Having a baby brother and sister sounded much more exciting when the idea was first pitched to her. After all, her sister was her closest friend for the longest time. Other than him, they don't talk about him. Most days playing with Momma made the day fun, her rocks helped! Daddy took some winning over but he taught her a lot about the alpaca.

There was always Corazon, but on her own playing with the older woman got boring. Well, looking at the new house her mother was helping to make perfect for their new friends, the little girl blinked as a smile grew. She wasn't alone anymore, there was someone her age to play with!

Skipping a trail to the new house she called, "Best! Best! Best-best!" Calling out with a typical lack of volume control, the mysterious child attempted to call her new friend out from wherever he was hiding. There was a whole ranch to show him and games to play! Best hiding places aside, couldn't make it too easy on him to find her.

User Image DYB was just finishing up his breakfast when he heard Pip outside, calling his nickname seemingly at the top of her voice. Bolting the very last of his food, he looked at Ros sitting across from him. Swallowing in a rush to avoid being rude, he opened his mouth to speak. But, before he could form any words, Ros smiled and nodded at the door.

Grinning, he leaped to his feet, placed his dirty dishes in the sink, ran around the table to give his mom a hug, then was out the door all in the span of about thirty seconds. "Pip! Pip! Pip-pip!" he called, parroting the way she'd been yelling for him before. "You're loud," he added with a laugh, running up to her.

Impishly Pip answered him, "Hearing check, your ears work!" Doctor Pip clapped her hands together following the declaration. Since the patient was well, it was time to play! One day her little siblings could play with them, til then she was so lucky to have friend her own size.

Zipping around him one turn she waved her hand over her shoulder towards the back of the houses, "C'mon, I gotta show you around. There are lots of cool places to 'plore!" Playfully sticking her tongue out a second before declaring, "and the second best places to show you!" Echoing the good natured promise form the first time they met. Cheat or letting him find his own best place? Either worked.

Corazon was on kid watch which meant no one was watching them. Big and responsible girl, she was glad not to have anyone voicing 'don't do that or this'.

"I think there'd be pretty big problems if I didn't hear you," DYB said with a snicker, turning in a circle as she zipped around him. Watching her wave vaguely over her shoulder, he stood on tiptoe to peer passed her in that general direction.

"Ok, let's go. But I'll still find the best places," he promised with playful menace, poking his tongue out back at her then waving his arm in a 'lead on' gesture. Noting that there didn't seem to be any adults around to supervise, he correctly guessed that Corazon was supposed to be watching them. She was never too interested in what they were doing, anyway, and didn't seem like the type to join in the fun. That was alright, though. Ros liked hearing about their adventures and he could show her all the neat things he saw while she told him what she'd learned about helping out around the ranch.

"Exactly, life would be boring if you couldn't" Cheeky declaration topped off with a chest puffed out in overly dramatic show of pride. The serious expression managed to stay in place for a full minute before she deflated with laughter. Giggle storm only ended with his own comment of best places. Was that a challenge? Oh that was a challenge!

Grinning deviously she challenged back, "Good luck with that!" By the time her poor little brother and sister could play she and DYB would be unstoppable! So much more fun than playing with Corazon. She never actually came looking once the hiding began and never hid well.

Where to start was easy, her fourth favorite place on the ranch! Giving a tap on DYB's shoulder she called out, "Race ya!" then took off as fast as her little legs could carry her. Unspoken rule of these games was followed, her dragonfly wings were tucked down and behaving.

The race ended at a cliff of sorts, behind the houses stood the best view on the ranch. Boarding the ocean on one side meant it was always there. Rolling waves, sounds of the water creates beyond her grasp. Temptation called with every wave to go play. Only that wasn't allowed.

Win or lose, she laughed whispily as her breath was caught hoping her friend was enjoying the view too. Rules first. "We are not allowed to play in the water." Eyes rolled as her head tilted that way explaining in an almost board tone, "Or chase the waves" With the words her eyes went up and her head followed, tone never changing "Or think about playing near the water without an adult." Once again her eyes and head moved this time to the left. Each word came out well practiced from repeating it over and over again.

There were loop holes, always loopholes "There are places where the water gathers after the waves go out. Thats not technically the ocean then... We can play in the sand, build castles and collect shells!" None of those things were on her list, yet.

Used to Pip's tendency to 'race' him everywhere, DYB took off less than a second after the words were out of her mouth but trailed her by about half a step. She was the only one who knew the destination after all. Even so, he followed the unspoken rules of racing, tucking his wings so he wouldn't be tempted to use them.

Content to let her win, he came to stop next to her at the drop-off and looked out over the ocean. Listening to Pip's explanation of ranch rules with only half an ear, he found himself vaguely recalling a time when Ros had stopped him from crawling into the water when he was much smaller. He had watched a strange-looking male pae come walking onto the sand with a spear in hand...

Shaking the blurry memory off, he checked back into the conversation with Pip. As a child pae himself, he was aware of loopholes in the rules and how to take advantage of technicalities. "So the beach is okay as long as we don't get too close to the water. And tide pools, too, when the water's out?" he asked, making a note to tell Ros about the beach. Maybe she could convince the other adults to go on a day trip at some point.

Nodding with gusto, Pip backed up the act with a verbal "Yep! It is a lot of fun to build and play." Even better if Corazon was 'watching' them. Not that either of the needed watching, rules were easy to remember. Speaking of that, on to the next one! Walking around Do Your Best, Pip encouraged him, "C'mon! There is more to see! I'll show you the Marsh next." Second biggest list of rules came from that place. If it wasn't for Asrun and some of the treats it would be enough to leave the area alone.

Skipping a few steps along the cliff to the beach, the child turned around with her hands behind her back smiling brightly. Zofie's house stood to the south of them, the ocean to the North. Her steps took her west away from the alpaca pastures to the East.

DYB managed to tear his eyes away from the sand and sea, transferring his gaze to Pip and watching her as she walked around him. Turning with her, he took a few leisurely steps to match her skipping ones then stopped in front of her and asked curiously, "The Marsh?"

Realizing that she probably intended to give him a broad look at the place, he was struck by the sheer scope of the Ranch and he wondered just how much there was to see. Making shooing motions at her to continue with the tour, he fell in beside her and attempted to look everywhere at once.

Happily, Pip continued to skip along until the cliff ended in a waterfall into the ocean, from there she went 'up stream' to the wide marsh, on the other side a foreboding forest. Coming along the marsh's edge to about where Asrune could sometimes be found, the child stopped and proudly proclaimed, "The Marsh~" There wasn't a lot to be said for the area itself, teaming with life buzzing above and swimming below the murky water. The other side held curiosity but enough self preservation that even she didn't dare.

Pointing to the forest Pip remarked in a uncharacteristically serious tone, "That is the bad place, bad forest. No going near it or touching anything that comes out it." The lectures, oh the lectures that forest caused. Even looking at it seemed to be enough for one of the adults to talk to her about it for the millionth time.

In an fit of rebellion she stuck her tongue out at the forest. Showing it whats what! Temporary marking of a mean expression faded as she waved to the water itself, and towards the pae under, "Ms. Asrune is down there, she has a tail like a fishie! But she can come on land and walk with feets!" Raising her own foot she wiggled the appendage for emphases. It was the strangest but coolest thing ever.

"She is really nice, doesn't seem to like Allie'oki much but she likes me!" The child brightly cheered her assessment of the situation. "She might not come out now, but she is there. We can catch fishes and play with the reeds!" The forest unnerved her enough that this was a little visited place, would be less so if it weren't for the pae she knew to be there.

DYB dutifully followed Pip to the edge of the marsh and came up to stand next to her, listening solemnly when she explained about the forest and its extra precautionary rules. Judging by the look of the place, he quite agreed that it was probably for the best to avoid going anywhere near it.

When she stuck her tongue out at it in a show of pique, he smiled but shook a fist at the trees out of solidarity for his friend. He didn't say anything while she talked about her other friends, mostly because he didn't recognize any of the names and partly because the mention of fish tails turning into legs niggled again at his memory. Chalking it up to just something from 'before', he waited until he was sure Pip had nothing else to add before he asked, "D'you wanna keep goin' then? Or should we head back for foods?"

No telling how long she would have waited there had DYB not asked about food. Thoroughly distracted, the child cheerfully waved to the water before turning on her heels. "Lunch is a great plan! Then we can play with the alpaca! My Daddy and Allie'oki work with them!" She'd been told Corazon helped with the mules but seeing that was the only way she'd believe it!

Waving her hand to spur her friend along she cheered, "Ms. Zofie makes the best foods, lets see what she has!" Not in all her memories of this place had there not been tasty food waiting for her in that home. Great food, hugs and a comfy place to take a nap in between mischief!

Happily, the child started running towards the home expecting her friend to follow along.

Pip was already running before he could even think of any responses that would communicate his own very strong approval of these plans so he simply turned on his heel and took off after her. Unlike Pip, DYB wasn't quite as used to sprinting everywhere so it took him a little while to catch up. But he was also very determined to do his best in everything and managed to put on a little burst of speed at the end, drawing even with his friend. Setting his pace to match hers, he zoomed along next to her to Ms. Zofie's, gleefully thinking with his stomach the whole time about lunch.

DYB caught up with her! Cheering for her friend, Pip lost just enough speed that both of their feet hit the finish line she just decided at the same time. "No more easy races for me!" Her breath came in shorter pants but her smile challenged that assessment.

Turning to the house, she patted the door with her hands before putting her little wings to the test. Fluttering up just high enough, Pip was able to get to the door knob and get the door open. Those things were made for big pae, but they could make it work anyway!

True to Pip's promise, the smells of a harty stew and fresh baked bread wafted out.

From inside Zofie chuckled stating, "I was just about to call you, take a seat lunch is served." On the table were cups of water with another filled with cooled juice. The angle plated a tot sized helping of the thick stew with riced coconut and cut up carrots. Warm slice of bread finished off the plate.

Used to this particular method of opening big paeple doors, DYB stood back and let her take care of it, but remained near enough that if she lost her lift he could help cushion the fall. His precautions weren't entirely necessary, but better to be safe than sorry like Ros had taught him. Scooting in after Pip, DYB carefully shut the door behind them, waved to Ms. Zofie, then moved to wash and dry his hands before politely taking a seat.

"Thank you, thank you Ms. Zofie. It smells so good my mouth is watering!" he exclaimed with delight even as his stomach added its two cents with a loud grumble. With a supreme effort of will, he stopped himself from diving right in and scarfing down the lot of it.

Pip skipped along a step behind DYB. After her own hands were washed and dried off, she joined him at the table. Reaching out she grabbed a cup and sipped on the mango juice.

With an exaggerated "ahhh" sound she put her cup down grinning with an orange mustache.

"Thank you Ms. Zofie!" Holding her spoon she looked back up to DYB. raising a spoon with a bit of food on it like she was doing a 'cheers'. "It will be " Zofie's cooking was always amazing, this would be his first of many meals here.

What do you say about them getting a good meal and taking an unintentional nap to end this one?
