Quote:
At some point, you notice a present nestled somewhere in your house that you've never seen before. Maybe it's somewhere obvious, maybe it's sitting on a window sill or hidden in the back of your closet. It's decorated very festively, with a cursive script letting you know that the present's owner is none other than yourself but there's no sender listed on the tag. Who in the world could have put it there?

Opening the present reveals an item that you've sorely wanted for some time now but haven't been able to afford or haven't allowed yourself the pleasure of buying. The trouble is that you've never told a soul about wanting it.

Who could have known? And how did it get there?

Knot was currently seated at Jules' kitchen island, a large steaming mug of homemade (because of course it was, it was Jules) hot chocolate between her hands. The rich aroma of baking filled the air, and Knot looked around at the various bowls and plates of edible decorations she was surrounded by. Tubes of frosting, an assortment of M&Ms, gumdrops of various colors---the details just went on and on. Why? Well, she was apparently about to get a crash course in creating gingerbread men cookies.

And until the cookies were ready, the woman was happy to chill and drink this delicious hot chocolate so that she could gorge herself on more.

"So, Jules---" Knot started. "I have a little story for you---that actually happened just the other day. You know that sailboat Dallas won off that guy in a poker game a while back?" She paused, briefly. "I challenged him for it."

Baking cookies was always a nice break from the toils and troubles of the real world but it was even more fun when she got to share the experience with someone else. And, considering how few people were actually around in Jules' world, it was a special treat in itself for her to actually have someone over to experience the fun with.

It hadn't taken long to make the dough, Jules freezing the night before the designated meet-up day she'd arranged with the younger woman. Julianne wanted to spend the majority of their visiting time decorating, not simply prepping, so she'd gone ahead and done the boring stuff to allow Knot the ability to maximize her time on cooking decorating focusing.

Rolling out the dough and cutting the shapes with the cutters had been fairly simple, Knot picking up the knack for it as natural as Jules had, when she was a child. Rewarded with cocoa, the white haired girl had stepped back to allow Jules to transition the tray from counter to oven, the older woman soon collecting her own mug to enjoy while the smell of gingerbread filled the kitchen.

"What exactly did you challenge him to?"

A quick sip and Jules found herself pausing, the mental images springing up all involving either illegal or inappropriate things. Closing her eyes, she shook her head.

"Wait." "Do I want to know how you challenged him to it?"

Knot grinned at the woman, her eyes creasing with amusement.

"Oh, you do. It's clean." She replied. "I challenged him to arm wrestling."

Knot paused for dramatic effect, also to take another sip of hot cocoa. "I tried being fair, first. Challenged him to poker. That was a mistake. He had me down to my bra and panties, but was feeling charitable so he let me pick the game to win it from him." Knot then looked off to the side for a moment.

"But you know, he's Dallas, so if I were to lose the arm wrestling match---I was going to lose my Russian purity streak. That man is a dog. So I was a wee bit worried, but not much. I cheated." She was back to grinning. "So this body is still all for the Motherland, and I got myself a sailboat now." Knot took another drink.

"So you should ask him about it sometime. He was pleased yet pissed at the same time." The woman laughed a bit, before focusing on the woman. "What have you been up to, hm?"

The smile on her face perked up in amusement as Knot explained about the wrestling match. It was a curious choice, especially judging by how... well, massive Dallas was. Did Knot really feel like she had a chance against the larger man in a game of strength? Not that Jules didn't think Knot wasn't strong... but she lacked the sheer muscle that the cowboy displayed and...

Julianne's smile faltered at the mention of poker and panties.

She'd played strip poker with the horn dog?

It fell completely, twisting into a scowl when the snowy haired girl mentioned her purity streak. Jules had a feeling that Knot wasn't a virgin - not that it was really her business - but for Dallas to put sex on the line for a woman who wasn't interested...

She took a deep breath and struggled to hold back the urge to grab the nearest, biggest wooden spoon that she had and not teleport herself over to his ranch as Angelite and whap the absolute crap out of that giant of a man.

"You'll have to take me out sailing sometime, if you know how to steer something like that." Her voice was a little flat as she fought to keep her cheerfulness intact. God, she knew she should have added a little alcohol to the cocoa - that man was going to drive her into being a drinker, before the end of the year.

"Sounds like he got the beating he deserved - man could use a little more humility in his life."

Knot didn't mean to laugh, but she couldn't help it as Jules' expression rapidly shifted. Oh no. She was totally getting Dallas in trouble with Jules. She could tell. The cowboy probably wouldn't bat an eye lash to be honest, but she was still amused none the less.

"Oooh, it's okay, Jules." She assured, leaning forward in her chair and waving a hand at the woman. "It turned out alright. I wouldn't have made a bet against him if I wasn't sure I could win it---so I was never really in danger of having to meet his demands." She grinned, lightly. "I'll try! I need to actually learn how to sail, first." The woman laughed, "Don't think he'll ever have a lesson in humility---I think it will just make him more insufferable to be honest."

She winked.

"Say...are you guys dating?"

The hand wave snapped her attention away from the imaginative scenario playing out in Jules' head on how she was going to punish Dallas for being an uncouth cad to such a precious girl. Knot must have sensed the tension because she was quickly trying to defend him - bless her heart, she was a good kid, looking after that handsome mutt the way she did.

Wait. Were they... what?

"Oh, I don't know if I'd call it that."

Fingers squeezed the mug she was cupping, a pink flush crossing her cheeks as she allowed herself a moment to dwell on the question. They had never really... talked about it, Dallas and her. He simply showed up whenever he felt like it and if she needed a hand with something or wanted company when going somewhere, she shot him a text.

Did that... did that qualify as dating or were they just friends with frequent benefits?

Was friends with benefits even a thing, anymore?

"He's got his good qualities, I suppose."

Sipping on the cocoa, she hurried her way over to the oven, flipping on the light so she could peer inside at the rising cookies, doing her best to distract from the line of questioning she'd been addressed with.

Knot smiled. Oh, how she understood that incredibly well. The whole 'what do you call it' dilemma. She didn't miss the way the woman flushed though, and her smile widened.

"I'm rooting for you guys, one hundred and ten percent." She told Jules cheerfully. "Yeah, he comes and goes like an obnoxious tumbleweed blowing across the wastelands, and he can deny it all he wants, but you guys just should be dating. He doesn't go sauntering his way back to any other woman repeatedly." None that she'd seen, during the time she had spent with him, whether it be on the job or during downtime at the ranch or just in dive bars in general. Seriously. The actions spoke for themselves.

"...I don't really know what people have against commitment." Knot mused, shifting from Dallas to just...men she knew in general. "They're all like, 'oh, just want to live the good and free life, commitment is stupid' but you know what I think?" It was a rhetorical question, of course. "People who won't commit are just cowards. It's harder to be committed. It takes work and effort, as it should, it actually means something...so when people say they won't commit, I'm just going to start telling them that they're lazy, scared, and selfish."

Knot smiled.

"This is also an incredibly gross oversimplification of a lot of scenarios, but you know what I mean."

He doesn't go sauntering his way back to any other woman repeatedly.

Granted, knowing that Dallas was hopping beds wasn't the most romantic gesture but the comment in itself had little butterflies fluttering in her stomach all the same. To be considered special to someone was... refreshing. Nice.

Jules couldn't help the flush, one hand moving up to gently fan herself as if she blamed the warmth of the oven as the culprit behind her colored cheeks. As Knot continued to muse aloud, the smile softened significantly as fingers nervously rubbed on the outside of her mug.

"Commitment can end pretty terribly, though." A quick sip and she struggled to find the right words for what she was thinking. "Sometimes people may have found themselves hurt by in, so they're a little gun shy about pulling the trigger a second time."

Silence fell over Jules as she contemplated the notion. It wasn't that she was against the idea, it just...

Well. Having your life turned upside down once because of a man was bad enough, allowing a second the chance to do the same thing was...

It was something she wasn't going to think about at the moment.

"I think the cookies will be ready soon," Her mug was set aside as she moved towards the oven, glancing inside before sweeping across the kitchen and fetching supplies here and there, "We should probably get started on the icing, if we don't want to be stuck in here all day."

Knot watched Jules fan herself, and she couldn't help but smirk, lightly. She set her mug down, and slid forward along the counter towards the woman. One hand rested on the polished counter surface, and the other cupped her chin as she eyed the woman. "Oh, I'm not disregarding that..." She trailed off for a moment. "But isn't it better to try if there's a chance, than to live with the regret of not?" Her brows raised as she looked towards the woman. "Also I like how you used a gun as the metaphor. It's like you have someone in mind..."

As Jules turned towards the oven though, Knot chuckled lightly, and straightened herself back up.

"But I like being here all day." She informed the other, and looked around once more at the icing and decorations. "So I've never decorated gingerbread men before." Knot said. That she could remember, anyways. "I've googled some pictures though---doing something basic seems boring so...what should I do?" She was open to suggestions.

Knot was far too clever for her own good and Jules had a feeling if she let the woman to her own devices, she'd be playing matchmaker faster than she could get the cookies out of the oven.

"You can't really do it wrong," she offered back, amused at how quickly the snowy haired girl was ready to jump into things. The cookies were shuffled from tray to cooling rack, icing collected and prepared in cozy, neat little dispensers.

After all, she wouldn't be much of a baker if she wasn't organized.

"So no pansy gingermen, I see." It was Julianne's turn to smile, a sly one spreading as she offered the girl the blue icing. "How about an officer? If we're talking about men on our mind, it could be cute to see how a little police officer turned out~"

As if to prove her point, she leaned over with the black icing and drew a simple face -- and a very distinct scowl to go along with it.

"Does that look serious enough to you?"

A brow quirked as Jules' smile turned sly. Knot took the blue icing when it was offered, and when she mentioned a gingerbread officer, both of Knot's brows shot into her bangs. Oh. Well. Then. Fair play. She watched as Jules drew the scowling face, and she couldn't help but laugh, even when she was hit with a stinging pang.

It was just so painfully accurate, and it was in a gingerbread form.

"Almost." Knot replied, and put down the blue icing to grab another tube of black. She then drew in some very angry and furrowed eye brows. "Now it is." She looked down at it, and briefly, the smile slipped from her face. "Him and I are on the rocks right now." Knot said after a moment, but she didn't want to worry the woman, so she tried to make light of the situation.

The woman reached and nudged another gingerbread cookie closer to the started officer one. She then started to draw another simple face on this one, except it was less scowl-y. Actually, it smirked. "But don't worry---I have a side man." She told Jules, glancing up to give the woman a half smirk. "He's Russian, too. Tall, dark, thick and handsome and has the accent as well. Oh, and also a raging boner for justice---but---" She pointed at the second cookie she started. "He's in the Russian Ballet." Not really but...kind of. She couldn't tell Jules he was a Knight.

"And he took me on an incredibly fantastic outing for my birthday. I dare say it was pretty romantic, even." Knot paused, looking down at the two cookies, and then back up at Jules.

"So---we should make a cowboy one as well...how would you make a five-o-clock shadow, Jules?" Knot grinned lightly. "Sprinkle some cinnamon, on some frosting on the face, perhaps?"

At seeing the crestfallen look on the younger woman, Jules's maternal instinct had her reaching out to take the girl's shoulder. She hesitated though, not wanting to draw more attention to the issue than it needed as Knot seemed to be eager to avoid chatting about it.

She was worried, though, and it came across in her expression as she quickly forced a smile and shifted the conversation back to her companion's tangent.

"A side man? Goodness. I don't know how you manage to juggle all of that in and cookie decorating. Busy woman, I see." The older woman took a step to the side, pulling out a faceless, plain cookie for herself as she listened to her friend chatter, all the while debating what to do with her John Doe.

The icing paused, however, when the mention of birthday came out.

"Your birthday? You had your birthday and you didn't even tell me?"

Horror stricken, blue eyes widened and Jules made a mental note to smack Jimmy Wayne an extra time or two with her rolling pin for letting such an important tidbit slide by without her knowing. The poor girl had a birthday and Jules hadn't done anything for her! And, god only knew Dallas hadn't done anything - besides probably offer up his services, the dog.

"We'll have to celebrate -- I'm not going to take no for an answer, ma'am," she clucked her tongue and shook her head, mostly ashamed at herself for letting such an event get missed by the usually highly-organized woman.

The icing made it halfway across the mouth when the mention of a cowboy had her hand freezing. A five o'clock shadow? On a cookie?

"I... we could test it out?" The color was back and Jules found herself surprisingly satisfied with the half-made smile, the line having curved up into a smirk of its own. Leave it to Jimmy Wayne Dallas to manage a smirk, even in cookie form.

Turning around to the cabinets, she dug around until she found her canister of cinnamon and her sugar container. A quick mix and she had her material - spreading out a very, very thin amount of icing provided a sticky surface for the cinnamon-sugar mixture to cling to.

"You do realize that we're going to have to eat our cookie men after we're finished, right?"

Knot just smiled. Oh yes. Busy indeed...

She then blinked, and couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Oh, yes...it was on the twenty-first. I didn't want to make a production of it, don't worry Jules---" Except she knew it was pointless to argue, especially once the woman confirmed she wouldn't take 'no' for an answer.

"I'm not arguing ma'am." She returned, raising both hands in a placating gesture of surrender, before she resumed applying icing to the two cookies she was working on. Knot looked up at various points from decorating to see how Jules was coming along with the cowboy cookie, and she wasn't disappointed by the five-o-clock shadow.

The sight of it, combined with the icing smirk, made the woman grin.

"Oh, I think eating the cookies will actually be cathartic." Knot replied in earnest, and point at the Dallas cookie.

"Think we could make a cowboy hat out of something, too? I mean if we're going all out, we're going all out."

Pleased that her impromptu birthday plan hadn't been protested, Jules was already busy trying to come up with a quick way to celebrate on last minute's notice. No doubt the white haired girl would have New Year's plans with her special --- well, side piece, if she was on the outs with her officer, but young pretty women like her surely had plans for the major holidays.

Oh, how it'd be nice to be young and carefree like that again.

"Now Knot, we don't wear hats in the house, after all~"

Still, fingers were searching around their array of confectionery supplies in search for anything that would aid her in crafting a quick, tasty little hat for the cookie version of their incorrigible cowboy. Once finished, she lifted the small treat up carefully, showing it off as if she were waiting to pose for a camera.

"I think you might be right -- taking a bite out of my friend here may do me some good this evening, ha."
