Winter was settling hard over city, and flecks of ice sparkled in the air, even without the presence of snow. Jet had his cape wrapped around him as he peered over the edge of the building. There didn’t seem to be any senshi or knights stupid enough to be out in the cold, it seemed. Which was good for him, because he didn’t feel like fighting that night.

Even though senshi and knights weren’t out, there was another presence that flared into existence not too far from where he kept watch. A captain, by the feel of the aura.

But Jet didn’t realize that he knew the other man until he teleported down to where he’d appeared in the alley.

“You had white fur before. The black suits you better, I think,” Jet said, his voice lowered as it was prone to carry farther on the chilled air. “Captain Nissonite. I thought you looked familiar when I saw you before, but didn’t know for sure until I found your file,” he explained, hoping the other wouldn’t feel too offended that he’d taken the liberty of looking up who he was… and who he had been.

Which meant one of two things…

“The part of your file I found didn’t indicate whether you joined of your own accord, or if you were forced…”

Camping near bars was the easiest way to fill an energy quota quickly, and with the chill in the air quick was ideal. Otto had waited until he was in the shadow of the alley before powering up to Nissonite, and was immediately aware that he was not alone. There was another agent damn near on top of him, stronger. Gone one minute and beside him the next.

"General." It was a casual drawl that came with an easy smile. A smile that faltered as he got a good look at the younger man addressing him. "Jet."

He didn't have any memories of what he might have looked like as a page or even as a squire, or at all. That he'd run into Jet as Baikal was news to him, but clearly the general recognized him, and since glamour would have prevented him from seeing the civilian he and Amphitrite had been watching over at the carnival however many years back, it had to have been the knight the general had met before.

But in what context?

He wasn't the only one with questions, but Niss could only shrug to the general. "I don't know. I don't remember how it happened, or anything leading up to it. I don't remember being a knight at all." The only thing he had to go on was what Chase had told him when he'd woken up after the fact. "I'd assume It wasn't entirely by choice, since it was apparently done to protect me, but that's as much as I know."

The fact that Nissonite didn’t know how he joined the Negaverse was concerning, but it hadn’t occurred to Jet, until that moment, that the Captain standing in front of him had no idea who he was, or what he’d done for him. Other than knowing he was a General named Jet.

“Well,” Jet mumbled, forcing himself to try and sound casual even as he could feel heat filling his cheeks, “Better with the Negaverse than as a knight.”

What exactly had he expected to say to this man when he crossed paths with him? He’d been pleased to find out that the man who looked so familiar had been a knight of Mercury who was brought to their side, but now that he was there and talking to Nissonite with no good reason…

“You shouldn’t stay out too late in the cold. Don’t worry about your quota if you haven’t filled it yet. I’ll handle it,” Jet said as he shifted on his feet, tightening the cape around him. He figured it was the least he could do for someone who had shown him an ounce of kindness when others had not. Not that Jet had any plans on telling Nissonite what happened.

That was an odd reaction. "I don't resent it or anything." True, he missed his family and his brother but they were likely safer with him not in the picture. He had a good job that utilized his degree, he had his apartment and possessions thanks to his general. He had his girls, Rory and Desdemona, and even if he'd had nothing else they'd have been enough for him.

He wasn't entirely sure what he expected to hear from the younger man, but an offer to take care of his quota certainly hadn't made the list. It had pale brows arching, head tilting just a bit, and that was enough for the scar on the left side of his face to catch what little light there was in the alleyway. Still a little pink, but completely healed.

"That's awfully nice of you, but I have to wonder why you'd make generous an offer to a captain you don't know." What exactly had transpired between them for this general to have not only looked him up, but was now offering to do his job for him.

Jet shrugged at the skeptical look and question he received for his offer. He supposed it was strange for others to offer to do work for them… if they weren’t used to it. This hadn’t been the first time Jet had offered to cover for someone else, and it definitely wouldn’t be the last. For him, it was the easiest way to show his appreciation, whether the other realized it or not.

“I’ve collected extra already. If you get sick and can’t meet your quotas later, it’ll be more detrimental to the Negaverse than me offering to cover for you with what I already have.”

There was no need for him to pull memories to the surface that he would rather not relive. Especially when Nissonite couldn’t remember. Only Jet would suffer for the cost of an explanation.

“Your scar,” he said then, lifting his own hand to point to his own cheek and neck. “Youma? Did that happen when you were recruited?” It was newer than when he’d met Nissonite as a knight.

It wasn't a good reason, but it was clear the general was avoiding answering Nissonite's question with anything more than that. The captain could press him, see if he could dig beneath what was presented on the surface, but this was a superior officer and Niss had more respect than that.

He let it go, though the look he gave the shorter man made it clear he wasn't buying it. Whatever past history they had, Jet was in no hurry to share.

But that in mind, the shift in topic wasn't all that surprising. Nissonite reached up to trace the healing scar on the side of his face, lips tugging up in hollow amusement. "Before, I don't..." He shook his head, trying to sift through the scattered remnants of his memories. "There was a youma, it attacked us, and then...nothing." There were only fragments left, disconnected and chaotic. It was like trying to hold water in cupped hands.

Jet sucked in a breath and let it out slowly, not at all thrilled by the idea of B- … of Nissonite being injured prior to being recruited. How had it happened? He would have to try and dig through whatever reports he could find, especially since it sounded like Nissonite couldn’t remember.

“I’m sorry that happened,” he said, and opened his mouth as though he was going to say more, but stopped. What could he possibly say that would make up that introduction into the Negaverse? He could say that Nissonite hadn’t deserved to be attacked like that, but then he would probably be revealing more than he wanted.

It was better that Nissonite couldn’t remember.

“Things will get easier for you, over time. I’m glad you’re on our side now.” A pause, and then Jet added, “We need all the help we can get.”

In all likelihood it probably was better that Nissonite didn't remember. One less traumatic event to add to the many that'd occurred since he'd been corrupted. It seemed like any time he and Des went out something crazy happened. Usually their own damn people ******** up royally, like at the medi center.

Jet's apology was met with a shrug and a smile. "It's fine, I don't remember it happening." Only how much the damn thing hurt as it healed. Which...okay, part of that had been his own damn fault for letting the gash on his chest get infected, but that was completely beside the point. It was done and over with now, and no one that mattered minded the scar so it was no big loss.

His head tipped looking down at the general thoughtfully, convinced they much have crossed paths in the past but having no memories of it. But if Jet was glad he'd been drawn into the Negaverse then they must have parted ways on good terms, right? "It's been an adjustment, and I hate what my disappearance must have done to my brother and my family, but there've been some definite perks."

Niss grinned. "The senshi that was working with you at the carnival, Amphitrite. Turns out I've known her all this time, and since she's on our side as well I get to stay in her life. And Rory's, she's a corrupt senshi too."
