Zach hadn’t been that terrified in a very long time; not since Scythe McAsshole decided to bring half the damn Rift’s youma up through a power plant in the city and Zach thought himself, Denebola and his sister all dead. He’d broken his arm and bruised some ribs, landing himself in the hospital. Back then, he feared mostly for himself. Now?
Now he feared for a particularly lovely young blonde woman who had taken a liking to him and his blabbering cat companion.
Whatever song the monument had sung to the city to draw in its victims, Zachary Calloway had managed to sleep right through it. One night in a string of three consisting of late-night computations and caffeine crashes rendered him dead to the world for a good nine hours straight. Melody and Itsuki weren’t so lucky, having come out alive, but not unscathed. When Melody called him that night, Zach felt all the blood drain from his body. Why hadn’t he been there? Why didn’t he wake up? Why couldn’t he protect them?!
When they huddled in his bed for the night and Zach pleaded with his father to allow her to stay, there was pure and unadulterated fear and concern for their safety. Zach’s father allowed it, believing in the terror plain as day in his son’s eyes. Whatever happened to Melody, Zach was terrified of it happening again, or worse.
After that night, and after many apologies for the rather bachelor state of his room (which Itsuki teased him about), Melody went home. It wasn’t odd to see her the next day (and Zach never turned her down unless something big with school or Miss Chamberlyn came up), but what was odd was Melody’s insistence in meeting in the park at 11 o’clock that day.
We need to talk, she texted.
That’s when Zach thought the world might be ending.
Itsuki chose to stay with Melody, on the grounds of keeping her safe by keeping a close eye on things while Zach finished up a take-home exam he was assigned. As much as the Calloway boy protested -- someone needed to be there to keep her safe, after all, and why not another senshi? -- Melody insisted she was fine. She would bring him to the park during the meeting.
The entire walk to the park, the boy’s mind was flooded with possibilities - all of them terrible. We need to talk was code for you’re in deep s**t, which could also mean, I’m breaking up with you or I’ve decided to see someone else or I’m corrupting into the Negaverse and then moving to France, also ******** you. In any case, Zach had worked himself into an anxious lather by the time he made it to the fountain designated as the meeting spot. Pacing, he tried to rehearse pleading his case before the blonde in the hopes that she wouldn’t leave him.
”I know I messed up real bad and my room was real crappy but you know I’d never just not be there for you and---”

Perhaps she should have given Zachary more information instead of something so... Ominous? Final? Her mind had been a whirlwind of thoughts, plans, worries of her own she hadn't thought to not be so formal. It didn't help that her own stomach was a tangle of knots at the idea she wanted to propose to him. And such a limited time to talk, she had work and still had needed to get her hair taken care of and run by her house to grab everything for the day, on top of actual clothes and not something more pajama like. By the time she and Itsuki had managed to make it to the park where no doubt Zach was waiting already, she was running late and trying to figure out exactly what and how to say everything she wanted. And upon seeing him pacing, clearly worried, everything vanished. "Zach~" she called out, making her way to him with the biggest of smiles and as much comfort in her words as possible. It wasn't hard to tell he was worried, though whether it was still in regards to the event the night before or because of her text she wasn't sure. But she was going to do her best to soothe it no matter the cause. "Thank you for agreeing to this at such short notice. I know I was insistant on time but I had too much to and I still have to go to work so time isn't as available as I'd like for this."

Seeing Melody happy and smiling confused more than relieved the young man with charcoal hair. Zach had nearly paced a groove in the stone surrounding the fountain before the blonde arrived, cat companion in his harness and leash. Itsuki seemed happy, but when wasn’t he? Wrapping toned arms around her, Zach leaned over and sighed deeply into Melody’s hair. It smelled of her sakura shampoo. Maybe she always smelled of warm flowers? “Mel… just… you’re not breakin’ up with me, are you? If you are… please at least lemme make it up to you! Gimme a chance to fix whatever it is I screwed up… If this is about that weird tower thing then I can’t explain how sorry I am to not have been there for you--” Itsuki, for what it was worth, sat near Melody’s feet and blew a raspberry up at his senshi. The cat was much too small to be intimidating, so Itsuki settled for annoyingly cute most of the time. “Zee-chan, let Melody-san finish~” teased the lilac point. If Zach had his wits about him, the two would have gotten into a raspberry blowing contest in short order. Pulling away from the blonde, Zach tried to give her some space (and do some deep-breathing exercises for anxiety relief). “Y-yeah. Yeah… you’re right, you’re right. Sorry, Mel. I just… am beatin’ myself up about the whole tower thing, not bein’ there for you ‘n the furball. You sleep okay? Look, I know my room was kinda messy and exams ain’t an excuse, an’--” ”Zee-chan.” scolded the cat.

When Zachary wrapped his arms around her, effectively pulling her closer as he leaned over her, Melody couldn't help but blush. The color darkening even more at the feel of his breath in her hair as he sighed. He almost seemed like he'd managed to calm himself of his worry and she almost relaxed a bit as her hands moved to press light touches of her fingers against his arms. Well until he started rambling on and she was a little too stunned by the first question out of his mouth to really focus on anything else. He... thought she wanted to break up with him? Anger and shame in regards to herself burned in her stomach her mind focused in on that one question, already thinking back to what could have caused him such a worrisome thought. How could she have made him worry about such things? Sure they spent such little time together because of their own lives going on outside of dating between them both working and his going to school; not to mention they were both still dealing with the emotional backlash of the whole circus thing and then this monument thing happened and- It took too much out of her to make sure she didn't get upset at herself to the point of crying, trying to focus on the facts at hand. Which was that Zach had worked himself up into a tizzy thinking she wanted to break it off with him when really it was the opposite. She wanted to move things a bit further with him! Granted she'd really only talked to Itsuki about the idea because he spent a lot of time with her while Zach was so busy and maybe she should have talked to him about it too? Though that was why she had wanted to meet him here, so she could toss the idea out at him. Itsuki's teasing of his senshi and the raspberry blown up to him brought her back, brown eyes glancing down to the lilac cat then to her boyfriend who was still panicking even if it was only under the surface. "Oh Zach, I'm so sorry," she sighed softly, giving him a smile that seemed a little more sad then comforting as she pulled him back to her. "You goof, I didn't ask you out here to break up with you." Slender arms wrapped around his waist, brown eyes looked up at him with a bright smile. "In fact it's kind of a little the opposite? I know we've both been super busy and things have been... difficult between our jobs and your schooling... among other things. And I'd been doing a lot of thinking since you and Lil and Khaleel went home after the circus and last night with the monument was just kind of the straw that broke the camel's back you know?" Okay so now it was her turn to babble it seemed and with it all on the table like that maybe she could kind of see how he might have thought breaking up was in the plan. Not that it was and even if it was, it certainly wasn't going to be because of the state of his room or the fact that he hadn't been there during the monument thing. Pulling back some, she let out a small and nervous chuckle. "Ah, I guess that really doesn't help with you thinking I'm breaking up with you. Which I assure you that I'm not. Because really why would I want to ask you to move into an apartment with me if I wanted to break up with you? That seems a little cruel if you think about it." Maybe under the right circumstances she could be but really Melody was far too kind to be that sort of cruel. "Of course you don't have to say yes, I've decided to move out of my parents place regardless of the answer. But I figured I should ask and see if you wouldn't want to live with me. At the very least we'd get to see each other more."

Another raspberry followed Melody’s explanation, as Itsuki had known the entire way to the park and enjoyed teasing Zach for getting himself so worked up. Fiona’s love and guidance had done wonders for Zach’s self-esteem, but he still worried about messing things up with the blonde woman of his dreams. Perhaps that was where the fear had been birthed, and it was here, at the fountain, where the fear had been put to rest. Brown eyes gazed into Melody’s, almost unable to comprehend her offer. Move in together? As in… sharing a living space? Being around each other more? Watching movies together, curled up on the couch? Grocery shopping together, decorating together? The Calloway boy had to stop himself for a moment. His head was swirling with all those possibilities, far beyond the usual teenage desires for rebellion and alcohol and promiscuousness. Oddly, ever since he and Melody decided to try this whole relationship dynamic, Zach found himself slowly changing without realizing it. He was twenty years old now, no longer a teenager. He had graduated high school and, with some help, managed to get accepted into Destiny City University’s business accounting programs. He wasn’t drinking, he wasn’t smoking or sneaking out at night to partake in less wholesome activities (unless being a senshi counted, but Zach definitely believed he was trying to do the right thing). Melody’s influence had changed his life in ways Zach was only just beginning to understand. Now, he was choosing healthier food options, exercising more, taking to studying instead of binging hours on video games or YouTube. Even Itsuki noticed. He wondered… if this was the beginnings of the manhood he’d been so desperate to find? Shaking his head to steady his thoughts, Zach nervously shifted his weight while trying to form sentences in coherent English. “...r-really? Mel, you wanna… you want me to live with you? I mean---yeah! Uh… yes, I’d… I’d really like that. If you don’t mind, that is! I mean, I’ll clean up better, I swear to god. But, I mean… we could see each other more! I know school’s been real rough lately an’ all that but…” Both were prone to babbling, it seemed. With a nervous chuckle, Zach scratched the back of his neck. “What I mean to say is… yeah. Yeah, I’d… I’d love that. Really.” Then it was the cat’s turn to pipe up, tittering and chirping while weaving himself between Melody’s legs. “Hai! This means more snuggle time~ I for one think this is the best idea ever~ Oto-san and Oka-san, under one roof! What could be better? Probably free sushi for life, but this is pretty good, don’t you think~?” “When? I mean, I don’t have much, which… doesn’t really bother me. I could donate my old bed cuz… that thing’s been with me for like ten years and…” Wait a minute. Zach was making assumptions and blushed fiercely when he realized it. “I MEAN, I’m not like, saying we gotta share a bedroom or nothin’ if you don’t wanna--!” “But how will I get double snuggles then, Zee-chan?” ”Itsuki, this is not about you right now.”Another raspberry followed. “Zee-chan, cuddles are important~!”

There was so much to unpack with all of this between their own feelings, their own struggles, and how much it seemed they both needed each other. Not that they were good at actually saying anything about it but they were taking steps in the right direction. And this seemed to be a very good step forward. "Breathe," she replied with a smile. "And relax. We have some time to talk things out, okay? It's not like I've even have an apartment for us yet." Brushing a hand down his arm, she smiled to him before moving to the fountain to sit. Thankfully she had a little bit of time for them to talk some things out and hopefully get a better idea of what she needed to look for in an apartment. Either way a two bedroom apartment was needed of that she was sure. "Honestly... I... think I wouldn't mind sharing a room and a bed with you. After the last couple of times I'm pretty sure you'll keep your hands to yourself." A teasing laugh. "Honestly, I'm kind of attached to the idea of getting snuggle with both of you and it's easiest to do that if we share a room." A dark flush and a brilliant smile. "I was thinking of getting a new mattress for us, mine's pretty old too. And do you have any preferences for furniture?" Hopefully her questions weren't too much for him too soon. "Also don't worry Itsuki, you'll get plenty of snuggles no matter what."

Without hesitation, Zach almost floated to the fountain's edge to sit beside his girlfriend. The girlfriend who broached the subject of moving in together - something Zach had only really fantasized about. He was remarkably innocent about the whole fantasizing about living with your girlfriend idea, thinking of the time they'd be able to spend together, movie nights, video games, trying to cook dinners (as Zach wasn't the best cook), seeing how Mel would decorate... In the past, the woman of his dreams was an amorphous being, shifting and changing as Zach himself grew in age and his tastes changed. The dream girl of his young teen years was vastly different than the dream girl sitting right beside him. This dream girl had something above and beyond all the others. She was real. "Yeah, you're right... there's still plenty of time, but... Mel, I'm glad it wasn't what I thought it was." Swallowing the anxiety that had built firmly in his chest, Zach inadvertently began to take mental inventory of the items in his room. The laptop would definitely go, the desk was decent at best but could be made use of for the time being. His dresser would need replacing as he'd had it since childhood and the thing looked worse for the wear, and his bed would have to be donated at this point. It was too old and too small to do them much good. Maybe a charity could take the frame? Zach would understand not taking the mattress, as there was always the threat of bedbugs no matter how clean you professed your house to be... Itsuki must have noticed Zach dipping into contemplation and hopped up onto Melody's lap to annoy him. "Zee-chan~ Did you hear that? Double snuggles!" Zach snapped out of his mental list-making. "Uh... yeah, look, I promise no funny business." Unless you want some funny business, but Fuzz Bucket can't be audience, was what Zach had wanted to say, but he bit his tongue. He had to focus on the wholesome aspects of this proposed venture. "Honestly, like... as long as the furniture doesn't break when I sit on it, I'm good with whatever?" Itsuki made himself comfortable, turning into a fluffy loaf of a cat on Melody's lap. "I'd like the cat hammock to go with us! And the mini fridge! That's where I keep my sushi, Melody-san. Zee-chan keeps it under his desk."

Watching him move to join her, Melody could only smile that same sweet smile he brought to her face always. He was absolutely precious and he was his and- And there was just so much he made her feel, both emotionally and about herself. She could only hope that this would further those feelings, cement them. Zach, despite being her first boyfriend, felt like he could be it. She'd never dreamed of boys really, hadn't thought that maybe she could see herself settling down with another person and maybe marrying them. She saw that in him. "I'm still really sorry I put that worry in you. I never meant for you to think that." A hand moved for his lap, even as Itsuki moved to put himself in her lap. "You have literally none nothing that could make me even think about wanting to break up with you. For the record." At the mention of "funny business" Melody's cheeks burned bright and she quickly turned her attention to the furry loaf who was easily as excited about this as the two of them. "W-we can talk about that later. I think there's enough to focus on at the moment." Though... she wouldn't exactly deny she might have been thinking about some... interesting things concerning them lately. "You can definitely bring your cat hammock, Itsuki. And if you want the mini-fridge you can bring it too. But you do know we'll have our own big fridge for the three of us to share, right?" A sweet smile before she glanced back to Zach. "I know this idea might make you feel a little uncomfortable, Zach but... if there is anything you need furniture wise, new or just something you might want, let me know, okay? Anything at all and I will get it for you." A small pause before she continued. "And you don't have to worry about paying me back for it either, okay? We're a couple and we're moving into a place of our own. My money is your money, so without question or problem it goes to whatever we need. As a family." Between money her family had been giving her as an allowance or just because in her life, both when she was younger and now, and money she'd been saving up from work- and keeping in mind her parents had already said they were going to help her get settled into an apartment and help pay bills if things got rough... She had more then enough to get them anything they might need once they found an apartment suitable for their needs. Plus she was pretty sure her dad was going to spoil her rotten and pay for items for the house regardless of the money she had saved. Financially they were set.

The last thing Zach wanted was for her to feel guilt about something he assumed. Despite being an eternal senshi, and despite being twenty and in college with quite a bit of experience under his belt, Zach still had much to learn. Communication was key in important situations like this. He didn't want to ruin things with Melody. Not one bit. "Don't worry about it, Mel. It's uh... my fault for assumin' the worst, you know? But uh... you're right. There's enough to focus on, like... when do you want to move? Do your parents know? I mean, I know I gotta clear out a bunch of my stuff, maybe donate a bunch, but my dad and sister will help move stuff. I can let Miss Chamberlyn know when we're moving so I can have a day or two off... maybe after finals? It'll be all wrapped up next month. That won't be too bad, right? I mean, it's up to you, really." As much as he hated having to rely on Melody for money, she was in a better financial decision than he was at the moment. Jada's extremely generous employment allowed him to afford college classes and save up to buy a better car. Zach couldn't - and wouldn't - ever complain about that. But the thought of the three of them being a family? Something about the way she said it, the look in Melody's beautiful brown eyes, made his heart skip a beat. Family was important. Family was serious, even if they weren't related. Fiona was more a mother to him than his biological mother, and since learning about the war in Destiny City, Zach understood the distance his sister had put between them. At Melody's gentle insistence, the gray-haired boy was starting to look at therapists to unravel some of the childhood wounds his parents' divorce had inflicted upon him. Things were looking. Things were looking fantastic. "The sooner we can move in together, the better!" chirped the cat, happily loafing on Melody's lap. "I'm running a deficit on snuggling, you know. All that studying meant Zee-chan wasn't available, Melody-san. Who can do that to a poor honto kawaii neko like me? It's terrible!" "So tragic." came Zach's reply with a roll of his eyes. "Whatever will you do?"

He may have assumed what the conversation was about but she'd inadvertently played a part in his coming to that assumption. So perhaps they were both at fault in a way, not that she had plans to continue beating that dead horse. The topic of his assumptions based on her actions (and his own previous dating history) was going to be ignored for favor of moving forward. "Well my parents know I've wanted to move out pretty much since I returned to the city. Lack of a job, because I didn't want them paying for everything, pushed it back, then saving up of course. Dad knows that I've been looking offhandedly into apartments again, so he probably told mom." But she hadn't told them officially yet. Just like they hadn't officially met Zachary though they knew of him and she'd showed them pictures. "Once I'd made the decision that I would like to see if you wanted to move in with me, I kind of put off more looking because I wanted you to have a say in this as well. You need to like it too after all." Sadly, though she understood Itsuki's need to cuddle (he was still a cat after all), he might just have to wait a little bit. At least until Zach's finals were over. She was certain he'd feel better about it all if he had one less thing on his plate while they were trying to move into a new place. "I'm okay with waiting until your finals are over. One less thing for you to worry about and all that." There was a small giggle as she grinned and ran a hand down Itsuki's back to try and soothe the poor, snuggle-less cat in her lap. "And if it so pleases the cat, I can take him with me to my house until we've moved. Unless you prefer having him with you." She wondered if Itsuki helped ease some of the stress in his life, despite their playful bickering. They really were good friends and loved each other a lot. "Is there anything specific you want in an apartment though, Zach? So I know where to start looking, or what to start looking for?" She had plans to take lots of pictures if he couldn't be there to look at apartments with her.

Melody had given this more thought than even Zach had. The boy thought it was a far-off dream and didn't even begin to consider the logistics with everything else on his plate. He knew he wanted to formally meet her family at some point, but schedules were conflicting with school, work and senshi life. Perhaps now it was the time to make time, since the look in Melody's eyes said how serious she was about it. Reaching over, Zach placed a warm hand over the blonde's. "We still got a month, and I gotta meet your folks. I know we've been tryin', but... if I were your dad, I'd wanna meet the guy my daughter wanted to move in with. I promise, I'll let Miss Chamberlyn know, and I'll clear my schedule a couple nights so they can at least know I'm not some... crazy axe-murderer or Tinder-cheatin' loser." He would have thought himself a loser just six months ago, but Melody had a way of calming that inner critic to some degree. Of that, Zach was incredibly appreciative. Itsuki happily purred and rubbed against Melody's hand, chest and arm. "Hai! Melody-san is very snuggly, and her oka-san is snuggly too! I hope she's not too upset that I've missed some of her soaps. She was really invested in some of them!" Zach chuckled in response. "Nah, it's fine. You can keep 'im at your place. Besides, he likes to lay across my course books." "Ehh... only sometimes, Zee-chan. Sometimes, you need to take a break and you don't listen to me! I just use the tools at my disposal." Itsuki nodded sagely. The boy shook his head. Their banter back and forth had become much more relaxed now that Zach realized the cat loved the both of them, and his obnoxiousness was a little easier to stomach. With more confidence in his life, Zach felt himself becoming a lot less angry at the world in general. "I've got a car so it doesn't matter if it's far from campus or anything... I think it'd be nice if it could be near your work, so that's one less thing to worry about... I'm pretty good at parallel parking so a one-car garage is no big..." She had so many things figured out, and he was so easygoing, it may have been difficult to come up with a definitive checklist. "Really... as long as you're there, then it's perfect." The cat perked up. "And me too!" He leaned over to scratch beneath Itsuki's chin. "Yeah... and you, too."

She'd only given it thought because she'd been thinking about it since her return to the city. It was only within the last six months or so, less then really, that it changed to include a boyfriend and their talking cat. It was funny what could change in such a short amount of time. "I'll start looking again within the next few days and I'll let you know what I find." Probably through texts and video chats when he could manage them. "I'll also see what's available in a months time and we can work around that so we can let Jaida know as soon as possible." She wasn't going to say anything but it was really cute to hear him call her Miss Chamberlyn. "And I will see about setting up a dinner with my family~" a teasing tone even as she smiled at his hand on hers. "Don't worry too much about mama, Itsuki. She started watching reruns, not wanting to go on without you but needing to watch something. She'll be glad to have her show buddy back~" Listening to her boys chatter about things between, her heart could only continue to grow warmer. Zach definitely had calmed a bit and learned that Itsuki only did what he did out of love (and sometimes just to mess with his bonded). She could have cried just listening to them and she may have teared up just a little. It didn't help she was probably still over tired from lack of sleep. "Don't worry. I will find us the best apartment. You can count on me."

Her hand over his, Zach turned his over to give her a gentle squeeze of confidence. Truly, it had only been six months, but everything felt so right - Fiona had approved as far as he could tell. Khaleel and Lilith liked her and seemed to approve. Itsuki was all over Melody as much as possible, considering himself the fluffiest matchmaker in all of Destiny City (which Zach found cute, but would never admit). The thought of moving in, which was the next big step in their relationship, was one Zach was shockingly looking forward to. First thing's first, however - dinner with her family. "I've got this coming Friday and Saturday free from school, and Miss Chamberlyn has a couple errands for me to do but they shouldn't take too long. Would that work? I mean... I really do wanna meet your folks. Make things official, you know? I don't what your parents thinkin' I'm some thug that's no good. I mean... I've cleaned up a lot, heh." "It's true, Melody-san!" chirped the cat, practically glued to Melody's chest. "Zee-chan even went out and bought fancy shave cream and better body wash! It doesn't smell like sleaze!" Zach was scandalized. "Excuse you, Axe doesn't smell like sle---" Pausing, the boy realized the Mau was right and he deflated. "... oh god it did, didn't it? God dammit." He had to hide his face for a few moments, his perception of himself and his life flashing before his eyes. Everything was called into question for a fraction of a second in a comedic bit of teenage sadness. " ANYWAY, the new stuff's cheaper. Comes in two-packs with a coupon at Target. It's got... scrubby bits. S'fancy." "Fancy, Melody-san. Just for you. Hadena~" Zach was left muttering through his hands out of embarrassment. "...s'not just for her but that's just a nice side effect..."

"We can absolutely do dinner this weekend, which ever day works best for you. I've got the evenings off this weekend, I'm not sure how but it all works out in the end I think." She thought it absolutely precious that he was so intent on meeting her parents, though she was nervous. Though they knew of him... it would be the first time introducing a male to her family as anything but a friend. But it would be alright, right? Surely. "I doubt my parents think of you as a thug," she sighed teasingly, pulling her hand away so that she could tug childishly at one of his cheeks. "There is nothing overtly wrong with you, okay? They'll like you I promise." Hearing Itsuki talk about the changes she knew tangentially Zach was starting to make had her glancing at the cat then up to her boyfriend again as she tried not to giggle. It was cute how he felt like he needed to change himself to be with her but he didn't. He absolutely didn't. "I, for one, didn't think it smelled like sleaze," she confessed, having rather liked the smell because she often caught him at a time where it had mixed with his own personal scent and became something a little different. Maybe it smelled more strongly closer to application? "But if you like this new stuff who am I to convince you otherwise~ Though be careful with the microbead soaps. I hear the little scrubby bead things aren't too fantastic as far as drains go." Though she wasn't a hundred percent on that. A slight glance away in momentary thought had Melody's eyes glancing to her watch then pausing at the time. Had they really been talking that long? Leaning forward some, the blonde place a quick kiss to Zachary's cheek before moving to stand. A sweet smile was given to him as she did so. "I hate to do this, but I have to leave or I'll be late for work. I'll text you if it's slow maybe?" It might not be, depending. "But I'll definitely text you when I'm on lunch and we can make more plans for the weekend." Another quick kiss, this time as she moved to scoop up the cat. Sometimes it paid to work for family, on top of the cat being a sentient alien race that looked like a cat but was actually more human. "I love you, try to have a good day okay?" And with that she was off towards work, mind reeling with a lot of good information. Including the joy that soon she and her boyfriend would be sharing a living space. Lucifer Force i think this could count as a wrap! :3
