There was a break between shows at the little theater where Fleur had been working, just enough for people to get in some family visits and that kind of thing. Of course, that meant that Fleur had immediately scheduled a shift here, at the animal shelter.

On the way over, she'd noticed that the temperature had lowered once again. She'd scowled as she opened her front door to a blast of frigid air and had to trek back up her stairs to throw on another round of warm clothing, but after adding a hat and a scarf and letting her hair down for once, for that extra bit of layering, she felt reasonably prepared. She was going to be mostly inside, after all, with a bunch of warm, fluffy animals. It would be fine. She didn't think much of how the runoff had frozen into heavy icicles on the edges of roofs and on the power line. She noticed them, but only had a passing thought that they were pretty. She'd forgotten, just for a moment, that nothing was ever, ever fine.

She was in the kennel of the first dog, trying to get his food, water, and walk. "Brutus, huh?" She said to him, scratching behind his ear. "Who's a handsome boy?" He was older and a pit mix, so not very adoptable. It looked like he'd been in here for awhile. She thought he could use some love. He gave her a doggie smile and licked her.

Then, everything went black. There was about a second of sheer panic. Fleur did not love surprises given her life experience, but all right. This was blackout . Just a blackout. She pulled a mini flashlight out of her purse.

"Um... is anyone else in here?" she called.

Sunny was, nominally, minding her own business - well, as much as she could ever really mind her own business when doing a shift at an animal shelter, which was very little. It was good, to make sure she was aware of her surroundings, even if it was a slower day - everyone who was buying Christmas puppies (or returning their Christmas puppies, which always made her particularly angry, but what could she do? She didn't have time, money, or space for an animal; all she could do was make sure time at the shelter was good for the poor things, as good as it could be) had already managed that, and it was the transitory period of the year. The scariest thing facing her was the snow outside, and the time it took to put on a decent jacket and general cold-weather gear.

Or, at least, that was usually the answer. When the lights flickered for a second and promptly fizzled out of functioning, she fumbled around in her pockets for her phone until her fingers closed around the thin shape. Finding the flashlight app, then, was easy. Finding the coworker calling out - that took a minute. "I'm here, just give me a minute!"

They were alone in the building, Sunny thought, and had the unpleasant realization that if this blackout went on for too long she was about to have some very large problems relating to keeping the dogs warm. It was a cold, cold day - the building wasn't designed to retain heat for very long - but what could she do? It probably wasn't a problem with the building itself but a problem with the power lines, and whereas she could theoretically fix a fuse box or a wire that had gotten kinked out of place, a power line was far beyond her capabilities.

"Sorry about that - " she swept her beam of light across the area, leaning back against the wall, looking at Fleur and keeping a calm face. "Getting around this place in the dark is the worst."

Somebody answered. Fleur let out the breath she had been holding. She was used to uncomfortable situations, but it was so nice when she didn't have to be alone in a dark, cage filled room by herself. Also, she didn't hear anyone tripping or otherwise getting hurt. Even the barks and whines from the dogs, while heart-wrenching and hard to listen too, seemed to be at their normal level, not a panicked cacophony.

She gave a quick nod as the bright faced woman stepped into her flashlight beam. "It's fine. Being safe is the important thing." She glanced up at the overhead florescent. They did not appear to be flickering back to life under her gaze. This was not some little kink in the system. This was something very wrong. Most likely deep, deep, snow wrong. That meant they were sort of isolated, too.

She allowed herself a moment of dread. She put a hand on the concrete wall and leaned into it. "This is not good. I'm not sure what to do, and I believe we're the only two here at the moment," she said. Then, she straightened and tried to think. "This is a public building. I think that means there should be generators?" she said, but she didn't sound confident. Electricity was not her area of expertise. Still, especially with all the dogs living here, heat was sort of an important thing.

I got quoted in this again. We can continue if you'd like, sorry for missing this.

"Generators," Sunny repeated firmly with a conviction she didn't really feel, "that sounds about right, uh -- this isn't big enough to have an electrical room but there should be something - I didn't hear any glass breaking or anything, so. So that means the snow probably just knocked a wire out or something?" The grin she offered Fleur was more than a little awkward, but it was well-meaning. "All the tinkering I do myself is limited to small electronics, I don't know enough to trust myself with whatever we've got going on here."

She took a deep breath to center herself and clicked her tongue, looking around, eyes scanning from cage to cage. "My bet is that it's probably nothing to do with this building, specifically? But there is a lot of snow out there, so something probably just got knocked down or out or." Sunny shrugged. "You know. Also we could probably get in trouble for tinkering when we're not supposed to. We probably have twenty, thirty minutes before this is a real actual problem, but I have a battery for my phone, so between the two of us we can probably get food and water done for at least half?"

Fleur closed her eyes and pressed her lips together tightly, trying to think. She knew about a cleaning closet with a mishmash of maintenance supplies in the back. If there was a generator there was a good chance it would be in there somewhere. Her eyes blinked back open at the mention of trouble, though. She gave a short nod. "Right."

They were volunteers. They didn't have that kind of authority, even if Fleur had been coming here for years no w and Sunny seemed to know a few things about electronics. The fact that it was an emergency meant that there was just more that they could mess up if they made the wrong call and did something stupid. Fleur gritted her teeth and exhaled through her nose.

Sunny's practicality brought her back into the moment. It was true that this wasn't exactly desperate. They could still do their jobs. "I can get the water," she offered. "If this doesn't clear up in a few minutes we can try to call and ask what to do," she said, and then with a polite smile, she turned to the cage of Buttons, the first dog.

Daekie
works for me! This can be a wrap.
