He wasn't asleep.
Strictly speaking, Wendell was awake, but he llooked asleep, draped over the branch of the tree like a limp noodle, Wendell's eye closed. Around him, snow fell in soft waves; it hadn't risen more than about an inch or so, but it was starting to fall more thickly, the night air chilled.
Wendell, on the other hand, looked quite content where he was up in the tree.

Lace had been dragging a rather large box with a rather large ribbon through the park. Though it was snowing and her small kitten body was cold, the dragging was enough activity to keep her okay! Plus the fluff on her neck helped!
In the box though, was a cake. She had heard of them. Christmas cakes. They were special during the holidays and last year Sera had given her one!
So she was dragging one to take to him to share! Though the box seemed to be getting dirtied and ruin. Maybe it'd be better to-
"Oh no!" She cried out because she felt the aura of order and looked around. If a senshi or one of the knights saw her, they'd try to take her or something! "I...If you are a bad person!" The kitten called out, "Please...don't hurt me!"

Wendell's head snapped up.
Within a second he was suddenly vertical on the branch, and within another second he'd tumbled off of said branch, because there wasn't exactly room to jump up so suddenly and he lost his balance.
There was a whoomphing noise as a sleek brown and gold shape fell into the grass beside the kitten, leaving a cat shaped hole in the snow. A second later, his head popped up, a jingle of coins accompanying the shake of his head as Wendell leapt back upright, nose whipping around to figure out who was there.
"Ah! A little one!"
The rest of the kitten's words finally penetrated. "I would never hurt you!" Wendell said, sounding aghast, and bounded forward to loom over her, eye alight with meaning. "You're much too cute to be mean to! What's your name? Let me help you! I'm Wendell," he added proudly.

Lace just watched all this happen from her spot in the snow with a wary careful eye.
As soon as the cat dropped though, he was back up and looking at her. Little one he called her, and she was certainly little compared to the full grown cat.
"E...e...excuse me!" She squeaked as he came over, immediately diving down and covering her head with her paws in case he attacked. "O....oh?"
She peeked up and then shuffled back a little before taking a deep breath. "B..but you're an order...order cat." She waited, "Don...Don't you hate...hate cats like me?"

She was so tiny. Tiny and fluffy and of course very sweet because tiny and fluffy things had to definitely be sweet, and Wendell was very definitely sure that she was tiny and fluffy and sweet. He was very definitely not sure that she wasn't afraid of him, because she looked positively terrified.
Wendell gave her a scandalized look.
"No!" he said, with a gasp of horror. "I could never hate anyone, especially a cat! I don't want to hate anyone, and you are literally the loveliest little kitten I have ever seen! You're quite a bit too pretty to be hated, I don't care what side you're on!"
He gave the box a quick glance.
"What's that? Did you find buried treasure?"

"Oh...well um..." Lace blushed, as much as a cat could blush. He was so friendly. "Thank...thank you?" She looked over at the box and debated. She wanted it to be a gift for Sera but she thought she might go back to Dia and ask for one she could carry through negaspace.
Instead of the one that had been left on a random sweet shop.
"It...It sort of is!" She tugged at the ribbon and then went over and opened the lid.
"It...it's a cake!" It was a pretty messed up strawberry cake, with the words "happy anniversary" written on it.
She came back to sit and look at it though. "But I don't think I'll make it home before it gets ruined....." She pointed with her paw at the now wet sides of the box..."See, its gonna get wet....."

He offered the kitten a wide, beaming smile. "You're very welcome!" said Wendell brightly, because it was important to make sure that people - and cats - knew that they were appreciated. Especially small little ones like this kitten clearly was.
Wendell padded over to peer into the box alongside the kitten and stared at the cake with his head tilted to one side, ear twitching slightly. "What is it?" he asked curiously. "It's very lovely! It looks like very nice treasure indeed; are you giving it to someone? Who's anniversary is it?"
He beamed at the kitten then gave a gasp.
"Did you need help? I shall help you. I can't leave you here to take this yourself to your destination, I will escort you, milady!"
