Today was a day just like any other day for the young(er) harpy.
Mulling about in the forest understory, sharpening her claws on a tree trunk as she lay listlessly draped along the branches, her eyes aimlessly looked past the branches above to watch small clouds come and go. Surely the view would have been better if she'd flown to the canopy, and she was more than physically able to do so, but the bright light hurt her eyes. This was better, even if the winter winds were further cooled by the shade.
She didnt have much contact with the outside world, and really, she never had.
Back when she was younger - not that she could particularly remember it - she'd wandered here somehow, as if pulled by a sort of force. It was here she'd met mother and her sister. They'd lived here since then, more-or-less together, as they took in life lessons from mother and survived on the day-to-day. It wasn't particularly difficult, nor exciting, but it was all she'd really ever known, and there was no reason to seek out anything further.
All in all, she was content.
If only mother would come home...
It was some seasons ago - how many now? - that she'd last seen mother and her younger sisters. Supposedly they'd left for the city to let someone else know about the twins, though why mother needed to do that was far outside of Hatil's understanding.
Mother had always been mother.
Mother was all she'd ever needed.
Why did the twins need more than that? And why had mother never come back?
This was the driving reason that she and her sister made their way to Venus' festival each year, to search for her. Or, at least that's what it was on paper. Truth be told, enough time had passed that Hatil could scarcely remember mother's face on her own; was she a bad chick after all? But, she didn't particularly worry about that. Surely, if mother came by, she'd know.
More importantly, she'd made a friend.
His name was Valko and she seemed to get to see him every year at the party. They'd met long ago at her first one, back when she was even younger, and they had fun meeting up there ever since. He was such a silly guy, didn't really say much, and last time he'd even brought a flour sack with him! Must not have liked the pillows at the place, though she couldn't fathom why (they were so soft and fluffy after all).
Whatever could he be doing these days, she wondered.

Valko was wandering around the forest, his mother had found him in a forest when he was little and he all ways felt more at home in the woods than anywhere else.
He had stopped by and said hello to his mom before leaving, and partly so he could get a backpack and some supplies. Most of the backpack was taken up by Borkbork. The flour sack he had tried many ways to get rid off but somehow all ways ended up keeping it. At this point he had given up and just decided to take it with him. Plus it was a pretty good pillow when your sleeping in the woods.
If he remembered right, that party for Venus should be coming up soon. The demon's tail wiggled in delight at the thought. He didn't like being around at lot of people but he seemed to run into Hatil every time he went so he was planing on going this year as well. He liked seeing Hatil.Borkbork being a flour sack and all had no issues about being shoved in the bottom of a back pack and promptly covered in stuff. Bork was with Valko and was as content as non-sentient flour sack can be.

The sound of someone - or something - walking below her send the bird twisting on her branch-of-choice and letting an arm fall off to the side as she looked onward. Her eyes had a distinct look of boredom, but now there was ever so slightly the glint of curiosity.
What could be running around at this time?
Sure, it was probably a deer or rabbit or something (like usual), but wouldn't it be more exiting for it to be something else entirely. Though, maybe it would be better if it was a deer. That would solve the question of what they'd be eating for dinner tonight. It was always a pain when it was her turn to hunt (for work) even though she enjoyed the hunt itself (for fun). Especially when Saira insisted they still properly cook the game before eating; wasn't it just easier to gobble it up as-is?

Valko had never been this deep into the woods before. And judging by the fact that he hadn't seen any trash or the like for a while indicated that it was unlikely too many pae when this deep into the woods.
The peaceful woods was a lot less stressful than having to deal with paeple and social norms/customs, which he didn't really get anyways.
He sat down under a rather large tree and rummaged through his bag till he found a snack. A nice peaceful place to eat, he loved the woods.

Narrowing her eyes and straining against the dim understory, it would not be be far from exaggeration to say the harpy's feathers perked up as she noted the familiar look of someone down below.
It was Valko!
Oh how super fun was this?! She wasn't seeing things, right?
Nope. A painful pinch of the cheek confirmed that she was, in fact, awake and alert.
How very super exciting!
Grinning from cheek-to-cheek, Hatil sat upright and stretched her back and wings before leaning forward to fall off the tree branch. As the wind hit her, she extended her wings to catch the breeze and gracefully glide down (it was a lazy sort of day) towards her friend.
How did he even find her?
Well, she did tell him where she lived, after all. That was probably it.
But how cool was this!
Nearing, she cupped her hands around her lips and called out.
"Valkooooooooo~~!✩"

Valko chewed quietly on his food as he sat in the forest. The green pae hadn't thought to look up while he was walking, the only things in the trees where birds n squirles after all.
Hearing his name Valko's head jerked up. It was Hatil. IT WAS HATIL~! His snack, abandoned and his tail wagged happily as he greeted her "Hatil!" What was she doing here?
Wait didn't she say she lived in a forest, was it this forest? Maybe he should have been paying closer attention to the trees, since clearly his bird-friend had been hiding up there.

As Hatil neared the ground, she extended her arms outward and brought her legs forward for impact. Knees bending softly, she stood straight up for a moment as they locked back in place.
Perfect landing.
Nice
Relaxing and letting her arms fall lazily to her side, she turned on her heel to look over at Valko. She bent over at the waist and grabbed behind herself as she did so, her braids falling forward and over her shoulder.
"Hi~"
Now, she could have said something more, but that wouldn't be very Hatil-like of her at all! So instead she stood there with a silly grin plastered to her face.

Hatil! Hatil was here right in front of him! How awesome was that? He wondered where his friend was and bam she just showed up. Amazing.
Her landing was impressive to! She made it seem so easy. Usually he just fell on his face. But not Hatil! She landed on her feet!
He grinned at her as she bent over. "Hi" he repeated a silly grin that almost matched hers on his face.
Suddenly Valko remembered his snack and snatched it up and offered it to Hatil. It must be hard to fly, Where the feather wings lighter than his wings? He tended to keep his wings folded against his back at all times so that they wouldn't get in his way.

Originally tilting her head in response to his scurrying a bit away, Hatil's eyes lit up as her friend presented some food to her. Oh how goodie~ Valko really was the absolute best! Leaning forward, she took a bit outta his snack straight from his hands.
"Mmmm~"
Everything Valko had always tasted so good, even his snack was super tasty~! This was no exception.
Licking her lips as she swallowed, she straightened her back and stared at Valko for a few moments. If she'd a snack of her own to offer, she'd do so, but there was no food on her person! But there was food at home.
If she took him home with her, she could give him food.
Oh! Nice idea!
"Wanna come with me?" There was a bright smile on her face, as if she already knew he was gonna say yes.

Hatil's face when he gave her food was all ways so cute.
He grinned as she gobbled up the snack her gave her.
Go where? Not that it mattered, He'd go any where Hatil wanted. Exploring with her was the best.
"Yes." He agreed nodding his head as he got to his feet and made sure to pack his bag up and it was securely faced before putting it on his back.
Once that was done he looked back at her and grinned, a sign he was ready to go!

Yes yes, that' was good! Now they could go back to her place and she'd get him yummy snacks. Saira shoulda been finishing up smoking the deer she'd recently caught (that's part of the reason she was gone; the smoke made her head hurt and it would get hard to breath sometimes! no fun!). Maybe they could eat some of that. There was probably some dried fruits and stuff too.... Mmm... Maybe a soup?
Yeah, soup could be good. They could always make the meat go further with that. They were still working on rebuilding their smoked stash that had helped them through the winter, so they couldn't go only eating it until they were full.
As much as she'd love to just eat it raw.
Just a little while longer and she'd get to eat as much meat as she wanted again... Once the game got a bit plumper and had (mostly) finished their breeding.
Either way. They were having soup tonight. It was decided.
Nodding to herself, she reached forward to grab Valko's hand and pull him behind her; had to make sure he wouldn't get lost after all~

Hatil made no effort to explain their destination or how far it was. Oh was it a surprise?
No, you have to plan surprises in advance right? It was probably just something cool Hatil had found.
Ahhhh she was holding his hand! He tried to stifle the happy wiggling of his tail as he held his friends hand.
Soon after his hand was grabbed they headed off to where ever they where going.
How exciting! He wondered what could be this deep into the forest.
A logical train of thought would be, Hatil lives in the forest, they are in a forest, Hatil is taking them somewhere, Hatil is taking him to her home. Sadly this was not something he thought about.

Hatil hummed happily as she continued onward, hand-in-hand with her friend in tow. It was a happy day. Valko was here. And he was gonna get meat!
Yay~!
Not one to force the conversation, she continued mostly in silence for some time. Eventually, though, the smell of smoke could be detected in the air. It would grow as they continued further and eventually came to a little hut in the woods.
What had initially started as a makeshift shack had grown over the years into quite the shelter. A combination of hardwood framing and a dried soil-clay mixture made the outside walls of the abode; its frame had clearly been widened as necessary to stretch further and accommodate more space. the trees of the forest served as the foundation stakes in the structure; by doing so, it allowed the walls to go several stories into the air. A combination of vines and leaves held the upper stories and roof in place. Upon closer inspection, it could be noted that the roof was not actually attached to the structure, but was rather suspended from the branches above. Deer and other animal skins made the roof and appeared to be slowly being added to cover the outside, while a number of animals (including birds and squirrels) seemed to have made the higher spots their home. Some sort of reed appeared to have been woven together to form both a doorway and movable blinds.
In looking at it, there was a smaller fort of a similar nature a little ways away. It lacked the windows of the prior one and had a flavorful smoke seeping out of a chimney. Unlike the larger structure, entering this one would reveal that it was dug into the ground and went a decent distance into the cool soil below, where food was both stored in the short-term and allowed to ferment. The upper level held a facility for wood-fire cooking.
There were a number of small plots in the front, mostly fallow at the moment, where they would plant berry seeds come early spring. For now, weeds and other underbrush had grown over it.
Looking over at Valko, she offered a grin and let go of his hand. "We're here~!"

A comfortable silence fell between the two friends as they made their way deeper into the woods. There was the smell of smoke in the air, since Hatil didn't seem worried it probably wasn't a forest fire. 'It seemed to be getting stronger as they walked.
Then he saw the buildings built into and against the trees. Oooh! So this was Hatil's place! He looked around taking it all in. It was amazing! All woodsy and home-y at the same time! It was better than he's mother's place! No offence to her but he liked woods better than normal houses.
"Good!" He told his friend with a nod. Not good that they where here, although it was good. But meaning that he liked the place. He wondered what the building the smoke was coming out of was for. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the campfire outside or in the main house?

Hatil nodded back and mimicked her friend's comment of 'good' before laughing and looking back up at the roof of the house. She'd agree... It was a good place, all in all.
Only thing that was missing was mother and her sisters, but they'd surely be back one day.
It was her responsibility to keep things looking good until then.
In glancing back, she noticed Valko making eyes at the smoking house. Skipping over to his side, she offered to take his bag and set it by the front of the house before taking his hand once again to pull him to the side shack. "This is the cookin house!" she proudly exclaimed as the approached it. Looked like either Saira wasn't around or she was ignoring the pair for now.
