Take it easy for a few days. Don't lift anything heavy. Light cardio is fine.

Marcus was a reasonable man when it came to making sure Lee didn't strain her body into serious injury - something she was very capable of doing if she wasn't careful. 'Light' cardio on a machine was an absolute joke, though, and Lee had instead opted for some late evening fresh air before the sun set. A jaunt around the park when the air wasn't quite cold yet.

Also there were less people to potentially trample from keeping her attention at eye level.

Lee had done two laps when she decided it was time for a break - not necessarily out of exhaustion, but rather for hydration and to make sure she didn't slosh her insides about too quickly with it. Such breaks allowed for too much time to think, however, reminding her quickly that the night often brought troublemakers and that she'd be wise to not dawdle long.

The cold air burned. It stuck in her nose and turned her cheeks pink, but at the pace she'd set herself, she wasn't really cold.

Aris could have used the track at the gym, but running laps inside was boring. There was nothing to see but off-white walls and sweating, puffing people, the ground springy and soft to lessen the impact. It was better out here, where she could see the trees and snow, watch the sky fade through its colors as night approached. She still got to see people here, though far less frequently and even less so as it got darker.

People in DC knew not to stay out after dark. It was only the brave or the foolish who stayed, or those who knew what the dark held.

It had been a while since she'd seen anyone else, enough that Aris was surprised when another figure came into view down the park path, standing off to the side with a bottle of water. She couldn't help her instinctual mistrust and the wariness that came with it. The two of them, alone in a darkening park? The tall woman wasn't worried, not really, but even that was washed right out of her head as she approached at a slow jog and the figure got bigger. And bigger. Aris slowed, falling to a walk as she... stared. Like a goober. With all the grace of a flat tire.

She looked like a woman, but she was tall... taller than Aris herself, and she usually loomed over most women. Some men too. This woman could have been a basketball player, if she hadn't been thick to go with it, the type of thick that said she wasn't really the type to go zipping up and down a court.

It served Aris right then, when she was repaid for lack of social grace by having her physical grace flee entirely.

No one really plowed the park paths, though there was some effort to keep them clean. Jogging on them was an act of faith, almost, and her foot came down on a patch of ice she hadn't noticed in her distraction or the failing light. The wipe out was a spectacular thing of slipping feet and suddenly gangly limbs, followed by a loud, heart-felt curse as Aris landed hard on her hands and knees, ponytail in her face and burning cold seeping into her skin. Stranger forgotten, she struggled back up, hissing at the scrapes and new bruises.

Punch through a wall just fine, but slip on some ice and suddenly everything hurts huh? Idiot.

There were always other people out in the park - not to say it was an over capacity location and that Lee could barely move without tripping over somebody else, but rather that someone else being out on a jog didn’t really draw much of the woman’s attention. Nor did the brief pause in Aris’s stride to look her over. Some things were simply a common response now, and she had stopped taking it personally long ago. At most she’d warn Aris that Zoo Hours were over and viewing time was done and to move on if it lingered too long.

The tumble interrupted that thought.

Lee’s instinct to reach out - honed by years of raising little girls who liked to trip and fall - would have likely kicked in if she’d had her attention more sharply on Aris, but instead a reactionary response would have to do, offering a hand out to the downed woman with an unchanging expression. “They should salt the pathways better,” she stated, displacing the incident pointedly.

It was embarrassing enough that she'd fallen, it was twice so that apparently she'd been seen to do so. Aris grimaced as she was offered help, but she forced herself to reach for the offered hand, ignoring the pain in her palm as she did so, and pulled herself to her feet.

Aris was a tall woman. Standing six foot and spare change, she was used to being at least on level with most men, or topping most of the people she met. Richtersveld had cleared her by a couple inches, which was unusual enough, but this woman... made her feel short. She had to tilt her head back more than she was used to in order to look up and meet her eyes.

"I should pay more attention to where I'm stepping." She retorted with a wry twist to her mouth. "It'd be my own fault if I twisted a ******** ankle."

"Aris." She said after a moment. She would have offered her hand if she hadn't still been holding the other's, and the new note of awkwardness made her respond by loosening her stance, cocking a hip and letting her spine curve comfortably. It was more of a confident look than she actually felt, but that was the point.

Lee's grip was firm as she pulled Aris up to her feet, her expression mostly unchanging, though there was an almost instinctive look over her hands and knees. Should rinse those, she thought to herself, taking a moment to look over the park to see if she could spot the closest option for it. If there was any judgement over the tumble, the giant woman was not quick to share it - or make any sign it was there.

"Perhaps," it wasn't a clear answer, but if the stranger wanted to play it off, Lee wouldn't draw too much attention to the hint of shame behind her choice in words.

Squeezing the hand she still held in mimic of a handshake, Lee then released it and folded her arms squarely across her chest, giving a more intimidating stance than intended. "Lee," she finally answered, offering her water bottle. "Rinse off," she advised.

Aris was not intimidated. She told herself. Lee was tall and had a firm handshake, but the width of her shoulders only meant that mechanically she might have the advantage in a fight if it came down to strength.

And who said we were gonna fight anyway?

The offered water bottle was a surprise, as was the deep voiced command. Her immediate reaction was to brush it off and Aris was shrugging before she thought about it, her lips curling.

"Its not that bad, it just stings." The woman said with a shrug of a shoulder and a clap as she dusted her hands together to knock off any dirt she had picked up. Which... maybe she should have done before shaking hands, but oh well. Bending, she dusted her leggings too, though it only marginally lightened the salty marks and darkened wet spots. "I've had worse, honestly, on runs like this."

Usually because she ran into a monster along the way, which was a point to consider.

"Ah... what brings you out so late, anyway?" She said carefully as she straightened, rubbing her palms on her thighs now. Careful, to try and keep her tone light and not as searching as she felt. "Most people in DC don't like being out when its getting dark. Its not real safe when you're alone."

The hand holding out the waterbottle didn't move, though the directive was not repeated. "If it wasn't bad, your body wouldn't be warning you that it was hurt," Lee stated, despite not pushing it. She was hardly the person who should have been saying anything of the sort - her entire living was pain, after all. "To have worse does not make it bad idea to tend to things when they are better," a scraped knee was still a scraped knee at the end of the way.

Lee glanced over the park at Aris' question, her neutral expression pulling into a frown. "The dark is only a threat if you are afraid of what is in it," she answered, "and there are too many nice things in the night to fear a little trouble." Perhaps something that could only be said because of her broad build that likely intimidated anything that would think itself weaker than her. Unfortunately there were more things out at night that could have challenged such a thing that hadn't been met yet.

The bottle was still hanging between them. Inwardly, Aris groaned. The woman was speaking good sense, even if she didn't much like it, or think it worth the attention that was being paid. She could ignore it, but that would be rude, probably...

Was it really worth matching wills with her?

The shorter woman took the bottle without comment and rinsed water across one palm, and then the other. It was cold... but not any colder than the ground had been. It felt good, even if the skin still stung in a faint way. Not that she was going to comment on that either. The knees were harder, requiring her to get the tight cuff of her leggings up over thick calves and thicker thighs so she could reach, not helped much by the sting in her hands.

The skin was pink where she had fallen, and dimpled from the concrete, but unbroken. She still rubbed it down with a wet hand, lest she get some admonishment for that too, and finally handed the water bottle back, tugging her pants down.

"You don't have to be afraid of a car running a red light to be killed by it." She pointed out. "A gang that decided it didn't like you in its territory could still kill you, even with your height and arms."

"I suppose its the nice things then, that bring you out into a DC night. I like the lack of crowds, personally." It was true, if not the real reason why she was out, herself. Its possible this Lee had the same reasons, but it made her wonder which side she worked for, if that was the case. Was she casually chatting with a negaverse agent? No way to tell, though she gave the woman a surreptitious look from under her lashes as she grabbed her ankle and lifted it, stretching out leg muscles gone a little stiff.

She wanted to ask why the woman ran alone, but... that was another question as easily applied to herself.

"I could use the company though... if you maybe wanted to finish our runs together. You know... companionably."

If they stuck together, she could keep an eye on her. Maybe keep an eye out for her other nights. Could keep her safe against what she wasn't afraid of, or find out if this was someone she needed to take down, and it was something of a win win either way.
