Quote:
Sprigs of mistletoe dangle from various spots around the carnival and it becomes abundantly clear that most people are taking advantage of the fun holiday tradition, be it a cute peck on the cheek or an opportunity for some gross PDA. You happen to notice a crush or loved one standing under one of the sprigs and on a whim, you decide to adhere to timeless tradition and give them a kiss (even if it means mustering up your courage and getting over your shyness to make it happen). When you open your eyes, you soon realize... that wasn't your crush/loved one at all, but a total stranger! Oh no!

Lia, once again, ran into another sprig of mistletoe. She could feel it getting caught in her wild mane she called hair. The woman let out a muffled sound as she reached up, pulling the plant out. She waved it in front of her companion for the evening, one sociopath dentist by day and lieutenant clown by night, Dimitri. "Ah-nother one!" She proclaimed "This is the fourth one since we got here! Being this tall is cool and all, but you better appreciate your six-one, Chuckles." Lia paused for a moment.

"Or not only that, but maybe they just went overboard with all the mistletoe."

When this carnival had sprung up, she'd been interested in checking it out. Reaching out to the team to see who wanted to go, Dimitri, as usual, had been one of the first to reply, so here they were. "Say, you feel at home yet?" She teased, pulling the mistletoe away from him. "Being at a carnival and all."

Dimitri watched impassively as Lia fished another sprig of mistletoe from her hair, his gaze following the sprig as she waved it around in front of him. He hardly blinked. "Glad you're keeping a running tally, " he remarked dryly, although with the vaguest semblance of a smile that betrayed he might be bemused by the whole thing.

Maybe because, "You know, isn't it sort of ironic that we kiss under something poisonous. We'd probably survive, but if a kid ate it, they might die." Then, he tilted his head to a side as he added, conversationally, "Granted, it's used for some cancer treatments, so who knows."

Then Dimitri just shrugged it off and kind of laughed. "Carnivals usually don't have clowns, do they? - just cheap rides, dead fish, cotton candy?"

"I normally wouldn't care." Lia replied, not at all put off by the man's dry remarks. Despite the fact he lacked many of the normal social cues and replies, she had a good time hanging out with him. "But when it goes past three---what's where the line is drawn." She emphasized her words with drawing a line with her hand in a swift motion, and then tossed aside the sprig of mistletoe.

"Ha!" She barked a bit of a laugh at this tidbit. "Well, that's why they're usually decoration, and not food, yeah? It's also really not that surprising that we take something dangerous and make it friendly---Disney movies, am I right? You know all the original Brother's Grimm fairy tales were gruesome." The woman stuffed her hands into her winter coat as they walked through the carnival, taking note of various food and drink stands she might be interested in trying.

"They usually do---or, you know, maybe I'm thinking of circuses." She grinned down at him. "Same thing though. Maybe if this one is lacking one, then the demand can be filled, yeah?"

Dry and admittedly a little mechanical when it came to social functions he may be, but humorless, he certainly wasn’t. He snorted a low laugh, punctuated by, “There’s still a leaf of it stuck there. Over there, “ and he gestured vaguely to it in the least helpful way possible.

Her insight into the Grimm stories, though, that was something he could get behind. Something sparked in his dark eyes, and his grin drew wider. “That they were. Cinderella was one of my personal favorites. - amazing how soft we get over the course of time, isn’t it?”

As if his mood wasn’t good enough, at the mention that this place might benefit from, “God, imagine what the clown could do here, “ and he said that with a note of excitement that the carnival itself would have evoked out of any normal person.

Then, abruptly, there was a brush of something against his cheek - another damn sprig of mistletoe - followed quickly by another brush of something, a foreign pair of lips against his cheek. He instinctively swatted like he was trying to shoo away a bug with about as much annoyance, but the girl was already gone, back and giggling with her friends.

"There's a wha---" It clicked, and Lia's hands came out of her coat to just run trough her mane of hair. "Aw, man---Wait, you're here, Di, get it." She grinned at the man, and then bent her knees a bit to put the top of her head more at his level for him to grab the leaf.

"Of course you'd pick Cinderella." She replied. "I take it you like when the step-sisters get their eyes pecked out, huh? I think they could have gotten a bit more creative with that one, though. The tale was all about slippers and feet. The step-sisters should have had their feet chopped off or---you know---that Chinese foot binding thing that's incredibly painful? That would have been far more poetic justice."

A brow quirked on her tanned face though, as their little duo was briefly joined by a stranger. She watched as a girl came up, only to peck the man on the cheek. His reaction though---

Lia boomed a laugh, startling a few of the nearby carnival goers.

"That look on your face---your hand---" She dissolved into another laugh. It quickly died down though, leaving a grin in its place, but her eyes were still dancing with amusement as she looked at him. "Bet they wouldn't kiss the clown." She said, lowly, still incredibly amused.

Dimitri just kind of laughed as he reached up and plucked at the leaf, trying to work it out so he didn't tug her unruly hair at all in the process. It was more or less successful: he was a dentist, after all. He knew how to use his hands to minimize pain as well as how to inflict it.

"I did enjoy the poetic justice of them chopping their own heels off, " he remarked lightly, but had to admit with a wry smile, "That would have been a good twist too, though. Very ironic. Longer lasting." He did appreciate not only that the negaverse gave him an outlet, but also that he had a chance to meet people who thought as... creatively as he did, he supposed was the most kosher way to put it. He couldn't really imagine having a conversation like this with anyone else. "How about you? - which story would you choose?"

Then there was the whole kiss incident, and he looked uttered ambivalent on the whole thing - until the clown remark came up, and that was when he finally snickered. "You're right. God, could you imagine her face if the clown came barreling up to her like that?" THAT had him in stitches.

"Thank ya kindly." Lia replied when she felt the leaf be plucked. "That dentist touch~" The woman straightened, mussing up her already unruly hair before letting it fall. "Yeah, yeah---still really half-assed though." Lia replied with a small grin. "Hmmm..." She tapped fingers against her chin thoughtfully. "It's The Griffin. It's the closest story I could find with a lion on it."

She laughed once more. "Well...maybe later we should come back, yeah?" She winked. "I'd paid money to see any anyone wants to get with the clown under some mistletoe." She cackled, and then pointed over to a stand. "Hey, wanna get some hot buttered rum? I saw a sign for it a while back and it sounds like it'd hit the spot mighty nice."

"Glad to know my years of dental school are being put to good use, " he retorted without batting an eye, and then he cracked a grin. "Ah, yes, The Griffin. The ultimate tale of being in the right place at the right time, isn't it?" Something they could relate to, he supposed - although, call his priorities skewed, but he was happier getting the power of the negaverse behind him than winning a princess and a kingdom. "Or at least being candid about what you want. Heh."

Honestly, the way Dimitri lit up when she suggested coming back - he even flashed his pearly whites. "Please. - and sure." He whipped out his wallet like it was nothing. Honestly, it was. Easy not to care about money when it wasn't an issue.

The woman nodded her head. "Yeah, right? Pretty relevant to us too, eh?" She said, mirroring his thoughts out loud. "Yeah, it's the closest to a lion, but I do just like the idea of things just happening due to chance and location as well. It's interesting."

Once again, she laughed at his reaction. "You got it---" And for this part, she lowered her voice. "Seems like a good place to collect quota too, anyways." So really it was a win-win. Amusement at seeing people under mistletoe with the clown, and doing their work. "Aww, Di, you're so good to me." She said when he pulled out his wallet. It wasn't mooching when someone offered first without you saying something about it.

Besides, she did pay for things sometimes too---Dimitri just happened to pay for things more.

She made her way to the stand with the man, ordering two cups of the stuff, and picked them up when they were handed to them. When she turned, she made eye contact with a guy who was making a bee line for her, only for him to stop in his tracks like a deer in the headlights, and then promptly turn on his heel and flee.

Lia quirked a brow, and then looked around. "Oh." She found another sprig of mistletoe, and neatly side stepped around it. She supposed the height probably scared the dude off. It did a lot of people.

"Man---I'm starting to think they really went overboard with the mistletoe placement." She said, taking a swig of the cup that would now be her's, and holding out the other one for her companion. "Thanks, by the way!" She grinned. "This stuff is great---and it hits the spot for sure."

Being in sync on a team boded well, didn't it? "It is. You're right, " and Dimitri wasn't the type to say such a thing unless he meant it. Sugar coating was not his strong suit. "It is interesting."

If he did actually care about money, it probably wouldn't have made a difference; he liked Lia, in his own... special way. She was easy to talk to, relate-able, and he didn't generally wish her any harm. Not to mention she was as much into this negaverse thing as he was, like she just got it.

What he didn't get, though, was when it was all said and done, Lia almost got put through the same mistletoe bullshit he did - except for one key difference. "How come you got out of it? That's hardly fair." Why did he have to deal with more of the annoying kissing garbage than she did?

Lia grinned broadly at the man. "Because I'm pretty intimidating without make up." She flexed for him, briefly, even though she was holding both the cups. "Plus---it's pretty hard for most people to reach these cheeks, even standing on their tip toes." She laughed, then, and jerked her head to indicate the direction they should take now.

"Let's go hit the city for a bit, yeah? We'll come back later." For a real good and fun time. As she started to move, Lia wiggled the cup at him for the man to take.

Dimitri kind of stared at her as he claimed his cup of the stuff from her grasp, his brow furrowing in a way that - well, it could've honestly been a million reasons. Annoyance. Thought. The way the wind was blowing cold against their faces.

Out of the blue, he reached out and grabbed a sprig of the stupid green stuff, then tilted his head up and pressed his lips against her cheek - a brief little thing that had some degree of force behind it, intentional and deliberate. Then, he snorted, tossing the plant over his shoulder with a deliberate roll of his eyes. "That wasn't so hard."

Being tall didn't make her exempt from suffering the same annoying s**t he did, and he honestly didn't get how she should be considered any more intimidating than he was. He kept walking with another snort of derision. "People are so weak; it's pathetic."

Lia opened her mouth to say something, but the words died immediately at the press of lips against her cheek. Orange eyes went wide briefly, and she missed a step. Luckily, she caught herself, and picked up her pace just a bit to match the man's who had stunned her. A hand slapped against her cheek as she stared at the dentist, baffled.

"Well aren't you just full of surprises."

After a moment, she couldn't help but laugh. She shook her head, hair flying this way and that. The man was just full of surprises, indeed.
