He now had a hefty list of people he had decided he would meet with to interview, so to speak. Some of them he knew more intimately than others and some he'd never met at all, but there were others who he knew because they fell beneath the umbrella that was his influence and reach.

One such was a semi-recent recruit and hire, Emilia Asher.

She worked more directly beneath Argent, but he had access to all of her files, within the company and within the negaverse. She seemed sharp witted enough and eager, in a controlled way, and came with Jade's recommendation.

So he'd sent her an email, stating that he needed to see her for a brief meeting.

Of course Emilia knew of Chase Black. She would occasionally see him around the office, but his name was what was much more present. That was thrown around often enough, as one of the owners of the company, and he was cc'd at the bottom of the more official emails. From what she could tell, he was important, if distant.

That made it quite the shock when she got an email notification and it was straight from Chase Black himself, to her and nobody else. Jade was the one who usually took care of things like work reviews and staff parties. All he said was that he wanted a meeting. The tone seemed terse, although Emmy didn't have a real point of reference. It gave her a sinking gut feeling that she didn't like, even though she didn't think she'd done anything worth a reprimand from the executive.

Rather than letting things stew, she saved her progress on the article she was writing about the new Pokemon reveals and made her way out of her cubicle. Within five minutes, she was outside of Mr. Black's office. She rapped on the doorframe with the back of her knuckles. "Sir?"

Chase couldn't remember a time when he wasn't considered intimidating either by virtue of his position(s) or the way he carried himself and he knew, the moment he hit send, that any sort of email would create a swirl of emotions that might not be pleasant within the recipient.

He had been doing many of these...casting calls but this was the first he'd done within the offices of Argent Industries that weren't with people he already knew would come.

"Come in," he called, voice carrying across the spacious office. "Shut the door," he instructed, paused and then added, "lock it, would you?" It might have been posed as a question, but the fact it was actually an order was clear.

"Please sit Miss, Asher."

Emmy obeyed almost mechanically. She stepped one foot through the door and then the other, then turned just enough to pull it shut behind her and flip the lock. That was a common reflex for her, not a change in routine like just being in this office. She had quickly gotten used to locked doors and important secrets.

She crossed over to his desk in a few strides, taking in the surroundings as she walked but focusing back on him as soon as she sat down. Her back stayed straight, a little too straight, maybe. She reminded herself that there was no reason not to be confident, but she still held a bit of tension. She crossed her ankles, and she folded her hands together on the desk.

"What did you want to discuss, sir?"

She kept her sharp gaze locked on his. It was a good chance to get a look at him, but all she saw was that he was good at keeping his face blank.

Chase liked watching the way people interacted around him. Emilia was not a stranger but not an associate either. She was an employee of his, a subordinate that fell beneath the command of an almost partner, someone who he thought could bend beneath his orders if he asked.

Her performance had been excellent so far, her ambition strong, and he liked that.

So far, she followed orders well enough which made her a good candidate and her work within AI showed a promising skill set he could use overseas.

"I have been tracking your progress," he began, fingers lacing together as his hands folded to rest atop the fine wood of his desk. "I would like to invite," carefully chosen words to give the illusion of choice, but his expectations were clear in his delivery, "you to accompany me on a mission overseas for the Negaverse."

Emmy's heart seemed very loud in her chest. It probably had something to do with the way she felt like a fly wing pressed between microscope slides for observation. She didn't slouch or look away, though. She simply smiled. There was something in Chase's posture that must have been part of why he seemed so powerful. She took note of it and tried to send the intensity of his gaze right back at him.

It was in his voice when he brought up the mission, and left her feeling that it wouldn't be smart to refuse.

"Overseas?" She nodded slowly, just deep enough to accept without being too submissive. When she looked back up, the corners of her mouth curled into a smile. "That sounds exciting."

He mentioned the Negaverse, but that could mean a lot of things. "Is this for business, or would it be something more for Jadarite?" It only mattered so much. Even in uniform, she had a stapler. Her skillset was clear. Still, she was interested in more information.

Watching Emilia attempt to mimic the way he held himself was almost amusing and if he were a more expressive person, she might have earned a smirk. As it were, he remained impassive as he gazed back at her.

"A bit of both," he answered, leaning forward almost as if he was disclosing a secret, which in a way, he was. All of the information was classified outside of what he chose to share. Later, once the mission was complete it would be accessible to anyone with the right credentials but for now, it was at his discretion.

"I feel as if you'll be able to utilize the skills you've shown and developed here at Argent Industries as well as develop key skills as Jadarite." While he was one of her commanding officers, he didn't care to dabble or intervene when it came to Jade's team.

This however was the exception and he was only taking one of hers.

"We leave at the end of the week. I trust you'll have your affairs in order."

She listened to the further information with half of her focus staying on maintaining solid, unwavering eye contact. It didn't seem like he was revealing any important information anyway, and yet he had still called her for a private meeting behind locked doors.

It made Emmy wonder what was really going on.

There was one way to find out, which seemed to be the only real option she was being offered, anyway. Chase was already laying out timelines, and ones that were very quickly approaching. Her steady gaze was wrecked when he said a week; she blinked hard, twice.

However, as this was both interesting and her full time job, she quickly nodded. "Of course, sir," she said. "I'll be ready."

She waited just a beat, then added, "Is that all?" As if leaving the country in a week wasn't enough, but still, she wanted a chance at the last word.

His golden gaze flicked up, watching her expression falter for the briefest of seconds. If he hadn't already appeared commanding, he now appeared smug on some level with the barest hint of an almost smirk teasing the edge of his mouth.

It was gone as quickly as it came, leaving anyone to wonder if they'd actually seen it or not.

"Good," he said, flat and firm. "If there's anything else, someone will be in touch." Not him, maybe him, or maybe someone directed by him, all hard to say with how little he cared to give her.

"You're dismissed." He waved his hand at her and paid her no further attention.

Just like that, he was finished.

Emilia's life was based around precision. She'd spent so much time speedrunning that sometimes it felt like she thought at 60 frames per second, and she tried to analyze every single one. That was to say, she did not miss the smirk, or doubt it.

She very much did not miss just how vague Chase was being. She doubted that it was one of the secrets to his success. She was not going to be more effective with less information. Her lips pressed together in a way that would have been barely perceptible to someone who was paying less attention, but she kept her gaze steady until her dismissal.

"If not, I'll see you then," she said with a slight smirk of her own, before she rose and left the office.

She did grin to herself in the stairwell on the way back to her desk. Weird meeting or no, she was going to Europe.
