If there was one person that wasn't family that Meadow had to pick to be stuck in a room with for the rest of her life, it would easily be Augustus. She had spent a lot more time with me recently and discovered that she cared a lot about him. He was really kind and fun to talk to. Not to mention, he could tell a darn good story! Today was all about him because today was his birthday!
Meadow had spent the last month or so preparing for this day and was relieved and even a little excited for it to be here. She had asked her best friend to meet her in the garden during lunch. Her mama and her made lunch for Augustus and herself before school that morning. She even brought a blanket for them to sit on like it was a picnic!
She set out the blanket then started to take the food out of her lunch boxes to set up for when Gus arrived. She then sat the two wrapped presents on the blanket and waited patiently for her friend. Meadow smiled softly as she looked at the little sandwiches and homemade chips that her mom helped her with. She then took one of the carrots and ate it while she waited. While she knew he'd enjoy what she did, she was still nervous that he might not.

As lunch time came, Augustus quickly slipped out of his seat and into the crowd moving towards the lunch room. Like most days he had packed his own bag, but his Mom had drawn a nice big heart on the front. Of course, this was for a reason. Today was his birthday! Happily the boy made way to the gardens, having long grown confident about not being caught being outside the lunch room. Meadow and him did it so often with no consequences.
"Meadow," he chirped happily as he saw his friend, dropping to his knees on the soft blanket. The litch boy ran his hands over it like he did with most things, enjoying the texture on his bony claws. "A-are these for me?" he asked, the child like part of him cutting to the chase as he pulled his lunch bag into his lap. The Freshling loved that his friend was so thoughtful; she was so good at finding fun things to do that interested both of them despite their different home lives. How she didn't have more friends was truly beyond him, but he was grateful to have her to himself most days.

Meadow smiled as she saw her friend, "Gus." She beamed another smile as he sat down. She wasn't one with much emotion but over time, Augustus changed that part of her... well at least for himself. The hybrid still didn't really fancy being around others. She noticed he had a lunch already, which didn't surprise her since his mom loved him a lot and would have obviously spoiled him today. The hybrid nodded to her friend, "Yep. Mama and I made you and I lunch." She told him, "I know your mom made you something too and that's okay." She reassured, grabbing a sandwich now that he was here. She was so hungry and lunch sounded delicious. "And of course the presents are for you too... It's your birthday." She smiled to him again before munching on her sandwich, swallowing before adding, "You can open them now if you want." She took another bite, watching to see what he would do.

He tilted his head some. "Your momma didn't have to make me lunch," the boy assured, but he was quietly tickled by the gesture since Meadow had clearly helped. He grabbed a chip between his claws, holding it up. "E-even this?" It did look nice like a hand fried chip.
He set the lunch his mom had packed him to the side, shrugging some. "She just gave me an extra dessert," he offered, Meadow's meal clearly more inviting. However, before the food Meadow was already nudging him to open gifts, and he nodded softly. "Thank you, Meadow," he murmured before even peeling off the wrapping.
Carefully he cut the edge of the tape with his claw, unfolding it like a precious bento box. Golden eyes wide, he popped the lid off of it carefully, not entirely sure what was inside the first box.

Meadow looked to her friend, "I asked my mama to help me..... I didn't bring a dessert though so it's good your mom packed you one." She told him, munching more on her delicious food. She nodded at the question about the chip. "Yup. Made everything... well, except the carrots." She finished her sandwich and started on a juice box. She watched anxiously as he slowly unwrapped the first gift. He wasn't sure he would even like it but she had made it just for him. It was a friendship bracelet that was mostly bright gold and regular gold with purple trimming. It happened to be the opposite of the one she started wearing today. Inside the box was also a handmade card; it had a drawn picture of Gus and Meadow on the front. On the inside, it said, To my most precius frand on his bifday, luv Meadow. Her papa didn't edit it at all, he thought it might mean more later on if he had chose to keep it. "I hope you like it... I made it for you." Meadow told him, showing him that one she had. "I made one like it so that I can think of you when I am not with you." She told him with a grin. The next gift was the one she spend the most time on and it was also the one that was hardest for her not to spoil before today. With help from Salem, she made him a good sized gold trimmed quilt. Each square was a fun day that Meadow had with Gus. The first one was the day she met him and the day they caught frogs was on there too! Each square was a moment that Meadow kept precious in her memories. She even hand stitched his name on it and even had the pin poke marks on her bony fingers to show for it.

Augustus was immediately flattered; the friendship bracelet was made from both a gold metallic floss (his favorite) and the same deep purple Meadow often adorned herself with. He ran his fingers down it carefully, trying not to snag it on his claws. "Someone needs to help me tie it," he informed excitedly. "These are our colors!"
Through excitement (and not malice), he let the bracelet drop into his lap to thumb through the card Meadow had made him. "Thank you," the boy stated sincerely, picking up the bracelet again before moving to the second gift.
This one confused him slightly, the box a bit more heavy. A first he thought the gift it's self was merely stuffing, but as he pulled more and more into his lap, Augustus had a moment of realization. "You made this too?" he asked a bit incredulous, immediately noticing the hand stitching. (In truth, even machine embroidery would have impressed him, but.) It took him much longer to digest what the scenes were, and as he read the tile with his name, tears welled up at the corners of his eyes. "F-for my bed?"

Meadow smiled, "I can tie it whenever you are ready." She told him, extremely pleased he had liked the bracelet. "It's a friendship bracelet so I made sure to make it in our colors." The hybrid was tickled by how much Augustus liked gold because it always went well with purple!
With anticipation, Meadow watched as Gus struggled to open the next gift. She observed the other as he inspected the quilt carefully. "Yeah, Papa help me and I used the sewing machine to put it together." She started to explain, "oh, I hand stitched your name though. I practiced it the best I could so it'd be perfect." She then moved to sit next to him, pointing at the squares. "For your bed. Now you can always have our adventures with you to give you good dreams." She pointed to the frog one, "remember when you caught those frogs!" She giggled, "that was a lot of fun."

He scooted over some to give Meadow ample room on the picnic blanket next to him. Sniffling some, he wiped his cheeks with the back of his hand. "Y-yeah, I remember the frogs," the boy murmured quietly, simply tickled to his core. Nodding sharply, he leaned over and gave his friend a two armed hug. "I'll put it on my bed tonight!"
Fishing around in his lap, he pulled out the bracelet again. "Here, help me?" the Litch asked softly, pulling up his sweater sleeve to expose his wrist.

Meadow smiled brightly to him, excited even outwardly that she had done well in getting her best and only friend the best gifts! She hugged Gus back, thoroughly enjoying the comfort and happiness it brought her. Being around Augustus made her so happy and like she was worthwhile, not that she really cared too much about that. The only person's opinion she would ever care about was his. She trusted and loved her friend with every fiber of her hybrid being. Pulling from the hug when he grabbed the bracelet. She carefully tied it onto his wrist and smiled again. "I am really happy you like everything. I thought you would." She told him, "Thank you for being my friend." She scooted closer to Gus and rested her head on his shoulder. "Wanna come over tonight?" Panda Moor You can do the finishing post with the scene sorta fading out?

"I like being your friend," Augustus assured, gently moving the bracelet on his wrist so it was twisted perfectly. The boy nodded gently, his long hair bouncing about. "I'll tell my dad, and I'll come over!"
Smiling, he pulled the quilt tight before reaching for the sandwich that was left for him. "Will your Mom make me some more yummy food for dinner?" he asked cutely, taking a rather large bite as he had been starving prior. Contently he passed Meadow his bag so she could distribute the contents, the pair having a small sliver of time before the school bell would ring and they would have to sneak back inside.
