Quote:
Your Christmas cookies turned out great for once! There was no burning or dropping of the batter and now you have dozens of cookies just waiting to be eaten or given out as gifts. However, as you leave the cookies to cool and go about your business, the smell of gingerbread seems to follow you, no matter if you made gingerbread cookies or not. A strange feeling as though someone is watching you takes over and from time to time you swear that you can hear a strange little voice saying the same thing over and over. “You can’t catch me”. The feeling passes after a few hours, but it might be best to avoid gingerbread for the rest of the holiday season…just in case.

Reinerite was not in a good mood - in fact it was safe to say that Reinerite was in a extremely bad mood and that was saying something given that the time of year tended to put her in a bad mood anyway.

She had been supposed to return to the UK for the Christmas break, but had decided to stay in Destiny City instead and whilst neither her father or her mother were happy about the decision, they had allowed her to do so - on the condition that she return in time to see in the New Year–

And whilst she would have preferred to spend the whole of the Christmas break in the States, she had a feeling that that would be a step too far for her parents - and for her father in particular.

She had planned to spend the time holed up in the apartment she was renting and pretend that Christmas was not happening around her, having figured that if she only ventured out for food that she would at least avoid the worst of the Christmas period–

Well that and venture out as Reinerite given that her quota was not going to gather itself - but even so it was still a relatively foolproof plan - or so she had thought.

At least up to the point where she had decided to make gingerbread.

It wasn't being christmassy she told herself as she carefully followed the recipe that she had googled as Ashley to the letter and whilst cooking and baking weren't her strong point, the cookies had turned out pretty okay–

But as she had puttered about the apartment, the smell of gingerbread had continued to linger - even after the gingerbread was stone cold.

Even that she would probably been able to ignore, but the voice that had started up chanting 'You can't catch me' had been the last straw–

Which was how she had come to be out as Reinerite - and no she totally wasn't running away from the weirdo voice or the gingerbread - totally, totally wasn't.

Instead she was out to drain energy gather donations on the behalf of the Negaverse, especially if she came across anyone who seemed particularly christmassy.

Or alternatively she was quite happy to put any Order pests in their place - whichever she came across first.

Destiny City was, suffice it to say, bizarre.

As Penrose Lovelace, he'd left the Moonrise Circus relatively early in the evening, and had slipped into the guise of Lieutenant Quintinite closely afterwards. It still felt somewhat strange; he wasn't used to the uniform, the magic, or any of it, but at least it wasn't unpleasant; he did, after all, like the theatrics of things.

It was also a little strange to feel people as he could now; a taste of the power signatures, of their so-called auras. Quintinite could feel it now, snaking around him, fluttering through the air - it felt the same as his own, but a little stronger, a little more powerful in a way he wasn't used to but that felt oddly curious.

He found the bearer of the power signature shortly after in the form of a blue haired young woman making her way down a side street. Quintinite stepped out to meet her, letting his gaze roam up and down her uniform, his face quite placid.

"Good evening," he said blithely, in the clipped, smooth tones of an upper class London accent. "Can I help you with anything?"

Reinerite stepped away from the alleyway and from the two drunken revellers that lay slumped by the trash cans, absently tucking away the orbs of energy that she had gathered as she did so.

The duo had made the mistake of approaching her with a little too much Christmas cheer and she had figured that given that they had the energy to be so annoyingly cheerful that they obviously had too much energy.

Not that it mattered anymore, since the energy she had gathered would be put to much better uses - and came with the added benefit that it had stopped the singing - and the comments about how her outfit looked like something out of the Nutcracker–

But it unfortunately hadn't done anything about the damned smell of gingerbread that seemed still be lingering around or the stupid voice that kept piping up at intervals.

She glanced around as it chose that moment to pipe up again, grey eyes glancing around sharply - but once again - as on all the previous occasions there was nothing.

And maybe it was someone's idea of a bad joke, although if so then she couldn't think on who it was - because there weren't that many people who knew her as both Ashley and Reinerite - at least not that she knew of.

If it was a joke and she did find the culprit(s) however she had every intention of making them sorry.

She had turned down a side street and was making her way down it on the off chance that she would come across some more potential energy donors when she picked up on the Lieutenant's aura and it seemed that the source wasn't that far away because she was still walking down the side street when she heard the voice.

She turned, grey eyes taking in the heart details on the red and black of his uniform, the outfit making her think of something out of Alice in Wonderland.

"Good evening Lieutenant" she said, her own voice coloured with the years that she had spent in the British private school system, and whilst she didn't smile her voice wasn't unfriendly. "Your accent - do you happen to come from the UK by any chance?"

Strangely, Quintinite could also sense a peculiar scent that seemed to be wafting through the air towards him. He wasn't quite sure where it was coming from, other than the fact that it was faintly Christmassy and a little aggravating; there was a definite sense of uneasiness that lingered about that made him annoyed, irrationally so.

But at least he'd found someone else to speak to, someone, as luck would have it, that seemed to be from the same place as he was - or rather, from the same continent, he should say. Quintinite's gaze moved across the woman's face, the casual conversation flowing easily.

A smile touched his lips.

"London," he said, by way of confirming this. "Born and raised. Might I assume that you're also not from around here?"

It was said somewhat sardonically, a touch of sarcasm that was almost universally a part of Quintinite's overall persona. He held out a hand to the woman, feeling her aura waft over him, the same as his own; Chaos, they had called it.

"Quintinite. Call me anything you'd like, I generally find Queenie to be rather entertaining. And you are...?"

"You may" Reinerite agreed, her lips quirking up in an answering smile. "I am not a Londoner myself, but I went to school there and so spent a lot of time there - mainly in Central London."

There was also the fact that while she - like her older sister - had been a boarder at the school, her father also had a house in Camden where she had spent time during some of the holidays.

She reached out to take the offered hand, her own grip firm but not crushing "Nice to meet you Quintinite" she said, her grey eyes amused, a part of her assuming that the mentioned name Queenie was a take on the hearts that made up his uniform.

"My name is Reinerite when I am like this - or in more formal Negaverse settings Captain Reinerite" although she didn't count right now as particularly formal.

And whilst the smell of gingerbread was still there, it seemed to at least be fading a little–

At least Reinerite certainly hoped that the damned smell was starting to fade.

It was pleasing to find someone else in the vicinity that wasn't from around here; it made everything feel just a little bit more welcoming, in spite of the fact that he had his troupe to fall back on when he needed to talk to anyone. Quintinite gave Reinerite's hand a squeeze, brows raising.

"Captain sounds impressive," he said, smile tilting a little, lazy on his face. "That's the higher level of ranking, isn't it? Considering that I'm Lieutenant, so it must be that Captain comes after. And I heard tale that General is above that as well."

The smell of gingerbread wafted thicker towards them, then faded again, back to a low, muted scent. Quintinite frowned.

"Do you smell that?"

Reinerite nodded at the question about Negaverse ranking "It is" she confirmed. "And it comes with its perks - like teleportation" and also a better weapon - which in her case was one that she could now do more with than try to bonk people with or use it as a glorified trip aid.

The smile faded to a frown of her own as the smell of gingerbread suddenly flared back up, complete with the annoying voice "The gingerbread?" And whilst framed as a question, it wasn't one - not really.

"Unfortunately yes - but I have no idea where it's coming from."

Quintinite blinked.

"Teleportation?" he repeated, trying to work through this thought in his head, eyebrows arching. "As in...like the movies? One can simply disappear and reappear wherever they want? That's quite useful...I don't suppose I could do that at this particular rank, could I?"

He would have made an attempt at trying, if he wasn't so sure he would look dumb doing it. Besides, Reinerite had said that it was a perk of being promoted, which likely meant it was something only above him that could do it. A shame, maybe, but at least it would spur him to be productive.

Maybe.

Quintinite wrinkled his nose. "Well, I'm glad it's not just me. And I'm glad it's not just me that thinks it's gingerbread, it's quite a distinct scent, and we haven't got much else to smell except the snow or the grass, so it's a little bit overwhelming right now."

He glanced around himself, hands folding across his chest.

"Maybe we should move a little farther away. Think that could help?"

Reinerite smiled "Well not quite as in the movies" she admitted. "You can't teleport to somewhere random - you have to know the place where you are teleporting to - but it's a useful ability."

She shook her head at the next part of the question "No it's not something that can be done as a Lieutenant" although it was an ability that Lieutenant Reinerite would have loved to have had - especially when it came to quota turn ins.

"I'm not sure but I hope so" and at least it certainly couldn't hurt.

Either way, Reinerite knew that that after today gingerbread was going on her 'must avoid list' because between the smells and the random 'can't catch mes' she had had more than enough of the holiday biscuit.

Apologies Kuro - thought I'd write an official fin on this one - somehow I missed doing so last year
