(Back dating this a bit...like start of April, lol.)
The trip to South Korea had been sudden and rather unexpected. The call had been in the middle of the night, for them, telling Terry and himself that they had the final approval for the adoption that they’d been waiting on. They should make their way to South Korea as soon as they could so the final paperwork could be finished and they could then bring the little ones home with them, yes little ones as in the plural.
The children were in Busan, which was one of the places Seung had been most interested in adopting from, being that part of his family was from there. Their case worker seemed adamant and so after hanging up with her, sleep abandoned for the night, Seung had worked to book himself and Terry a flight to Seoul and train tickets to Busan from there. They also needed train tickets from Incheon to Seoul. All of it was done before the sun rose that morning.
Honestly, looking back on it Seung wasn’t sure how he’d managed to accomplish it, he really wasn’t. It was more than he’d thought himself capable of, and not due to his own abilities but due to booking all the tickets plus the hotel to stay in. The short notice hadn’t hindered them however, nor the frantic rate at which he’d done all these late night things. Quinn, understandably, had accepted that Seung was going to have to leave for Korea and with little notice. After explaining things to him, while he and Terry had been having a fast breakfast, Quinn had understood and given him the time off he needed for the trip.
The orphanage in Busan had been small, discrete, and near enough to the sea that they could smell the salt water of the from the ocean. The twins had been perfect, though their story wasn’t so perfect, but the twins had not been what he and Terry had originally planned on. It had sort of just...happened, not that he was about to complain about it. The twins had just sort of just gotten to them, he wasn’t sure who they’d gotten to more either, and to know that they had been approved had set the mood for the whole trip.
The trip, long as it was, had been good though tiring. The time on the plane had been spent sleeping, as they weren’t likely to get any on the trains or on the way to the orphanage to finish the final paperwork which would be filed.
The paperwork had been...expected though not as much as he’d thought it would be, it wasn’t as bad as he’d assumed it would be.
The call from the social worker had understandably lead to no more sleep that night as Terry had been too excited. It had worked out however as while Seung was getting things booked for them to go and pick up their new sons, he had taken the time to pack everything they would need for the trip. Clothes, beauty products, toiletries, electronics that they would be taking, important documents. And something rather important, the twins first gifts from the family. Of course he left out things that would been needed just before they left but that stuff was easily packed into a smaller bag before they left. Once he was done with that he made sure to let the rest of the family know what was going on once it wasn’t in the middle of the night.
Thankfully they had plenty of time to catch up on sleep on the trip on the plane but time still seemed to pass slowly as they travelled the thousands of miles to reach their destination. Once they were there, neither Seung nor Terry did more then check into the hotel booked so they could drop their stuff off before heading over to do the paperwork to finalize everything. What seemed like hours later they were finally ready to once again meet up with the twins, this time though they would be officially their parents. “Ready for this?” Terry asked Seung with a smile as they waited in the room where the twins would be brought to them after they had the few things they were given packed.
Looking over to his partner he nodded his head. “Would like to be more ready but don’t think I can be.” How does one prepare for something like this? Meeting your children for the first time...or at least for the first time as their parents. After the long wait, all the paperwork, and all the time...it was worth it though, he wouldn’t trade any of it away or undo any of it. “Can’t wait to get them home. First shopping here though.” So they could treat them to some things from here which they could bring back, they’d have to ship a lot of things, but it would give them a sense of being home even from a distance. It was a comfort thing, something Seung understood very well.
“Grocery store and clothing. I sent them winter coats earlier in the season.” Since it got very cold in Korea and Busan, being by the ocean, was prone to being bone chilling cold in the winter. He hoped the coats had been well received by the boys.
“We can have dinner out tonight. A proper meal.” Something they’d likely never had in their life. A family meal, never mind the fact it would be a meal out.
“This is all ok?” He asked, doubting Terry would deny the twins anything. His suggestions were good, it was why the hotel room for himself and Terry and one for the twins. It would allow them the time for the shopping and dinner out. Seung wanted to bring bits of Korea home with them….let them indulge a bit in things they’d never had but may have always wanted.
Terry nodded, not at all surprised that Seung wanted to go shopping here for things. It would be hard enough on the boys to move to a new country, it only made sense that they should get some things that would be mostly familiar. As it was, neither of the boys had much to their names anyway, though they had received a few gifts from Seung and himself before now. “That sounds lovely, though we might want to at least get something before then seeing how neither of us has had anything substantial for a while and the boys might be hungry before we go shopping.”
He gave his husband another smile and took his hand to give it a light squeeze. Of course he wouldn’t deny the boys this, nor would he ever want to as it would be for all of them and the twins deserved to be spoiled. “We have a few days to shop around anyway, we have to wait until the paperwork is completely filed and we are given the go ahead to leave the country with them anyway.” The paperwork in question included the twins brand new passports so they could do so after all.
“That’s true...street food or a restaurant?” He questioned his partner. Either option being viable, the street food was good in Korea, and varied. “Fish market also.” That was an option, given where they were. It was a very big option and he didn’t mind, though sometimes the smell could get to a person. The fish market was not just a place to purchase seafood but you could also get it cooked there, which was always good.
“Dinner then in Seoul?” He asked then, since their hotel was in Seoul and not Busan. There were more food options in Seoul, at least in his opinion.
“Mmm, it means we can send home a lot of things.” Most of it would be shipped, and would take a few weeks to arrive, but it was worth it since it would make the twins happy. He’d planned on that, them having several days to shop for the twins. “I have to stop in with the office in Seoul as well - check on everyone.” Since Quinn had put him in charge of the Seoul office they had, as Quinn was now running things. “I think one of the nights I will take everyone out to dinner.” As was proper to do in Korea. A night out every so often with all the workers was a way to bond and talk, to discuss things, and he was hoping to do just that. To get more feedback from them all.
Turning to face the door in front of them as he heard heels clicking and heading their way, so close, he hoped the door would open and the boys would be there. He hadn’t seen them in a while - he was excited and nervous.
Terry hummed in thought as he weighed the pros and cons of street food versus a restaurant. Either way would work and there were plenty of filling and healthy options for both, though he did discount the fish market for now as he didn’t think any of them particularly wanted that smell to linger around them for a while on their first day as a family. “How about street food? It’s something they won’t be getting once we get back to the States so they might as well have some now, and this way we all could try different things?” He finally suggested with a small shrug and a smile. The brunette then nodded in agreement to the dinner plan, they could figure out where they wanted to go once they were in Seoul but better to plan to actually have it there before hand.
“That sounds like fine plans to me. I can keep the boys occupied when you work as well since I don’t think they would necessarily be enthused about waiting around for you to finish.” Terry might have continued their discussion of plans, or might have changed the subject it was still undecided, but before anything else could be said the door started to open and Terry’s attention snapped to it. He squeezed Seung’s hand again as the anticipation rose. Finally, finally, the door opened all the way and there the twins stood with one of the lady workers.
“Sounds good, works for me.” That had been one thing he’d missed when arriving in Destiny city - street food. There was always good street food in Korea and he’d grown up able to go shopping and have lunch on the go in the form of street food. It was healthy, or as healthy as you could get, and it wasn’t like a cheap hotdog boiled in water. It was much more filling and better in general. He’d missed street food, a lot, and every time he came back to Korea he found time to eat the street food. The first time, with Terry, had been fun as he’d tried shoving everything at the other to try.
“No, they wouldn’t. You know enough Korean to manage too.” Terry had learned over time, he was proud of it, they had crossed the language barrier together and it worked. His English was still accented, and likely always would be, but it was there. Seung might have suggested some ideas to Terry, things he might want to do with the boys while he worked, but instead he was opening his arms to the twins as he motioned them forward. Wanting the two in his and Terry’s arms. He really couldn’t believe he finally had them here, even as he watched the two approaching.
“You liked the winter coats?” He asked, noting that the two were in fact wearing them. Smiling as one of them nodded, both twins thanking them. “I’m glad they could keep you both warm.” Having shifted to Korean for their sake he was happy when he was able to draw one of them into his arms to hug. Wait till they got home….they had nice warm bedding waiting for them, as it was still chilly in Destiny City. His cousin, Hyeon, was hopefully working on preparing the final needs for the twins back home.
The fact that he knew enough Korean to actually communicate with his new sons was something that Terry was very, very grateful for. Sure he still had a long way to go before he was fluent completely but he had certainly made strides so he didn’t have to rely on Seung to translate every little thing for him any more. This was something that was even more prevalent when their attention turned to the twins and the conversation switched to Korean so the two eight year olds would actually understand what was being said.
While Seung drew one into a hug, Terry pulled the other twin into his own arms for a cuddle and a smile. “Are you both ready to go? We have a few surprises for you waiting back at the hotel and a few treats planned for the rest of the day.” He asked, his smile turning into a grin as the twin in his arms perked up in interest, sharing a look with his brother in excitement.
“It seems like it.” He added, smiling at his husband. The twin in his arm, he honestly wasn’t sure which one, was smiling brightly to their other half who was in Terry’s arms. “I think we should get going. We have a lot planned.” And he figured it would tire them out, which would make sleep easy for them tonight.
That was something he should talk to Terry about, in private, sleeping back home and leaving their bedroom door unlocked so the twins could come into the bedroom. He knew they might come in for a while, seeking comfort, so they would need to watch themselves. It would be rather uncomfortable if one, or both, of the twins came into their room to sleep with them and he and Terry either were rather...occupied in each other or they were sleeping naked. Yes, this was something to talk about tonight once the twins were asleep in their hotel room. It would also be good to give them a spare key to their room tonight.
“I’ll drive.” Smiling to his husband. “Let’s go boys.”
Terry nodded to his husband and grasped one of the twin’s hands, He wasn’t completely sure which one was which just yet but he thought he might be leading DaeSu while GeonSu was by Seung. The both of them would certainly have to work hard to quickly get used to just who was who to be able to tell their new sons apart. “I’m glad you plan on driving, I’m still not used to how people drive in this country.” He said with a grin over at Seung then glanced back down at the boys. It was very likely he wouldn’t ever get used to how unsafe the roads were in South Korea, and while he didn’t enjoy it when Seung drove crazy asn had worked hard to get him to drive safely back in the states, he could easily admit that Seung’s reflexes would be better while here.
He made sure to thank the worker as they pass by on the way out, and paused just long enough for the boys to look back at their previous home to say goodbye, though it was obvious at least the twin he was leading was more than a little gleeful about it and not sad in the least.
“You remember how I first drove…” He said, knowing Terry remembered. “That is how.” It wasn’t the safest but it was better than he’d heard same countries were. Not that it was safe, he’d admit to that, but he remembered how to drive here and would manage get them safely to the hotel where they were staying for now.
With one of his sons held in his own, he wasn’t sure which one it was, Seung followed at Terry’s side. Smiling down at the two eight year olds, it really was hard to believe they’d managed to get through all of this and got to this point. It had been a long road, if you started with when he and Terry had met, but it was more than worth it. To be here with two children and knowing they’d be heading back to Destiny city together soon, as a family, it had all been worth it.
Pausing, as Terry did, he let the one holding his hand look back at the building they were leaving. This had been home to them since they were days old and now they were leaving. They seemed happy, though the one in his hand seemed either sad or nervous as well, they didn’t mind following them to the waiting rental car.
“Time to start a new journey - together.” As a family, he almost couldn’t wait to get home to Destiny city just so the twins could meet the rest of their family and so they could see what had been prepared for them. Nothing had just been bought without reason, or thrown together, everything had been picked thoughtfully and hoping to appeal to the twins.
Reaching the car, still thinking about the time spent preparing for this, he unlocked the doors and helped the one holding his hand into the back seat. “Buckle up.”
“Oh I very much know how they drive, just not used to having to deal with it.” Not to say everyone drove safely in the States but it was vastly better then here in South Korea. Terry looked over at Seung and gave him a loving look. “Yes, together as a family, always.” He agreed, giving the twin’s hand a gentle squeeze. Soon enough they would be back home and the twin will get all the love they could ever want, but for now they had some quality time to spend with them just the four of them. He helped the twin put their bags in the trunk, waiting until they were safely in the car then joined them himself.
