The university had various things going on for Valentines day, different clubs running various things. It was no surprise, it had been the same in high school. But this time he'd decided to participate - sort of. He wasn't helping a group or anything like that, that was too much work for him, but rather he had browsed over the roses, so many different ones and in all different colors, until he'd found one which was perfect for the person in mind. The chart, of colors and meanings, was ignored as he paid for the rose and as he walked off he sent Gabriel a text.
Hitting send he smiled gently at the phone he held in his hand. He'd asked if the other was busy or if they could grab lunch together in the cafeteria.
Heading that way, glancing down at his phone every few moments, he only just avoided slamming into a person...and a wall....also a vending machine. He was, obviously, preoccupied with his phone and waiting to see if Gabriel responded. The whole while he was drawing closer to the cafeteria himself.

Gabriel liked Valentine's Day for a totally unrelated reason to love and all the decorations. On this day, he was another year older. A lot of people hated getting older, year after year. It was something he really didn't mind. The freedom of being an adult was honestly a delight. Not that he got into any crazy or did a complete one-eighty once he got out of his parents house. It was just nice to be out from under their watchful eyes. With each year they focused less and less on him.
The Holiday itself was something he ignored for the most part. He didn't know the first thing about dating and was probably totally clueless if there was someone out there trying to throw themselves at him. Blind dates weren't his thing either. Though he was social enough to go to parties and get along with people, that didn't translate to a more intimate setting.
As he was walking across campus, just finishing up a class, his phone vibrated in his pocket. It had been going off all day. His social media was blowing up with the birthday wishes, so were his texts.
In the mess of it all he noticed one that stood out. Probably because it didn't start with 'Happy Bday!' Gabriel sent a quick response that he was done with classes for now and would definitely be down for grabbing some lunch in the cafeteria. As luck would have it though, maybe not so much luck since they were both headed in the same direction, Gabriel turned down the side walk and spotted Xi-Wang a few people ahead of him
He took a few big strides and weaved through a few people in order to catch up to him. "Wouldn't it be weird if you saw me and got my text at the same time? Oooo!" He wiggled his fingers a bit, like it was magic that he had appeared just as his message went out to his new friend.

Turning, surprised by the others appearance, and laughed. "It might be but I wouldn't mind." Smiling he reached out with his free hand and tugged gently. "Enjoying the holiday?" He'd caught someone sneezing earlier, a lot, and heard them grumbling about allergies - he felt for them.
When he got the other to stop he moved, almost shuffling, to stand in front of the other. Holding up, and out, the single dark red rose he'd gotten for the other. "I ummm...I got this for you." It was, thankfully, in good shape. He'd been fussy, really fussy, in making sure the petals weren't curled or turning color. The flower wasn't fully opened, so it had time, it was a overly color as well. It wasn't that overly bright red color either. It was a nicer - darker red color.

Dang, he had hoped to maybe get a little jump scare out of the younger man. Too, bad. Gabriel smiled and stuffed his phone back into the side pocket of his backpack. "I haven't done much yet. Got some plans for dinner with the family later. Not for Valentine's though. It's my birthday!" He didn't expect Xi-Wang to have know that. They had become quick friends, but he didn't make a habit of bragging about his birthday to people he'd only known for a few weeks.
He was going to ask him if he had any plans for today, when Xi-Wang stopped him on their way to the cafeteria. Was he expecting to get anything from Xi-Wang? No, but it was a lovely rose and at first he didn't know what to say. There was a little bit of guilt there for not getting him something, but he'd never given out gifts on Valentine's before. Not just because it was his birthday, but because hew never had anyone that special to give something to. Maybe a piece of chocolate here or there, for friends, but that was it.
"Oh. W-wow! This is really great. Very nice. Happy Valentine's day!" Should he have been the one saying that, when he was the one being given a gift? It was obvious he was a little flustered, but he did appreciate the gift. Gabriel would have to get him something in return later. For now he accepted the flower and wrapped Xi-Wang into a tight hug.

"I'm glad you like it." He was, very glad, and ducking his head a bit he offered for Gabriel to take. "Let's go get something to eat? I'm done with classes for the day...and I didn't want to go home yet." He also didn't have work today - holiday. It wasn't some national holiday, or a big day per say, but it was a holiday and he had the day off.
"Happy birthday also." He hadn't known or he might have gotten something else for the other, or done something for him. But he hadn't known and he sort of felt bad, though he did understand why he didn't know.
Shuffling a bit...unsure if he should say more...or do more, he moved, rather quickly, to the others side again and took hold of the others shirt to hold onto him. "I didn't know what to get you for today...to show that I care. It's cliche...but I thought you might like it." It wasn't that he had romantic feelings per say, he didn't as far as he could tell for himself, but he did care about the other. Gabriel was his, in that he'd brought the other into the dark mirror court, and the other was his to car for and train. he wanted the other to feel welcomes and cared for...to feel special - because he was.

Maybe it had been a bit weird to just blurt out that it was his birthday there. But, it was something Xi-Wang would probably like to know at some point. It wasn't anyone's fault that they actually hadn't known each other for all that long yet.
"Lunch sounds good. I'm done for the day as well." His roommate would have to figure out lunch on his own for a change. Usually he'd just head back to his dorm for some grilled cheese or something, but lunch with Xi-Wang sounded more fun.
"Thank you~ Another year older, another year wiser!" And another year closer to being done with school, which meant he'd really have to settle on a major soon if he wanted to graduate on time. He pushed those thoughts out of his head though, for now he just wanted to have a nice Birthday, without any worries.
"I really do like it a lot. I'm just sorry I didn't get your anything in return. It you're not opposed to me treating you on my birthday, then I'd love to pay for lunch." It only seemed fair that he did something in return.

"That's good. I didn't know if you were done for the day or not." But he'd hoped the other would, at the very least, be free to grab for lunch. It was good that Gabriel was free, and not just for a short time either.
"Mmm, and that's good - another year older." In this city, knowing now what he did, that seemed like a blessing - to make another year. This city had always been dangerous but now he knew more about it, understood and had seen more. He just hoped he'd be around Gabriel whenever he got in too deep; to keep him safe. He didn't want the other being tossed, or pulled, into the deep end unprepared.
"N-no. I don't mind. If you want to pay then you can." Nodding his head he gripped onto the others shirt. "Let's go then, before too many fill up the cafeteria." And they sold out of whatever good foods were in there, thankfully the place had pretty good food. "Next time though I'm treating you to a meal."

Oh thank goodness, he didn't know what to do if Xi-Wang also insisted on treating him to lunch. It wasn't that he didn't want to be in debt to him or anything, he just really wanted to return the favor some time today and he wouldn't really have a chance to after lunch. He needed to head home afterwards.
"Well, since next time if your treat we'll have to think of something better then cafeteria food." Not that he didn't like the campus cafeteria, they actually had some decent stuff form time to time. His biggest problem with it, if anything, was that it was noisy and loud. It reminded him of high school lunches at times, everyone yelling over each other, trying to enjoy their thirty minutes of freedom before dragging their feet back to class.
There would be a bit of a rush around this time of day. Part of him hoped there would be fewer students heading to the cafeteria. Maybe some of them had plans for the day that involved lunch off campus. One could hope. They were already close to the building and he held the door open for his new friend.
"After you."

"I'll think of some ideas then." And he'd share them with Gabriel the next time they had time to talk, or he'd just text the other. He'd likely text him.
Rather than walk ahead of the other Xi-Wang kept at the others side, holding onto the others clothing, as he headed them both towards the cafeteria. He was hoping they'd have a good meal set up for today, it was Valentines after all. This was panning out to be a good day so far. Another friend and another family member. Life was good.
(Finished.)
