Notes for playing

Primary tension: Justice and Protectiveness. August’s entire life is built around justice, due process, law, perseverance and diligent deliberation. But he is also fiercely protective of people, sometimes not for the most rational reasons, and if they need him, everything goes, justice be damned. As he understands this tension in himself he becomes more empathetic to others.
Marked by pressure to protect his friends, to live up to his mothers’ expectations, to carry on his father’s legacy in hospitality.

Character development will focuses on understanding people, writing, mentoring, and being less afraid. He'll manipulate people around him subtly, but only because he thinks it's better for them.
Broken by hurting more than he’s able to help his family or very close friends.

~Spirit of the law-- Does it break any rules?! Does it break any ethical rules?! Think of this! What good does it do?
~Protective-- Does it hurt Rhea? Jun or Millie? Anyone else in his family? Their position or social perception?

xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

PROTECTIVE August is fiercely protective of people--particularly his family and friends. While he acknowledges that people make their own dreams and decisions, he is always worried about their safety and stability and tries to encourage them towards a safe and stable path.

CIVIL Never appear upset. August has been directed from birth basically to never appear anything but professional and polite to “outsiders”, to appear perfectly civil regardless of his actual thoughts. He may sometimes seem too unfettered and stoic, . Around his family he’s a little more expressive about irritation and opinions. His experiences at school have both strengthened this ability to keep perfectly civil and taught him to relax more around his friends..

DETERMINED Doggedly persistent, August has been taught that if he’s not getting what he wants, it only means he hasn't worked hard enough. There is always something more he can be doing to improve, and August is determined to be outstanding in everything he does. Respecting other perspectives and decisions doesn't mean liking them, and he is not shy about pushing forward his own opinions and rationales forward.

BITTER Despite his achievements at school and in the International Confederation of Wizards, August remains worried that he is just one failure away from ruin, and his occasional rebellious or reckless decision will end up ruining everything he works hard to build normally. While he trusts and is grateful for Rhea and his friends, August recognizes that he can be quite dense sometimes and completely miss things. He prepares assiduously, but sometimes is still the last person to realize how he feels about something. He takes it as a matter of course that, without guidance, people will fail to use the systems in place to their advantage-- and a growing fear that systems will fail people.

RESPONSIBLE Authority and rules exist for a reason and August respects and understands that authority, even if he doesn't always agree. He takes his assignments and commitments very seriously and tries to always be thorough, prepared, and punctual. Inspired in part by great mentors in his own life, August has taken a shine to mentoring and tutoring other students himself and feels a responsibility towards these mentees as well. As a new professor, he tries to be there for each and every student, even if he knows that is not always feasible.

STUDIOUS August keeps up a strict schedule of studying, supplementary reading and practicing. Even his extracurriculars he treated like classes, studying up on Quidditch like it was a class for announcing, or referencing textbooks to help write Daily Dragon articles. He delves into historical contexts eagerly, and masters theory as part of practicing more practical magic. August is most comfortable talking academics--particularly in Law, History, and Language. He sees great value in teaching, tutoring, and mentoring others, which las led naturally into his new position as a professor.

HOBBIES
■ Reading-- particularly historical and legal texts.
■ Writing stories-- primarily mystery and horror.
■ Ballroom dancing with Rhea

LIKES
■ Calligraphy
■ Spectacular landscapes, especially at sunrise or sunset
■ Foreign languages-- learning them, practicing them, having an opportunity to communicate with someone in their native tongue.
■ Tea
■ Peanut butter s'mores

DISLIKES
■ Dishonesty or disingenuity--If people were straightforward, honest, and genuine, he believes, then everyone could better do what they're good at and the world would be better. Unfortunately the world isn't like that.
■ Writer’s block--Writer’s block doesn’t exist, August insists, so whenever he gets it, he gets upset at every other possible circumstance that is preventing writing--time, studies, a completely inadequate quill, his own talent--anything.
■ Bodies of water
■ Running, sports, or anything that involves getting unnecessarily sweaty
■ Getting sick or being unable to work-- while rarely sick, when August has been sick he tends to be very sick. The inability to work frustrates him to no end, and the hilarity of compromised judgement insisting he can work only compounds that.

STRENGTHS
■ Keeping his emotions in check, or at least off his face.
■ Speed reading -- years of reading lots, reading quickly, and tutoring has made it easier to skim a text and understand it.

WEAKNESSES
■ Perfectionist-- August tends to exaggerate how much is expected of him and stress himself out with these illusions.
■ Overprotective-- August tends to overthink, and this can be overbearing to those closest to him or even intrusive to those more distant

DREAMS
■ Being a really powerful wizard that can clone himself into versions that work in tandem to take care of everything he needs and wants to do.
■ Of a little brick house in Scarborough with his wife, two kids, and two cats.

FEARS
■ Failing-- to live up to expectations, to do anything less than outstanding, failure in general.
■ Misguiding someone--his students, his friends, his family. The closer they are, the more August fears his own influence corrupting them.

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
EARLY CHILDHOOD
August was technically born in England-- his mother hadn’t even known she was pregnant when she accepted an international intellectual property law case in her home country. The case ran long, and she’d been mortified by the idea that the baby might impair her work. He didn’t, but she ended up having to stay in England to have the child. August was born late in the summer, and a week later they were on a flight back to Taiwan.

As a child, August spent at least part of every summer he could remember with relatives in England. His maternal grandparents in Scarborough were as strict as they were doting, and encouraged his writing as much as they emphasized his academics; he had everything he could possibly ask for, but was never without strict supervision. His aunt and uncle in London were more modest but adventurous; they talked to him about feelings and dreams and encouraged he play with his cousin and her friends--those moments were the only times he found himself truly without anyone breathing over his shoulder.

In school, August was noted to have knack for history and math. As a young child, he used to claim it was because a ghost told him stories. This claim was silenced very quickly, and even though August still believed in the “little voice” that kept him company in his room, he knew better than to say anything about it. But as partial result of preferring the company of the little voice, August didn’t have many close friends outside of family on the other side of the world. He got along well enough, if distantly, with his classmates, but there was always something he needed to be studying or practicing more urgently than hanging out.

Everything made sudden sense when a stately wizard delivered his Hogwarts letter a few months before his 11th birthday-- his aunt’s mysterious job, Sonora’s grandparents’ eccentricities, his own ghostly friend. When all skepticism and doubts were cleared, there was a short discussion whether he should attend Long Jiang School of Wizardry instead, but for the first time in his life, August rejected his parents' suggestion and insisted on going to Hogwarts. The night before he left to fly to England to spend the rest of the summer there and go to Diagon Alley, August’s father offered him tearful support, and even his mother didn’t seem to be angry. Nervously optimistic, August resolved to channel his dedication to his schoolwork into his magical studies.

SCHOOL YEARS

FIRST YEAR August's year was spent quietly studying up on the wizarding world and his new classes. Any other time was spent climbing the infernal staircases and trying to get to know his peers. He knew most people by name at least and picked up a few friendships along the way in the Daily Dragon. Quite unexpectedly, he became close confidents with the wild Lizzie Spektor. He was also surprised to be roped into Quidditch announcing, but if his mentor Ferdie said it would help, August was determined to see it through.

SECOND YEAR After a slanderous case where someone kicked Prefect Travers at the Opening Feast only to blame it on him, August was happy to make friends with Jeremy and learn more about wizarding law and governance. Otherwise, August spent the year continuing to work hard in classes and for the Language Club and Daily Dragon. He kept correspondence with Ferdie, sending short stories and calligraphy. After more than one instance of all-day Quidditch Announcing, he was much more comfortable with announcing.

THIRD YEAR August was quite surprised to welcome Rhea Lane to Slytherin and then to Quidditch Announcing with him and did his best to watch out for her in place of her oldest brother. He earned a reputation for recommending supplemental "light reading" to Rhea and her friends and prioritizing understanding of theory. Outside of this tutoring, August kept very busy with classes, clubs, studying, announcing and writing. Partially because of this, he was quite aggravated and disappointed that everyone around him seemed to be bitten by the "doki-doki-lovey-dovey" bug. Unfortunately, his solution that everyone needed more homework to stop thinking romance thoughts was not very popular or effective.

FOURTH YEAR August spent the summer helping to plant a garden of magical plants, tutoring, taking dance classes, and of course, studying. Back at Hogwarts, August was excited to be offered the Managing Editor position for the Daily Dragon and despite initial suspicions, actually enjoyed working with Jonah Lane. Between Daily Dragon, Language Club, tutoring, and of course "light" reading and the occasional Quidditch Announcing match, he was always busy, but still tried to be there for his young mentees, this year including Ferdie's younger brother Eion. He put a respectable effort into OWLs studying as well and decided that the year seemed to go by wonderfully-- when he wrote as much to Ferdie and Jeremy, they were both super supportive. That summer he was honored to be invited to Ferdie and Elisabet Delacroix's wedding.

FIFTH YEAR Adding prefect duties to his schedule in fifth year, August still spent as much time as he could studying and practicing for OWLs. His life was jolted early in the winter when, after a quiet evening dance, Rhea kissed him and confessed her feelings seriously. Although confused by what he should feel, August promised to at least acknowledge Rhea's feelings. The two went on a few Hogsmeade outings together-- not as dates, but just friends, and his thoughts were further muddled. Accordingly, he was very happy to take his own third year advice and assign himself extra reading and studying. Come OWLs, he was very prepared, very satisfied to earn all Os, and spent the rest of the school term very sick. Later when Rhea, who had insisted on taking care of him, also got sick, he returned the favor to take care of her. On the verge of asking her out properly, August hesitated when he started getting nightmares about a Rhea suffering because she was involved with him. Returning to Hogwarts sleep-deprived and confused, he knew only that he could not involve Rhea.

SIXTH YEAR The first half of August's sixth year was spent avoiding discussing feelings Rhea, which only made her more insecure and him more worried. After Winter Break, Rhea herself gave him the cold shoulder, which hurt even more. August buried himself in studying and tutoring, but his plants continued to suffer until Mallaidh had a very illuminating conversation with him. He wrote everything out to Rhea, asking her to save him a dance at the Valentine's Dance. The night of, after panicking that she had left the dance early, he caught her outside, confessed everything, and they agreed on a relationship. He was noticeably more at ease the rest of the year, took Rhea out on little Hogsmeade dates every two weeks at least. With his emotions sorted, his plants thrived.

Summer started with August's paternal grandfather dying. Thankfully, August and his cousins had left early enough to be with the old man in his final moments. Back in Taiwan for the first time since he started at Hogwarts, August caught up with family, which as he discovered, included the ghost from his bedroom. Of course, being himself, August leveraged his newfound connections to Chinese wizarding by enlisting in their help studying for NEWTs.

SEVENTH YEAR August's final year and tenure as Head Boy was marked by serious studying, organizing study parties, and mentoring younger students, particularly Margaux, Annie, and Sparrow, who would be taking over his clubs and quidditch announcing after him. He did his best to be there for Aldrick, who had lost his brother early in the year, and Aidene, who had become a vampire over Winter Break-- even if it just meant sharing notes for class or reminding them to rest. He punched Aldrick for getting Lizzie pregnant, but also redoubled his efforts to make sure both Lizzie and Aldrick were safe, healthy, and able to pursue their goals after graduation.

POST GRADUATION Immediately after graduation, August started as an staff member for a delegate of the International Confederation of Wizards, where he was able to leverage his multilingual skills and understanding of history for legal work. Most of his spare time was spent helping Lizzie and Aldrick get settled, doing extra reading for work, and getting back into creative writing. Once the school year started back up, August could be found at Hogsmeade every weekend he wasn't abroad to meet with Rhea or be there for his mentees.

After Rhea graduated, August went around to every member of the Lane family to solemnly ask for Rhea's hand in marriage. There was a bit of trolling involved, but finally, with everyone's blessing, he proposed. They were engaged early in Winter 2053. In Spring, Rhea had an accident while at work, which led to temporary retrograde amnesia. They spent the summer together, carefully making sure she recovered. She accepted his second proposal, and they moved in together shortly before finally getting married in Winter of 2054. They spent a magical few weeks at Disney World in America.

While they were gone, the Winchester Massacre killed much of his family in England, including his paternal uncle that he had seen more of than his own father. Grief quickly sobered the emotional high he had been on. August tried to help, but Wren, the new Head of the Winchester family and Foundation, stubbornly wanted none of his help. Instead, August buried himself in work, and focused on moving in with a now-pregnant Rhea into a cozy home on the coast of Scarborough.

In the spring, hearing that his former Wizard Law professor was retiring, August took on the mantle as a professor in addition to his work for the International Confederation of Wizards. While the busy and stressful, he was proud to help pass the Continuing Education Program and then the Exchange Program. After only 2 school years though, a series of staff turnovers left August the only remaining staff member on Delegate Isay Archibald's team. With two children, August was eventually forced to reconsider his career and life priorities. He found a much more manageable position as the Head Administrator of the new Continuing Education Program: while much of it was administration, he would still be able to put his educational skills to practice in hiring and management and substituting for any teachers that may be absent. The position allowed him to continue to work at the International Confederation most days, and especially with a young #newcomer.

Favorites
Food Hot chicken soup.
Dessert Almond cookies with marshmallow and peanut butter smashed between them.
Clothes Soft, loose, flowy and does not need to be ironed.
Manga Death Note and Princess Tutu, although the latter he doesn’t fully appreciate until he starts pushing Rhea away
Nonfiction Book Law and Literature; Mythology
Fiction Book East of Eden; Sarum

Typicals
Non-uniform outfit (at home) dress shirt, tie and long jeans. He probably does this at school just out of habit until someone drags him to shopping.
Otherwise: loose sweater over an undershirt and khaki shorts
Handwriting Thin, narrow letters that look scratchy but are evenly spaced and consistent. August in general has neat writing, even when writing quickly. He also does calligraphy, so titles, headings...those are in pristine gothic script.
Smells like rooibos or oolong tea and ink and verbena hand cream.

Misc
Wand Hazel = light brown, emotionally sensitive wood. If the possessor was recently angry or depressed, it may discharge randomly. Rather powerful, and very devoted. Will emit silvery tear-shaped puffs of smoke when passing over concealed underground water (e.g. wells, springs) (Useful because he's afraid of water)
ashwinder ash core= good for protection charms.
Patronus Ashwinder = thin gray snake with red eyes born from magical fires. Lives for under an hour, burns hot, collapses to ash once it's laid its eggs. Eggs are red, hot, and ignite unless frozen by a freezing charm--> used as a cure for fever or in love potions.
Black mamba = fast, fierce snake. Will try to escape but deadly when confronted.
Amortentia smells like rooibos tea, the Li cabin, fresh ink on paper, salt water in cat fur (Pepper) and shea butter and flowers (Rhea)
Boggart is a wave crashing over him, drowning; later, it's Rhea drowning. This or failing his mother.
The water turns into just a layer of paint and (Rhea) laughing.
Chinese name: 梨玫镰 Pear-Rose-Scythe

Personality (y7) backup

PROTECTIVE August is fiercely protective of people, sometimes not for the most rational reasons. Regardless of what he likes and respects and wants from his own life, he’s willing to take any lengths if they are threatened or wronged, his usual deference to rules and authority and even ethics be damned. Although a year younger than his cousin, he cherishes particularly his summers and letters with her and sees her innocence as something that needs to be protected.

CIVIL Never appear upset. August has been directed from birth basically to never appear anything but professional and polite to “outsiders”. His mask is as much ingrained as it is practiced and intentional at this point and he is quite good at portraying calm, unfettered and perfectly civil regardless of his actual thoughts. Around his family though, he’s a little more expressive about irritation and opinions.

DETERMINED Doggedly persistent, August has been taught that if he’s not getting what he wants, it only means he didn’t work hard enough. Truth is as much what actually happened/ how things actually happen as it is how a tale is told; if a story isn’t told the way he wants, then he needs to either fix his thinking or get better at telling the truth he wants expressed.

BITTER Despite his achievements at school, August is terrified that he is just one failure away from ruin. He’s seen a family work out because of his aunt and uncle and his maternal grandparents, but he knows there’s something off about his own parents and can’t imagine that it’ll go well for him. He's a young cynic who's still trying to figure out what hurting people means and what needs protecting or avenging.

PRESSURED Authority exists for a reason and August has been brought up to respect that authority. It doesn’t mean they’re always right, but it’s important to know, understand, and respect at least. For his parents, this respect is manifested as obedience, and with that obedience comes pressure--pressure to carry on his father's legacy, to live up to his mother's expectations, to protect those closest to him from near or afar.

STUDIOUS Even away from his parents, August has kept up a strict schedule of studying, supplementary reading and practicing magic. Even his extracurriculars he treats like classes, studying up on Quidditch like it was a class for announcing, or referencing textbooks to help write Daily Dragon articles. He is most comfortable talking academics, and has been happy to tutor younger students, seeing great value for his own studying in teaching others.

Dream:
■ Being a really powerful wizard that can clone himself into a muggle version and a wizard version that work in tandem to alleviate all the pressure in his life.

Fear:
■ Drowning-- he can’t actually swim. Every time he’s had to he’s been able to get away some way or another. But he’s never put in the effort to swim and is low-key terrified it’ll come back to haunt him.

Yer post is gonna go here. Words. Descriptions. Let us know what your character is thinking and feeling. Let us know what's going on with their senses. Put yourself in their shoes. "Oh, and sometimes your character will say stuff. That'll go here," they say. And then maybe you'll say why they said that, or how they felt as they said that. Thinking is also good. As a child you would wait
And watch from far away
But you always knew that you'd
be the one to work while they all play.
In youth, you'd lay
Awake at night and scheme
Of all the things you would change
But it was just a dream

He's not very good, but is getting better.)

~August is studying for OWLs as a 4th year. He has theory absolutely down in every subject, even Herbology. The only thing he needs brushing up on are practical details in Herbology (caring for, and he's rapidly getting better) Transfiguration (It's actually pretty okay, it's just some details are sometimes weird), and DADA (Which are fine; he probably isn't winning duels just because he doesn't do very many offensive things. But he can cast a Flipendo--Expelliarmus perfectly fine.)

OWLs

CORE
Astronomy~ O
Early on, August’s biggest problem was Astronomy was translating what he already knew from muggle physics and learning to English. Once this was solved in first year, Astronomy became easier and easier to study. Inspired by Vespera cross-referencing muggle healing texts, August read through Astronomy texts while summering with muggle relatives. It was one of the few subjects he could safely study around them, after all.

Charms ~ O
August loved Charms...Theory. When confused about casting in first year, he read up on spell theory and struggled with it until his spells worked. The written portion was a breeze, and thanks to some good advice and practice with Aldrick and Lizzie, August was able to do preform the spells proficiently.

Defense Against the Dark Arts~ O
August held a deep respect for Professor Cohen and her class and adopted the philosophy that magic was more about making good choices rather than casting flashy spells. His Spell Theory reading and tutoring came in handy here as well, and he found some of the DADA spells quite practical for other purposes.

Herbology ~ O
Herbology had always been August’s academic weakness, not because he didn’t know the plants or write coherently about them, but because he tended to follow recommendations and instructions to the letter when it came to actually taking care of the plants. Despite constant practical failings, he diligently sought help from Professor Hill throughout the years and read up on supplementary texts. He spent two summers (summer following 3rd and 4th years) helping his aunt restructure her garden of magical herbs, which also helped him get more comfortable with the plants. Combined with a thorough knowledge of how gathered plant parts worked in potions, this was a simple written exam and nerve-wracking practical, but ultimately he was very proud to receive the O.

History of Magic ~ O
History--both English and Chinese--had been a favorite subject for August even in muggle elementary. Being introduced to Wizarding History was like unlocking yet another layer of his favorite story. He read voraciously in every subject, and background information for everything helped build not only a more thorough understanding of the subject, but also always fed back into a thorough understanding of the historical context. History also always seemed like the only subject they were both good at that Aldrick didn't feel like competing over, and they enjoyed many a fruitful conversation over.

Potions ~ O
Potions for August was simply a matter of following instructions directly and precisely, which was August’s preferred method. As with other classes, he was quite concerned with the theory of how different ingredients worked together as well as the rationale behind particular procedures. So while he had to rush a little towards the end of the practical, the most of the exam August knew exactly what he was doing and why.

Transfiguration ~ O
Transfiguration theory August had zero problem in. He was well read on transfiguration theory, and his cousin and mentee, Sonora and Rhea, taking an interest in animagus studies meant that he could always turn to them for questions or help practicing. He can admirably perform the required spells and thoroughly explain the theory behind more advanced ones, but it was not his favorite or best course by any means.

ELECTIVES
Ancient Runes ~ O
Five years in the language club has helped August pick up tricks for learning new languages and gave him an interest in the ancient runic scripts. He adopted very quickly to Professor Powell’s attitude that Runes were an extension of history, another favorite class, and gladly spent time practicing translations, writing in the scripts just for practice or debating with Aldrick or Sonora about some translation.

Arithmancy~ O
Arithmancy quickly became one of August’s favorite subjects in third year and he enjoyed not only his usual assignments, but doing “challenge problems” taken from his older friends’ textbooks. By year four he was tutoring for the year ahead, and happily read theory explanations as part of “light reading”.

Ghouls and Ghosts ~ O
Inspired by the ghost in his bedroom back in Taiwan, August’s interest in Ghouls and Ghosts often fed into his short stories, and as a result of doing extensive research into these stories he’d also end up reading extra for the class.

Muggle Studies ~ O
August self-studied for Muggle Studies, thinking it would be useful as a muggleborn wizard to know wizarding perspectives of muggles. He had first hand experience from growing up a muggleborn and visiting his muggle maternal grandparents over the vacations.

Mythology ~ O
At the recommendation of his mentors, August took Mythology and took easily to the subject. It was like History 2.0 for him, and he took to reading both wizarding and muggle myths. He may have tried writing his own wizarding style myths, but those attempts remain unseen under the bed.

Wizard Law~ O
August had accepted before he even knew about magic that he was going to be doing something law or hospitality. From age 11 onwards, it was decided to be wizarding law. He dotted his original stories with legal proceedings, studied the rules and histories associated with wizarding law. In his second year he made friends with Slytherin Prefect Jeremy Travers over their mutual interest in law and kept in regular contact after Jeremy’s graduation, discussing via letter legal concepts he couldn’t quite grasp yet.

-----------------------------------------
Petition for higher than average grades:
Fueled in part by a fear of failure and by high expectations for himself and from his parents, August has always been a very diligent and prepared student on top of his other responsibilities. His academic rivalry with the very competitive Aldrick Knapp was yet another push to expecting only the highest marks of himself. He’s stated as pre-reading all subjects before September and started studying for OWLs specifically before his fourth year/ NEWTs since his sixth. He is known for reading voraciously in any subject, referencing details and specifics brought up in reference notes only, readily recommending books in magic theory when tutoring students, and-- to a small subset of folks--weaving theoretical and factual descriptions in with his short stories. Theory, and anything that can be studied from a book, is definitively his strong suit and he uses this very thorough knowledge of theory to hone spell work.

Other responsibilities and activities:
  • Prefect
  • Daily Dragon Managing Editor (which helps concise writing)
  • Language Club (which helps his language familiarity and tutoring)
  • Quidditch Announcing/ Color Commentary (public speaking for the speech-based practicals)
  • Writing short stories (which always weaves in some aspect that he’s particularly interested in studying)
  • Tutoring (studying with both those older and younger means finding ways to explain content and knowing that content well)

NEWTs

CORE
Charms ~ O
Spell theory was one of August’s favorite things to study, right up there with Potions and Arithmancy theory. His written portion was thus flawless. NEWT-level charms also introduced nonverbal spells, and while casting wandlessly was more difficult, August made use of simple, everyday charms, and practiced any practical spells to perfection.

Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ O
As with Charms, August’s understanding of spell theory was eloquently expressed in the written portion. His practical spellcasting was honed diligently due to its importance to both legal professions and auror professions. He and Lizzie spent many hours working out precise and effective spellcasting to any creatures she might encounter as an auror, and practicing with her encouraged him to keep up with the practical aspects of DADA. Despite his usual straight-laced demeanor, self-imposed pressure on himself, and his awkwardness with creatures, August found plenty to laugh about and treasure over the years which made for effective boggart and patronus fodder.

Herbology ~ E
Despite his struggles with Herbology throughout his Hogwarts career, August received a lot of help regarding Herbology from not only Professor Hill, but also family and other students. This combination of efforts encouraged him to continue Herbology at the NEWT level. While his performance through much of sixth year was up and down due to other emotional issues, his theoretical and academic knowledge of the subject has never faltered, and his practical care has improved greatly from continued diligence. In sixth year Mallaidh offered the insight that his plants mirrored his emotions and stress-- and while seventh year was definitely his busiest year, it was made possible and infinitely better by his relationship with Rhea and meaningful mentoring relationships. He was much calmer, and his plant care and work reflected that faithfully. Professor Hill had predicted he would receive an E in sixth year, and he worked very hard to do better than that -- indeed, by the seventh year his plants were thriving. But on the day of the exam, August couldn’t stop insisting that an E was unacceptable; ironically, if he had accepted that an E wouldn’t be the end of the world, his plants in the exam would have felt the pressure off and he would have received the O.

History of Magic ~ O
From reading biographies of notable arithmancers to accounts of how ghosts had influenced the development of wizarding law, History was August’s best and favorite subject. It helped that Mallaidh and Aldrick, his close friends, were also diligent historians. History on any subject was always worth exploring, and reading up on the history of everything was standard supplemental reading that always contributed back to his understanding of History.

Potions ~ O
Potions Theory was as fascinating as Spell Theory, and potions work had always been a matter of precision and practice following instructions rather than intuition. Following Potions recipes had always been easier for August than casting spells, and his patience for studying potions was apparent in his confidence on the exam.

ELECTIVES
Ancient Runes ~ O
Learning Ancient Runes as a language was fun to begin with, but learning to use magic with it was even more powerful. With more free time to explore and experiment, August might have even preferred runic magic where available. He didn’t get as much time as he would have liked to explore use and integration of runic magic, but the studying he did was more than enough to earn him an Outstanding at the NEWT level.

Arithmancy~ O
Like History, Arithmancy was another subject which August was very excited about. He was tutoring the subject for almost as long as he was taking it, and his penchant for using more complicated problems to destress or avoid his feelings gave him early exposure to NEWTs content. Despite the high-stakes nature of the exam, this was one of the more relaxing exams he took, and a good exam to close off the week with.

Ghouls and Ghosts ~ O
Ghouls and ghosts had fed August's short story writing in previous years, and in some cases looking up story material exposed him to details from more advanced studies. While he had less time to write in the upper years, this fascination for looking things up—or just a friendly conversation with the Hogwarts ghosts—persisted. Even if he couldn’t write a full story, he could make notes or outlines of plots. Over the summer before 7th year he reconnected with the ghost in his childhood bedroom and of course leveraged their help in understanding ghosts from Chinese perspectives.

Muggle Studies ~ O
While August spent more time with wizarding relatives over the breaks in upper years, he did maintain regular contact and always at least visited with non-magical family. This was a self-study exam, taken because he wanted to be familiar with wizarding perspectives on muggles for his legal work.

Mythology ~ O
With less time to do his own short story writing, August used Mythology as his creative fix over the week. He looked up the historical contexts to different myths, reading and making notes to capture the themes and details as they changed over time; sometimes he would simply rewrite scenes as they might be told in more modern times and submit these as homework. Inspired by Professor Harlowe‘s openness to non-traditional homework formats, he encouraged younger students to use Mythology as a creative outlet as well, and found great insight in how the same content he preferred to use creative writing for could be expressed in short monologues or character clothing.

Wizard Law~ O
Law was decidedly August’s future career, and thankfully countless hours of reading extensively on the subject gave him enough to enjoy about it. He had a good mentor in business law from Jeremy, and inspired by Vespera’s cross-referencing muggle medical texts for Healing, August started referencing international documents for wizarding law as early as in his OWL studies. It gave him insight into the worldwide context of wizarding law, put his language club studies to good use, and kept him well informed of the activities of the International Confederation of Wizards.

-----------------------------------------
Petition for higher than average grades:
Fueled in part by a fear of failure and by high expectations for himself and from his parents, August has always been a very diligent and prepared student on top of his other responsibilities. His mentoring interests and other leadership positions have given him less time to relax and write, but also put him in the position of having to not only understand something enough for an exam, but enough to tutor. He’s stated as pre-reading all subjects before September and started studying for NEWTs almost immediately after OWLs ended. Among mentees (or anyone who he might encounter as part of prefect or head boy duties) he's known for reading voraciously in any subject, referencing details and specifics brought up in reference notes only, emphasizing historical contexts of any subject, and readily recommending books in magic theory. While Theory, and anything that can be studied from a book, is definitively still his strong suit, for the most part August has made use of this knowledge and theory to make honing practical work more efficient and effective.
