She had baked a cake. All on her own, and had even decorated it, making it as fancy as her rudimentary skills would allow, and when it was done…Kelly was quite proud of herself. Now, it wouldn’t win her any fifty thousand dollar prizes, but it made her happy, and it tasted good…and she knew that Dessy would love it.
After carefully packing the cake up in an old container that seemed made for such a thing, she had started off for the park, texting December to meet her there as quickly as possible.
Birthdays were special things…and Kelly wanted to make Dessys the best that it could be, and that was what she had fully intended to do. There was a cake, and a few presents…nothing fancy, but she had done her best, just small sparkling things from the craft store mostly, some glitter slime and a few really pretty buttons that she hoped December would eventually use on some fancy costume that they would make together. She had a fancy tablecloth and plates that she was going to get set up as soon as she got to the park...and some balloons, but without the realization beforehand that balloons needed helium and not…just…breath in order to float…
Well. Kelly had a package of balloons regardless.
When she got to the park she quickly set the tablecloth out, smoothing the plastic covering with its confetti shapes and silly party hats down and setting up two plates and two cups, filling the cups with some soda she had stashed away, and keeping the cake covered, she drew out the candles she had brought, glancing around for December so she would know when it was time to get this party started.
When she saw the boy approaching, Kelly waved and then quickly turned her back to him opening the cake case and sticking the candles in, lighting them quickly. “Happy Birthday Dessy!”

The moment December got the message from Kelly, he immediately bounced out of his bed in the Barracks and hurried to get himself ready. While he was still sore all over, he was over sulking and really just spent his time sleeping, trying to recover fully from the beat down a few weeks before. The bruises were nice and faded now, and he was lucky Wardite had spared his face so he wouldn't have to explain anything, but juuuust as a precaution, he put on a few extra layers. Easily explained, of course, given just how chilly the air was!
In an instant he appeared in his favorite bush in the park, popping out slightly covered in leaves and from there, he set off, looking for his best friend. Of course, being December, he got lost, and then took much longer than he anticipated to show up. He was more than a little disappointed in himself for that but... Hey! There was some excuses that were good, right? He could say he got stuck in a bush or something. It was partially right atleast!
When he saw Kelly, he called out to her, excited and just ready to bounce right on over. "KELLY! Hi hi hi! How are you?!"
Skidding to a stop right before colliding with her, he had his arms ready to hug her as tight as he could with the bruises that lined his sides, but luckily he stopped.
In Kelly's hands was a cake... What? It was his birthday...? There were plates... And presents... and.. And oh dear, even party hats and confetti!
For a moment he blinked, trying to think just exactly what the day was, and then gasped, simply beaming at Kelly.
"I... I had forgotten! Thank you Kelly! Thank you so much! Oh it's so pretty!! Thank you, thank you!" He could have cried right then and there at the kindness that dear sweet girl showed him. But he didn't. No, Kelly didn't need to see him cry. He only ever wanted to be smiles for her!
"Do I have to make a wish? I have the best friend in the whole wide world, I don't think I need anything else!"

Kelly’s eyes sparkled as December saw his cake and she nodded fervently. “Still, you have to make a wish okay? Something amazing and one day it’ll come true and you’ll be so happy and everything will be wonderful.” They could both us that. Perhaps it would just come in the form of a ‘fix everything’ button, that would be fantastic…though, in a way, that was what December had been.
And now she had to be that for him. He had turned her life from a bleak…horrible thing to something she looked forward to. Sure she wasn’t happy still with a lot of things…but at least she had support other than her brother now…and the hole where Bea had been…was starting to heal.
A little.
Quietly, Kelly put the cake on the table and hugged her friend tightly. “Make a wish, Dessy. Make a wish and blow out the candles and we’ll get this party started. We’ll have a good time and forget the entire world today. There’s nothing more important right now than you, so…close your eyes and make a wish!”
She squeezed him tightly one last time and drew away, keeping her hand wrapped around his own, grinning.

December fully ignored the pain shooting up and down his sides in favor of hugging Kelly back just as tightly as she hugged him. He wouldn't be sad, he wouldn't think too deeply on just how badly his heart had been aching as of late. Not today! Not when Kelly worked so super hard on this little party.
Once released, he held her hand tight thinking long and hard about what he wanted to wish for. Part of him, somewhere deep down, wished that Leucite had pulled his starseed back then... While he never wanted to die out right, atleast then he wouldn't feel like such a stranger to those he was forced to work with. Even if it was bad in a way, back when his sister and brother were still alive he felt he had a bit of worth. That there was someone who he could home to and feel even somewhat loved. All of that didn't exit anymore... The barracks were cold as they were dark, and even when he tried, nothing seemed to make the place any more homey feeling.
Heck, the only place that even felt remotely like home was when he was here, with Kelly, doing whatever they decided to do at the time... She liked him, and he adored her, and that feeling tended to linger longer and longer, following him back to the barracks and as he curled up in his bed he wished she was still there.
There were no wishes he could think of, nothing that was even remotely possible, and he wasn't lying when he said he had Kelly, who was his best friend.. It'd be greedy to want anything else.
He simply blew out the candles with a blank mind, tucking in the extra wish he had in his pocket for later use. Surely there'd be more important things to wish about than his own problems.
"Done! Wish made! Time for cake! Mmm!! The best cake! Even better than the cake we baked together!"

Kelly grinned, pleased that she had done so good with this. December deserved a fantastic birthday, he deserved the world, and she was going to do her best to give it to him. Besides…making sure that Dessy was happy ended up making her happy as well, so it was always a win/win situation.
“The best cake for now Dessy! It’s not perfect, but I worked really hard on it, I’m sure when we go to more lessons we’ll be able to make even better cakes, but I’ll tell you right now, I put my whole heart into this one, so if it’s a little chewy, that’s why. It didn’t puree the way I thought it would.”
Her grin didn’t fade at all, and even though such dark humor wasn’t normally her thing…it kind of amused her to use it for once. “I’m really glad you came today, not that I thought you wouldn’t show but…but I’m still really glad that you did!”
She was worried about him…but he was here now, so she could do what she could…and later…well.
She would worry about later when it became now. But right now, he was smiling and she was smiling…and that was what mattered.
“I want you to just have the happiest birthday ever, Dessy. So…Happy Birthday!” Quickly, she cut into the cake, placing a large slice on her best friends plate.

"For now then! It is the best for now!" He parroted right back and went right over to where the plates was and happily took the piece.
"If you're whole heart is in it, I guess that means your heart belongs to me now! And THAT means that the next cake we bake has to have my whole heart in it so that you can have it too. That way we aren't both left heartless." He had seen that game before, the one about the kingdoms and the hearts. It never went well for those who lost their heart! But if you gave it away willingly he was sure it worked out better in the end. And if you got one to replace it, then surely it was all good! He didn't want to think about those dark thoughts from a moment ago, and instead wanted to focus on how happy he was, because honestly, he wasn't sure if he had ever been this happy on his birthday before.
"I'm glad I came too, and you've already made it the best and happiest birthday for even thinking about me, so thank you very much, Kelly. I hope you know I love you to the moon and back!" What he really loved right now though was this cake! One bite had sparkles in his eyes, frosting on his cheeks, and a happy noise coming from his full mouth!
"This is amazing! I can taste the heart and the love in it all the way! I've never eaten anything more amazing in my life, for now!" December's grin was now frosting coated, but he didn't care. "Have you tried it yet? You gotta!"

For a moment, Kelly just stared at the boy, her eyes wide and her cheeks turning just slightly pink. “I…uh…I mean…yeah…Yeah I guess so.”
Her real heart felt as though it were going to flutter itself right out of her chest and she wasn’t quite sure what to do about it…if she should do anything. But…the important thing was the fact that Dessy did like the cake…and his reaction brought a very giddy feeling along with it.
“Well…good! I’ll only get better at baking too…and so will you! A-and neither of us will end up without our hearts…that’s…that’s great…you’re great.” Leaning closer to December, Kelly placed a kiss upon his cheek. “Happy birthday again, my best friend in the world. Here’s to another hundred or two that we’ll have together, okay?”
She had done it…she had worked so hard for this…and now it was time to celebrate.
