These two characters belong to my friend Jae. They are Candy Fauns, which are a "closed species" that someone created. I really liked their designs and decided to do a drawing of them. I did the preliminary sketch back in May and have been wanting to color it for months. I finished laying out the flat colors this last week, but have been having trouble trying to figure out how to best go about shading them. Also, I would like to add elements to the background, make it look a little more "fantastic."

Ideally, I would like to have the shading done by next Sunday as that's my set deadline, but the way it's going, I'm not exactly sure I'll meet it.

I wanted to have this drawing completed by Jae's birthday (yesterday) so I decided to skip out on detailed shading. I liked how someone utilized little bits of shading in the facial area of the characters in this picture, though, so I decided to try it in my picture. I like the result so I may keep this technique in mind the next time I become short on time again.

Also, because of time constraints, this allowed me to experiment a little bit with some new brushes. The "grass" was made using this brush, and for the flowers, I used this brush. I also added a bit of glow to the background and the ground portion to make the characters stand out more and to add a bit more of a fantasy element to the picture.

Regarding my feelings, I'm a tad disappointed I wasn't able to shade it or add more to the background like I was originally planning, but the good news is, Jae really liked it so I guess that's all that really matters in the end. In all honesty, though, I just wanted to see this picture done. The next project I have in mind is going to take a little more than a month to complete, and it is also gift art.
