovered.
"You are the first one - wolves like us, I mean, that I have met! That's so sad about your pack. Are you looking for a pack? Aren't you lonely? I can be you friend!" The last was bubbled out in a loud tone as the shewolf renewed her tail wagging. "Oh yes! Let's be friends! We need someone to talk to. And compare notes with. And... and oh my yes. There is so much here to learn but not enough of us."
Wind Dancer chuckled and then sighed heavily. "Ah, kindred spirits they are. And mine?" He gave the hare one of The Looks. "She goes in there waaaay too much."
If it was possible, Kindle's eyes got even wider. "Oh my Moon, really?!" She sucked in a breath, looking all around them before shuffling closer to tell Ghostwise with his sudden epiphany. "What if it really is a test? Do you think we passed?! Is that why we can explore here and not see them!" Maybe that was why she'd never seen the monsters!
Wind Dancer just groaned. He was pretty sure they would be spending the night here. Ars Naberius I love them, they are hilarious! Maybe they will one day actually discover something. xD

Ghostwise tilted his head in thought. He hadn't really considered that a pack would need or even want a seer. Huh. "Are they? My pack never had one, and I've only seen one once, when I was a pup. They were alone, I think. Wandered into our territory to warn us about some great danger to the pack, but then it came true," He paused for a moment, savoring the dramatic effect, "Moons and moons and moons later, though. And it was just politics, in the end. No one got... Hurt, or anything." He frowned a bit in thought. While it'd been seasons since his pack's fracturing, he'd maintained his packmate's gnawing worry that it wasn't the pack that would be destroyed, but every member in it. There wasn't necessarily a reason to believe this, but...
His frown deepened at the news that the pack wasn't that interested in the woods - an entire pack of wolves like the one before him would be the best - but his face immediately lit up as she continued. "Yes!" He barked, jumping to his feet in excitement, "We'll be friends - two fellow scholars, here to explore the woods and its secrets"
"As for a pack though... Maybe," he hummed thoughtfully, "Do you think we could convert them? Or that they'd let us do more research here? What're they like? Would I still be able to see you?"
"Pretty sure this is mine's first time," Black Stone chuckled, watching the two, "Ceeeertaintly won't be the last, though."
Ghostwise gasped dramatically, all restraint thrown to the wind long ago. "I - I think so - it'd make sense, right? You're here all the time and you're fine! And I didn't come in here without Black Stone - he's a guide! A test, and we're passing!"
Black Stone groaned along with Wind Dancer, rolling his eyes. He'd take it if it meant he wouldn't be eaten, but jeez. Of all the wolves to get stuck with.
Kyrieko petition for two tone to create the x files but for the redwoods.I believe in them! XD If/when there's ever a chance for them to explore the crystal caves they totally should!

There was evident surprise in the fiery wolf's features at such news. She had only ever heard rumors about seers. And had never even seen one herself. But the tales she heard had to come from somewhere, right? Now she had a friend telling her that not only had he seen one, but their words had come true?! Kindle's already over taxed brain all but exploded.
"It came true?!" She gasped, all but missing the little tidbit about it happening a moons later. BUT STILL. It. Happened.
Kindle just snickered at mention of her pack. She loved them! But she knew they didn't feel the same enthusiasm she did when exploring these woods. "If I haven't manged to do so by now, probably not." She laughed, tail wagging. And then was nodding her head vigorously. "Oh yes! They are a wonderful pack. And they would never keep me from coming to see you! They lovingly let me do what I please in the Redwood so long as I accomplish my duty within the pack. My alpha is so nice. He lets me go wander as a please. I don't like staying in one place for too terribly long. Except here. But everything seems to change all the time." The last was said a little ominously.
Meanwhile, the more sane creatures, suffered their silly wolves together. Wind Dancer chuckled and then gave Black Stone a sympathetic look. "I am so sorry yours had to meet mine, then. But at least we won't suffer alone?" He offered in good humor.
"It makes perfect sense!" Kindle heartily agreed, glancing at their familiars and back to Ghostwise. "Do you think the further they lead us, the more successful we are at our test?!" Maybe that was how one discovered the real secrets hidden in the land of dead trees! Ars Naberius Bahahahahaha |D And yesss! That should be their next destination to explore!

"It came true!" Ghostwise yapped excitedly, his worries pushed aside in favor of the joy of his story going over well. If he was going to be haunted by his potential inevitable doom, he may as well get some enjoyment out of it in the meantime.
"Well!" he harrumphed, "They don't know what they're missing out on. At least they have you - someone needs to keep them updated on the goings-on around here!" He paused for a moment, looking out over the forest again. Especially if things are always changing, he thought with a shiver. Were it not for the company of his new friend and his little guide, he would've bolted long ago. Things here just felt weird. When his gaze settled back on his new friend, he blinked in realization. "I, uh. Just realized I never got your name. I'm Ghostwise!"
"Yes!" Black Stone laughed, "Thank you for keeping me company. It's nice to have someone sane to talk to." He shot Wind Dancer a sympathetic look back. He hoped these two would stick around each other for a while - though he was no longer Ghostwise's potential meal, he didn't have high hopes for other wolves. Rather, Ghostwise's ability to protect him from other wolves. But the crow was kind and his wolf kept Black Stone's own wolf occupied. It was a good setup.
"It has to be!" Ghostwise exclaimed, eyes alight with excitement, "Your crow must be a guide too! They're a ward against monsters and the key to secrets." The puffed out his chest triumphantly. Give these two a prize, they totally just solved this spooky mystery.

For that briefest of moments (more like seconds), Kindle's mind seemed to just stop at such important information to process. Perhaps she needed to try and find their pack a seer? Was it even possible to find a seer or did they just show up? And what if they made a prediction such as the one her friend's pack underwent?
Shaking her head, Kindle focused back on the other wolf. And then snorted in amusement. "They just have a lot of other stuff to focus on. That's why they have me to handle the important stuff here in the redwoods!" He was probably more accurate in his comment, but Kindle did love her pack and family. Even if they didn't fully understand the things one could find out about this strange wood. "I think they just figure I'll tell them the important bits when the time is right."
Which was every time she returned from scouting. And yes, she really did scout for her alpha.
She just spent a little more time scouting this area.
"OH! Oh I'm sorry! I just got so excited. I'm Kindle. Pleasure to meet you, Ghostwise." She wagged her tail.
Wind Dancer clicked his beak and bowed his head. "Ah, yes. It is very nice indeed. Not that Kindle is bad to talk with. Just.... energetic." He mused with a twinkle in his eye. Although it seemed like Black Stone had his own paws full with his Ghostwise, was it?
Kindle just nodded her head in full hearted agreement. Yes! Yes that had to be the reason whey they both had been gifted companions from these woods. And why they hadn't run in to any monsters. Or anything dangerous for that matter. "I wonder if we're supposed to travel deeper into the woods, then?" She pondered allowed, looking out into the deeper woods. "I've never really gone too far. All the my experiences have been about this far in? Or maybe a little more once or twice."
The fiery wolf suddenly had an idea. Because of course now she and her friend needed to explore further in the woods. "We should totally go explore more! Like, venture deeper and see if we're right? Oh but I've been away from my pack for a while. Two Tone would probably be so worried if I take too much longer. But maybe we could meet here again? Or just a quick peek? What do you think? Do you live near here, Ghostwise? Maybe I can come visit you once I report in!" Ars Naberius They definitely need to go explore them caves!

Ghostwise felt a flicker in his chest - of what, he wasn't quite sure. But he did know that Kindle was pretty much the coolest wolf he'd ever met. Scouting the Redwoods on her own, befriending one of its denizens, and knowing so much about everything? Collaborating with him on a new, totally true theory? So cool. And brave. And really nice to talk to. And -
He laughed, attention snapping back to the conversation at hand as she wagged her tail. "No, no! I... Was totally too excited too. Kindle!" He beamed, tail wagging, "A pleasure to meet you!"
"Of course!" Black Stone hummed in agreement, flicking an ear, "I'm sure Ghostwise - my wolf - has his... More relaxed times. Just not while we're in here, it seems." He glanced over Wind Dancer, taking a moment to admire his plumage. "It must be nice, flying," He mumbled, almost to himself.
Ghostwise's eyes widened. Further? He'd just barely managed to get himself into the edges of the forest without turning tail and running. But if their theory was correct, they'd been chosen to do this. They had to. Not to mention all the information they'd surely learn! He coughed, trying to hide his (likely very obvious) mix of fear and excitement at the idea. "Yes! Absolutely!" He beamed, tail wagging harder, "Let's meet again! I've been staying at the edge of the Redwoods, near the river - there's a big fallen tree, you can't miss it." If it weren't for her bird and experience, he might worry he'd be too hard to find - it was a big world, after all. But he trusted her.

Oh good, he'd been just as excited as she had! Of course, she hoped that Wind Dancer didn't tattle that she was notorious for forgetting to introduce herself to others when there was just so much more exciting things to discuss then silly names!
Although she didn't think Ghostwise's name was silly. She rather liked it. Very fitting for a friend that enjoyed exploring mysterious things just like herself!
"Well, now we are officially friends! Cause we got serious and shared our names." Kindle laughed, giving her fiery coat a good shake and stretching her legs. She was going to have to head back to her pack soon. This made her sad, but now she had something super exciting to look forward to!
Wind Dancer nodded solemnly, a twinkle in his eye. "It's a curse! This foresaken place is cursed and they have been trapped by it. Or us by finding these two wolves." But there was nothing but fondness for Kindle in the raven's eyes. And then he laughed, glancing at the hare. Whether or not he was supposed to hear his mumbled words, he had. "Ah, flying. It is like a piece of art that you constantly perform and it changes with every beat of ones wings." He paused, then gave the hare a devilish look. "I could always take you for a spin though the trees~"
Kindle's blue eyes kept gazing out into the abyss of the redwood, where she had yet to travel. But the desire to see more of this strange place was strong. And then Ghostwise beamed at her and agreed and she couldn't contain her happy little yip. "I very much want to meet again! And explore this place with you. My pack is closer to the mountains in the east, but I will find you again!" After all, she was a scout for her pack. Finding a friend shouldn't be too difficult!
"Until we meet again, Ghostwise!" And then she gave him a little brush of of her muzzle in goodbye before gracefully taking off towards her home. Ars Naberius An end for you~ And yes she stole a nuzzle muahaha! |D
