Dria was finishing her math homework when Dad and Drew came in. Dad looked intrigued. Drew looked… Well, Drew looked interesting. For one thing he was flushed, for another he was in shock and for a third, he was delighted with himself. Dria could read her twin very well. She had also noticed the sound of a motorcycle pulling up, which meant that Dad had allowed him to ride it home – which was not at all how it had been planned. It seemed Mom and Aunt Dia had noticed this as well, as they were heading over to talk with Dad with upset looks on their faces. Drew, on the other hand was heading for Dria.
She knew from the look on his face he wanted to talk with her. And that it was private. She found a stopping spot on her homework. Trig homework was so hard to find one on. She followed him out to the garage, where not one but two motorcycles and a sidecar sat. It was dark in the garage, as they hadn’t turned on the light, so she couldn’t see the colors or designs. Questions rattled around in her brain and the first one that popped out was, “How did you afford them?” He explained about the sale and that they’d been on the lot for quite some time, adding that multiple checks had been done to see that they were still in tiptop condition. The next question that popped out was, “Who are the other motorcycle and the sidecar for?” With a mischievous look, he replied, “For my dear sisters. And before you ask, why would I assume you would want them, take a look at them in the light.” Before she could say a word, he flipped the light switch on.
The bike sitting out on its own was obvious meant for Drew, not only had he ridden it, but it was white and had his golden quill on the gas tank. Over was obviously his motorcycle gear, gold and white. The trailer held her bike, and Dani’s sidecar and their gear. Her bike (and she knew was hers and this was why) was white with gold trim and had a blue lotus design on the gas tank. Her gear was white with gold and blue trimmings. Dani’s sidecar was gold and tan and had a cheetah design on it. Her gear was also gold and tan. Dria was in shock. “How?” “I dunno. They were just there. And nobody else wanted them – for three years.”
“What about insurance? Gas? I don’t know how to drive a motorcycle or have a license. Dani certainly doesn’t know how to ride a sidecar. And what if they need a mechanic? I don’t know Drew…” “Well, I have a job and that will pay for my insurance and gas. You’ll just have to do the same – get a job as an intern – that’ll make Mom and Dad happy too. That’ll pay for your insurance and gas. If there is any insurance for Dani, it’ll go on ours and we can pay for that. You’ll have to take motorcycle driving classes for a while till you get your license, and I’ll help you; Dani should be able to take a short sidecar basics class. Dad also said that he wants Dani doing most of our chores for about a year – to free us up for our classes, work, and school and to do her share for the sidecar. As for the mechanics, aren’t you taking that vehicular mechanics elective in school – you could educate the both of us, while you practice.” She thought about what he said. He had made some good arguments. And it was if the bikes and sidecar were waiting for them.
