His runs to the grocery store were usually uneventful. It was the grocery store, after all. It was the weekly stock up of consumables, that, more often than not as of late, extended beyond himself. He was starting, more and more, to have to buy things that Noah liked as well, since she was staying over more and more. Not that he minded, because he didn't...it was just something he noted that was becoming a more regular occurrence.

Hurst just dropped some boxes of Fruit Loops and Frosted Flakes into his cart when movement at the end of the aisle caught his eye. The person who had his attention now, was also familiar. Not in the sense he had met him. He'd seen a picture of him from Nadia.

Lorne.

Well then.

He knew he could pass the man and Nadia's love would be none the wiser but...well. Where would the fun in that be? A corner of Hurst's lip pulled up. Looks like this wasn't about to be a regular grocery run after all. There was some entertainment here to be had, if what Nadia said about the man was true.

Hurst pushed the cart down until he drew closer, keeping his gaze focused on the other man, and once he was close enough for voices to be conversational, he started. "Oh, it's a small world, isn't it? Fancy meeting you here, Lorne." Hurst started. "I'm a friend---" The emphasis on the word was accompanied by a wide and all too knowing smile. "Of Nadia's. She told me you two got back in touch recently. I suppose a welcome back is in order?"

Lorne was really just there for the basic essentials - a bit less than that, actually. His hotel room had a refrigerator, true, but hardly a fully stocked kitchen. Colin fed him here and there, and there were plenty of great little restaurants scattered throughout the city. For simpler days though, ones where he didn't exactly feel like inviting social interaction, staples like peanut butter and jelly were in order. Or vegetables that could be thrown into a microwave. Cold cuts for sandwiches. Easy, quick things.

He was in the midst of a cereal dilemma when he heard a voice call out to him, and Lorne turned with his yellow eyes wide and more than a little confused. A bright red flush of color immediately spread across his face. "I-I'm sorry, " he sputtered out quietly, quickly, "I - I don't - " He felt bad at first; he didn't recognize this man at all. He had been away from the city for a few years now; if it was someone who remembered him from before, Lorne felt awful for forgetting them.

When it became apparent that wasn't the case, though, he relaxed a little. Although that didn't do anything for the redness in his face, he did smile; seemingly, the implication went right over his head, or else he just wasn't acknowledging it at all. "Ah, I - I see, you are a friend of Nadia's - it is a pleasure to meet you, then, " and he offered his hand without an ounce of hesitation.

Hurst didn't take Lorne's hand. Briefly green eyes flicked to it out of reflex, but the movement barely registered. His smile widened though, as Lorne just happened to give him a great opportunity for some play on words. Really. Some people almost made it too easy for him.

"Oh no, the pleasure was all mine when I had Nadia bent over various pieces of furniture at her place during your absence after she returned." He sighed, regretfully. "That came to an end when you returned as well. I miss how flexible that woman is. Did you?" Though his smile remained the same, there was something a tad more severe that gleamed in his eyes. He wanted to ******** with the man. From what he heard from Nadia, Lorne suffered from crippling self-esteem and confidence issues, part of which apparently lead to their fall out.

Hurst wanted to see if this man had any buttons he could press.

"I hope things are going well. Nadia told me it was something of a rocky start, you two getting back in touch after that long absence. Have you two managed to work something out?"

Lorne's hand dangled there for a moment longer than it should have, as if unsure whether or not Hurst would change his mind, his smile warm and unwavering up until those words left his mouth.

Then his hand dropped, and his gaze dropped with it, his face oddly pale despite the flush in his cheeks. "O-oh, " was all he could really muster, his chest tight and the air oppressive.

Nadia had a right to do what she wanted, he tried to remind himself, trying desperately to stave off hurt. He didn't have a right to be hurt when he was the one who'd stopped talking to her. She had every right to find someone else. He had thought all along that she would and she had and now here he was and it was fine only why didn't she tell him and he hadn't even thought about being with anyone else and -

Hurst was still talking, and Lorne was vaguely aware of it, although he didn't match the other man's gaze again. He didn't want to have this conversation right now. He didn't want to be here, he didn't - "I'm sorry, " and he didn't even know why he was apologizing, "but I - I don't f-feel much like - like talking right now, I - a-another time, maybe, " and he went to push his cart down towards the cashiers, putting some distance between himself and that moment.

"That's rude." Hurst's hand snapped out to lace fingers through the metal meshing of Lorne's shopping cart. He stopped it before the man could push it any further. Stopped Lorne before he could try to make a get away. "I asked you a question." He continued, his tone light, still, but he locked his gaze on the other man's face. "And we're having a conversation."

That was too easy to hit a nerve already.

"Maybe things haven't improved." The man mused. "I know a bit about you, from what I was told, and I can see right now your spine is still that same consistency as that jar of Smuckers right over there. If you're going to keep folding, Lorne, I'll be more than happy to pick up the slack."
