Notes for playing Primary tension:Stability and Adventure Sonora’s life is built around habits and stable reflection: reading, hiking, music, constant improvement. She’s excited by the promise of adventure though, and drawn to wit, mischief, and wisdom that can’t be captured by the page. As she recognizes this tension in herself she becomes more open and friendly to those around her, seeking adventure in helping to craft their experiences. Marked by ambitionto also do the great things that her mother’s side of the family has done, to be successful and happy in her academics/ career, to be everything for her loved ones.

Animagus: (Registered) Sonora was relieved and thrilled to actually be a bird in her Animagus form. Even after completing the transformation, Sona dedicated many hours to familiarizing herself with her bird form, including shifting fluidly between forms mid-fall or in potentially dangerous situations, and incorporating being a bird into dueling. She is comfortable spending long periods of time as a bird.
Apparation: Apparation is not Sonora's preferred form of transport. She can do so safely, but only to very familiar locales. She cannot apparate under high-stress situations.

REFLECTIVE A childhood of metacognitive assessments and tasks has made a habit of discussing feelings, organizing thoughts, and analyzing situations with someone close to her. Although she still gets emotional about her mistakes and failures, she’s used to organizing her thoughts for analysis and improvement and tries to do the same for her friends.
FOCUSED Sonora gives her full attention to whatever she's trying to do in any given moment, whether that be reading a book, practicing a spell, or just letting her imagination run wild. When she’s somewhere or with someone, she is paying attention to that, or at least focusing on how she can support or contribute. It’s not that she doesn’t get distracted, but rather she has strategies for managing them. Staying focused doesn't mean being stuck on one subject though-- Sona learns by building connections and recognizing patterns to things, and as part of learning a concept or technique as best she can, she tries to come up with creative ways to apply them.
POSITIVE Sonora believes everyone can be happy, that there doesn't need to be an antagonist, and that everything will definitely be alright. She’s not actually an idealist--she knows things won’t always go smoothly, but at least for herself she's going to believe that everything will be okay, or at least happen for a reason. Even when she's feeling insecure or down, some part of Sona always sees the silver lining--or at least tries to.
CONSISTENT Sonora very much likes and relies on the structure of her everyday schedule. And while mediocre to start at anything, Sona excels with diligent practice and creative use of what she knows and has. ♫♪EARLY CHILDHOOD Sonora was born to a life of emotional privilege, the only daughter of Elmond Li and Verine Winchester. Verine is a potioneer with an emphasis on research and development; Elmond is an event coordinator for a nearby hotel, but spends most of his time taking care of his daughter and the home. Sonora grew up surrounded by the busy guests of the hotel, and she was mostly content to follow her parents around on their daily adventures. Her mother was very mysterious and something just odd, but her father seemed to understand, and Sonora figured that in time, she would too.
In her primary education, Sonora performed proficiently but otherwise unremarkably. Her afternoons were spent in piano classes or doing homework in her father’s office, occasionally saying hello to a guest or client who came to see her father. If they were well-behaved and didn’t disturb the furniture, she and her best friend, Zina, would be allowed to play in an empty conference room. Evenings were spent at home reading or “debriefing” their days with her father, but there was the occasional hotel social function or concert they’d attend. Weekends were spent reading novels at the end of a hiking trail or volunteering for some cause. Breaks were usually spent camping in Ireland with Sonora’s maternal grandparents, a strange couple very disconnected from the modern world with fantastical tales. She's also close to her cousins-- her paternal cousin, August, stays with them every summer and her young maternal cousins live in an estate across the city.
Magic was not formally acknowledged in the family until a camping trip gone wrong revealed Sonora’s latent magic when she was eight. Thereafter, her mother explained the existence of magic and the wizarding world--and had a very clear discussion of how no one could know about the existence of magic, not even Zina. No Muggle could be allowed any inkling that a magical world existed, with her father being the sole exception to this rule. Sonora's actual schedule showed very little change. But knowing that her grandparents’ wild stories were true (albeit heavily embellished), and being allowed to accompany her mother to the shop was a dream come to life. She was taught only how to conceal her magic but read voraciously from the wizarding world, and as soon as her Hogwarts acceptance letter arrived, Sonora spent every moment at home eagerly asking or imagining what being part of the magical community would be like.
♫♪SCHOOL YEARS
♫FIRST YEAR Sonora was homesick much of her first year, but found solace in music and Quidditch practice, and her new friends, particularly in Jonah Lane and Vespera Salazar's pranking each other. Classes were really fun, aside from Herbology which she was always a little nervous in and Astronomy, which she was constantly sleeping in. With her childhood friend away for summers, Sona found herself missing her friends at the castle as much as she missed her parents at home when she was there. She did get a bird from her grandmother, who took in rescues. Skyfire is an American kestrel rescue who stayed with Scytharia's owls during his fledgling years and was trained to deliver mail like one.
♪SECOND YEAR Sonora made a solid effort to be more social this year and stay up for Astronomy. She joined the Dueling Club, got tutoring from the Astronomy Club, adopted Lee, and organized a winter picnic. Life is great.
♫THIRD YEAR Signing up for 10 electives was a terrible idea, as Sona found out. Even though she enjoyed all her classes, Sona found herself constantly stressed, tired, and definitely not doing as well as she wanted or even as well as she had before. Her normal routines were thrown off and nothing seemed to be able to fix them--or the constant exhaustion. Winter break was only a temporary reprieve and by finals she was tired of being tired. Throughout all this she relied on her friends for support, so it hit particularly hard when she mixed up Kam and Iggy. Later, she tried to comfort Kam in their argument, but generally felt useless.
Summer started off wonderfully, but her sleepover with Jonah and his family was interrupted by a werewolf attack. Rion was taken out almost immediately, Sona was terrified and barely able to land a few spells on the wolf--and if it weren't for Jonah's quick thinking she'd definitely had been more hurt. She had barely managed to land a few spells in, but it was only thanks to another wolf intervening that they got away. Sona did manage to pull herself together enough to make up a story for the muggle hospital, and ultimately walked away with only torn clothes and a gash that later healed into a mere line on the back of her hand. In the aftermath, she tried to keep her spirits up and resolved to be less helpless, but a bit of self-doubt was creeping into her usual positivity. The Magizoology Festival and being around friends again helped, but come start of the school year she found herself nervous instead of excited for the first time.
♪FOURTH YEAR After the summer encounter with a werewolf and only terse replies from Jonah, Sonora took to fourth year with somber determination. She had a moment of weakness where she considered dropping Quidditch on top of the few classes she'd dropped since last year, but was soon reminded how much she loved flying. Luckily, classes went smoothly anyways. She was happy for Jonah and Iggy when they got together, but devastated that Jonah and Vespera seemed to be avoiding her and found herself feeling lonely and distracted. The first part of the year was spent quietly practicing her spells and learning to string them together for dueling strategies. Throughout the year, she spent most of her time with Kam, studying, practicing and ready. To great relief, she did finally reconcile with Jonah before winter break, and with Vespera in the spring.
♪FIFTH YEAR Summer started with another scare from Iggy in the hospital, but she was happy that he and Kam had reconciled. Even though she didn't really know what to expect, she happily agreed to date Kam towards the end of summer. They enjoyed morning walks, studying, a few dates, and an awkward kiss together, but as winter neared, Sona was forced to confront her growing feelings for Jonah. It broke her heart to break up with Kam and spent Winter Break crying. It didn't help that Iggy and Jonah broke up once they were back at Hogwarts. She kept her feelings to herself, and focused on trying to comfort her friends the best she could. She spent most of the second semester studying for OWLs with Vespera or working on things in preparation of Animagus transformations.
♪SIXTH YEAR With many of her weaker subjects dropped this year, Sonora thought her coursework this year was much more manageable-- even if the work was more challenging, for (most) classes this was the enjoyable kind of challenging she had missed. She was excited to be working on Animagus preparations in earnest with her roommate Lara, but keeping the mandrake leaf in her mouth tested her patience to the extreme.
Early December, after a third unsuccessful mandrake leaf, Sona broke down in hysterical sobs and Jonah took her up to the Astronomy tower to vent. Afterwards the two finally confessed their feelings for each other and shared a kiss under the stars. Sonora was ecstatic to be with Jonah and their relationship came easily. A few months later, he was the first to see her new Animagus form-- his nightingale, just as he'd said years ago.
♪SEVENTH YEAR Sonora's final year was kept very busy with NEWTs, Dueling captainship and head girl responsibilities, among which was planning the Valentine's Dance-- She was very happy to finally see August and Rhea together by the end of the night. Working with her good friend Vinny was a great experience, and while she never got to reprise her picnic idea, Sona felt like she got to know and support a lot of students through the experience. When not otherwise busy or studying, Sona dedicated her time to familiarizing herself with her Animagus form. She quickly became more comfortable in the form and spent as much time in it as she could-- for example, sleeping on her friends as a bird was a quick way to power nap without going all the way back to the dorm. Quidditch was another highlight of the year--and Sona was thrilled to catch the snitch in neck-to-neck races every game.
The cherry-on-top of a perfect year came just after NEWTs while discussing post-graduation plans. Jonah proposed, and while surprised, Sonora was ecstatic to accept. They agreed the wedding would probably be a few years off to allow them to settle into their careers (and to give Rion and August a chance to calm down and agree to come), but they were officially engaged before graduation!
♫♪MARRIAGE, CAREER, and CHILDREN Immediatley following graduation, Sonora's parental grandfather's health declining brought the entire Winchester/ Li family together in Taipei; Sona invited Jonah along to meet everyone, as he would soon be family too. Unfortunately, the gathering turned into a funeral.
Jonah and Sona returned to the U.K. in early July for work: Jonah would be studying the migration patterns of hippogryffs and Sonora would be doing cursebreaking, helping to scout and secure sites for research. As they anticipated having to travel regularly, they opted for a magic-friendly yurt instead of a permanent residence. They lived and loved life on the road and seemed to be in a new country every few months but returned regularly if infrequently to the UK to visit with friends and family. Finally, after both their careers had settled, they were married in a fun, early-morning wedding on 30 December 2051.
In March 2054, after a painful and harrowing pregnancy, Jonah and Sona welcomed their first daughter, Violet Seraphina Lane, to the world. At the end of the year, the Winchester Estate was attacked. Sonora managed to break the fiendfyre curse rampaging through the estate but passed out from smoke inhalation while getting out. Luckily, Jonah recognized and rescued her bird form. In the months that followed, she and Jonah stayed mostly in her childhood home, grieving the loss of her dad.
In the years that followed, Sona focused mostly on her work. Two years later, when she and Jonah had their second daughter, Luna Azalea Lane, she and Jonah decided to shift their schedules and responsibilities so the children would have a more stable home location. Jonah left his position in magizoology to start a magical creatures and pet sanctuary clinic while doing magizoology research and photography on the side, Sona shifted her work to more in-office cursebreaking work. While she still regularly travels for work, moist of these visits can be accomplished in the course of a long work day, with longer trips limited to a few times a year.

Schedule year 5
Generally: ~Wakes up around 6, latest 6:30 everyday. Gets ready, meets Kam at the Entrance Hall, goes on a short walk down to the boathouse, breakfast, back to Ravenclaw tower then to block 1. Occasionally changes her route if alone, but doesn't really go more than 10-15 minutes out before heading back. ~Between classes: Doing homework in the library or reading/ studying outside in her hammock. ~After classes: Studying in the Common Room or library ~Prefers to sleep around 22:00/ 22:30 but can stay awake for Astronomy without much problem and all night if necessary (although she'll be very quiet the next day).
Her OWLS studying is stacked towards Monday/ Tuesday, and a little on Sunday. Towards the end of the year spends more time reviewing.

OWLs
CORE Astronomy ~ A
Sonora’s experience with Astronomy is constantly sleeping through it and try as she might to study it, there’s only so much she can get from memorizing a book before an exam. Since second year she recognized it as a problem and attended the Astronomy club for extra tutoring. Jonah and Lena’s tutoring are probably the only reason this isn’t a failing grade.
Charms ~ O
Charms was one of Sonora’s favorite classes and she enjoyed opportunities to practice her charmwork in even mundane ways. She and Vespera would also brush up on spells by thinking of creative ways to use each spell and then either trying them or looking up use cases. While she didn’t always pick up new spells with ease, diligent practice, creative ways of practicing and using spellcasting build up her skills over the years.
Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ O
DADA was another favorite subject from day one, and Sona appreciated the practical aspects of the class. She would pay careful attention to her readings on dark creatures, thinkiing them would be essential to know for her future cursebreaking aspirations. She applied the same dedication to spells in DADA as she did to Charms.
Herbology ~ E
Even though she was initially afraid of Professor Hill and being locked in the greenhouse, once her fears were mollified by knowing she had friends around, Sonora was happy to focus on the plants. What she knows about Herbology is still based primarily in plant uses in potions, and she was never afraid of getting her hands dirty to care for and collect a few extra herbs for extra potions practice.
History of Magic ~ A
While fine for the first two years, History became unintentionally sidelined in third year, and Sona never really recovered from that. While on the whole she enjoyed the subject and found ways to connect it to possible cursebreaking sites or other interests, her uneven treatment of the subject and having many other classes to study for didn’t do her favors on the written portion of the exam.
Potions ~ O
Sona’s mother is a potioneer, and helping out over the summers kept her potion skills and knowledge up over the breaks. She was inspired by Professor Blodwen’s ability to fix or adapt existing potions to use and aspired to reach that level of understanding and familiarity. While late night potions classes starting 4th year took a toll on her, she was generally quite proficient, particularly once she started studying and practicing more complex potions in preparation for animagus classes at Professor Drage’s recommendation.
Transfiguration ~ O
Figuring out transfiguration theory was a puzzle that once figured out, helped Sona understand the rest of her classes. Between creative ways of using transfiguration in dueling and studying up in preparation for attempting an Animagus transformation, she put plenty of practice and study into transfiguration. Professor Drage’s office hours were one of the ones she frequented, either because she had questions or updates about animagus things or simply to discuss what they were doing that week.
ELECTIVES Arithmancy ~ A
Simple enough in her third year, Arithmancy started becoming a problem in year 4 and in order to keep up, Sonora basically resorted to just memorizing facts about the numbers instead of doing her usual patient search for patterns and underlying understandings. It frustrates her because her mum is quite fond of arithmancy and becuase Sona feels that she would quite enjoy doing predictions with arithmancy if she was only more familiar with how the numbers worked. In any case, she maintains a basic enough understanding for using it but usually relies on Kam or even August or Lee’s help to check over more complex calculations.
Ancient Runes ~ E
Sonora took to Ancient Runes with particular enthusiasm because of its relevance to cursebreaking. She and Kam used to spend entire weekends working on practice translations and carefully analyzing potential translations and their implications. Following their breakup and the distance bet
Cursebreaking ~ O
Cursebreaking had been a matter of fascination for Sona since childhood, listening to her grandfather’s cursebreaking adventures. In class, she really enjoyed figuring out the puzzles required. In studying, she connected as much of her classes to practical things that cursebreakers might encounter, and viewed everything through that lens. In her free time she would keep up to date on adventures of other cursebreakers, and even had a notebook filled with notes on known sites of unbroken curses.
Healing ~ E
After her encounter with a werewolf after year three, Sona redoubled her efforts in healing. Studying with Vespera, who was dedicated to the Healing path was helpful as well. She practiced the spells learned with her usual dedication to spellwork, and focused on capturing big ideas and understanding how things hit together.
Music ~ A ← So there’s a reason to be nervous come NEWTs!
Sonora had been playing piano since young, and keeping up practice in the music club and over the summers from year one. Earlier in the year she had Kam to review music theory with, but after their breakup, she found studying it alone terribly lonely. Still, Music should have been an easy O, but come exam day, there was a short part on the written exam that made her stumble, and that second guessing later manifested as an uncharacteristic stumble in a performance she had thought she was quite practiced for.
Wandless Magic ~ A
Sona has always been mediocre to start but excels because of consistent and diligent practice and creative use of the spells in her arsenal. When it came to Wandless magic, her hours and hours of dedicated practice built up with her wand was temporarily negated and doing any kind of complex magic--namely her favorite transfiguration spells-- seemed all but impossible. She’s much better with unspoken spells with her wand as they extend off her familiarity with the spell. For her exam, her written portion was fine, but for practical purposes she had really only mastered enough wandless magic to stall long enough to summon her wand back.

CORE Charms ~ O
From first year, Sonora found every excuse to practice and understand Charms creative ways. Everyday charms are almost second nature to preform, and she has picked up on new charms rather well in more recent years thanks to a very solid foundation. Getting practice with nonverbal spells in Wandless gave her time to work and practice, so by the time they encountered it in Charms, she was well prepared.
Defense Against the Dark Arts~ O
DADA was another subject that Sona enjoyed very much from year one. She paid particular attention to any kind of dark arts she might encounter while cursebreaking, and combined her knowledge of cursebreaking creative defense. For combat skills, she designed and drilled herself on sets of complementary spells and abilities and practiced and built upon these throughout her 6 years in dueling club (2 of which she was captain).
Potions~ E
While Potions was never Sonora’s easiest class, she got a surprising amount of practice with it throughout the year-- from restocking her mother’s potioneering shop over the summers to reading up on Alchemy in her free time. Knowing how ingredients work together and having a potion prepared ahead of time suit her way of thinking and preparing very well. Her exam was nearly-perfect, although there was one question she could have used more time to elaborate on.
Transfiguration~ O
Between studying for her Animagus process and regularly using transfiguration in dueling, Sonora was in constant practice with transfiguration, both in practice and in theory. As with charms, her familiarity with some common transfigurations--particularly turning things to birds or shifting into her Animagus form--has become almost second nature.
ELECTIVES Ancient Runes~ E
Sonora had always enjoyed exploring the meanings and uses of runes, and was even more excited to apply this to runic magic. She spent many a day exploring what different protections or runes might be useful in dueling, cursebreaking, or music and could have easily spent more time with it. It was great fun, but her studying schedule this year simply didn't allow for the kind of in-depth time she wanted to spend with it.
Arithmancy ~ A
Arithmancy was always a hard subject and while she’d gotten much better and had more fun with it once they started divination work with it, Arithmancy was still Sonora’s worst subject. She put in a solid effort studying, but ultimately she was fine with an A.
Cursebreaking~ O
From a mere curiosity to a passion, cursebreaking soon became what Sonora tied everything to. She got as much practical experience working with curses as she could and frequently went back to try to solve curses with different limitations. She kept up to date on cursebreaking adventures in the world, reading eagerly from news and journals as much as fiction and historical accounts.
Healing~ A
Sonora focused on healing use cases that might come up in the field for cursebreakers, more concerned with how to repair injuries in the field and leaving advanced healing for future healers like Vespera. She even studied a little on bird physiology in case she got injured as a bird. Sona knows her skills and limits quite clearly here. While her practicality and focus indeed honed the skills and spells that she would need for quick field diagnoses and first aid, the NEWT exam did not discriminate for purposes.
Music~ E.
After a scare with OWLs, Sona made sure to set aside extra practice leading up to the Music exam, which was perfectly fun: music was always been a part of her life, from piano practice to learning to sing better Her relationship with Kam mended, studying theory was again enjoyable, and having her usual piano partner back—at least for music club practice— was a relief. The written exam still threw a curveball at her though. This time though, Sona spent the time leading up to her performance with Jonah, and having him to focus on helped her center herself for the practical.
Wandless~ A
Sonora was initially tempted to drop Wandless magic after her frustrations studying for the OWL. Thankfully, with most of her best friends continuing it, Sona was persuaded to stick it out. With more years and more practice with wandless magic, Sonora’s ability at wandless and nonverbal magic improved. While she is still much better with her wand, she can now reliably use wandless magic for simple charms, or in a tight combat situation. Her NEWTs grade mirrors her OWLs grade, but given the jump in difficulty, Sona was perfectly content with it.

Sona's daily commute might involve apparating or flying to a nearby floo place and then going to the agency office. Or, if in the field, she'd take a portkey with Jonah to wherever the cursebreaking site is and set up camp somewhere they can both work, then day of fly or apparate to the specific location.
Wakes up around 6:30 -- Gets ready, goes on a short 20-minute walk (or flight) around the place, breakfast, and wakes Jonah up. Reviews notes and thoughts, then leaves the yurt area for the office or site around 8-9. Usually spends a few hours going examining the area, taking notes and planning. Takes his lunch at 11:30 and returns at 12:30 if she went home; often just stays on the site if she's not meeting Jonah. Office days she'll spend examining runes, devising strategies, referencing and comparing notes. Usually leaves around 18- 19:00. If she's the first home she'll shower, feed the pets, destress a bit with a book or piano, then start dinner while humming. If she's back second she'll shower, do whatever else needs doing and just talk to Jonah. Usually in bed or asleep by 22:00.
Occasionally if there's no nearby hippogryff reserve and she'll go alone to a a remote cursebreaking site for a few days.
Off days
Wakes up around 7:00 and reads while snuggling. Cleans the yurt, gets groceries, works on wedding stuff Sometimes goes to the office to do reading or check notes. Otherwise, usually just hangs out with Jonah, does little dates. Sometimes convinced him to go on a hike to take pictures, or just a window-shopping trip. (Books and scores are her weakness). Usually has lunch or dinner with friends or coworkers if away. She makes a point to schedule the Super Seven in for the days she knows she's back in the UK and always visits her parents. (also include: Lara and Jordan) Sleeps usually around 22:00 unless talking to Jonah on the roof or something. Sometimes falls asleep on their hammock reading or humming.

Takes her lunch at 11:30 and returns at 12:30 or 13:00. Usually arranges to meet up with friends over lunch. Office days she'll spend examining runes, devising strategies, referencing and comparing notes. Usually leaves around 18- 19:00. If she's the first home she'll shower, feed the pets, destress a bit with a book or piano, then start dinner while humming. If she's back second she'll shower, do whatever else needs doing and just talk to Jonah. Usually in bed or asleep by 22:00.
Occasionally she'll go alone to a remote cursebreaking site for a few days.
Off days
Wakes up around 6:30 and reads while snuggling. Cleans the house gets groceries Sometimes goes to the office to do reading or check notes. Otherwise, usually just hangs out with Jonah, does little dates. Sometimes convinces him to go on a hike to take pictures, or just a window-shopping trip. (Books and scores are her weakness). Usually has lunch or dinner with friends or coworkers. he makes a point to schedule the Super Seven in for the days she knows she's back in the UK and always visits her parents. (also include: Lara and Jordan) Sleeps usually around 22:00 unless talking to Jonah on the roof or something. Sometimes falls asleep on their hammock reading or humming.
