The only thing good about being kidnapped for what felt like weeks in a Mirror World and subjected to horrifying, traumatic events that would haunt her for the rest of her life was the fact it meant she got to stay home from school for like, an entire week.

After Bea’s return home, it hadn’t taken long for her mother to rush her missing daughter to the pediatrician, who had a fair amount of wait time as it was, considering all of the other missing children had just started appearing at random across the city. Nevertheless, the white haired girl was seen and it was determined that she was dehydrated and malnourished, but not to a point where she would need to be hospitalized.

So, instead, she was restricted to bed by a worrisome mother with more blue and purple gatorade than she knew what to do with. In fact, Bea was pretty sure that her insides were now a weird shade of a purplish-blue mix and if she died and they did an autopsy, she’d make it on to at least Yahoo News about it.

The only problem with staying at home all week was the fact that she was really really bored. And worried. She was VERY worried over her best friend, especially considering the last battle with the mighty crystal queen and Kibby’s distraught love for the (poor?) monarch.

She’d hesitated for a day or two before texting, but finally bit the bullet on Wednesday and shot one to her bestie.

[To Kells: I still owe u ice cream]
[To Kells: u still alive to eat it/?]

Beatrice Kellye: ever the sympathetic best friend.

Bea hadn’t been in contact. Nobody had been in contact, not that she really expected them to have been. Honestly, the one who had seemed the most worried had been Lottie, who had hardly left Kelly’s side since she had been home. Her parents were relieved, well…mostly relieved. Her father had been relieved at first, but was now angry, rather convinced that she had run away to ‘be a hobo’ like her no count brother.

Her hair was short now too, having gone to the hairdressers to even out the damage from losing the pigtail. She didn’t have a good story of how it had been lost, but. Lost it was. At least there was still some length to her hair, it nearly reached her shoulders and that was something. But…it wasn’t the waist length fantastic thing that it had once been…and that was devastating.

A lot of things were devastating, and Kelly didn’t want to really leave her room. She knew she had made a lot of wrong choices, and knew that she was going to be very, very unpopular with the rest of the Dark Mirror Court…and that thought kind of frightened her. She had thought that what she was doing was good. Thought that maybe the others would see that she was right…she had been right…none of that had been Altea’s fault…and they had betrayed her. Destroyed her and for what? To get the…the chaos seed or whatever? It seemed like it was theirs now. How long until one of the other senshi managed to get possession of it and it turned them into monsters? How could they…how could they all be such hypocrites?

When her phone emitted the ringtone of Bea, Kelly didn’t know if she even wanted to answer it. But…she couldn’t ignore Bea of all people, so she picked up the phone just as the second message came in. With a little smile she sent back a text of her own.

[To Bea: Yeah, I guess I’m alive. What took you so long? Figured you were dead too.]

The phone dinged a few minutes after she’d shot off her messages and there was a brief moment of relief that yes, her friend was still on this plane of existence and didn’t completely, utterly hate her.

...then again, there were urban legends about people receiving texts from beyond the grave….

Her phone flipped on and she pursed her lips at the response. Dead too?

Man, she wished. How easier that woulda made it when it came to breakin’ out of the house.

[To Kells: under lock and key]
[To Kells: mom thought I was trying to kill myself]
[To Kells: guess my love of spooks spooked her]
[To Kells: that + the lab results at the doc’s says I’m not a vampire yet]
[To Kells: not even a little bit alarming. Well. monster wise]
[To Kells: RIP to that day dream]

As she spammed her best friend’s phone, she realized just how terribly attention starved she’d been without her cohort in crime’s presence. She’d been so caught up in her own woes and purple-blue organ dying to realize she’d been a terrible friend… both in AND out of the Mirror World. She’d done her best to try to ignore that fact… but, well, it was kind of too glaringly obvious not to see.

Bea’d effed up and she definitely needed to patch things up.

[To Kells: Mom’s at work tonight]
[To Kells: gonna break out]
[To Kells: what kind of ice cream u want]
[To Kells: + chocolate or rainbow sprinkles?]
[To Kells: #importantlifedecisions]
PostPosted: Fri Nov 17, 2017 5:18 pm

Kelly stared at her phone as the ringtone kept tinging and shook her head smiling just a little more at Beas enthusiasm. She was so crazy.

She picked the phone and read the five…six…ten? Eleven messages that Bea decided to fire off in rapid succession and even managed a little laugh, pulling one of the stuffed animal creations that her friend had given her into her lap and hugging the cat frog tightly as she thought of what to say back. She hadn’t really been feeling very chatty but…she also hadn’t had anyone but her little sister to talk to so…

[To Bea: Rainbow sprinkles, please…or those fancy butterfly sprinkles if they have them? For the ice cream, I don’t know…I’m feeling kind of vanilla right now, but I know that’s not what you want to hear, so anything but coffee or mint chip, please.]

Kelly glanced out of her window for a minute and sent another text right after. God she was turning into Bea.

[To Bea: And nothing with nuts. Can you stay the night? I don’t really want to be alone. Your mom likes me right? I’m sure she’d be fine with it…if not I don’t know. You’re coming over at least for a little while?]

She chewed her bottom lip as the final text popped in. It had been fine when it was just ice cream - sneak out, grab it, hang out, get back - but staying the night actually meant coming clean to her mother and ‘fessing up to what she’d otherwise leave as a what she doesn’t know doesn’t hurt her scenario.

But she was seventeen and able to make her own decisions, right? Right???

It wasn’t like her mom didn’t know that Kelly had been part of the abduction too. She’d tried to explain that there were tons of girls her age that had been worse off than her but “none of those girls are my daughter”, Mrs. Kellye had snapped, “I’m just concerned about you.”

Moms. How typical.

But this was Kelly, not just some random girl from school or around town.

Yeah - she’d face the consequences later.

Shooting off a pre-apologetic-but-gonna-do-it-anyways text to her mother to let her know she was going to be bunking with her bestie for the night, Bea rolled her way out of bed and managed to put on enough clothing to look halfway presentable (even if her twin braids looked more like twin frays). Her emergency twenty bucks that Mom had left her for pizza was snatched up and, grabbing her bat-themed backpack, she was out the door.

Approximately two large sundaes (with extra butterfly sprinkles) later and she was on the doorstep of the Chriscadens’ residence. With no hands available to knock, she did what she did best: used her head.

Literally.

Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.

“ICE CREAM DELIVER--ow!”

Okay so, maybe she wasn’t quite up to one hundred percent recovered - yet.

Kelly had been waiting downstairs, sitting at the kitchen table doodling on a post it note…it wasn’t a great picture…but after a moment she realized just what she was drawing and sighed, picking the note off and crumpling it in her hand just as he first…knocks? No. They weren’t knocks…they were…

Thunks.

With a sigh and a small grin, the teen stood up and walked towards the door, opening it as she stuffed the post it into her pocket. “Bea. You’ve been to my house how many times…if you have your hands full, use your elbow on the doorbell. Not your head. Goof.”

There. That was a pretty good attempt at saying something normal. At least she figured it was. It was about as normal as she could make it right now so…

She reached out and liberated her friend from one of the sundaes and made her way back into the kitchen, placing the slightly melting confection onto the table. It might have only been a week, but Kelly felt like a whole different person. She hadn’t really left her room, hadn’t really been sleeping…she was pale, rather thin and her eyes had dark circles under them which would have rivaled the ones that Bea had back in Mirrorspace. And her hair. That was perhaps the worst change…and the most permanent. “Missed you.”

“Made you smile though, didn’t it?”

With her hand freed, it was much easier to grab the plastic spoon that had come with the sundae and immediately begin to dig in, her cookies and cream swirled with fudge and whipped cream quickly finding its way shoved into her gullet as she walked.

“Your mom around?” She asked casually, though god only knew what it actually sounded like with her mouth stuffed full of sweetness. Eyes cast a glance around the house - everything seemed back to normal but then again, Kelly’s parents had enough to worry on their plate with big brotato being a black sheep and all.

Her ice cream container was planted alongside her BFF’s as she took a seat in one of the nearby chairs. It wasn’t hard to tell that the Kellsmeister was still working her way through things - it was a wonder how the girl was out of bed, in Bea’s opinion. LJ had taken her smacks and injuries in the Mirrorspace but it hadn’t been anything in comparison to the trauma that Kibbaroo had gone through by any means.

“Hey.” Reaching out, she grabbed the other girl’s leg and used it as an anchor, pulling both herself and the chair closer to the other teenager’s seat. Bea looked like she wanted to say something serious, dark eyes narrowing as she studied the other girl’s frail looking form and questionable state. A moment passed, then two. Finally, one hand reached up to gently brush against the new “look” that Kelly had acquired thanks to the Mirrorspace fight.

“You know, it’s probably better to have short hair than long hair.” She tugged on a strand, for emphasis, “Do you know how many people die each year because they get their hair stuck in bad places? Like, a lot, I’m pretty sure.”

“You normally can make me smile no matter what you do, Bea. That’s never been an issue.” Sticking her spoon in her own slightly melted sundae, swirling the contents into a muddy looking mess. Suddenly, she wasn’t really even hungry for ice cream anymore, but she took a spoonful to make sure Bea didn’t know. “But hurting your head shouldn’t be your go-to way of making me smile it’s silly. I hate when you get hurt.”

When her friend grabbed hold of her leg, Kelly looked up, rather startled. What was—oh. She was just moving closer. She supposed that made sense…why would it have been for any other reason but…

But then Bea was touching her hair and she looked up once more, frowning slightly, then managing another smile. “Yeah, maybe that happened in the early 1900’s when people were working in factories…but I doubt long hair contributes to many deaths nowadays…I tell you…when I see Lottie’s hair…I keep feeling super jealous. But…mine will grow back. Eventually. Just have to stay away from you know. Broken mirrors and…and things like that. Right?”

Kelly looked back at her melting sundae and sighed again, smooshing a mound of ice cream towards the corner, hoping that if it was flattened out, it would look as though she had eaten more.

Eyebrows furrowed as she watched Kelly’s reaction. The girl was doing her very best to try to keep a smile on her face, but it was apparent that she wasn’t happy - ice cream or not.

“Well I think it looks cute,” she offered as fingers combed through the length she’d managed to snag. “Screw Lottie, you’re a cutie whether you’ve got long hair or short hair, okay?”

Bea wondered if using the word cutie would be inappropriate or not anymore. Heck, she wasn’t really sure what all had happened back in Mirrorspace and what had been conjured up by her sleep-deprived brain.

She was pretty sure that they had kissed… but she was also pretty sure that crystals had been sprouting from off of their skin. It was hard to tell which was more plausible, especially considering…

Smacking her own ice cream with the spoon, she forced hers into a melty puddle alongside her best friend’s. Sure, she was definitely eating more of hers than Kelly was, but she wanted to show some comradery for Kellbell’s sake.

“So are we gonna beat the daylights outta our desserts like they owe us money or are you gonna tell your buddy why you look like someone ran over your dog - and then backed over it for good measure?”

Glancing towards Bea, Kelly finally gave what seemed to be a real smile. “Well..thanks, Bea.” If her bestie liked it...well. Then perhaps it really was cute. She watched as Bea seemed to imitate her mutilation of the sundae and raised her eyebrows, half amused, half...not.

At her friend’s words she only shrugged, looking away again. “I’m fine. Just not really hungry. You should eat yours though, you were digging into it a second ago...I didn’t mean to make you lose your appetite.” She shoved a spoonful of the gooey dessert into her mouth, hoping that it would cause Bea to start eating again, though sighed after she had swallowed her mouthful.

“I don’t look like someone ran over my dog. I don’t have a dog. Things have just...they’ve just been strange, that’s all. Dad’s started being a jerk to me since we were gone and...I don't know. I’m starting to become the black sheep just like Leander.” Gloom had settled upon her shoulders once more, not that it had really left, but at least Bea had been pushing it back a little. Even a little was better than nothing.

“So...are we dating?”

The words came from out of nowhere and Kelly looked up, frowning at herself as though she couldn’t quite figure out where the words had come from. It couldn’t have been from her own mouth, right? It wasn’t what was bothering her...or at least it hadn’t been...but suddenly she felt like everything was hanging on the answer.

Her head tilted, frizzy white braids dipping with the motion as she stared at the other girl curiously. She watched her force some more ice cream in her mouth - Bea did imitate her and take another bite of her own for herself, but the question that came shortly after had her swallowing the freezing cream. It took a moment for her to find feeling back in her frozen tongue.

“Is… Is that what’s bothering you, Kellz?”

Even the mention of Leander, Kelly’s older brother, didn’t sway her attention. And he, of all people, usually did when the handsome older boy was brought up into the conversation. So that meant this was Big Important Talk to Bea, who didn’t normally participate in conversations that dealt with Big Important Talks, if she could help it.

Her hand gently picked up the other girl’s, setting the ice cream down on the table with the other. Fingers squeezed around the older girl’s and she offered her a smile. It wasn’t her brightest but it wasn’t fake - if anything it was hesitant, like Bea was unsure.

“I… I mean, you’ve known me since before we could count. I’ve never… I mean. I don’t know how to date, Kelsy. There are serial killers out there who have had better date lives than me.”

Nervous chatter was taking over, silly comments coming out of nowhere in lieu of trying to stay Super Serious. Still… this was Kelly and Kelly deserved her effort. “Did… Are you having regrets? Y’know, about what happened over in the mirror world?”

Orangeish Sherbert
PostPosted: Fri Nov 17, 2017 5:23 pm

Kelly shrugged. “No, not really I guess. It just kind of popped into my head. It’s a dumb question, I know.” She should have kept her mouth shut.

Should have stayed in the mirror world with Altea is what she really should have done. Everything had been utter s**t since coming back and she was having none of it. Her eyes drifted back to her ice cream soup and she shrugged. “I’m not having regrets. I’m just not…really that into being back here, I guess. I wish I could have stayed. I wish things hadn’t ended the way that they did and I wish everyone wouldn’t have been such an a*****e to my...to the Queen…”

Shrugging again, the teenager got up and went to the sink, turning on the water and letting the slightly goopy creamy mess slip down the drain along with the stream. “I’m not…really feeling so swell…I think I might take a nap or something. I’m sorry to have made you come all the way out here…”

It took a moment, but finally she remembered that Bea was supposed to spend the night and a sigh went through her. “I don’t want you to get into trouble, and I don’t want your mom mad at me too…I could call Leander and he could give you a ride home so you’re safe…if you want.”

“It’s not a dumb questio--”

Her comment was cut off as the other girl moved to the sink, Bea’s face still lit up red at the suggestion. She didn’t know the first thing about dating - heck, she knew more about the love lives of all the dearly departed couples in the local cemetery than she knew about her own love life. It, like the science project they had due in two days, was non-existent.

Kelly’s next words were concerning and Bea felt herself grow even redder. She’d failed her when it had come to the whole mirrorspace… fiasco. Kelly had been there for her but she’d froze when the final battle had happened, watched on in horror as Kibby defended the Queen that LJ had always been suspicious of from the beginning.

Yeah, maybe she had right to be suspicious but… she should’ve stuck by her bestie. That was the point of being a bestie, right?

“I’m… I’m sorry you feel that way. I let you down, Kelly.”

No Kells, no Kellybelly, no nickname.

Just Kelly.

Her head hung and it was her turn to shrug her shoulders, the pain of being dismissed so casually by Kelly stinging harshly. “I messed up really bad, back there. I wasn’t thinking right. I shoulda been there for you.”

Orangeish Sherbert
PostPosted: Fri Nov 17, 2017 5:40 pm

The name made Kelly’s whole body stiffen. Bea had never called her Kelly, not since the first day that they had met and the nicknames had started. At least not that Kelly could remember. She couldn’t quite figure out if the use of her normal name meant that Bea was trying to show how serious she was being…or if she had really shattered something with their friendship. Because…

No. She couldn’t think about that right now.

Swallowing hard, Kelly ran a hand across her face, quickly hiding any trace of the stupid tears that had bubbled up and turned to walk deeper into the house. “You didn’t do anything, you’re fine, but I’m really going to go and sleep, I’ll text Leander if you want to wait outside…thanks for coming to see me, it really meant a lot.”

Moving out of the kitchen, Kelly waited until she was at least out of sight of her friend before breaking into a run and collapsing onto her bed, sending a hasty text to Leander and then burying her face in her pillow, fully intending to hide in her bed for the next two hundred years if she could muster it.

Bea watched helplessly as the older girl took off for her bedroom, only glancing away once she felt the sudden, freezing chill of something dripping onto her fingers.

Oh.

The ice cream looked about as defeated as she felt, like a giant pool of blah just waiting to be cleaned up by the first person who gave two craps.

Ugh. She'd really messed up - she'd messed up bad and now Kelly wasn't even going to let her stay over, much less let her grovel an apology out. This TOTALLY put a damper on her runaway plans for the evening, not to mention... well. She wasn't quite sure where she stood in Kelly's eyes and it didn't seem that the girl with the cute shorter hairstyle was in any position of letting her know.

Scooting the chair back, Bea unceremoniously dumped the remainder of her ice cream in the sink before dragging her hand up and licking away the sticky residue that lingered. Another side-eyed glance in the direction of her friend's departure and then the white haired girl was also taking her leave - out the back door.

Leander, as hot as he was, couldn't even lift the spooky girl's spirits at this point, so she was better off just walking home alone.

Sigh.
