Quote: Getting free Hot Chocolate from that new food truck seemed like a great idea at the time, and the blue sprinkles on top was just the cutest touch!
A few hours later though, you just can’t seem to get warm. Nothing helps. Not a bath, not wrapping in ten blankets and not sitting in front of an open fire. Your skin begins to turn a pale blue starting at your fingertips, and if you were warm enough to remove your socks, you’d see your toes were doing the same thing. As the minutes wear on you begin to sneeze small bunches of snowflakes as the icy blue continues to take over your skin. Perhaps it is a good idea to just go to bed and pile on the blankets.
The cold lasts for about six hours, and the blueish tint fades after you again get warm. Maybe you should think twice the next time someone offers you something for free…

"You know, I very much enjoy Christmas."
A gust of cold wind blew past Penrose as he spoke, and he ducked his chin into the thick, knitted scarf around his neck, the bitter chill making even his ears feel frosty. Auburn hair fell in a curly waterfall down his back, a little tangled from having showered and then gone out too soon, some of the ends slightly stiff with snow.
He was a vain creature at heart, really. Pen slid his arm through Nevada's, linking them together as they made their way down the street, his shoulder pressing warmly against hers. "It's a marvelous time of year. Less marvelous is the fact that I'm freezing my nibs off out here, but otherwise, it's quite lovely."
"Hungry? Do you want food?"

Nevada could already tell where this might be going. When his arm wrapped in hers, Nevada huddled closer to the taller man and laughed. She wasn't as bothered by the cold as he seemed to be. Also her hair was wrapped neatly into a twin tail braid, and covered with a hat. Her friend, she knew, was freshly clean.
Poor man.
"I think you're nibs will be find Pen." She giggled though, "You haven't used them in a bit though, so perhaps this will be a good reason for you to get out and get them warm?" She joked before lifting her nose and smelling the air. There was a certain enjoyment that snow brought with it. Winter always smelled fresh.
It cleaned the air out and let other smells waft down, and she could smell cinnamon and chocolate and other wonderful christmas scents.
"Starving." Her stomach growled, "We should get something hot though...." Normally she preferred chilled food, but she didn't want to eat ice cream on a day like this. "We can get it and head back to my home. I have a pile of blankets and pillows with our name on it." Her free hand came up to mess with a part of his bangs. "and properly dry your hair too."

"I'll have you know, that my nibs were last used..." Pen trailed off contemplatively. "No, no, you're quite right, not for a bit. I'm sure that should be rectified at some point, so if you find anyone of interest that I might, shall we say, put them to use again, let me know."
He gave her a playful wink, a grin flickering across his face, and leaned his weight more fully against her deliberately, almost knocking her over. Pen's height and his build meant that he could use it to his advantage a lot, but Nevada was no shrinking violet. Trapeze and silks took a great deal of both upper and lower body strength, and he was pretty sure that she could probably give him a good decking at some point if he was being too cheeky.
"Hot cocoa out here, then food back at your place," Penrose agreed with a nod, shivering a little. He smiled down at Nevada as she fussed with his frozen bangs. "Yes, yes, I know luv, I should have taken the cold into account and now my hair is frozen up. It's my own fault, really."
He sighed theatrically. "Oh look, up ahead, it's one of those food...truck things. Shall we get a drink?"

"I thought so." Nevada snorted at him, "You could go out and about, and find yourself a lovely little nib lover eh?" She reached over and flicked at the spot where some nibs would be frozen. "Sadly, you have to suffice with me."
When his weight started to push against her, she made a small distress sound. And then she was supporting the taller man, using her upper arms to keep him in place. "P e n r o s e." She made a sound at him, because she knew he was being and butt.
She almost gave him a little nudge back, but instead decided to step right out of the way so he fell into snow. He was already cold, a little snow wouldn't hurt him either, would it?
She sniffed the air and then smiled, "It smells like hot chocolate." That sounded wonderful to take home.

Penrose gave a theatrical sigh. "If only there was someone worthy of my nibs," he said, in a deliberately melancholy voice, swaying from side to side and putting more of his full weight on Nevada. She was pushing back against him, nudging an elbow into his side, and Penrose felt himself toppling sideways into a snowbank.
He gave a squawk of protest, scrambled back up, and shook flakes from his hair.
"My dearest Nevada," he said, with a meaningful look in her direction. "I was just discussing the fact that so far there is no one worthy of my nibs and here you are pushing me into a bloody pile of snow, you sod."
But it was said with affection, even as Penrose linked his arm through Nevada's again, steering them towards the food truck. "I shouldn't treat you if you're going to toss me around, but since it's you, I'll decide to forgive you and we'll get some hot cocoa and go home, shall we?"

"I highly doubt anyone is worthy of your nibs." She teased right back, as she knew that Penrose was more particular about his lovers then she was. Though her attention had been pretty focused on a certain Solomon, she hadn't seen the man since their diner date months ago.
When he hit snow, she giggled and took his hand in hers instead, lacing fingers when he came back to her side. "Perhaps your nibs are worthy of some of the snow, eh?" She giggled again and then laughed fully.
"But you're going to treat me, because you love me and I love you." She reached up on tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek. "It's just a little friendly tit for tat, you know? For all the times you dropped me." She agreed happily, ordering said hot chocolate and blowing on the steam that escaped from the cup.
"Thank goodness. Hot chocolate just has a way of warming the soul." She was so excited. "I propose blankets and a christmas movie. What should we watch?"

He tilted his head to rest his temple against the top of Nevada's briefly. "Yes, well," said Penrose dryly. "I'm sure there isn't anyone within quite a ways that can be worthy of you, either, so that just leaves, tragically, ourselves. This is why we should have gotten married," he added sagely, with a nod of his head, as though he was imparting great wisdom.
Truth be told, he just didn't see Nevada in that light, just as she didn't see him. She was beautiful, and wonderful, and lovely, but the two of them were nothing more than the most platonic of soul mates, and Penrose was quite content with that, even if sometimes he wondered about his apparently lackluster love life on the sidelines.
"Perhaps one day I'll find someone," he said now, in a deliberately dramatic tone, because he didn't want to bring down the mood with his negativity. "As for now, yes, I suppose I will pay for your hot cocoa, just because I'm that nice."
He turned and kissed her cheek in return. "And because you are quite right, I do indeed love you."
The cocoa was warm and reassuring against his fingers and palms, heat spreading outwards, making him feel much more at ease than he had been. Penrose passed over a few bills, then fell into step beside his best friend once more, holding his cocoa up to his face to inhale the deeply wonderful scent of the drink.
"What about something holiday-ish?" he suggested. "The Grinch? The Santa Claus? Love, Actually?"

"You know why we couldn't...." She dramatically made a sound, "Penrose, from my opposing company. Nevada, the star of the current company. Tragically kept apart for years until they came together for a show." She waved a hand, after her lie spun from the typical romeo and juliet story. Truth be told, Penrose was her amazing best friend.
And that's all she had ever needed or wanted from the man.
But she did worry about the lackluster love life of her platonic soulmate.
"Oh goodie. I love treats." She was switching gears now, leaning into his kiss on the cheek. Ahh affection, it fueled her soul. "Thank goodness. What would I do without your love..." She would've serenaded him, but she was sipping her drink.
"Well since we were talking about love...." She hinted at the movie choice.
Soon enough they were at home, and she was piling blankets in the living room with some popcorn and pizza. It was okay for some carbs....Just some though.
"Hold on, it seems chilly in here so I am gonna turn the heat up." Normally she kept it at a comfortable 65 but....she squinted at the thermostat before moving it up to 70. Maybe it was just drafty today.
