MISSION 006 - THE ROSE GARDEN
A jolly little tune because I can

Location:The most picturesque wing of the Witzend Grand Arboretum, the Carroll Memorial Rose Gardens are world-renowned for their antiquated elegance and charm. In preparation for the Arboretum’s annual Rose Bloom Festival in June, a team of officers had been testing an energy draining operation with tiny youma in the turnstiles, siphoning tiny orbs from each guest. However, the latest reports indicate that the youma are going missing just as fast as they’re being installed, and the local agents are scratching their heads. Could this be the result of senshi activity in the area? The local branch has asked for volunteer officers to take part in an overnight watch of the area, just in case.

Requirements: 2 - 4 Agents, Must Be Powered, No Stage Limitations

Debriefing: The Arboretum is privately owned and operated, one of a few landmarks that exist outside of Negaverse control. Agents taking part in this mission must do so with utmost discretion and stealth--the Witzend Branch would prefer not to deal with hushing a PR scandal about mysterious officers sneaking around at night.

♠️STEP ONE:

The ticket booths have closed, the last of the groundskeepers have left. With no one else in the arboretum, the gardens are hushed into the whispers of insects and bats in the evening air. Some find it comforting; others unnerving.

All players must roll 1d6 to investigate the area:

    Quote:
1 - Did you know that the arboretum houses over 100 breeds of rose, in every color of the rainbow? You discover that reading one of the garden placards, but don’t see any sign of senshi. Focus! (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
2 - Stop and smell the roses! As you walk through the garden you find yourself distracted by the array of rose. The area you find yourself in is filled with white roses. They stretch as far as you can see. There is one rose that looks out of place. It's a dark red, almost like--- When you touch it, you discover that the coloring comes off. Has someone been trying to paint these white roses red? You're too distracted, but you make note of the oddity anyway. (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
3 - You come across a pocket of roses that are surrounded by teal colored butterflies. If you stare long enough, you start to notice that they're forming their own rose pattern on top of the roses. It's peculiar, so you use your tablet to take a picture. For some reason the flash goes off and you've found yourself attracting the attention of one of the security guards. (Do not roll in step two, you must respond to #2.)
4 - There's a frog on one of the fountains you pass. It croaks loud enough to get your attention and you take a moment to observe it. Several minutes pass before it hops away, to your dismay what felt like a handful of minutes has actually been almost fifteen! You need to get it together before someone notices you! (-3 from your next roll)
5 - It looks like some of the turnstiles have soot on them, almost like scorch marks. That alone wouldn’t be cause for concern, but when you step back, it looks like the soot was imprinted in a series of heart patterns. A Captain or higher will be able to recognize these marks as the residue of senshi magic.
6 - Most of the arboretum is considered too ‘historic’ to install security cameras. However, you notice there’s a camera inside the gift shop that just happens to be facing the turnstiles from inside. A quick review of the footage shows blurry figures arrive at the gates two nights ago, followed by a blinding flash of light. Classic senshi activity. (Add +2 to your next roll)

♠️STEP TWO:

    Each player must roll 1d6:

    Quote:
1 - You find nothing but the sounds of crickets, the running water of the fountains. The wait is starting to test your patience.
2 - You round a corner and are caught by a flash of light. Someone gasps, then shouts, “Oi! Who’s there?” You’ve been found by a security guard roaming the grounds--do you neutralize the witness or attempt to negotiate (Quote Nuxaz)?
3 - Something rustles in the bushes--and a rabbit hops out, sniffing the air before it retreats into the night. It’ll take a few moments for your heart rate to settle, but otherwise you’re okay.
4 - There appears to be a trail of footprints pressed into the grass of the gardens that seem fresh. One of them looks a little singed, something akin to a burned heart damaging the grass. The footprints are too dainty to be the security guard you've seen around. You follow them.
5 - You're distracted by a particularly beautifully blooming rose. When you reach out to touch it, you p***k a finger on a thorn you were too careless to notice. It stings and you feel a little woozy. (Subtract 3 from any combat rolls.)
6 - You hear footsteps and duck into the shadows--it sounds like there are young voices across the garden, and they’re having the most interesting conversation…(Quote Nuxaz for a snippet)

You must resolve the first Stage Two encounter before proceeding to the next player’s, until all players have rolled. Then you may regroup and move to Stage Three (Quote Nuxaz).

♠️STEP THREE:

You feel it, the faintest flicker at the edge of your senses, and then a glimmer--there’s an Order aura nearby.

One player must R1d4. Modify your roll by the following:

    Quote:
If a third-stage or higher character is present as part of your party, subtract one (does not stack).
If a guardian cat is present as part of your party, add one (does not stack).
If a character neutralized the security guard, subtract one.
If a character correctly identified evidence of a senshi presence (5/6 in stage one, 4 in stage 2), add one. (This effect stacks--so two pieces of evidence means +2)

    Final Results:
    Quote:
1 - Maybe it was a powerful aura tipping them off, or a body left strewn and unattended, but the senshi team have been alerted to your presence and have come prepared. You all feel a flash of light and a burning sensation on your clothes and skin as you’re caught in the ambush of a senshi attack, leaving behind little hearts singed all over your bodies. (Quote Nuxaz to engage! Everyone loses 5 HP to start).
2 - The auras linger for a moment, and then fade into the night. No one takes the bait tonight, and you go home empty-handed. (This mission has failed--file a report, this mission may be repeated another night)
3 - You wait in silence, and eventually you’re rewarded--a team of sailor scouts approach the turnstiles, cautious and ready for a fight. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!)
4 - From the depths of the garden comes a lone figure, a sailor scout cut off from the rest of their group. It looks like they’ve chosen to divide and conquer this evening, which leaves them...vulnerable. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!).

    ooc

  • At the conclusion of the mission, please have 1 character fill out a mission report. You may simply fill out the form in the mission hub or write a solo/reg for it.
  • If you have captured your target you have unlocked a special mission! Please quote Nuxaz to trigger it!
  • Successfully completing this mission gives you a Painted Rose (One Time Usage: May be consumed to allow +/-1 to a social encounter dice result. Effects do not stack and cannot be combined with other times.) **MAY ONLY BE OBTAINED ONCE** You cannot claim this time if the mission report has not been filled out and submitted!
  • If your health drops to 0 HP, quote Nuxaz for a special mission!

It wasn't her first venture into the Gardens at night. As per her report, Tantalite had allowed the area to sit for some time - an illusion of safety, perhaps for those who may have been made wary upon her and Carnelian's last visit.

Though for reasons she had kept quite personal, she'd chosen to not bring her first choice with her. They'd been perhaps too relaxed with each other, and it would be better this time to stay on her toes. It was just as unnerving at night as it had been before, even with how familiar it was.

"There are patrolling guards," Tantalite warned, making a point to not clarify what should have been taken from such a statement as she carefully settled in, giving her two companions a long look - perhaps to let them go first.

It wasn't Theodore's first venture into the Gardens either.

His last attempt had resulted in an ugly failure and the lack of one of the people he had called upon reporting. At least this time everyone seemed to show up.

Pink eyes blinked at the captain, the snooty cat lifted his chin when he looked from her to the senshi he was responsible for. "I know," he huffed, tail flicking behind him exaggeratedly.

"C'mon let's get this taken care of quickly and discreetly." His brows furrowed with concentration before he went sniffing around, coming upon the turnstiles and noting that once again, they had soot on them.

Definitely senshi magic. Now where were the senshi?

His first mission this trip, and in a place that was actually… pleasant. A stark contrast to his usual powered work.

The smell of roses was heavy, the air perfumed by the hundreds of blossoms and countless varieties. Even in the dark, he could see the shapes of bushes and manicured paths. He nodded when the woman with him spoke, his mouth twisting. Guards meant their job was harder, especially if they couldn’t be just removed or incapacitated. They weren’t supposed to cause a debacle here that needed covering up, and he was loathe to do something that was going to get Labyrinthite to come down on his head.

Slipping forward, he followed Dia’s cat as he padded towards the turnstiles and wished he had it as easy as the cat did for staying out of sight… He was a lot bigger with a lot more dragging fabric and hair to deal with… even the captain had it easier than he did.

A sign card they passed was just visible in the low the light, the black lettering enough to make out if he leaned close and squinted. It was pretty typical… talking about the roses on exhibit like any sign card at a zoo or museum. Reading it distracted him before he came to himself with a start, pulling his mind back to the matter at hand. He was not going to find anything letting himself get pulled in reading things like a tourist.

Tantalite shot Theodore a sharp look, but said nothing towards the Mauvian. Instead, she turned a critical eye onto Fafnir for a silent moment before taking up the rear of the group. Perhaps it was caution.

There was little use in covering ground she'd seen before - not when the others were looking it over. Cautiously checking for any guards, she stepped off to one of the sides, following the path of roses almost idly. For a moment, it was all fun and games and Tantalite had to snap herself back to attention.

This isn't the time for that! she reminded herself, glancing over the display of white roses one last time, until......

Reaching out, she brushed her fingers over one of the roses - a red amongst all the whites - noting the pigment on her fingers upon doing so with a small frown. Someone....was coloring the roses? They'd missed quite a few.

He had left the turnstiles, his nose and tail twitching with a mix of concern and impatience. He put his face to the ground, trying to pick up any sort of scent but all he could smell was the aroma of roses.

He found a place to hide beneath when he pulled out his tablet, pressing the button for it to open so he could check in on the others.

The sound of crickets were starting to irritate him.

"Have either of you found anything?"

With Theodore at the turnstyles and the other woman sneaking down another path, Fafnir took the one his feet were on, a sense of tension settling down on him as he went.

The arboritum was dark, and heavy with the smell of flowers. No breeze moved the plants around him, and the further he got from the entrance, the quieter it seemed to get. It almost grated on his nerves, needing to be so focused. Watch for the guards, feel for an enemy, don't trip over a god damn rake... Things felt easier back in DC. Here there was so much unknown.

The dark plants next to the path rustled and Fafnir nearly felt his spirit leave his body as alarm bells rang in his head. Monster!

Which was dumb child instinct, but considering he knew monsters were actually real, it was maybe not so far off the mark.

Something small jumped out of the bushes and paused there, long ears perked forward. A rabbit, of all things, regarding him warily before it turn and disappeared again. He could feel his heart racing, pounding in his ears, and a gusty breath left him as he pressed a hand to the crack in his chest.

He swore softly under his breath, at himself and the rabbit, as he heard his tablet go off and pulled out the pen, opening it up. Theodore...

"I haven't found anything. Just a rabbit." He said, trying to keep the growl out of his voice.

For all of the oddity with the roses, Tantalite's lingering revealed nothing more in that immediate area (though it was hard to tell if she was actually looking for anything in particular).

When Theodore spoke up, she frowned, checking one more time for any guards, before shaking her head as she moved to join him and Fafnir once again. "Nothing. It's very quiet," if the sounds of silence could really be counted as such. But they were normal things.

They'd come for unnatural things.

"I don't like it."

Just a rabbit. Fafnir said.

Nothing, Tantalite had sighed.

Theodore's ears twitched, nose lifting when his pink eyes went wide. He felt them like a shiver running down his spine and he spotted them shortly after. Hurriedly he tried to reach the others.

"There are senshi, by the fountain, some now!" He cried, watching with both excitement and panic.

He had his cat beam, surely they could stun one of them and if they brought them in...

He had no authority, but it didn't stop him from pretending. "Engage! Take them alive!"

They hadn't noticed what the gathered were right away. It was impossible to tell as they couldn't sense the auras because of the mauvian among negaverse midst.

"There's movement," the super had said to Kevin, turning towards it and attempting proceed with caution. "We just passed the guards--"

Whatever they wanted to say was lost as blue eyes widened and the senshi reached for Kevin's arm. "Those are negaverse agents, how did they--?" Then, they saw the cat.

Oh.

Oh.

"Well, better get ready for a fight...."

Super Sailor Kevin
HP: 30 HP
DMG:7-6= 1 at the cat

The sound of the fountain was relaxing, or it would have been if it wasn't the middle of the night and they weren't currently on a mission. Kevin silently wished they had more of a group with them but she knew that too many people would attract just as much attention as having too few would with danger. But she was overruled so it was her and another Super. She was going to have to make sure that they both got out of this mission in one piece.

The female senshi, in a rather masculine fuku, tensed at her companion's announcement. They had company... of the chaos verity. "Bloody furball," Kevin palmed one of the decorative stones and whipped it at the feline. It wouldn't do much but it was a visible representation of the irritation she felt at the surprise arrival of their enemies.

((FYI Kevin looks like a guy, tends to act like one too ^.^ here is her disposable log where I did a doll creation image for her))

Corrupt Fafnir (2d6 - 4)
HP: 20
DMG: 5-4 = 1 for Kevin

What a waste of time… They hadn’t found anything useful so far, though Fafnir was willing to bet the missing youma were senshi work. Not exactly rocket science, that. At least he wasn’t the only one turning up nothing, since Tantalite regrouped with them empty handed as well.

Quiet, thoughtful, he rolled his shoulders at her, frowning.

“I don’t either, but there’s nothing here.” He said softly, turning at the small scurrying noise of Theodore bolting back to join them.

Fafnir’s horned head jerked up and then he could feel them… the signature of two senshi, closing in quickly. He cursed as he darted a glance looking for cover, side stepping to at least put some bushes between him and the enemy. A rock came whizzing by, aimed for Theodore, and a scowl clouded the sensei’s face at the cowardice of it.

Theodore was smaller than a football. What damage did they think he could do?

Snatching up his own rock from the pathway, he sent it flying back at the one who’d thrown the first. Not the best of attacks, really, and he felt faintly stupid as soon as he did it.

Attacking ???
Captain Tantalite
(2d8 - 6)
HP: 25/25
DMG: 2

Theodore's outburst had Tantalite turning on one foot, her expression serious as she changed course suddenly and carefully - if only to not step on the Mau who was playing at being the boss. Whereas several had opted for rocks, Tantalite instead summoned her weapon.

"You can do better than that," she informed Fafnir, though there was no scathing judgment in her voice as she moved past him and Theodore to come in closer to the two Senshi who had been out on their own. Number wise it was nice, but...

But distraction would keep her from hitting as hard as she would have liked. Bah!

THEODORE HP: 19/20

DMG: 5 - 2 = 3 to Kevin

The rock hit him in the hat, which was, as far as Theodore was concerned, quiet possibly the WORST place he could have been hit. His hat was knocked off his head and he let out a noise that was halfway between a squeak and a shout.

"How dare," he scoffed, eyes narrowing before his little paws carried him forward and the jumped, claws out, at the boyish looking senshi who had been rude enough to cast a stone his way.

His tail flicked agitatedly as he clung to the bottom half of Kevin's fuku and tried to swipe.

In moments there was a captain in the senshi's face. Brows lifted as the stumbled back, trying to put themselves out of range. It didn't work and they'd caught a slight blow to the shoulder.

With a grunt and a balled fist, the super threw a punch back wanting that space back.

Arms were brought up protectively before their chest, bright eyes narrowed and wary.
