"It's not fair..."

That was his usual reply when his mother told him he had to attend school, but now it was directed at nothing in particular in the aftermath of a talking-to. On his own, he had begun to advance his learning on his own; More spells, advanced sciences, and he'd even snuck in an application for a familiar on his own.

When the Language Arts teacher, Echo, had caught him sneaking a book on necromancy under his sweater. A stern discussion later, a mention that if he did it again he'd be taken to the headmaster and have his mother called in. for a conference.

All he wanted to do was learn! And get good enough to graduate, and then go live in the woods like his mother...

It just wasn't fair, and he lamented this as he sat, nearly nesting in his impossibly long and thick hair, on the floor in a corner of the library surrounded by books that would probably be more suited to a younger senior, or an older junior.

User Image Winter strolled through the section of the Library were they kept old textbooks. Her spectrefox Jack was on her tail, making sure she didn't get lost though she had been here multiple times. She had just picked up a donated Asterion University book on Botany. It seemed the colleges donated a lot of books for curious seniors to help them get a glimpse into possible futures. Winter liked to look at the "retired" text books because noone could tell her she couldn't read them. She liked books, and plants, so a book about plants was right up her ally. The only plant books for her age were...simple pictures books or... basics of gardening....which she found boring. The book in one arm and her old worn plushie in the other she made her way to the back of the library where she usually sat in read. However, to her surprise there was someone already there, and they had quite the collection of books sprawled out infront of them. Upon closer inspection, it was another freshling. Winter was very confused, this had never happened before. Thats where she always sat and now someone else was sitting there. She approached the other freshling, her plushie clenched close to her chest.

When Trinket got stuck on a particularly big word, he would usually read around it to try and figure out what it meant on his own. Usually the method worked, but sometimes he wasn't so lucky. At that point, it was time to refer to the dictionary. Stubborn as he was, he wasn't stubborn enough to just guess. That would mean he was missing something vital in his learning.

Looking up to look at where he put his dictionary, he jumped a little bit at seeing the fey! thankfully for both of them, Trinket's reactions were rather...dull most times, so all he did was jump a little, and utter 'oh'.

"...Hi?" He mostly questioned rather than greeted. "am...I in your way...?"

User Image Yes. They definitely were! Winter mustered up all her courage and opened her mouth to speak. "............". "No"
She folded her arms and plopped down. She didnt need to sit right there.. just because she did pretty much every day.
Winter ended up sitting a couple feet away with her back to the wall. She opened the book and tried her best to focus.
Jack meanwhile sensing Winter's tension laid down and put his head on her lap. Chapter One. Plant Classification. Awesome. As much as Winter reveled at the new knowledge everything felt off and she had this uneasy feeling the other freshling was starring, yet she dare not look and find out.

She was absolutely correct.

As Trinket stared the other freshling down with mis-matched eyes, his twin tails began to twitch. This was the perfect opportunity to make a friend, right? Wasn't that something he was told he had to work on? Besides, if someone had some to this area of the library, surely they were just as interested in learning as he was?

Taking a quick note of what book the other was reading from, he browsed the shelves he could most easily see and reach. Ah, and there was a good one! Properties of the root! He'd read it before, and it was utterly fascinating.

Untangling himself from his mane of hair that made a nest, he grabbed for the book and slowly made his way over to the other, then held the book out.

"Wanna try this one, too?" he asked, smiling enough that his still-growing tusks and fangs were visible.

Winter saw the other approaching from the order of their eye. Roots? What did she know about roots. hmm. "The primary root, or radicle, is the first organ to appear when a seed germinates" Winter recited from memory. "Some people think its the stem but not". She sat her current book on the floor and took the other from the .. what were they? A grimm hybrid maybe? "Thanks." She looked the other freshling over. Their appearance was really unique to say the least, definitely wouldn't peg them as a reader. She looked down at the book and at them again. Be brave, not everyone in this school is jerk. "Winter...my name is Winter."

"Trinket." He replied softly, taking care to not scare the other. It was like when he was talking to a bunny he'd rescued from a net, you had to be quiet, slow, and careful. You didn't want to spook them, and though another person and a bunny was different, the technique was the same.

"I'm good with plants, too." He couldn't help but brag a little. "But not from reading....my Momma uses them in her magic. So she taught me." He offered another sharp smile, his twin tails twitching back and forth in his excitement.

"Um...If you want, I can get more books for you after I put mine away?"

User Image Winter tilted her head. Magical properties of plants had been on her list of things she wanted to research. Not really to use them for spells but more for medicinal reasons. "Thats cool. I don't know what my mommy does.. I never asked" . Winter smiled, it was nice of them to offer. "Nah thats okay. I've read... alot of these. Do you like math? I borrowed an algebra book from the senior class section. I've been working on the... uh...quadradic equation." "...quadratic." she corrected herself. "Solving for X". From looks of the other's books they were more into magic, which was fine, just not her cup of tea. She did like plants though and animals. They were fun to read about. Jack rose from his laying position and paced around the other freshling, he was protective of Winter but seemed not to find them a threat, just a curiosity.

Just the mention of Math made him shudder. It was easily his worst subject so far, to the point that it had been suggested that he take extra tutoring for it. As a result, he'd taken to simply memorizing everything and recalling what he needed to, when he needed to. And, sometimes, writing on his arm.

When the spectrefox started inspecting him, he held out a clawed hand carefully. "Hi there." He offered, before turning his attention back to Winter. "I...Don't really like math. There are too many numbers and um...They kinda confuse me." It was kinda hard to admit. He was smart in everything else...except math.

User Image Okay. No math. "Well.." She checks the appendix in her book and turned to chapter 12. "Magical Herbology? You said your mother used plants for magic. These are magic based plants that are used to advance medical care?" Winter paused for a moment. She hadn't be able to have an intelligent conversation with another kid before. Man this was weird. She turned the book facing out ward then sat it on the floor in front of her. "I heard there are college classes on this stuff... dunno which one though...some big kids were talking about it". She hadn't really looked much into herbology and botany yet. The last couple weeks she had been reading the history books mostly. This other kid seemed pretty smart too so she supposed it was okay if they stuck around, shared her books.

Well, he may as well.

Although he already knew most of what the books said thanks to hands-on experience, it was calming and even fun to re-read everything with his new...friend? Could he call her that?

Book after book was pulled until it was time to go home. Even then, he checked out a good armful before he bid his farewells to Winter and made his way to the forest, back to his home to excitedly relay to his mom how he made a new friend!
