Mission Information
Location: Nichili, Yucatán, Mexico
Debrief: It's sun, surf, and skin at the beach, along with enough odd occurrences to raise flags at Deus HQ. Your orders are to investigate a certain beach while posing undercover as a lifeguard. In your red swimsuit, with a whistle, bullhorn, and really tall chair at your disposal, there's every chance you look like someone ready to run attractively down the coat in order to save lives in a really glamorous way.

Morning

Roll 2d8 for two prompts

1. Someone falls in love with you and tries to spend most of the morning either hitting on you or drowning to catch your attention. (And get mouth to mouth)
2. You catch a couple of teenagers doing something the shouldn't in the showers. It's up to you whether you just turn a blind eye or yell at them.
3. A child on a floaty drifts far out into the water. They're crying loudly and people are panicking and it's your chance to be a hero of the people!
4. You step down and the squishes to reveal something brown stuck to your foot. It's poop.
5. Your sunblock was not actually sunblock. You smell like bacon for the rest of the day.
6. You think you see a sea monster, but it's just some kids having a water noodle fight.
7. A fight breaks out nearby, a dance fight. Someone challenges you!
8. A mob of adorable and adoring children surround your high and mighty lifeguard throne. They seem impressionable and willing to start a cult for you, if only out of boredom while their moms participate in their beachside bookclub.

Afternoon

Roll 1d4

1. Illegal Substances

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- A group of people are acting oddly, they appear jumpy and nervous, even in the light of day.
- You notice groups forming and breaking up regularly, and people acting secretive nearby. You glimpse money changing hands at least once.
- Someone has what looks at first like a seizure on the beach. They cough up what looks like a half eaten candy onto the sand. Touching it, you realize it's something very like the FEAR candies that get fed to minipets.
- Several times you're called out to rescue people stranded on rocks in shallow water, who refuse to swim back themselves out of fear that they will drown.

2. The Temple

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- A parent notices their child has gone missing and a search is called.
- You notice several birds seem to disappear into thin air around a section of the cliffs.
- You notice a patch of plants that are not native to this part of the world, growing near a section of the cliffs.

You eventually approach the cliffs, and with your weapon's help, see beyond the illusion to reveal an intricately carved opening that leads into a temple.

3. Terror of the Deep

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- Beach goers begin to complain they something is pulling them down into the water.
- Several people complain (and several more are all praise) concerning "the topless girl on the rock". Every time you go to look, though, the place they referred to is empty.
- You hear a strange song that pulls to you. A man walks into the water without trying to swim as his family shouts for help.

4. Wild Card

Select your choice of the above prompts.

Evening

Illegal Substances
Your investigations lead you to a someone selling small candies you may recognize as similar to FEAR candies.

Encounter

Roll 1 d4

1. You find the source at an evening bonfire. Partygoers are strange and manic as they dance, or huddle, or even cry to themselves, shivering all the while. One person seems to be unaffected, and as you approach them you may recognize them as another hunter, one who hasn't been seen since the Life Labs exploded in 2015. They summon their weapon.
Mob:
Renegade Hunter
HP: 60
Auto Damage: 6
Special: If their HP hits from 0-7 range, their eyes turn black and a pair of doors appear for them to escape through. Going through those doors to pursue feels like an incredibly bad idea.

Should you fail, a stranger tries to rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

2. You notice something off about one of the people you kept seeing in groups. Following them later, you notice they don't go to the parking lot or any of the small parties. instead they go into the showers after everyone is gone, despite not being dressed for swimming or showing any interest in the water all day. You enter the shower just in time to see them removing their face. The illusion drops, and you find a creature slowly removing a suit made of actual human skin. The Dealer is a creature of Halloween in disguise. Upon seeing you they try to run. Roll 1d20 to keep them from escaping, 13-20 is success.
Mob:
Dealer Creature (species/race is your choice)
HP: 40
Auto Damage: 3
Special: If you bring their HP between 1-5 then you may capture them and bring them back to Deus. Otherwise they dissipate when they hit 0.

Should you fail, a stranger will try to rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

3. You notice people going in a strange direction, and follow a group to what looks like an abandoned warehouse. Sneaking past security, you discover what seems to be an underground fight club of sorts. Blending in, you notice a large number of audience members appear affluent. Many of them seem to be wearing special glasses, and you overhead someone complaining about them while admitting they were necessary to see the whole show. Your eyes catch sight of a number of people acting much the same as those on the beach had, and witness several of them putting candies in their mouth. In the center of the building is a cage, and within it there is a human with a regular weapon trying to fend off some sort of monster as the crowd cheers on the bloodshed. Take your time to investigate, then sneak back out again. (Roll 1d20 to escape, 10 and over is success. If you fail, security shoots you with a runic handgun for 10dmg. Continue trying to escape.)

Should you fail, a stranger will try to rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

4. Wild Card

Select your choice of the above prompts.

The Temple
You enter the temple, and the air of it is different from the beach. Turning around you notice the exit is now gone. Horseman runes are carved along stone walls, alongside the intricate patterns carved by a vast multitude of insects through the ages.

Encounter

Roll 2 d8, for two prompts. You may roll more if you'd like.

1. You enter an empty room, full of dust.
2. You enter a room filled with vines that seem to shift and move in the corner of your eyes. There's a patch of red blooms in one corner, and closer inspection leads to the realization that they are growing through a human body. If you have any open wounds, you'll soon begin to have audio hallucinations and even feel something crawling under your skin. When you get back to Deus, the infirmary will give you something to purge the vines growing within you, and you may end up with a vine-like or even floral scar from the experience.
3. You find a room filled with clothes and accessories. If you are on for looting bodies, you'll find several expensive watches, jewelry, and even some wallets. You end up with about a thousand dollars worth of finds you can comfortably carry.
4. You find a room filled with neat piles of body parts. At your presence, they begin to shift and move. If you choose to run, roll 1d20. Anything over 13 means you successfully escape and close the room's door to keep whatever was in there, inside. Fail, and you find yourself overwhelmed by humanoids with shifting features that settle quickly into your features.
Clone Mob
HP: ???
Auto Damage: none
Special: You must land an attack four consecutive times to escape them. If you miss even once, they overwhelm you. You wake up later, naked and alone except for your weapon totem.
5. You find a room full of old scrolls and dried herbs.
6. You find a beautiful underground orchard with a fountain at the center.
7. You encounter a passageway full of traps, roll 1d20 to determine how much damage it does to you.
8. There is a click as you step down, and a section of wall slides up to reveal a massive beetle. It barrels toward you all pincers and shell.
Beetle Mob
HP: 30
Auto damage: 3
Special: Whenever you miss, it blocks your next attack for 3 on top of its auto damage!

Terror of the Deep
Eventually you catch the mysterious girl, and there is no doubt at all she's a mermaid.

Encounter

Roll 1 d4

1. They try to run away. To them from escaping, roll 1d20, 10 and over is a success. The mermaid is extremely frightened of you, and tries to explain that it was juts fun, and nobody had gotten hurt, and that she'd stay away from then on. You can choose to let her go or fight her.
Mermaid Mob:
HP: 30
Auto Damage: 3
Special: Special: If you bring their HP between 1-5 then you may capture them and bring them back to Deus. Otherwise they dissipate when they hit 0.

2. She is friendly and just wants to talk for awhile. She doesn't understand what's the problem with teasing a few humans at all. It's very lonely and boring where she lives. If you try to convince her to be weaponized, she will agree very easily.

3. What seemed like one mermaid was actually two, they don't run away or talk, they just attack you.
HP: 25 x 2
Auto Damage: 2 per mermaid left
Special: Special: If you bring their HP between 1-5 then you may capture them and bring them back to Deus. Otherwise they dissipate when they hit 0.

4. Wild Card

Select your choice of the above prompts.

Morning

How he managed to get missions circling around the Yucatan, he had absolutely no idea, but Rhys wasn't complaining for once because he found himself at a beach this time. Sun, sand, and...well, the beach. In hindsight he did protest why he was getting sent off to some beach at the end of February, but if he'd been told he was going to the South again he would have arrived dressed more appropriate. As in not in three moderate layers of clothing to make sure he didn't freeze his a** off on some beach on the East Coast. So he spent the first few minutes of his mission dressing down and stuffing his sweaters into his pack. After he got his uniform and fake badge on, he jogged up to his post and greeted the current lifeguard with a wave.

"My turn!" he called up, and some minutes later he found himself at the seat atop the tower, all covered in sunscreen and ready to get this show on the road. Of course...it would help if he knew exactly what to look for. Still, he kept his eyes peeled. Whatever he was sent out here to handle, he knew it's rear its ugly head sooner or later. In the meantime, he could at least enjoy the sun a little bit.

One
Someone falls in love with you and tries to spend most of the morning either hitting on you or drowning to catch your attention. (And get mouth to mouth)

He wasn't sure if it had been minutes or hours before someone finally caught his eye. And no, not like that. Some girl was crying out for help while flailing in the water. Ignoring Zephira's warning Rhys hurried down his little tower and into the water, more than ready to help. Maybe it was a sign? Maybe something was grabbing her from under the surface? Maybe she was really drowning?

"Yoh! Hang on," he called as he swam his hardest to where she was. But lo and behold as soon as he arrived and moved to help her swim back to shore she seemed perfectly fine.

It was an odd thing, and he could swear it was sending the creepiest kind of shiver up his spine. He felt eyes on him all morning, and other "drowning" incidents that resulted in the exact same instance of her being totally and completely fine. Zephira snorted in his head the entire time, but he couldn't just...ignore her. As tempting as it sounded.

Three
A child on a floaty drifts far out into the water. They're crying loudly and people are panicking and it's your chance to be a hero of the people!

Finally, though, a bit later in the morning he heard a familiar and very genuine sounding shriek coming from a mother on the shore. As he watched momentarily from his tower she was pointed and shrieking at the distant view of someone floating along with the tide, crying and hollering. Eyes wide, he hopped back down his tower and, ignoring the fake-drowning-girl-stalker who was fake-drowning again just nearby, he rushed to the water and immediately started swimming out.

He had a feeling no one would really understand what he said so he did his best, making sure to keep an eye out for anything in the water. Something using the kid as bait, maybe something trying to lure someone like him out after sensing his FEAR shield. Regardless, he went after the kid anyway, and it wasn't long before he managed to get a hold of the kid's floaty and swam the both of them to shore. He wasn't quite sure what to say to the vehement thanks the mother was giving him, so he simply smiled and nodded along until he could finally slip away.

And just like that morning was over...

Afternoon

After a quick break and lunch, he heard another mother shrieking.

Heaving a sigh and half wondering why in the hell parents brought their kids to the damned beach, the brunette was started to work his way back to the Lifeguard tower when a mother, a different mother, approached him and grabbed him by both his arms. Tears were streaming down her cheeks as she pleaded with him to do something. It didn't entirely click until she showed him the toddler-size sandals that her now missing child had left behind. He went on the alert almost immediately and did his best to reassure the mother that he would join in on the search and do his best.

Unfortunately the area was foreign to him, and while he'd gotten a good view of the layout and all he wasn't all too familiar with anything specific. The paths into the forest or up the cliffs or to the secret areas that were still kissed by the ocean were all things he didn't have the know-how to get to, but as promised he did his best. Not just for the mother but for the sake of his mission. He was here to do something, and while he had a feeling saving some kid would just be a bonus there was a good chance there was more to it than the kid just wandering around. So he took sweeping glances of the area, trying to feel out where FEAR creatures might be lurking or lingering while they watched the humans on the shore. Squinting, he approached a curious cliff.

"Birds..." he murmured as he went.

‹ Yes, birds. What about them? ›

'There's something...weird about it. Not the birds, the cliff over there.' He nodded for emphasis, though he knew Zephira could see only what he saw. 'See it?'

‹ I think. There's less and less of them coming back when they circle the cliff, is that right? ›

He nodded and made his way over, slowly. Carefully. And when he was sure no one was watching him he summoned his weapon and made his way up the cliff. Along the way he noted several unnatural looking plants. Not that he was the world's greatest botanist, but he could at least figure out when a plant wasn't something a normal person could see.

At the very least, he knew he was on the right track. As he made his way up the cliff the less he noticed any outsiders, any normal human civilians calling out the missing child's name or the birds calling overhead. He realized it a little too late, but he had pressed past some kind of an illusion, and before long he found himself standing before another looming temple. At which point his expression dropped into plain disbelief and distaste.

"Aw, ********' c'mon! Again!?"

Evening

Despite himself he knew he was here on a mission, so he stepped forward and made his way inside the temple. Once inside he took a deep breath and squinted a bit as though the action would clarify the view directly ahead of him. There was something so different about this place. Eerie was the best word he could think to describe it. He glanced all around, and it was only then that he realized that the exit was gone.

"Well s**t."

The Temple: Five
You find a room full of old scrolls and dried herbs.

Given he had no other choice but to move forward, that was exactly what he did. Thankfully he had Zephira hefted over his shoulder as they went, so he felt at least a little more than capable of defending himself should something happen. And he knew that someone was bound to happen.
Which made him wonder why he didn't ask for a partner just in case. Even if he was trying to prove himself more than capable, there wasn't any sense into diving headlong into danger without making sure you'd be able to get back out in one piece.

With a sigh he moved along, inspecting the curious carvings in the walls and wondering what they were all about. He pulled his phone out and took some photos, and soon enough he wandered into a room. It looked like some kind of a study so he took a second to really take a good look around and peruse the place. He grabbed a handful of scrolls and stuff some herbs into a spare plastic pouch he had in his bag, and once he was done with the room he moved on.

The Temple: Eight
There is a click as you step down, and a section of wall slides up to reveal a massive beetle. It barrels toward you all pincers and shell.

He moved along until he reached a set of stairs, and after glancing around and noting no other options given his path of choice, he took a deep breath and started on his way down. Of course it was around the middle that he heard something, an audible click or something of the sort that triggered some kind of a switch that led to a section of the wall to his left to slide up. And behind it, of course, was a giant, likely FEAR-infused beetle of some kind.

"My luck, huh, Zeph?" he muttered as he stood his ground, eyes narrowed as the beetle headed straight for him.

Given the surprise behind the wall Rhys wasn't quite so able to attack so well, nor defend himself to the best of his ability either. He felt the bettle ram straight into his shoulder, zooming right past him and slamming into the wall before soon turning around and setting its sights on him again.

Gritting his teeth, the intermediate trainee readied his sword again, this time hoping he would be more ready for the oncoming hit.

It took a second but Rhys eventually got himself back onto his feet, grimacing as he tried to move his right ********' perfect," he groaned, but still insisted on standing his ground. Again because he didn't have a choice, and because he didn't want another temple-residing FEAR creature getting the best of him. Again. Thankfully the beetle was one-track minded, so as it barreled toward him he dodged just so, and while he felt it graze his arm he was able to strike a rather serious blow to it as well.

They exchanged blows again after the beetle came at him rather wildly after that last hit. Despite himself, he found it rather amused by the fact that the beetle wasn't able to do much more. That was a good bit of luck, at least.

With his goal set Rhys looked on at the oversized and obviously very hurting bug, and when it came for him one last time he sidestepped and let it graze his arm just once more. Using that arm he pushed the bug as hard as he could to turn it on its side. As soon as its belly was in sight he ran forward and plunged his sword into it. The beetle screeched and writhed on his blade, but Rhys knew better than to be anything but merciless with these being. Non-sentient. Minions, at best.

So he ran and sliced his sword straight through the beetle's body until it stopped screeching and simply lay limp where he left it, and the fight was over finally.

‹ Wonderful work, you moron. Now get this beetle gunk off of me. ›

He snorted and simply de-summoned his weapon before moving on carefully.

He explored the temple for a little bit longer and thanked his lucky stars or whatever gods existed that he didn't hit another beetle-summoning button or trip any kind of traps that would add on to his already wicked scar on his arm. His shoulder was pretty messed up, though, but that was pretty good as far as he was concerned. Soon enough he did find his way to an exit and he made his way out with a sigh of relief.

Once out he double checked to make sure the scrolls and herbs he collected didn't turn to dust. After making sure he had everything, he summoned Zephira--he assumed he needed her to get out of the illusion as well--and started making his way back down the cliffs. Though instead of the beach he headed for where the portal had dropped him at the start of his day, and he waited...and waited...until the portal reappeared as scheduled and he stepped inside, glad to finally be heading back to HQ.
