Walking home one night, you happen to come across a rather cozy looking holiday pop-up store. Sweet and wonderful smells waft out from its doors, and once you step inside, you find a rather jolly looking man in a snowman costume handing out free samples of what he would like to call “Frosty Frappes”.

It seems trustworthy enough, as there are multiple people already happily sipping away at their drinks at nearby tables and you decide that you’ll take one and go about your way.

It’s sweet and cinnamony with just a hint of something cold. Mint? Ginger? Well, whatever it is, your body feels cooler, and there’s an itch in the back of your throat. You clear your throat, and first it comes out normal… Then you find yourself humming, then whistling… And finally, you can’t stop, every word you say comes out in song. No matter how hard you try, your thoughts come out in song as if you were born to sing! An hour passes, and soon enough singing dies down and you can talk normally once again. For the next week or so though, you find yourself humming or singing softly to yourself while doing mundane tasks. Luckily for you, it also seems like you can hit the notes for now![/quote

It was a Trial for Slate to choose between the different holiday drink specials, be they from Starbucks or another local coffee shop or a tea shop or even some of the rickety-looking pop-up stands that tried to emulate old cottages. And while Slate wasn't terribly festive, a lot of people were, and everybody needed to drink things. Combined, it seemed like a good place to start for rewarding Alexas for her new rank and continued good work as a Negaverse officer. The problem was, though, he had no idea what kind of drinks Alexas liked. She often brought sweet things to their meet-ups, but 'sweet' meant pretty much every drink was still on the table. Except the buttered rum maybe. They weren't old enough for that, which kinda sucked, but hopefully she wouldn't be too disappointed.

Slate decided the whole thing would have to ride on what he liked, for now, until he learned what Alexas liked. And Slate enjoyed drinking cold drinks in the cold, so something like the frosty frappés offered by the dingy pop-up store at the park between the school districts really appealed. Bundled proper in two jackets and a sweater with long johns under his jeans, Slate made a point to pay it a visit.

And once he finished standing in line for two minutes (which was weird — shouldn't the holiday places have, like, the biggest line since big lines? Maybe that meant the frappés weren't that good?) and received his two drink orders, he pinned both of them under one arm and pulled his cell phone for a quick text. Maybe she'd be busy, or still in school, or working one of those super lame dead-end jobs like the one he had at the coffee shop and couldn't come, and then he'd need to figure out where she was and bring the drink to her if that wasn't too weird and creepy, or he'd find out she doesn't like frappés at all and he'd have to give this one to Porsha or something — wait, he didn't get Porsha anything — okay, but all that has to wait.

Right. Phone out. Alexas's contact selected. Start writing the message.

Alexa was actually in class when she got the text. Government. At least, that was what it was supposed to be, although it usually just ended up as a big debate. The textbook was all like, the government is perfect, which didn't really go over well, and today, in the last couple minutes of school, the girl who usually roasted the people up in the other DC had moved on to the concept of capitalism as a whole.

That was a pretty common topic here, too, so Alexa turned her attention to her phone, which held much more exciting news. Slate! With a surprise! Alexa was always up for surprises, and this was the time of year when surprises tended to be awesome, and she was really into the whole thing where people were giving her stuff just for upgrading.

So, with a grin and a careful glance up at the teacher, she shot back a quick,

Quote:
Yeah! Gimme 10 minutes, I'll be there!!! <3

The girl's rant, like always, got cut off just in time for the teacher to give them all a whole load of homework. Alexa didn't really care. That stuff could wait. She had places to be! She shoved her papers into her backpack, crumpling them a bit, then did her best to weave through the crowds towards the door.

Luckily after that she was pretty much there, since it was right next to Meadowview like he'd said, probably to give the cross county team a place to practice or something. Unfortunately, meeting as civilians meant there were no auras to track people down by, and a quick glance didn't show any telltale red hair, so she curled up in the first park bench she found and turned back to her phone.

Quote:
Hi! I'm here, by the school. Where are you?

      Slate Blackwell wrote: coming!

A minute passed, then two. Central park wasn't as big as the real Central Park, maybe a hundred acres spread over some weird civic planning that led to Slate going the opposite direction at first. After opening Google Maps and looking at the school then, walking a few feet to find out where he was going in relation to the school, then finding he was again not going the right way, Slate finally reoriented himself enough to actually find the fence that separated school and park. Small steps led to success, he told himself.

By the time he reached the part nearest the school, Slate spotted her straight away. Destiny City was full of weird hairstyles and crazy colors, but Alexa's hair was pretty unique for how downplayed it was. It was like she didn't need to overcompensate for anything, and Slate kinda liked it for that.

"Sorry I, uh, took a detour." Slate opened their meeting by gesturing with both syrupy frappes. "Anyway, here's one of the drinks I was telling you about. They're supposed to be really good." Slate handed off the better-looking of the two frappes to his subordinate-and-friend.

"So um," he paused only long enough to make a quick look around. Then he seated himself, and scooted close enough to not be weird but still keep their conversation private. "How does it feel to be a Captain now? Are you enjoying it?" Slate took a long, thoughtful sip of his drink as he waited.

Alexa was pretty happy when she looked up from her bubble pop game to see Slate coming down one of the paths, yeah, but she was really happy when she saw the drinks he was holding, with cute little straws and everything. She lit up at the sight, but tried to direct her grin, big as ever, more towards the guy than the treats.

"Slate! Hi," she said, waving. She'd been all sprawled out while she waited, but as he came over, she pulled herself into a neat ball, knees tucked up to her chin, and she inspected the gift with wide eyes. This wasn't just a snack or anything. This was something you had to go out of the way for. Plus, it had whipped cream which was really all you could ask for.

"Woah, this is really nice," she said, reaching out to take her frappe. "Thanks." Then, she looked down at her drink. "Okay, you're adorable, but I'm still gonna drink you," she said, and then she did, taking a long sip out of the straw. Her eyes went big again as soon as she tasted it. It was really good! It was like, mint or cinnamon or something, but it was Christmas-y and nice and sweet enough for someone like Alexa who's blood had to be like, half high fructose corn syrup.

"Mmmmm~" she said, the reaction coming out more like an actual hum. Not too weird for Alexa, so she quickly moved on to the Negaverse stuff Slate wanted to talk about. "Captain life's been great. I've got real weapons, I can teleport, all kinds of stuff!" Without really thinking, she hummed again. It was a low, satisfied sound.

Slate slipped away while listening to his subordinate. He wondered, momentarily, what onlookers must've thought of them. Sure, he wasn't a teenager anymore, but he figured he still looked young. Alexa, though — she definitely looked like she belonged at the school behind them. And they couldn't really be confused for being related to each other. Would he get reported as a creeper? Maybe. But maybe they could brush that off as step-siblings or something. They were kinda like that anyway.

Back to reality. Real reality, where no one was looking at them funny because no one was actually around. "It tastes like sugary snow. I think." The whole thing tasted like the whipped cream on top with that typical mix of Christmas stuff, like nutmeg and cinnamon and peppermint (cinnamint?). "Wow," Slate exclaimed at a tone higher than he expected — and steadier than he expected. Maybe he was going through puberty again. "Not bad, huh?"

That didn't sound like puberty. That sounded like someone playing around with studio tuning software or whatever they used to make singers sound better than they really were. What happened to his voice?

Swallowing, Slate fidgeted with the sweating drink in his hands. He wiped one palm against his pants before as he listened to Alexa's cheer. (She seemed so happy and easy to please, Slate realized, like he couldn't do anything wrong. And that was, maybe, more relief than he deserved.) When he spoke next, the words came out in full song, complete with a laryngeal vibrato to bring up the end. "Have you gotten a sub —" Slate stopped at once, shocked, then tried again. "Subordinaaaate yet~ —" His face turned as red as his hair.

Slowly Slate covered his mouth with his hand. "Ummmm~ this is weeeeird~" He let the end ring out, then chuckled to himself. That, too, sounded impeccably in tune.

While Alexa was really liking this fun Christmas drink and was really, really loving the part where she had a commanding officer who actually, like, thought about her and did nice stuff for here, it was pretty hard to think about serious Negaverse stuff when faced with the sheer amount of deliciousness and whipped cream that was in the cup in front of her.

She took another long sip, and started to chew on the straw a little. It was a bad habit she couldn't quite shake. Hearing Slate's voice crack got her attention, though, and hearing him full on burst into song got her staring. She blinked. Then, she busted out into giggles. Slate wasn't exactly super serious, but he seemed kinda shy. Definitely not the type to randomly sing in public. Was that to cheer her up, too?

"You're a good singeeer~" she said. Sang, actually. She was fully singing too, without even trying to. It was so random that it just sent her giggling harder, although even her laughs had a little too much rhythm to them.

Once she settled down, she sat up straighter. "I did meet a guy,who needed some train-ing, and to get his life to-ge-ther, so I helped him out~" That came out sort of vaguely like Jingle Bells. At least if she sang fast there weren't as many of the weird trills. Thinking back to the lieutenant she'd trained, feeling a little lost the way she had, her smile dropped. "Ooooh~ I should have offereeed~"

Yeah, she couldn't stop singing. It was getting kind of uncomfortable, and, she realized, kinda loud. Luckily the area still looked pretty empty, but still. "This is kindaaa obvious~" she sang, as quietly as she could now.

Slate turned redder than his hair at the compliment. Part of that was because he knew it was wrong — he really couldn't hold a tune to save his life in private — and partly because well. It was a compliment. Those were usually kinda rare. Actually really rare, cuz he wasn't exactly great at his job. Either job, really. The coffee house or the Negaverse. But Alexa was, at least, nice enough to flatter him on the weirdly and constantly correct sounds coming from his mouth.

Well, come to think of it, maybe it really was singing. But he hadn't tried to sing, and maybe Alexa just started singing because Slate started spontaneously singing. But if he didn't want to spontaneously sing in the first place and he couldn't really stop and nothing really changed between now and five minutes ago except for taking a sip of his drink then did that mean the drink did this? But it was a drink. Didn't feel magical except for the way it tasted.

But it had to be the drink. Right? There wasn't some senshi snooping in the woods somewhere, using their magic to make them sing. Though that definitely seemed like a thing someone would do with a power like that. Slate's magic didn't really… Work like that. And Alexa had no magic, really.

So it had to be the drinks. Had to be.

"I dunnooooo what's wroooong with uuuus," Slate began embarrassingly, "but I thiiink it has somethiiing to do with our driiiinks~ Unless someone is staaaaalking us with a pretty sketchy magiiiic~" He finished in an unintended crescendo. At least if it was a person, they could assume they'd be back to normal in like, 30 seconds or something. Senshi magic never lasted very long.

"You don't. Have to rush. Into subordinates if you want. To get used. To being Captaaaain~" Slate pursed his lips after. Maybe grabbing his cell phone and typing everything out as a text message would be easier…

The drinks?

Alexa took another sip, squinting in concentration this time. It was really sweet and really yummy, but she'd figured out that much already. There was the cinnamon mint Christmas extravaganza flavor, which was different but still worked, and then yeah, there was something else underneath, something kinda subtle. Alexa wasn't exactly a food critic but she did know that this was totally something she would have called a potion a few years ago.

"Yeah, senshi aren't usuallllyy that subtle~" she said, trying to keep her voice down the best that she could, which wasn't that well since she was singing and she was also just Alexa."But maaagic frappes, huh? That's amaaaazing~" That was a particularly high note as she got a bit more excited thinking about the possibilities, which was a bit much and then she laughed again. Somehow she was sounding almost like an opera singer. She grinned down at the plastic cup in her lap.

"I wish, I could make people sing~" she sang. She had a feeling that it would be a lot funnier to be on the other side of things. "It's weeird, though. This, and I saw fairieees~" They'd come and gone without any explanation, too, which looking back sounded like it could maybe be something the space pirate type senshi could be behind? Unless it was something else. "Is something happening?"

"Fairieeees?" Slate cocked both brows near the meridian. Fairies like the kind of stuff he read about in, like, children's books? Did that mean there were more than just magical humans and cats out there? Jeez, the world of magic was expanding a whole lot faster than Slate could keep up with. Was there, maybe, some way he could kinda keep track of it? If there was, Alexa was the best place to start.

"I haven't seeeeen any faaaairieeees, but maybe you can maaake a repooort~" Wow, singing was making him take longer to get out what he wanted to say. Kind of a downside, but the whole thing was still super new to him. Was this how opera singers felt when they got into their parts?

Wait. Maybe stay on task a little.

Slate sat his drink between his knees, his thumbs still rolling it around in his grip. His mouth pursed as he considered any other weird stuff that might be going on. Come to think of it, this wasn't the first time fairies showed up. Nor was it the first time seasonal drinks had a weird effect, actually. "Well, ummmm~ This isn't the first time it happened~ Maaaybe not fairies, but the whole~ magic weirdness~" Wow, yeah, singing really slowed him down. "So like, stuff like this happened last yeeear, and the year before thaaat, and Halloween tooo, and just… It's suuuper odd~ I just try not to thiiink about it because I can't figuuuure it ouuuut~" But maybe Alexa could? She was pretty smart. Plus, she put her mind to something when she was assigned to it, and that got her one promotion already.

"What do you think of inveeestigating it?"

Yeah, talking was kinda slow like this, way slower than Alexa's normal attention span to be completely honest, but it was novel enough that right now she was more than willing to stare at Slate with a grin on her face while he did his little sing-song speech like he was straight out of a musical. It didn't hurt that he was saying that the fairies and the magic drinks and stuff were new. Like, at least new enough that nobody really knew what was going on with them.

"Oooooooh~ So it's a mys-ter-y!" She hummed a few notes from the Scooby Doo theme of her own free will for emphasis, then giving a little contented sigh. With her upgrade and branch transfer and everything, doing investigations on senshi was quickly becoming her full time Negaverse job, which was great and all, but it was still great to have backup mysteries for if she got bored. Backup mysteries about fun goofy magic like this got bonus points.

"Soooo yeah, I can investigaaaate~" she sang. "Can we start to how to make this stoooop?" A this point she was still having a good time, but she figured she had about five more minutes before the being impressed wore off and she started getting really annoyed really fast.

Slate sighed in perfect pitch as he looked down at his drink. For as good as they tasted, were the frosty frappes really worth the trouble? But that kinda assumed they had something to do with his voice turning all weird, and not some random senshi trying guerrilla tactics on potential Negaversers. Or that one of their fellow corrupted senshi wasn't doing something weird with their new magical powers. So maybe it was a little assumptive to blame this whole inconvenience on the drinks, but… What other lead did they have? Sure, it coulda just been some random occurrence, but their voices happened not too long after they started drinking.

That'd be the hypothesis for now, he guessed. Looking over at Alexa, Slate gave a lopsided shrug. "Stop drinking them maybeeee?" Then, hopefully, the autotune would wear out and they could speak like normal people again. Or they could buy different drinks to wash their mouths out, but what if those had weird effects too? Or they find out the drinks have nothing to do with it? At the rate he was going, Slate basically promised himself a million questions with no sign of a solution anywhere.

And he kinda brought the whole thing on, didn't he? Again, kinda assumes the autotune was the drinks' fault, but he was the one bringing the drinks. So, by extension, he was the one bringing the autotune. On account of Alexa getting a promotion. Some treat that was, when they were both already getting tired of it.

Which means he messed up pretty bad, especially as a superior officer. As Slate stared into his drink, his face reddened and his expression grew more furrowed. Did he always have to screw this stuff up? No wonder leading was better left to people like Schörl and Xenotime and his brother. No wonder most people were mean to him.

Big wonder why Alexa wasn't already onto bigger, better officers with more going for them. Maybe she just felt bad for Ochre. He didn't know. He just knew, looking down into that sugary abomination, that he felt pretty small right now. Autotuned small, even. So maybe, just maybe, he should excuse himself before doing more damage.

"Well, ummmm, it was good seeing you agaaaaain, and congraaatulaaations on your upgraaaade, so I'l see you around soon~ I bet you have a lot to dooo~"

Alexa looked over at Slate, then back to the drink, then back to Slate, then back to the drink, her eyebrows squishing together and her her smile edging towards a pout. He was probably right. She knew enough about fairy tales and stuff to know that if she didn't finish the "potion," there was a lot better chance that she'd go back to normal at midnight.

Although there was also the thing where just one bite of something was enough to screw you over forever, especially when actual fairies were involved. Y'know, like right now. And the drink was so pretty and so good and knowing that drinking more wasn't a good idea just made her want to gulp the rest down.

Nope. Her fingers tapped faster and faster against the plastic, but the cup stayed in her lap. She had a little self control. "Yeeeeahhh~" she said, the sigh coming through even with the music and everything.

She looked back to Slate and stayed there finally. The frown stayed, too, 'cause she guessed by his silence that he didn't really know, either. She didn't like him all quiet and overwhelmed, and it wasn't because of the commanding officer thing. Drinks and check-ins were so much better than anything she could've asked for. She just wanted to help him, but there weren't like, people to interview right now, just really weird mystery curses.

She nodded when he started to send her off, and she grinned again, even though it took a little more effort than sometimes. "This was suuuuper duuuper sweet, Slaaate. I'll see yaaaaaaa~"

She waved as she stood up, and she dumped the drink in the nearest trash can as she headed out.
