Christmas shopping for Beatrice Kellye was never exactly fun.
No, she preferred the route of homemade presents but when one procrastinated as long as she did when it came to making things, sometimes you had to do some actual shopping to get the job done. Kind of.
Thankfully, Marnie the Magnificent had been available to help when she'd set her little feelers out in search of helpers. Her presence would come mostly in the form of company but Bea also figured it didn't hurt to have a second opinion when it came time to find some test subjects for her winter round of create-a-monster. She was known for her array of little beasties for besties, so why not get some advice as to what new creatures she should make next, right?
"So I've got...." A single finger jabbed down the scribbled list as dark eyes narrowed, "Fiv...six....seven people to shop for. Gonna Frankenstein this stuff up this year."
Glancing back at the older girl, Bea grinned as they shuffled their way out of the cold winter air into the local toystore. Finding bases was always the easy part. Figuring out what part went where.... that was another story altogether. "You want a monster too this year, right?"

Marnie had been coaxed out of her cozy, warm apartment by her insistent friend. When the request for help had first come along, she'd been lounging in the living room half of her studio apartment with a cat on her pelvis and her laptop on her stomach, scrolling through a recently updated tumblr feed.
She'd been reeeeeeaaallly tempted to ignore the message. Getting up and putting on clothes seemed like so much effort and she was cozy.
Still, it was Bees whom she always had a hard time saying no to. So she said yes, which meant she had to get up and get ready, right then, if she wanted to be ready in the next hour.
Marnie had an aesthetic she had to live up to.
By the time Bees had shown up, Marnie had her hair up in her signature buns with the rest of the ombre flowing freely and a pastel sweater dress, tights, and ballet shoes that matched the tips of her hair.
"Seven, what are you doing B collecting all these newbies." She whined, even as she peered at the list over the pale haired girl's shoulder. "And, um, yeah. I expect one."

"You let the cat get ahold of this one and I swear I'm gonna stuff your underwear drawer with catnip."
The idle threat was matched with a playful look as Bea quickly grabbed the other teenager's wrist and tugged her forward, despite having no clue where exactly she was headed to first. "I'll make one for him too, to make it even. Baby monster for the baby monster."
While the aisles were marked clearly with large print, neither girl needed any assistance on where to find whatever it was they needed. Bea could probably journey through the entire place blindfolded and know her way around. The toy store, out of all the shops in Destiny City, definitely got the majority of the white haired girl's allowance.
"Barbies or plushies first?" She mused aloud, halting directly in the middle of their path, leaving Marnbarn little time to recover from the sudden stop. "Plushies would probably be cheaper, yeah?"

"S'not my fault Rasputin is sneaky and get into things he shouldn't," Marnie huffed, making a point to roll her eyes at the younger girl. "I swear, it's like he has thumbs or something sometimes. Did I tell you he got into momma's treat jar, again?" She had no idea how he managed that considering it was a twistable seal that she knew she'd done all the way.
Sneaky cat.
"You should. Momma's gettin him a nice fancy cat bed, he could def use a cuddle buddy." Hell, Marnie could use a cuddle buddy sometimes. "Oh, I'm getting some new herbs and stuff, you outta come by and help me perform a cleansing. I am sooo sick of this gloom winter's tryin' to hold over me. Like, seriously sick of it B." Marnie waved a hand as her legs carried her down the aisle, glancing this way and that for her favorite one.
"Seriously B, you gotta ask me that." She shook her head, rolling her eyes again before pointing at the large sign that would lead them to the plush toys. "Plushies, like always. The new monster high dolls have been so slow at coming out there's probably nothing good there."

"Bet he had a ghost help him. Cats have a bond, a bond."
It was a theory she was still working on, bonus points if it wigged Marnie the Fearless out even just a little bit. Sure, cats were associated with witches and crap and supposedly, like dogs, could see the dead but...well, Rasputin was also just kind of a d**k cat and more than likely opened the treat jar just to be a greedy little puss.
Shrugging her shoulders, she nodded her head as thoughts of their last cleansing came to mind, pivoting her sneakers in the direction of the stuffed animals. "Don't forget the lavender though. No stinky stuff."
Witchcraft never came with warnings that most of the spells would smell like trash and foot cheese.
"I always feel kind of bad, choppin' those up." One hand gestured towards the Monster High dolls on a nearby display. Same old stuff, nothing new - like Marnzilla had already pointed out. "They already come packaged up as monsters, y'know, feels kind of counterproductive monsterfying something that's already perfectly horrible."
Not like her plushies. No - each was horrific in its own special way.
"Any suggestions on what to start with?"

"Nah, Rasputin's just clever like that." Hands were tucked behind her head as they walked, fingers sliding into lavender locks to toy with strands between her fingers. "S'what makes him a good familiar for me, duh." Marnie said it like it was obvious fact and that she expected Bees to be smarter.
"Ugh," she whined and if she'd been a toddler she might have stomped her feet, but she wasn't so she just hunched forward and let her arms hang out before her. "How about you bring over the lavender. I don't want to make another trip to the store."
She could only handle a maximum of two shopping trips a week and she'd already done both this week. If Bees wanted nice smelling stuff, she'd have to provide it.
"Oh, we need to go to the graveyard soon, visit g-ma, need some dirty for goofer dust." Pale eyes glanced over at the dolls, some of them marked with a red clearance label that only knocked a dollar or two off. Not worth it. "Nah, they're the best ones to paint and mess with. We just make 'em better."
Once faced with all of the stuffed animals she pursed her lips together and gave it some serious thought.
"You need a giraffe monster, for sure."

She wrinkled her nose at the comment, mentally going over in her head how much something like lavender or rose oil would cost - she'd scrimped and saved parts of her allowance just to afford these dolls... would she have enough for some smell-stuff too?
"Not all of us are cool enough to live alone, Marnzipone."
The chastise was lighthearted as the teenager crouched to the ground, digging through the boxes and shelves of fortunate (and unfortunate) looking critters. The plushies were never on sale, though sometimes a deal could be haggled when a toy was found with a missing eye or scuff mark thanks to Bea (and by Bea she meant Marnie, who was way better about deal making).
"Giraffes aren't common - look for one though, I like that idea."
A giraffe, where the face was replace with that of a cat. Huh. Inspiring.
Teddy bears and puppy dogs were tossed left and right as she continued to dig through her colorful options. Nothing called out to her yet, but if she couldn't find the perfect one, she'd have to settle with semi-perfect, this late in the game.
"What're you doing for the holidays anyways?"

"S'not my fault," Marnie replied with a shrug, stepping up to the array of stuffed creatures to shuffle through them. Long fingers, painted to match her hair, picked through teddy bears and elephants and other boring things, including a scrunch-faced dog, looking for the animal she had in mind.
"Figure out some way to earn the dolla bills Baby B, donate plasma or something, you can't mooch off of me and the other girls forever." She paused in her digging to turn mint eyes towards her companion. She blinked once, then arched a brow in a you dig manner.
Finally her nails caught ahold of a creature with a long neck at the back of the pile. Just a little more and...ah-ha out came a decent looking giraffe, one that would be perf for Bees.
"Boom," she puffed proudly, shoving the creature at her bestie with grin. "Found one~" She chirped in a sing-song voice, clearly pleased with herself.
"Dunno, mom's on flight duty," she wrinkled her nose and shrugged. "Won't be home for Christmas and y'know I can depend on dad to actually be a dad."

She stuck her tongue out at the older girl and blew raspberries in the teenager’s general direction, debating the merits of tossing one of the ugly dog toys directly at her.
“Can't donate crap, not eighteen yet. Pretty sure you can't give away any organs or ooze from a body until ya hit eighteen.”
Her lips pursed, Bea obviously miffed by this information and having checked up on it before their current conversation. “Wanted to start an Etsy. Mom doesn't trust the internet.”
Collecting a generic looking cat and a strange looking owl, she added them to her lap as fingers perused for a few more future victims. As she dug, her idle questions continued.
“Could always stay over with me, if you wanted? No sense in having to spend the holidays alone, dude.”

Marnie rolled her eyes at Beekay. "Bet your mom would sign forms and stuff." Realistically, she didn't care because her bestie was good with what money she got and she supposed she could front the bill if she got paid back eventually.
Really, it wasn't fair of her to complain about Bees being a mooch when she just racked up her mom's credit card most of the time.
She earned money, sometimes, but her focus was on college and she didn't spend much so her mom let her do whatever. Plus, her dad was a s**t dad so he tried to compensate by sending her money. It totally didn't make up for his s**t daddyness but it let her buy things so it kinda counted.
"I could do the etsy, but you gotta give me at least half." She looked at the pale haired girl with an I'm super serious look. "You use my place for all that junk anyway."
She stopped yabbering when Bea offered to let her come over. "Oh, nah, Rasp and I will just binge some of those santa horror flicks. Don't worry bout me."

"You? Who's worried about you - maybe I'm the one in need of company."
One of the unfortunate looking teddy bears was promptly launched in the taller girl's direction, Bea making an agile attempt at aiming for her beautiful, ombre hair. It wasn't fair that she got to make her hair look all spiffy and colorful... then again, even if her mom let her color her hair, Bea had no idea what color she'd even choose to work with.
In truth, she didn't like the idea of anyone - living or non - spending such a festive time alone. It wasn't right - this was how people ended up getting all suicidal and killin' themselves and then became ghosts with unfinished jobs doomed to wander the Earth for all of eternity because they screwed up with they were eighteen.
Yeah, no, Marnie didn't get to go ghost unless Bea did. Dem's the rules.
"You got Krampus? Ma won't let me see Krampus, but it sounds like it'd be a Christmas classic."

Marnie stepped back and the teddy hit the floor pathetically before them. Lips pursed together and she looked disapprovingly at her bestie before shaking her head. "Come on Beecakes," she sighed, bending over to pluck the poor thing off the ground and shove it back onto the messy shelving.
"If you wanna come over after family stuff, you know I wouldn't mind." Of course it was a matter if Bea's mom would let her. Despite the girl's attempts, Marnie was used to spending holidays alone with her cat. It wasn't so bad, really, and she'd gotten pretty good at timing her orders so that she had food for the holiday without having to cook if she could avoid it.
"Course I do, it's not Christmas without Krampus," she huffed, closing the space between them and slinging her arm around B's shoulders. "C'mon, let's get the rest of your stuff and we can order Chinese off of mom's card and watch something at my place kay?"

Making another face, she collected her prizes and used her foot to toe one of the loose critters back up onto the lower shelf. It took a little bit of head-calculating to figure out an approximate cost of her shopping so far - eh, wouldn't be able to get too many dolls now, but at least she had some decent bases.
"I want a dozen Chinese donuts this time," she immediately contributed upon hearing the words chinese takeout, "We're talking just me, I wanna see if a sugar rush of that kind of proportion'll keep me going through these."
Arms gestured towards the small army of plushies now cuddled away against her chest. "And orange chicken. I want orange chicken."
The younger girl started making her way towards the doll section, in turn dragging along the attached girl with her. There were several options to go with when it came to dolls - thankfully the knockoff brands were fairly cheap and had a variety of skintones to work with.
It wasn't a Christmas plushie without some extra limbs, after all.

"Ugh, fine. But you have to do the ordering, they already think I'm that fat kid regular with how much we always get." Marnie was definitely exaggerating but this way Beebee would have to do all the heavy lifting and she could sit back and chill with Rasputin. A win-win for her.
"Orange chicken is always a must, duh." No american eating Chinese was complete without orange chicken, it was the classic staple. "I want flat noodles too, lo mein, got it?"
Despite the fact that Marnie enjoyed looking at the selection of dolls that the toy store tended to carry she was already about to hit empty on her adventure meter for the day and was dragging her feet after her friend.
"Beecakes, will you puh-lease hurry up. I am about to crash if we don't wrap this up."

"Lo mein, cho mein, sloooow mein, whatever Marn. You'll get it, you'll get it."
Shuffling the toys in her arms, she scrunched her nose as she glanced down the doll aisle. She was getting close to budget already but a couple of the inexpensive knock-off Barbies would work out just fine for what she needed - at least, she hoped so. Might have to amputate some of her own critters to make up the difference if push came to shove.
"Yeah, we're ready," she huffed as she forced three dolls into her buddy's arms before making her way towards the cash register. "I'll be the fat kid this time but you get to do all the measuring jobs."
Feeling smug with her decision, the teenager dropped all her toys on the register conveyor belt and pulled out her wallet.
Overall, it wasn't as bad of a trip as she worried it might have been. In fact...she ended up with five dollars more than she thought she would.
Not bad at all!
