Prompt
Your Christmas cookies turned out great for once! There was no burning or dropping of the batter and now you have dozens of cookies just waiting to be eaten or given out as gifts. However, as you leave the cookies to cool and go about your business, the smell of gingerbread seems to follow you, no matter if you made gingerbread cookies or not. A strange feeling as though someone is watching you takes over and from time to time you swear that you can hear a strange little voice saying the same thing over and over. “You can’t catch me”. The feeling passes after a few hours, but it might be best to avoid gingerbread for the rest of the holiday season…just in case.
Christmas time was always super strange and almost kinda lonely for Benji Rhodes. It wasn't so much that he hated Christmas cheer or how many people seemed to go out of their way to do something nice for another person. On the contrary, he had many fond memories of the holidays, atleast for a while. These past few years though just felt colder and colder, to the point where he wasn't even sure if he should he celebrating anything.
Before more recent times, friends were hard to come by. There wasn't any sort of group meetings at the mall or just parusing about time looking for gifts for one another. Nope, it was just him. Alone. Skulking about and not really looking to by anything at all. Who would he have bought gifts for anyway? He had no friends, and his family was all s**t too, so no one deserved anything! And besides, he was jack s**t broke anyway so it all worked out in the end, he supposed.
But THIS year was different! While he wasn't super Mr. Popular, he had a few friends that he actually found himself looking forward to seeing. Good friends, the kind that helped him through all sorts of s**t and didn't once ask too much about him or pry into his mind. Okay, well, Maybe sometimes they did, but it was more often than not for the best. If it weren't for them... Maybe he'd be alone and hurting again this year... Or even worse, corrupted because he became reckless for no reason except to maybe make someone care. Benji had already learned that never worked, and thankfully his friends seemed more ready to shake that stupid feeling out of him than let him keep going on thinking that no one cared.
He knew they cared now... And Dammit, he cared for them too.
Maybe that's why he was going out of his way in prepping to make a goddamn mess.
He was broke as s**t, as always, even after having worked almost every single day after classes, so he couldn't really afford something really nice as gifts to his friends. But he could afford some sugar and ginger and other baking stuff in order to make something! Things seemed to be extra cheap this time of year too, sales on all the necessities for cookies made his wallet jingle with joy. Still, there was another issue he had no idea how to handle. How the ******** was baking supposed to work?
Yes, it was chemistry, essentially, and yes there were instructions, but after the first batch came out tasting like s**t, he needed to recruit some real help. And there was only one person he really trusted to know that he was actually s**t at something. Well, two, but only one who he trusted to know what to do in a kitchen. Maybe.
After sending her a few pleading (yet of course still angry in his natural Benji way) text messages, that blessed darling of a friend Raleigh agreed to come by his dorm to try to recover from this massacre of gingerbread families. The thought that it might be a little strange to someone that he invited a girl to the dorms, especially when he was there alone and it was just a little past dark never even crossed his mind. No, it was far too filled with thinking how much he ******** hated baking so far.
So great was his hatred of those angry little burnt gingerfamiles, that he didn't even feel the cold as he stood outside, waiting for Raleigh to arrive. The cold and snow couldn't put out this flame!
