Quote: Among the nearby winter wonderland festivities sits a natural-made skating rink, constantly covered in men and women of all ages and all range of skill - some skate like pros and some are clearly new to the sport. As you make your way onto the ice, you seem to be doing fine… that is, until a wayward snowball comes hurtling in your direction -- look out! Hands find their way around you… have you been saved by a friend, or perhaps a good Samaritan that was skating by? Do they manage to keep you standing or did you manage to take them down with you? One thing's for certain...not even the most professional of ice skaters could have prepared themselves for that! It had been years since Jack had been on a pair of skates, ice or otherwise. Enough years that she couldn't actually remember how many, but the last time had probably been sometime before she'd started up at DCU, so at least a few. So she wasn't the steadiest on her pretty white skates as she eased slowly out onto the ice, and as she wobbled a little she was glad she'd decided not to bring her camera with her, even if only a moment or so ago she'd just been second guessing herself. The festival was beautiful. All the lights strung up in and around the ice made it sparkle like something out of this world, and every direction they turned there was something new to see. She'd have to come back again another time, opt out of the skating so she could bring her camera to get some shots of the sculptures and the maze. Assuming the chilly weather held on. Brendan's call had been unexpected but not in anyway unwelcome, and she'd gladly accepted his invitation to accompany him to the carnival. She'd already been excited to check it out, and it'd been a while since she'd seen the young man, and really, the few texts they'd managed to exchange at the mansion before things had turned sideways didn't really count. But he was sweet, and he was handsome, and he knew about her second life as sailor Phoebe, so she was happy to have more opportunities to spend time with him. Balance regained, she glanced back over her shoulder to see if Brendan had made it out on the ice as well, grinning. "Do you skate often?" The snowball came out of nowhere, exploding against Jack's left shoulder, and what grip she'd managed to claim on balance was lost, skates starting to slide out from beneath her as she started to topple backwards with an indignant, startled squeak.

It was good to get back in the rhythm again. Months after he finished physical therapy, Brendan wouldn’t have dreamed that he would have gotten most everything he had lost during his coma back so quickly. Yet here he was, with a new apartment and roommate, his old job back at DC Metalworks, and he wasn’t struggling quite as much as he used to with fine dexterity motions. Perhaps it was too much to try ice skating with that confidence, but the beach was too cold now, and Brendan wasn’t someone who could stay away from any body of water for long. And besides, it was the holidays! Why on earth would he want to be alone?
(Trick question: he was never alone for very long.)
“Nah,” he replied, slow and lazily following behind. Balance was a tricky thing, though at least as a page his core was pretty solid. “I’m more of a surfer, remember?” Scratching the ice up didn’t quite hit the same spot. Maybe if he moved faster...
Brendan just started to pick up the pace when the snowball came out of nowhere. “Uh—“ Before they collided, he reached out to grab Jack’s arm, but instead he grabbed the back of her jacket, and before he knew it he was hoisting her up and against him, a small shredding shriek coming from his skates as he tried to brake. “Hold on,” Brendan said with a small laugh, “I think I got you.”
One of his legs twitched to and fro to retain balance, but other than keeping a wide, awkward stance that made his pants ride up his a**, they were safe.
“Where’d that even come from?” [/color

Having fallen on the ice a time or two before now the moment Jack felt her balance failing she'd braced for a painful impact, but instead found herself being caught around the waist by strong arms that didn't exactly yank her back up onto her feet, but they did keep her from hitting the ice so she was very grateful nonetheless. A bruised tailbone would have really put a damper on the evening at the very least, if not the whole of the holidays. "Good reflexes," she chuckled back as she heard his skates scratching harshly against the ice beneath them. They were upright, but not quite steady yet. Moving carefully, because she really didn't want to send the both of them down in a painful heap, Jack shifted around until she could catch hold of Brendan's arm and get her feet beneath her again. "Thanks." She was a little flushed. Easily explainable with the cold weather, but more likely the embarrassment of almost falling, or the being tugged back against a strong chest by a really good looking guy. Still holding onto his arm, she glanced back in the direction she thought the snowball had come with, but after a moment had to shrug, before turning back to him. "I'm not sure. I think it came from over there, but..." There where a lot of people over there, and it would have been impossible to pinpoint which, if any of them, had thrown it.

"Eh, y'know, saving people's my job and all, but I don't mind some pro bono work~"
With just a bit of weight shifting and some luck, neither fell over again. Brendan grinned with his usual ease, regardless of what he thought about her blush. "Probably just a few kids getting rowdy," he said as he glanced around. Granted, there was a ton of people, and he didn't exactly see a commotion going on beyond the natural skating rink, but what else could it have been? Aliens tossing evil snowballs to make the poor civvies bust their tails?
...Okay, he didn't rule it out, but that sounded stupid. Even for Destiny City mook standards.
"I'll keep an eye out just for you, though," he added with a wink, slowly skating past and tugging Jack with him by her grip. "Page duties and all."

"Isn't it my job, too?" She asked with a chuckle, brushing the snow off the shoulder of her coat with her free hand. As a senshi protecting people was absolutely within the realm of her magical duties, but she wasn't...that good at it. As became evident back in November when she'd had to watch that corrupted senshi eat- Jack shook her head, forcing the memory away and with it the haunted look that'd slipped into her eyes. She didn't want to think about it more than it already occupied her thoughts. Especially not now, when she was supposed to be having fun. She slid along beside him as he pulled on her hand, feet making short, careful movements until she thought she had the balance of it and could skate along more smoothly. The wink would earn him a warm smile, and a hum of amusement. "My hero." It was beginning to look like a theme, in fact. Him saving her.

”Well, yeah.” But ladies always needed to be supported, in his mind. Or maybe he was responding to being her hero. Probably both.
Once it looked like Jack was balanced again, he let her hand go, checked ahead, and twisted so he casually skated backwards. “So, what’s been up recently?” Brendan asked, hands behind his back in imitation of a professional ice skater. He wasn’t, by any means, and he was getting slower by doing the maneuver, but he had to self-confidence to sell it. “Got any holiday plans?”

Her fingers slid out of his hand with some reluctance, but she was smiling up at him as he turned, looking suitably impressed by the tricky maneuver. On roller skates, or blades, she could do that, but ice skates didn't feel half that steady to her, at least not yet, so she wasn't going to risk it. But she certainly didn't mind watching him as he swayed back and forth. Her smile faltered a little at the question, and she ducked her head, a hand coming up to brush a few curls back behind her ear as she shoved away the sudden and invasive memory of the last fight she'd been in against the acid green corrupt. "Um." She'd talked to a few people about that already, but wasn't sure she wanted to recount it again just yet. Maybe maybe. So she'd stick to the easier answers. The less heavy ones. The nicer ones. "I, uh. I joined up with a team." A quick glance around showed there was no one within easy earshot. "A while ago I got attacked by this giant spider youma, and this senshi helped me, he got hurt doing it, so we had to call his friend. It's her team, and that other senshi is on it too." Like a little family. "No plans though, for the holidays. I mean none yet other than family things." She shrugged, then smiled back at him. "How about you? Any thing interesting been happening?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Brendan made a stopping motion with his hands, which may or may not have contributed to him slowing to a stop as well. Certainly not the imbalance he had felt which could have toppled him for going backwards that long without looking around. "Hold up. You guys have teams?"
This was way more interesting than anything he had to say about his holidays, which were always something of a mixed bag on a normal year but were definitely going to be sour this time. And Brendan didn't like to think about anything remotely Not Good To Him right now.
"Like, I know we're on the same side and stuff, but I figured we were all like basically solo operators that can team up for some gigs and stuff. Is it like Power Rangers?"

Jack blinked up at him as he made a 'hold up' motion with her hands, as he slowed she did as well, coming to a an unsteady stop a few inches past him. She made a very careful turn to look back at him. "Yeah, I mean it makes sense, you know? Having people that'll have your back, or that'll be there when you need." Like Fiona had been, and Khaleel, after her run in with that corrupt. "Knights do it too," she continued on, reaching back for his arm so she could get them both moving again. "And folks team up cross faction. Our leader, her boyfriend is a knight, and I've been on patrols and stuff with him too." Hand nestled in the crook of his elbow, she offered him a gentle smile. "You don't have to fly solo all the time." If he had no one else, he at least had her. "You can always call me if you want or need company or help."

"Huh..." He let Jack take his arm and moved automatically to skate in sync with her, frowning in thought. "I guess I never thought about that." Knights--Arthurian knights, that is--were known to be as good in solo combat as they were when pulled under someone else's leadership. Brendan had been leaning into that solo career since it had been easier than trying to explain away his two year absence.
Though really, when he thought about it, who was going to notice on this side? He hadn't exactly made a name for himself before the accident. Maybe that was why he was so quick to throw himself into obvious danger without thinking it'd be best to go in with a partner. Well, that and that was just how Brendan operated.
"That a business offer?" he asked, returning to his flirtatious ways.

That smile was dangerous, but she smiled back anyways, blessedly managing to keep her feet under her and skates under control. "I suppose it could be." It was nice, having someone show any sort of interest. Jack didn't know if there was any intent behind it or if that was just the way he was, but she found him charming, funny. "Doesn't just have to be for," she paused, unsure what word to use, but finally settled. "Work. I wouldn't mind doing this more often, too. I mean, not specifically the skating, but. You know what I mean." It was about as forward as she ever got, and really, just asking to hang out a little more wasn't exactly forward.

He was kind and didn’t say something suggestive. He wasn’t so kind that he avoided something worse, though. “Hanging out?” Brendan suggested brightly, pulling her closer by their entwines arms. “I wouldn’t mind either, Ms. Photographer. Maybe you could get my good side sometime.” He gently bumped her with his hip. Maybe that was the good side? “In return, maybe I’ll let you take a ride on my motorcycle~”

She chuckled as he pulled her in closer to bump her side with his hip, and was very pleased with herself when it resulted in no wobbling or lapses in balance. Maybe she was getting the hang of this? Fingers crossed. "Yeah, something like that." Jack grinned up at him. "'And I'm pretty sure every side is your good side." She gave a little shrug, narrow shoulders rolling. "At least I haven't seen one." If he wanted his picture taken he was talking to the right girl. Bright eyes flicked down to her feet as her skate caught just slightly on a weird bit of ice, but again she managed to stay upright thanks to the firm grip she had on his arm. "I've never been on a motorcycle before."
