Who: Reinhart, Samael, and Zeke When: March 6th, 2018; 2pm Where: Lab 305 Weather: Chilly and sunny!
The first few months of the year had been quiet around the Lab. For Zeke it had been a small blessing; some time to breathe and enjoy the relative silence as well as rest up for what he felt would be an exciting year. But as things often did with the veternarian, he slowly but surely became restless, eager for stuff to happen and things to do.
This newest arrival was just the thing he needed.
"Hello, is this Samael?" Who knew the act of making a phone call after so long without could stir up such a thrill in his chest! "Ah, good! This is Zeke Farris from Lab 305 and I have some wonderful news!"
He went on to explain the happy circumstances surrounding his call and asked that the new Guardian drop by some time today to come pick him up. After confirming he would be at the Lab all day and offering a cheerful 'see you soon!' Zeke hung up and got himself ready for the arrival.
After all, once the call was made it was a rare occurrence for the intended NOT to show up shortly thereafter.

The new year brought a few births in the reptile house which meant all sorts of little slittery babies for Samuel. She adored each little tongue flicking baby thought it did make her wonder about the child she was suppose to be getting. Not a week later her office phone rang, the redhead laying down some files as she picked it up. "Hello? Yes this is Sam," she was about to ask the nature of the call when his next comment made her throat catch. Her Raevan had been born and was ready to be picked up. She froze a bit, unnatural for her, but the gender comment didn't escape her. He. Him. She had a boy. She thoughts turned briefly to the small picture of Hurtz on her desk. "Oh yes! I'll be by as soon as I can! T-th.....thank you so much!"The long haired woman sprinted from her office, sliding past Tau's door. The man looked up at her, very confused. "Boss? Something up?""He's here! I mean he's born! Gah! Gotta go! Picking him up! Watch the babies for me!" and with that she was off. Tau just smirked, "I think I acted the same way with my little girl was born."Sam did her best not to speed, her mind going a million miles thinking of what she should say. What did he look like? Did she have enough food ready? What did he even eat? Do they use the bathroom? All these thoughts swirled around her mind as she parked the truck and walked up the entrance. Dressed in her work clothes of khaki shorts and button up she looked a bit out of place. Her long red hair reaching her rear, blonde at the tips like flames. "Um hello? I'm....here to pick up my Raevan?" she called out.

In the time between then and Sam's arrival Zeke spent a good portion of it zipping to and fro tidying up. In truth the lobby was as presentable as could be but a little sweep here and a straightening of papers there and Zeke figured that it was truly in tip top form.
After all, it had been awhile since they had a guest! The winter, it seemed, had even kept curious passersby away and the last Raevan to have been born was Holle back in November.
He left his post for all of ten seconds to put away his broom when Sam arrived. The chimes over the door rang out merrily to signal her arrival but before he could get to the door out to his desk from his office in the next room she had called out.
"Hey there!" He was suddenly in the room with the quick stop of a man who had just jogged from one place to another. A smile was on his face and his hand was in the air to give the red haired woman a wave before he crossed the distance between them to hold it out for a proper shake. "Nice to finally meet you, Sam! I'm Zeke! Welcome to the Lab!
"You made great time, I'm rather impressed! We'll get down to brass tacks in a moment but can I offer you a drink or anything?"

Sam smiled when Zeke entered the room. He seemed almost as happy as she did. His hair was pretty wild, pink and blue! Not that she had anything to say given her own hair color. She wondered if Zeke was like doctors at the hospital, ready to give the good news to the waiting fathers and their family. She shook his hand with both hands, a quirk she'd picked up from her mother. Her mother always told her it was the hand shake equivalent of a hug. "Hi Zeke! Nice to meet you too. Thank you," she smiled, "Yeah I drove legally but I know a few back roads. Helps when transporting animals. Don't want to be stuck in traffic with a huffy viper."His offer of a drink was welcome, she asked for a glass of cold water. "I'm just....not sure what I need to do. I have so many questions really. Like feeding, medical care, perhaps I am overthinking it a bit but...well working with animals all my life made me try to think of their needs before mine.""You said on the phone, HIM. So my Raevan is a male? Huh, I owe Salina twenty bucks. Now that he's.....born, is there anything I need to know about Raevan care? I mean it's not something I'm use to caring for," she looked to the man as she sipped her water.

He clapped his left hand over the back of her right briefly when she enthusiastically returned his greeting. When she mentioned the back roads and the pleasantness of such things therein, the vet seemed to brighten all the more.
"Ah that's right you work at the Durem zoo, correct? I almost forgot that, but believe you me been there, done that!" He popped over to his desk and gestured for her to take a seat but then realized his statement might have been a bit TOO open ended. "I'm a veterinarian by daylight most days, hah! Typically don't have to worry about vipers but hey maybe some day!"
She asked for a water and he quickly provided, holding up his index finger for the international 'one moment' declaration and lickity-split he was back in and out of the office door behind him with a bottle of water.
"I hope a bottle is alright," if she wanted a cup he could gladly dip off and get one from the cafeteria but he would prefer heading down that way with her in tow - her Raevan was awaiting in that vicinity after all! He waited for an okay before taking a seat but even when he did finally sit down he did not take a relaxed posture. At the mention of questions he sat straight up, giddy at the prospect of answering whatever it is she needed and wanted to know.
"Well lucky for you, that's why I'm here! Any questions or concerns you have I can answer. Well...for the most part. Some things might have to be discovered on your own in time due to the nature of things but I can offer pointers and assumptions that'll at least keep you grounded in those instances." He gave a little good-humored shrug. "On my side of things I'll have to inform you about the final bits of paperwork you'll have to sign before you can take your Frei home but since that's all legal jargon and a slog I'd much rather answer anything you have for me first! So ask away!"
She began with the truth about the Frei's gender and to it Zeke nodded.
"Oh yes, a boy indeed! I typically try to avoid seeing the Frei before the Guardian does but I know their gender right off the bat." He tapped the manila folder in front of him on the desk. The tab jutting out from one side had Sam's name on it but enough room for another name to be printed next to hers. "I hope I didn't spoil the surprise for you, but I've found that letting that cat out of the bag near the start of things helps the Guardian along with the naming department."
He chuckled a little as he spoke, noting her mention of owing someone money. Before his own Raevan had been born Zeke had done a poll for potential names. It was good he didn't run a bet pool otherwise he might have been out quite a bit of money from the start. All in good fun though, ah well.
"As far as Raevan care goes, I'm sure you've already gotten the basics out of the way on your own." He ticked off his fingers as he continued. "A bedroom, basic hygiene things, considered a clothing shopping spree, possibly baby proofed, yadda yadda..." He dropped his hands in favor of resting them on the desk top, leaning toward Sam a little. "But as far as the stuff you might have overlooked, it's good to start consider feeding, like you already mentioned, socialization, preparing yourself for the appearance of powers, and also the other things that come with raising a kid."
He mentioned those as basic starting points. He was sure Sam would jump into any one of those topics and have twenty plus things relating to them for him to answer. He smiled a little brighter as she made mention of caring for animals and how that affected her outlook on things.
"Since you say that, I think you'll be fine. Animals and kids are kind of the same in that regard - they require their big person to put them above all else and you've got that right off the bat! You're already a step ahead of most other newbies since you don't have to learn that, so great job!
"Oh and about the medical care - that's all provided by the Lab. Your typical bumps and bruises can obviously be handled at home with an ice pack or a bandaid in most cases but when it comes to illness or the severe injuries you give me a call! I know I might not look it but as the multi-faceted, multi-talented individual I am, I'm not only the secretary-slash-front man you see before you and your encyclopedia of knowledge, but I'm also the Raevan care specialist here at the Lab!"

The woman nodded as he confirmed her work place, "Yes I'm the Head Keeper of the Reptile House and Nocturnal House. My specialty is in snakes." Perhaps it wasn't the most glamorous job but Sam adored her work, it gave her a great sense of fulfillment and peace of mind. Sam felt more at ease when Zeke announced his usual trade. A vet was a well loved member of the community at the zoo. "You are welcome to visit any time if you wanted to expand your knowledge on more exotic animals. At least one other Raevan I have met are not your average forest creature," she said thinking of Cordelia and her Basilisk soul. She took the bottle happily, open cups held too much temptation to most animals so bottles were the preferred drinking vessel. Taking a seat she sipped her water, listening to Zeke explain some of the legal aspects of the job then confirm the gender of her raevan. It surprised her he hadn't seen him already but perhaps he was just after care specialist rather than birth. Most people didn't realize it took several teams through out an animals life to care for it. "Ah yeah, I did have two in mind depending on the gender. I hope he likes it," she said, a bit of worry in her voice. After all if they were born like Dior and Ryder, they were not babies but preteen children size. Even if their minds weren't as mature. Sam listened intently to the rest of Zeke's explanation of care and needs for her Raevan. It sounded pretty straight forward given the care she gave her charges at the zoo. She had a definite look of relief when he spoke of the medical needs, "Oh good. I was kinda worried about that. I really want to do good and while I'd like to just go see him I want to make sure I can care for him. Taking an animal, or human, in without knowledge of their needs can lead to a worse environment than they left.""As far as socialization I don't want him to feel ostrichized....." she blinked and smirked a bit, "Sorry, we use a lot of puns at the zoo. But I have met a few other guardians and their raevans so I can introduce him to his own kind. I do have a bedroom read for him, allowing for privacy when needed. Not so sure on baby proofing given uh....I was...raised rather differently but if need be I can quickly adapt," she went over things in her head, ticking them off on her fingers as she talked. Speaking to a fellow care giver helped, he would understand her logic as she went through her steps. "Clothing, yeah I do have a little stashed away and given a few friends from work he won't be without different clothes for long," she smiled then got a bit more serious, "Though there is something I can't really account for and have no experience in. His powers. I know Raevans all have certain powers but do they start appearing at a certain age or is it dependant on the Raevan?"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Off in a separate room, red eyes were scanning his new surroundings through a soft veil of white. They were bright and shining, examining every inch of the room in detail as if to memorize it. A dark red velvet glove rose to brush snow white locks from his eyes, honey tan skin providing a nice little contrast to his gloves. His golden earring winked in the sunlight from a window. He floated with a regal air, shoulders up and slightly back, his chin forward. For a new born he was quite eloquent in his movements. "Interesting," a purring voice spoke, the sound almost surprising to the Raevan as he floated towards a mirror. Looking into the glass he smiled, seeing the handsome bicolor haired male staring back at him. He looked over the clothing, making sure all was in proper order with no dust or dirt visible. "Perfection," he said softly. "I wonder if there is any other so handsome as me?"

"I haven't had much experience with snakes in my field to be honest! I think they're cool as hell but when I majored in college I minored in animal husbandry." He had his best friend's family to thank in part for that. Zeke had a lot of fond memories spent on their farm and it had shaped his path from there. "If I were to go back to school I'd definitely go for zoology as a whole though. I really loved my original courses back in school but I was always set on 'be a vet'. My sister's a zoologist though and she always gets to interact with the coolest animals - it'd be so cool to be a wild animal vet you know?"
He was bouncing in his seat now and it was clear he didn't often get to talk about his chosen profession past the general stuff.
"But when it comes to snakes we DO have a couple of snake Raevans in the fold. There's Cordelia, who is a Basilisk and I mean the mythical kind, not the average kind, and Basil who is a king cobra. They're both listed on the contact sheet you were given if you ever want to reach out to their Guardians for any serpentine conundrums they might have!" If something happened to the sheet he did have plenty of spares, however. "I'll have to take you up on the zoo visit sometime. It's been a long time since I went to Durem's and I'm sure they've added exhibits since the last time I went!"
He pulled his own water bottle to himself from its spot hidden near the computer and took a swig.
"And you'll find that there's quite a few Raevans out there with more "exotic" souls than what you're used to seeing or reading about." He made the air quotes when the word came up, just to add to the emphasis he wasn't referring to your regular boa constrictor or tarantula. "They are a bit rarer in the ranks but they sure are there! Heck, one of them lives upstairs with the good Doctor. You'll probably meet him at one of the Lab's yearly gatherings - his name is Lazarus and his soul is an Incubus."
"When it comes to names I'm sure he'll love whichever one you give him. In my experience most Freis just want a name in general and whatever is given to them tends to stick just because. But then again I've also seen people see their Frei and then completely blank out because suddenly those names they had in mind just don't fit. It's kinda funny in a way, but I'm sure plenty of new parents have that happen so don't sweat it if it does for you."
Sam continued on and Zeke nodded to her when appropriate. It was clear she had a good head on her shoulders and had been planning out her course of action for awhile now. Her profession was also a boon - like with Dani being a nurse, being a zookeeper provided an outlook on things from an angle some might not consider.
When the word 'ostrichized' passed Sam's lips Zeke lit up at the pun. He needn't wave it off or say anything, it was clear by his expression that any and all puns from here on out would be well received.
"Plus you have the contact sheet and as I mentioned before we do host get-togethers throughout the year, so you won't be hurting for interaction for him! Plus as I like to say, once your Raevan is born it's like the rest of them start popping out of the woodwork so you'll probably be running into folks now more than ever!"
He chuckled a bit.
"Don't worry about baby-proofing too much, I kind of tossed that in as a joke. Granted, some Guardians DO all out baby proof their places just to be safe. It can be a toss up with Raevans at times - we've had our fair share of Freis who come out talking and acting as if they've been around for years but equally we've had those who start off life in more of an 'infancy' stage. They don't talk much or if they do, they struggle with words. But as you can imagine, both types are incredibly curious and once you get your boy home you'll want to monitor him as he gets settled in. Last thing you want is for him to pull something down or stick his hands in places where they don't belong, you understand."
If she had pets, snakes or otherwise, she'd definitely want to be careful there. He remembered Anya's first interaction with Dust Bunny almost too keenly in that moment and hoped to avoid any similar situation for Sam.
"Powers is a great topic to discuss and definitely one you wanna prepare yourself for. And to answer your question it's completely the latter, although I feel comfortable saying a dash of the former." He took another sip of water and cleared his throat, preparing to explain.
"So a Raevan has powers that derive from both their Essence and their Soul. In game terms, some powers are passive, others are active. For example - most Raevans with plant-based souls or Essences typically have an ability to photosynthesize. They can't control it, it's just there as a characteristic of their make up. That's passive. However, not all plants are alike so a Raevan with a tree soul would, let's say, be able to grow bark on their skin like armor while a Raevan with a cactus Essence might be able to grow spines. They have to actively do this for the most part, hence calling it an 'active ability'.
"Now, powers can crop up at any time. For Freis they start off with a lot of passives but some do have active abilities right off the bat. For most, however, they typically trigger under stress like a defensive mechanism although that's not always the case. Some have more of a natural affinity for their own magics than others. We're not sure why, and we've recorded that even if a soul is mythical or an Essence seemingly powerful, it doesn't mean their magic is inherently stronger or more present. Of course, just because they start off on an uneven footing as Freis doesn't mean they won't become on par or have one surpass the other later in life. As a Raevan grows so does their latent ability and that means more chances for new powers and abilities to show up, especially if they focus on developing those abilities. It's no small stretch to say a Raevan with little to no powers to show during their Frei stage couldn't become a power house as a Sigel or Valsaros, see?"

The woman smiled seeing his reactions as they spoke of animal care and their jobs. She could tell he was passionate about his love of animals as much as she was, it was refreshing to talk to someone who didn't work at the zoo with the same enthusiasm. "Zoology just spoke to me. I traveled so much with my parents everywhere, stayed in all sorts of environments and cultures I just love how they view animals. Made me what to help them," she explained as she told him a few stories about her travels with her geologist father and botanist mother. "Yes I've met Cordelia actual! She was at the park when I was doing a presentation on reptiles for an animal event. It was so amazing to hear her talk to the snakes and comforting to know they all felt I took good care of them" she smiled bright, her eyes showing her happiness. She told him about their new batch of baby snakes as well as some of the animals she cared for. Discussion of their rehabilitation work and education of the general public. Taking a card from her shirt pocket she wrote the number of the two houses she was over and handed it to him, "Just let me know ahead of time and I'll give you a behind the scenes tour. Let you meet those wild animals."She listened to the rest of his speech, sipping from her water bottle. "So it's similar to an imprinting. Interesting," she stroked her chin softly. The next bit she paid extra attention to, listening in detail to the conversation about powers. She'd been most worried about this, given animals don't exactly have powers, just natural advantages they'd evolved over time. But powers were something entirely different. She'd have to keep an eye out. "Well, I think I've gotten all my questions answered. If nothing else I'll keep in touch. I think......I think I'm ready to see him" she smiled with a touch of nervousness. Her mind whirled with the idea of what he might look like given the other Raevans she'd seen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Raevan admired himself in the mirror for a bit, examining his facial features and the jewelry on his ear. He liked what he saw. Running his gloved hand through his fingers he enjoyed the multicolored aspect of it. He'd have to take good care of it. His expression was smug, though warm in the eyes. Looking towards a counter he saw a small bowl of fruit, perhaps for little snacking. Floating over he poked through it. He seemed to know what they were even if it was the first time seeing them. His fruit sole connecting to his fellow plants. Grapes; no not what he wanted. Banana; sort of but not it. Orange; almost. Finally his hand rested on a bright apple. he smiled softly. His eyes turned......a bit cold as he felt nourishment fill his body as the apple began to wither and shrink. He chuckled darkly until the apple was nothing but dust. He left the little pile next to the bowl. Turning back to the window, his warm charming expression returned.

"You sound a lot like Alex," he grinned as he named the eponimous sister in question, "and I hear you on the wanting to help animals thing."
Sam said she met Cordelia and Zeke looked delighted by that notion. Connections in the time before someone got their Raevan were great to get if one could as it opened the door for the newborns to meet another of their kind as soon as possible.
"She's a great girl, I'm glad you got to meet her. I'm sure she'll be ecstatic to know your Raevan is finally here."
He listened to her go on about her newborns at the zoo and when she pulled a business card out from her shirt he mimicked her actions, but out of his wallet instead.
"Thank you! And here, if you have any pet or farm animal veterinary needs you can give me a call!"
She declared her questions answered and her desire to meet her boy. Zeke stood as soon as she said the latter, scooping up Sam's file and a pen before leading her to the glass door at the back of the lobby.
"If you have anymore questions at any time feel free. But yeah you do have my number in case of anything after-the-fact, so without further ado, let's go!"
Zeke pulled open the door and let Sam through first. The hallway beyond the lobby was well lit and incredibly clinical looking - white tile floors beneath walls that lacked anything other than the several doors lining it. When he was through Zeke took up step next to Sam, pointing to a door on the left hand side of the hall only feet away.
"Okay here we are," he declared in hushed tones when they reached their destination. He pivoted on his toes to face Sam, holding his index finger briefly to his lips before pointing at the door they stopped in front of. "So like I said before, I haven't seen him myself yet. That's kind of part of our little tradition here at Lab, see. Once they're born Kyou gives them a check up to make sure they're alright and then once they're done with that they're put in one of these waiting rooms until their Guardian arrives. It gives them a chance to wake up without too much to worry them but we also try and make sure that their Guardian is the first one to see them outside of that."
Part of it was a worry about imprinting, in the case of some souls. Another part was just to establish a bond in the moments between the meeting and Zeke entering the room to guide the Guardian through the last steps.
"So here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna knock to let him know we're here and then I'll open the door. When I do, you go through first and say hello. I'll wait out here for a few minutes so you two can get introduced and then after I come in we'll take care of the final bits of paperwork. Once we're settled there, you'll be free to take him home, okay?!"
He was bouncing physically now, a peppy rocking motion on his toes as he explained. He waited for Sam to give the go ahead and when it was given, he turned to face the door, knocking three times on its wooden face with his knuckles.
"One...two...three..." He dropped his hand on the latch and let the door swing inward. As it did so, Zeke stepped back from view of the Frei inside. "He's all yours, Sam!"

Sam enjoyed talking with Zeke, she could already see herself inviting him to Zoo events if nothing else to let him work with more animals. After the card exchange she felt nervous. She stood with him and walked toward the door, her heart starting to race a little.
She'd wrangled poisonous snakes and large gators, even angry badgers; but knowing she was about to see what would be essentially her child was giving her lots of butterflies. Stepping through the first door she followed his finger to the plain white door, her Raevan had been so close the whole time. Had he heard them talking?
She listened to him explain the tradition, it sounded reasonable enough. New born animals usually imprinted on the first living thing they saw so why wouldn't Raevans be any different. Especially given her soul was that of a mammal, she imagined more animal souled Raevens might have that same issue.
As he knocked and stepped back, Sam took a breath and stepped in. "Hello?" she asked softly as she didn't immediately see the boy.
Reinhart looked up as he heard a knock on the door, moving to float next to the window. He wasn't sure who was coming in or what they would want. The person who entered had long red hair like himself, though far longer and light colored at the tips. Her eyes were a pretty green. She seemed confused until they landed on his visage. Instinctively he bowed, "Greetings My Lady."
Sam blinked as she looked on the Raevan floating before her. He floated just over 6', she wondered if they floated at what their height would be later when they had legs. He had fine red and white clothing with gold accents, she could even see part of it was leather while his gloves seemed velvet. Definitely the apple soul in him, she could even smell the faint scent of apples in the air. His hair caught her attention, the white top and stripe down the back; the skunk soul in him. She smiled softly, tears almost in her eyes, "H-hello.....Reinhart," she spoke his name to him for the first time.
The Raevan cocked his head to the side and he floated toward her, his movements smooth and regal almost. Reinhart? Was that his name? It must be as she was looking at him, "I am Reinhart?" he asked softly.
She nodded, walking over and looking up into his red eyes. He was quite handsome, like a prince straight from the fairy tale his essence seemed derived from. "Yes, your name is Reinhart. It is German, it means Wise Counsel."
He thought on that for a moment, smiling as he liked the meaning. "Yes, I am Reinhart. Who are you?"
"I'm Sameal, your guardian. I am...uh....charged with taking care of you and giving you a good home. I have a nice room all made up, I hope you find it comfortable," she said softly. She remembered talking to the animals she cared for almost like this. Telling them her name and talking about their new home, but they never responded in a language she could understand all that well. Now she had a ward that could easily tell her how he felt about his accommodations.
Reinhart considered this. He felt some sort of strange attachment to her, he couldn't place it but he knew she cared very much for him. He nodded and took her hand, kissing the top, "Very well, My Lady. What shall I call you? Samael?"
"Oh! Um...well you can call me Sam or...um....Mother...whatever you prefer."
"I shall call you....Mother. It feels.....proper," he smiled a very charming smile. "Who is out there with you? I heard another voice."

When the door slid open and Sam went inside, Zeke stepped off to the side to listen and wait.
His smile kept on his lips as he listened to the exchange between Guardian and Raevan, the former giving the latter a name and said latter one reacting to it. It seemed Sam got herself a charge who was quite lucid and chatty right off the bat! She got lucky!
Reinhart, for that is what Sam dubbed him and he had so graciously accepted, suddenly questioned Zeke's presence. Seemed he had good hearing to boot! Usually the vet would give it a few more minutes but if he was being asked after, no sense in delaying the inevitable!
"That'd be me!" Zeke strode into the room with a wave and a beam, eyes falling on the Skunk Raevan immediately upon doing so. The boy Frei in question was as handsome as any of his kin, and amusingly Zeke had to note he looked strikingly similar to Laz with his red and white hair and red eyes. But where the Incubus was tanned in complexion, Reinhart was paler; his wings also smaller (and naturally less demonic looking), and his body more garbed by default. He looked every bit the handsome fairy tale prince in fact!
"Sorry to keep you waiting, just wanted to you meet Sam before you met me!" Zeke patted the Skunk's Guardian on the shoulder as he stopped next to her before extending his hand to the other male in the room. "My name is Zeke, it's nice to meet you, Reinhart!"
