It was the sort of evening that was easy to get lost in. Peaceful, crickets and peepers singing in the trees and the underbrush lining the edges of the park. There wasn't much of a breeze, but it was still cool enough to be comfortable, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, so Jack had stayed out late with her camera.
One would have thought, though, after the last time she'd been out after dark in a similar park, she'd be a little more careful about her time management. She still remembered the giant spider that had chased her down, and how she likely wouldn't even still be here if it weren't for Altias swooping in to rescue her.
And very nearly dying himself.
But it was getting late, and Jack hadn't quite noticed how long the shadows were getting, or that the crickets were quite as loud now as they'd been a moment or two before.
She was too absorbed in the way the fading light reflected off the still water beside the lilies that were only just starting to close up for the night. Just a few more pictures and she'd get that perfect, dynamic shot.

It was a lonely night, depending on the type of person you were and considering the Medi was not quite a person anymore, it was like most other days.
Loneliness was a persisting idea that coiled around her as surely as the snakes coiled in her hair. She didn't even know if it was an emotion she could still feel or if it was a reminiscent 'feeling' left over from the days when she'd been more person than snake...creature...youma.
But it was not loneliness that brought her to the surface world, instead it was hunger and a desire to find a new dress for one of her recent toys. The etching on the walls of her cave had told her that another year had passed. If she could remember how hold she was then another year would have been ticked off.
Up ahead was a pretty girl, of which Medi stopped to admire before the rumbling of hunger, of desire for the thing housed in the girls chest had her slithering forward, creeping up from behind. As she grew closer the hungry snakes that made up her hair lifted, hissing in anticipation.

"Oh, that's a nice one..." she mused as she looked at the screen of the camera, admiring a particularly nice shot. With a smile she replaced the cap on the lens, and curled her fingers around the strap slung around her neck. Now she was noticing how dark it was, how quiet it was, and the soft smile faded as she recalled the last time she'd been out too late taking pictures.
"Should probably get home." Before something found her. Before she put her own life or anyone else's in danger again. She still had dreams about that giant spider and the way the blood had blossomed on Altias' shirt and spread long the dusty floor of that abandoned building. She didn't want to see that again. Didn't want to be the cause of it again. No, it was better to get home now, before anything lurking found her.
Except...it already had.
She only noticed the sound as she began to walk away from the pond; an odd, slithering sound like someone was dragging something large across the ground. It sent a chill up her spine, set the hairs on the back of her neck on end, and she didn't want to turn to see what was making that hissing noise behind her, but she did anyways.
And then, eyes gone wide with fear, the girl screamed before turning on her heel to run for the parking lot on the other side of the park.

Her snake-hair had lifted, spitting and hissing and trying to lash out at the potential snack despite Medi herself having seemed somewhat reluctant to move. Yet, she was still hungry and her instincts drove her more than anything else and she was reaching after the girl when she screamed.
Then she ran and with a heaved sigh, the youma was slithering after her, long tail and body allowing her to cover a fair amount of distance as she moved.
"Sssstop," she hissed, word tumbling from her lip before she could think of an alternative.
<Medusssssa ssssaysss ssstop> Came the chiming chorus of her snakes and, if the poor girl looked back, she might have been met with Medi's stone-eyed gaze.
Gorgon's Gaze: When she wills it, Medi's eyes can glaze over and, when this gaze meets directly with another's, it can temporarily paralyze her opponent/target in question for an upwards of 15 seconds, unless agreed otherwise.
Afterwards, her prey will slowly regain their motor abilities (albeit, they may be feeling a little stiff) and can escape.

What, Am I some sort of magnet for these damn things? And why was it just in the last couple of months?!
Jack sprinted towards the line of cars, her eyes on her curved hatchback of her own little Mini Cooper. If she could make it to her car, she could get out of there. But she could hear the dry hiss of that serpentine body speeding along on her heels. Gaining on her.
Looking back would prove a costly mistake, but that chorus of hisses lifted the hair on the back of her neck and she hadn't been able to keep herself from glancing back over her shoulder. Straight out of a textbook on mythology, and more horrifying in person than the gorgon had ever been in stories.
There was a glimpse of foggy white, and Jack stumbled forward as her legs completely ceased cooperating with her. As she fell, one hand on her camera and one out to protect herself from the hard ground, she remembered why you weren't supposed to look the monster in the eyes.
By the time she hit the ground she'd gone stiff.

"I've had it with these ********' youma in my ********' city!" Faust growled to himself his stumpy feline legs speeding along on pavement. Down one sidewalk, across the street, a quick sprint through an alley. Faust dipped under a well-worn barred gate, his a** just bumping the bottom rung, and squirmed out on the other side near enough to the action. Some girl was booking it from the aura he felt, then she looked back and tripped over her own two damn feet.
Two legs don't be good, Sugartits. Faust sprinted in her direction, lightly panting. The youma was almost upon her by feel — he couldn't see past the parked cars.
But he could get to the girl. Claws skidded to a stop on the pavement as he left his long, white, keratin-based tallies. "Yo, get up. We ain't got time for this s**t." Double puffy paws came down at her arm as he pushed on the girl relentlessly. "You pickin' up what I'm puttin' — aw, hell with it."
Abruptly, the cat drew golden slivers of energy into his forehead star, about-faced toward the youma, and fired off a liberal beam. He hadn't aimed well — he only wanted to hit any goddamn part of it — and he already felt his muscles slow down. They felt tired again, like he just ran half a mile.
"Can you stand?" He called over his shoulder. He bristled then, but only for a moment; a glimmer grew in his eyes.

Her features seemed torn. Her snakes were clearly pleased that the girl had fallen but something about the youma seemed unhappy that such a pretty thing was about to be erased from the world. Whatever it was washed away in the swirl of her hunger and her need to feed during her limited time on the surface world.
Lips parted and teeth flashed, Medi narrowing in on the girl when the cat came out of nowhere, springing into her line of vision with a string of words.
She only had a split second to blink, human hands lashing out while her snake half slithered forward to help, before the bright cat beam came shooting at her. The youma was fortunate that he hadn't aimed and it caught her on the shoulder instead of directly in the face.
Either way, it was enough to send her heavy body crashing into the parking lot pavement with an angry hiss and spitting snakes.
It took too long for her to pull herself up off the ground and her tail thrashed out wildly in what she thought was their direction.
"Pessst!"

Am I dreaming? The almost desperate thought flickered trough the girl's mind as she fought with her body to move. It seemed to her, despite the welling panic, that it would make a hell of a lot of sense if this were all just one big, weird dream. And not just this instance, but thing with the spider monster and the guy with the powers that'd swooped in to save her. She knew her city was weird, but was it really this weird?
And did that voice just come out of that cat?
A large, very fluffy, very gruff sounding cat was nudging her arm with his paw and talking to her in a voice that wasn't quite Samuel L. Jackson, but it bore a striking resemblance!
For a long moment she couldn't respond--couldn't move, even--but mobility returned bit by bit and by the time a beam of light had shot from the cat's head she could move her arms again, and had sat up to stare wide eyed at the fallen gorgon. "Y-yeah, I think so."
It wasn't exactly graceful, but she seemed to be in control of her body again once she had her feet beneath her where they belonged. Which was good, because had she not been able to back away quickly sh'd have taken a lashing tail to the midsection.
The cat was still in range, and Jack gasped as the monster's tail came within inches of black fluff. "Look out!" She shouted as she darted in to scoop the cat up before backing away again.

"Mrrf!" Faust leapt backwards, almost bouncing off the ground, and landed himself into the no-longer-stiff girl's arms. Faust was damn ready to wiggle out — he had a youma to kill — but he paused mid-squirm. Liquid!cat form was put away momentarily as he concentrated a second longer. They didn't have much time.
And hell if he was gonna waste it on dumbass explanations in the middle of battle. Whoever the hell she was, she had the potential. He could feel it, just like he felt indigestion when looking at that youma. Or maybe it was bad tuna. Whatever. Didn't matter. No time for that s**t.
"Imma give you somethin'. I want you to grab it, then shout 'Phoebe Power, Make-Up!' an' sound like you mean it." And we ain't got time for bitchin'. He wriggled and slipped from her arms, eyes ever on the youma, and even when he summoned the pen forth from the depths of CatLand™, his attention never left that beast. There was no knowing what it'd try next, or how fast it'd get back full range of motion after getting starseeded.
But it felt powerful. Probably would come back to it soon.
Faust finished digging at the ground in short order, litterbox strokes having pulled a pen out of nowhere. Faust always thought it looked kinda like a tampon, but he kicked it back at her anyway. She better not use it as a tampon, else the guardian would be sorely displeased.
He didn't trust that youma not to interrupt. "C'mon, over here!" Faust immediately darted right and scampered into one of the crooked, too-old alleys peppering the city. He spared a quick glance over his shoulder as he passed the first dumpster. "Get back here an' say what I told you to say!"

This was supposed to be easy and irritation was quickly bubbling in Medi's veins when the feline intruder had been swiped away from her lashing tail. Hunger was a curling motivator in her belly, the snakes in her hair spitting and hissing in rage as she slithered forward.
Her movements were far more sluggish than she should have liked, shoulder still stinging from where the catbeam had struck. Her wounded arm hung there, almost useless because the feeling hadn't quite come back yet.
But her prey was getting away from her and she simply couldn't have that.
They'd disappeared from her sight but she knew she'd find them if she just....kept...going.

This was all happening just a little too quickly. Jack's arms tightened on the cat as it stilled in her arms, feet still shuffling back away from the monster's thrashing tail, only for him to squirm free a moment later after giving her what she was sure should have been a very clear and simple order, but still managed not to be. "You want me to do what?"
It looked like he was digging at the ground, which seemed a strange thing to do now oh all times, but when he ceased there was something on the ground. He kicked it back at her, and she bent automatically to scoop it up. It looked like a pen. Like something out of a gift shop in some theme park. What I'm I supposed to do with this?
The cat darted, beckoning her to follow, and Jack hesitated only the briefest of seconds before sprinting after him. "Wait a minute!" Behind a dumpster, down an alley and he was shouting back at her again.
"I-" She bit off her own protests, lips pressing together as she looked down at the cat, to the pen, and then back again. "This is crazy." But even as she said it she was holding the pen out in front of her warily, as if expecting it to bite her. "Phoebe Power Make-Up!" That's not even my name, how...
All doubts faded as light and color shot from the pen in her hand to circle around her, and Jack could do nothing but ride it out until it faded. Then there, in her stead, a new senshi stood. "Oh wow..." She was staring down at herself in shock.

People had a helluva habit of blabbering on about how they didn't understand, or they were skeptical, or some s**t like that, when Faust didn't ask for any of that s**t. The hell did he care whether they understood or not, as long as they did it? And who the hell had the time to understand when they had a youma bearing down on their asses? They didn't question the damned youma, but hell if they're gonna follow the cat's orders — the cat that's trying to help their ungrateful asses!
Faust chuffed while the lightshow finally happened. That's why they couldn't stop to answer questions. How the ******** would she squeeze her transformation off when she'd be wasting all that time asking questions? She wouldn't, that's how. She'd get her face eaten by a snake youma before she could finish her transformation phrase.
But when she did, hot damn.
Faust didn't normally awaken ugly-a** senshi, he usually did pretty good for himself, but this b***h had it made. Like every other senshi uniform, it looked impractical as s**t, but she was a looker in this getup.
"Good, now listen up. We ain't got time for questions. That thing's gonna charge around the corner and try to ******** us up, but you're stronger now. Faster. And you got magic. So when that thing comes to get us, say…"
The cat licked his lips, thought about it for a minute, pulled a brain muscle in the process. "Euphoric Haze," he decided at last. Yep, that was it.

By the time that Medi had caught up with them, something had changed. She felt it before she'd seen it, a prickling on the back of her neck and a change in the hissing of the snakes that made up her hair.
<medussssa> they hissed in her ear, a warning she wasn't quick enough to receive.
Pale eyes narrowed, the edges of her mouth twisting upward into a snarl and the word was on the tip of her tongue but the youma swallowed it back down. The pesky cat, the very one she should have eaten first, had turned the simple snack into a magical girl.
"Pessst," she snarled, attention focused on the feline before it snapped back over to the girl, whom she lunged at, fangs bared and snakes snapping and hissing while attempting to take a bite.
Snake Bite: Along with her tangled mess of hair snakes, Medi can produce a venom from her fangs that, if injected in her bite, will cause a burning pain throughout the infected area. It's up to the player's discretion whether or not this pain is accompanied by nausea or other sickness brought on by the bite, but the duration of the venom's pain will last between 30-45 seconds.

Well, Doing as the cat commanded had proved beneficial up to this point so the girl really so no need to deviate from this particular behavior now. And really, at this point arguing would have been a little silly. She was being chased by a GD gorgon with literal snake hair, a cat had leaped heroically to her rescue and shot a friggin laser from his forehead, and that wasn't even the strangest thing to happen that night.
Phoebe nodded, lips pressing together in a thin, resolved line as she squared her shoulders and waited, but not without realizing she could now suddenly feel the darkness surging towards them. And isn't that just the weirdest feeling yet. Ugh! Useful though, she imagined.
Of course, even being able to feel the beasty it was still a shock when it rushed around the corner into the alley and Phoebe retreated a few steps on sheer instinct before forcibly stopping herself to face the thing that charged at her. "Euphoric-"
A little too slow, Phoebe felt the impact of the strike before the pain itself. It made her gasp, stumbling back and away as she slapped a hand over the now bleeding bite marks on her arm. s**t! Panic bubbled, a scream building at the base of her throat. Phoebe swallowed it back before shrieking. "Euphoric Haze!" It was high pitched and desperate, and she was startled by the handful of glittering dust that appeared for her before flinging it mindlessly at the youma in front of her.
Quote:
Euphoric Haze:
Calling the name of her attack creates a palm full of glittering, colorful dust that Phoebe then blows at, or throws at her target. Breathing in the dust will cause an immediate hallucinogenic effect that calms and mollifies the target, while making the colors around them seem brighter and more pronounced.
- Effects last for 30 seconds. - Area of effect is limited to 1.5 ft in front of Phoebe, and can only effect a max of 2 targets at this stage.

Faust leapt back with the charge, feet splayed and standing at the ready when he touched down on the ground. The position was a little more favorable, he realized, when he was looking straight at the youma's side. The damned thing was trying to eat his senshi's arm off, and Faust wasn't gonna have that.
"I had it with these ********' snakes on my ********' senshi!" Faust readied himself again, puffy a** wiggling to and fro in the air, until Phoebe called some s**t out and threw glitter at it. Not the most effective-looking thing he'd seen coming from a senshi, but he wasn't gonna knock it until he knew what it did. Not that there'd be any way for him to find out without diving his a** straight into the glitter cloud.
Instead, he stood by and waited to see the effects of the magic. "Yo, you ok?" He asked, not quite looking in her direction. It'd be a damn shame to take his eyes off the youma now, especially if they were waiting to see what happened.
Faust only hoped that magic had some useful effect, and not something weird and shitty like making it madder. Usually senshi magic wasn't that big of a pain in the a** for the caster.
