Avatar Story: Christmas in Australia can be tough- it's hot, so you're hot, and all the Christmas treats like chocolate fudge and rocky road and white Christmas gets melty; nobody wants a lovely hot lunch; if you put your tree too close to a window the light will reflect off the baubles and blind you, burn you if you touch it, if you turn the lights on they overheat, or the tree will straight up just MELT (we have almost exclusively plastic trees here, you guys. No pine trees. Not a thing); all the Christmas carols are about snow and Christmas sweaters are impractical; if you grow up in Tasmania, like your humble Em did, you're so close to Antarctica that it's only sunset at 9pm and you have to try and convince yourself that it's time to sleep so Santa can rock up; and mums and dads everywhere have to explain that Santa has ninja powers and wicked lockpicking skills to get into their fireplace-deficient house, which makes him sound like a freaking serial killer.
To an Australian, the average Christmas card picture is like some kind of weird Nirvana that other people experience- having snow, having it be cold enough to ENJOY hot lunch, having welcoming hugs be nice instead of sticky and smelly and gross- DO YOU GUYS KNOW WE DRINK EGG NOGG COLD?
Somehow, through the power of magic, or possibly hallucination after electrocution from a misfiring overheated Christmas tree light, IDK (if I plug my tree in, the lights scream. They wail. I'm serious.), Em has made it to a real winter wonderland! There's snow, warm boots, GLOVES, twinkling magic in the air, a real pine tree decorated
outside, and a special present under the tree- I wonder what's in it?
((I really had to try and explain... the real impact that the 'standard' Christmas would have on someone who never had it or else the avatar wouldn't make sense. Like 'why are you so excited?'. So the story's a bit long- BUT I MADE IT FUNNY- so hopefully that's okay. Also I'm not kidding about any of the Australian Christmas stuff, that's all true. Laser baubles and all- our sun is very strong.))
