He sent a text to Lex early one afternoon; it was just a short one, but Gale was never known for overly wordy texts in the first place.Carhop Cavalier Text to Lex:
If you'd be so inclined, I'm on the training field. We could talk and I can show you a few things.

Lex pulled a hoodie over his head and slipped out of his house, leaving behind crinkled up wrappers of pop tarts and corn chips. It would be nice to really hear who he used to be, and Gale seemed like the man to do it. The training field approached, and Lex scanned for blonde hair. He found Gale eventually, trotting up to him. "Hey, Gale? Mr. Gale? What do you prefer?"

It was so bizarre.
This was not the tall, intelligent Alexei Jamil that Gale had known all these years. This was a young kid, probably younger than Gale had been when he'd first come to the island, although likely - and unfortunately - their heights were already drastically far apart, which was annoying. At least he'd grown used to it by now, six years later, that his being unencumbered by grand stature was just a regular fact.
"Just Gale is fine," he said, trying to ignore the feeling in his chest. "I know you don't remember me, but...it's nice to see you again, regardless."

Lex really was expecting someone much more... intimidating. He wasn't all too sure why, however; maybe it was the tone Gale put off on twitter, the shortness that came through in his text messages, even his profile picture said 'don't mess with me.' Yet, the shorter man still gave off an air of intimidation, despite his politeness - it was in his posture, Lex realized. Gale carried himself in such a confident manner that you couldn't help but respect the man. "Ah, Gale." Lex nodded, offering a hand to shake. "It's nice to see you too, is probably what I would be sayin'." A sheepish smile cracked Lex's baby face. "Thank you for, well, talking to me about all this. Marcus gave me some details, but he seemed a little too unnerved to give me the full story."

He was trying not to think of how bizarre this whole situation was; how strange it felt to be re-meeting someone he had already met. Gale knew of the younger hunters, of course; he himself had taken care of one of them before passing him along to a more competent hunter - but this was someone he had known, someone he had talked to.
Someone Stormy had known and trusted, once upon a time.
"Ah, so you've met Marcus," said Gale dryly. "Well, that's one introduction, I'm sure. And I don't mind at all, I'm sorry to drag you out here, but I've remembered a bit about how you used to have a pistol as your weapon, and I thought perhaps I could help you with it, seeing as how we're both gun users."
He offered Lex a faint smile.
"That, and talk to you a little bit about your former self."

"Yeah, it was an interesting meeting, to say the least." Lex couldn't at all blame Marcus, though. If Lex were in any of the Hunters' shoes, seeing someone he once knew turned into a teenager, permanently, he would be unnerved and a little shaken. Gale was taking it quite well, Lex thought. "He threatened to kick my door in, which is funny since he'd probably be the one made to repair it." Regal laughed at the idea. "You've got a gun, too?" Lex's eyes went bright, his smile spreading a little wider. In his spars so far, his partners had been either very melee forward, or mid-range. Learning how to actually do long-range combat would be wonderful, for sure. "Regal has been teaching me some things, but I'm sure that you're an expert by now." Lex was actually excited for this. Shooting and learning about himself? Now that was a hell of a deal. "How did we meet?"

Gale hadn't seen Marcus in quite some time; and in fact, had forgotten that the other man was even back every now and then since he was relatively sure that Marcus was stationed long elsewhere. "Oh, that's right; you're living in the towns still, aren't you? My girlfriend and I used to be out there, as well."
And now the house was being used as a sort of gathering spot by Cami and her friends or family, which Gale was perfectly content with. He offered Lex a small smile, feeling an unexpected pang in his chest; what would Stormy think of a younger Lex who no longer remembered everything he had done?
"I have a rifle," Gale corrected, as he summoned the weapon. Jinhai appeared in a gust of pale golden light, then was shifted and stood upright, so that the barrel of the gun stood a few inches taller than Gale himself. "And yes, after six years here on the island, I do like to think I've got at least some experience."
And then some. Gale's gaze flickered towards Lex.
"Ah...a mutual acquaintance, really," he said. "But we did talk and train a lot, considering our respective weapons."

"Oh, rifle, sorry." Apparently gun and rifle were an important distinction, but this was pretty much the military, so yeah, that would be an important distinction. But really, how big of a deal was it? Gale summoned his weapon. "Holy ******** hell." It was that big of a deal. Lex looked starstruck, he was starstruck. The same way he admired Oliver's ax, and some of the other weapons he had briefly seen on the sparring fields. "That's just...so ******** cool." Lex summoned Regal into his right hand, twirling the pistol. "Will Reggie get that cool? Like, it seems all of you big shots have rad weapons. Reg is just this little pea shooter..." < What? I'm not good enough for you now? > Did he sound hurt? << Sorry, that's not what I meant. >> The griffin just huffed, leaving the conversation there. "Ah, sorry, let me pick my jaw off the floor." Lex chuckled, snapping back to a straighter posture. "Were we good friends? I mean, you said we trained and talked quite a bit." A small beat. "Did I know your girlfriend?"

For someone who had long since been teased mercilessly about both his height (or lack thereof) and his age since coming to the island, the rifle was something of a pride and joy for Gale, because he knew just how impressive it was. He leaned a little against it, hearing Jinhai's faint amused sound in the back of his head.
"Thanks. Took a bit to get to this point, but it's quite a useful weapon."
<< I should say so. >>
Gale smiled slightly. "Don't worry. Yours will grow in both strength and appearance as time passes, and you rise in rank. Perhaps not as large as mine, but I'm sure it'll suit you fine."
Lex's question made him hesitate, the smile fading. After a moment, he said quietly, "Yes. You knew her. You...both got along well, at least in the beginning, but as time passed, things happened, and..." He took a small breath. "Well. Let's just say that they didn't turn out the way they were supposed to."

Gale's posture and attitude regarding Lex and the other man's girlfriend made the young man frown. Lex knew he had been a bit of a screw up, no, a jackass, as an older man, but the way Gale acted? It was as if Lex had wounded this person. He ran his free hand through his cropped hair, grey eyes set on the grass. "I'm sorry for whatever the old man did." Lex sighed, rubbing his forearm now. < You are not him. You know this. > Right, of course Reggie was right. The griffin usually was. "So, uh, guns! There's so many people here with swords, knives, shields, and axes. What the hell do we do?"

He shook his head; it wasn't as though they could redo the past, and what had happened had happened. It had fractured the relationship between Stormy and Lex, but Gale wasn't really all that sure that he wanted to lay that much on a young man's shoulders. There was nothing to be done about it now.
He offered Lex a small smile.
"It's fine. Don't dwell too much on it, all right?"
Gale pulled his rifle towards himself, turning it over in his hands so that it lay flat. It was absurdly long this way; he slid his fingers down until he was gripping the barrel, Gale taking a few steps back so that he wouldn't be anywhere too close to Lex.
"You improvise," he said, and gave a demonstrative swing like a baseball player. "I tend to use mine this way when I need to fight close range. With a smaller weapon like a gun, you can always do the norm and hit them with it. Perhaps a little ungraceful, but it works in necessary situations."

Lex mumbled a quick 'yessir' before the lesson in melee combat began. It was best, he knew, to just leave well enough alone and allow himself some grace. After all, who Lex was now was not the Lex who had done whatever had been done. Forgiveness was so easy to give to everyone else. Lex's grey eyes went wide at Gale's display, swinging the intricate rifle like a baseball bat. "Huh, never would have thought about that." Color Lex impressed. Whoever wound up on the receiving end of that attack would be one sorry customer. "Oh, cool." Lex gave Gale an appreciative nod. "So, pistol whipping works? What about punching or kicking? Do our FEAR shields do damage the same way our weapons do?"

"Sometimes it can be hard to fight close range when all you have is a long range weapon," said Gale, a little sympathetically. Heaven knew just how much trouble he had had in the beginning of his stay at Deus; all the fights he had lost and all the difficulties of trying to find a good balance. "Hunter weapons aren't invincible, but they tend to be a little more sturdy and more capable of taking damage than normal weapons, so I can hit people with it without worrying too much about breaking it."
He laughed a little. Younger Lex was a little cheeky, which was kind of entertaining. Gale wasn't sure how Stormy would react, but she would learn eventually, he knew. For now, however, he would do his best to teach Lex what he could.
"Pistol whipping is an option, yes, and so is punching and kicking. As a hunter, your FEAR shield protects you from most lasting damage, but this doesn't mean that you're completely immune from injury," Gale added, with a meaningful look. "You can't rely on just the shield to keep you safe, defense is important. You're also physically stronger as a hunter than you are as a normal hunter, so you're capable of more."

"Defense? Okay, yeah, that's good advice." Lex agreed, almost wishing he had a notepad to jot all of Gale's tips and tricks. < I can remember for you, Lexi. > << What did I tell you about calling me that? >> < Then stop calling me Reggie. > << Never. >> "So do us long range guys have to rely more on evasion, when it comes to defense? You said my weapon isn't exactly invincible, and I doubt I could catch a sword with a pistol...so I should probably work on cardio and gymnastics?" Was there even a way to practice gymnastics on the island? There was the school, and the school had a gymnasium, but as far as Lex could tell, that was just for assemblies and classes. Would he have to set up a dirt bike course and a gymnastics area? Damn, goodbye money.

"Evasion is good," said Gale with a nod. "Evasion, and learning to control your weapon in a close setting. Not all long range weapons will work as well in close range settings, so you're right, defense is a good way to go. Make use of what you have in order to get by."
His mouth twitched in an approximation of a smile.
"Cardio does sound good. Gymnastics might possibly be able to go without, however. I still can't do a cartwheel."
