Wrathful Demigod

Porsha hadn't left. She'd stayed out in the living room with the tv volume turned low in case Saorise needed her for some reason and spent the time the young woman soaked to catch up on an episode or two of one of the shows she'd been binge watching in very small doses. It was early yet, earlier than she was used to being back in her apartment, but she had no intention of leaving the poor girl on her own, not after the state she'd found her in. Tonight her place was here.

So she'd changed from one set of shorts to a much more comfortable pair and removed the bra from beneath her t-shirt. A second shirt and pair of shorts was dug from the depths of her drawers for Saorise and had been set on the edge of the sink in the bathroom.

Now she was just waiting, her body stretched out across the futon couch and Lenore loafed contently on her torso. She had one hand on the cat's back, and the other was hanging of the edge of the couch with a stemless glass of wine held between her fingers.

At some point she knew Slate would return home, but when probably depended on if he was working on his energy quota or compiling information to hand over to Schorl. The later, she thought, knowing how desperate he was to find answers about his brother. She wanted that too, had given him leniency on the energy he was supposed to be bringing in so he could focus on finding Umber. But she did hope he made it home before she or Saorise went to bed. It'd be easier to introduce the two of them before he walked in to find a stranger sleeping in his home.

The truth was that Slate did none of the things Porsha had expected just then. He'd tried draining, found himself distracted, and quit it for something else. That something else was piecing together what else might've happened to Umber, or some other information he could think of that would be useful to General Mean Green, but he couldn't concentrate on that either. Most things he tried ran into the same problem — he couldn't keep his mind off of Umber, but he couldn't do anything about it either.

And he wasn't sure when he started thinking of Shale as nothing but Umber, and that troubled him too. The Negaverse really took over their lives. He was pretty sure the Negaverse took his brother's life, too — either by serving it and getting killed by a senshi or something else. It wasn't like his brother to just get mauled by a bear and left as lunch for the vultures, or to return home and give up the whole Negaverse gig for as much as he was into it, and all these impotent what-ifs and lukewarm answers kept circling around in his brain until he was sufficiently sick of it all. For just a minute, he wanted to not think of his brother. He wanted his life back from all these questions and worries.

So he visited his workplace again. Friedman's Cafe was, at least, a sufficiently laid-back establishment where his shifts weren't too demanding and they weren't too keen on placing a lot of responsibility on their baristas. They expected him to show up for the job, do the job, and stop thinking about the job once he left. And that day, when he walked in, he found the place short-shifted. Then he realized he had a voicemail on his phone from three hours ago, asking for help.

So he donned a smock and helped. And once they were sufficiently caught up, the line diminished and fresh cream made and trash taken out and espresso prepared and change stocked, and Slate's mind relaxed a little with that reprieve, he took off that smock and headed home.

Home, he would discover, to Porsha and someone else. But he didn't register that last part when he walked in the door, nor when he set his keys on the counter and beelined to the couch where Porsha lay, nor when he reached out to pet their DisasterCat. "Hey," he offered Porsha a warm smile and a kiss. "Lenore looks happy." But, Porsha would know, Lenore always looks happy.

It was only when a splash perked the cat's ears that Slate looked after it, then looked at Porsha quizzically. Hope rose in his chest, so desperate and energetic. "Is that who I think it is?"

Water was blessed. The sound and feel of it washed out more than dirt and grim- there was no sound, no world, for minutes and minutes. Time pooled around her feet and smelled like strange, pleasant soaps. Light was dim through plastic and curtained barriers.
Coming out to the world again had remained quiet save a muffled drone of television. Porsha is still here. It's safe. Nothing and no one can do anything here while she's here. Oh! a shirt and shorts! Oh thank goodness. My clothes...they'll need to go in the laundry. Powering down didn't help them.

Saorise came out from the hall, holding up shorts that were made for hips with flesh and muscle on them, and started to see there was another person there. Porsha wasn't leaping to attack him, and he had keys he was setting down. He must belong here, too.

"I'm sorry to invade,... I'm Saorise. "

He looked so....something. Like looking forward for something or someone. It couldn't possibly be for her. Was more company coming by? That would be strange, but surely Porsha would explain.
