Name: Symon
Age: 32
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Weyr: Western Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider, Searchrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Cook
Physical Description:
Symon is a tiny woman, standing at just 5'1”. A cooking accident involving boiling oil had left her with a patchwork of scars over her scalp and face and no hair (she had a tuft or two but she keeps them shaved for simplicity's sake). An athletic build out of necessity, Symon's love of food is thankfully balanced out by the demands of a dragonrider. The scars stole whatever beauty she might have had but she wears the scars proudly and does not attempt to disguise anything with cosmetics. The scars make it easy to miss her heterochromatic eyes – one blue, one green.
Personality:
Symon is the sort to choose words carefully to mask their full meaning. She very rarely speaks bluntly and always seems like she's got something more up her sleeve or one more tidbit of information she's just not telling you. This is a rider who likes to tantalize people their own imaginations and as such, she's developed a reputation for being secretive... and manipulative. It's not neccessarily a bad thing, but it certainly depends on where you find yourself on her 'like or hate' spectrum.
That said, Symon isn't exactly refined in her word selection. Her vocabulary is peppered with curse words, coarse turns of phrase, and some rather downright dirty remarks. Part of this is because she just doesn't seem to have much inhibition control. More drink? Sure! Make an advance on that pretty man or woman? Sure! She'll also stand up for herself and doesn't seem to care too much how this might affect her career – as far as she's concerned, she's a dragonrider and Thread's falling for next foreseeable future so she's got some mighty fine job security (after all, what are they going to do, fire her?)
Beyond her sly tendencies, Symon can be dependable – if she likes you enough to be, that is. Otherwise, she can be downright cruel. Her manipulative streak has helped some achieve great things and has caused scandals worthy of weyr-wide gossip in others. She sometimes seems as she revels in the mayhem she has been architect of.
Positive Trait List Dependable, social, confident
Negative Trait List Secretive, manipulative, cruel
History:
Symon's family immigrated to Western Weyr when she was young, coming in search of steady income and prospects for their family. Mostly farmers, their land had experience several years of poor harvest and wasting diseases that made their life there unfeasible. In arriving at the Weyr, they took up positions among the Weyrfolk tending the herds and preparing food in the kitchens. It wasn't a glamourous life but it was reliable, and safe, and at times dramatic.
Symon was always curious about the Weyrfolk and the very different lives they lead from the simple holder's world she'd come from. Gossip, rumour, drama... jockeying for favours and trading of secrets fascinated the youth as she grew and she became skilled in the seedier side of the Weyr's social structure. Throughout this all, she noticed the dragons also had their own social structure and rumours among the riders and, recognizing the relative power of the dragonriders, she began to navigate those circles more. To some she was a confidant, a friend, or a vicious enemy and in any case she developed a reputation for knowing things.
Then the accident happened and her decent looks were dashed upon the ground as oil burns ruined her face and head. It was long time, well into her teens, before she found her confidence again and she leaned all the harder into the manipulative streak to keep and reject friends.
When she Impressed from the Stands one Hatching, she was rather stunned to find the perfect partner in crime settling into her thoughts and requesting her presence upon the Sands in a velvet voice. Fayrunth, a bright mottled blue, sat primly and still as a statue as he awaited her.
It wasn't long before she threw herself headlong into the riders' world. Her blue chasing greens on a regular basis, fostering relationships, gathering intelligence... redistributing it if the trade was fair... They were an effective pair and their knack for social navigation was recognized enough to send them out as Searchriders. Some wondered if it was also to get the confident, troublesome pair out the Weyr leadership's hair for a few days at a time as well.
Content with their role, Symon and Fayrunth have revelled in each other's company ever since and take great pride in their abilities to play human – and sometimes even dragon – fiddles.
Other: Anything else you want to add?
DRAGON
Name: Fayrunth
Age: 14
Color: Blue
Size: 32'
Physical Description:
Fayrunth is long, sinuous, and... more academic in build than he would like. On the large size for a blue, he's often still enough people forget he's there. He rarely speaks to anyone other than his rider, even for a dragon, and the small of body language he does let on is mostly in the form of tail-twitching or eye colours swirling. It's almost like he's a status sometimes and if it weren't for his rider's ease, some might wonder if he were ill.
Personality:
Fayrunth is an observer. He prefers to watch and take note of the goings-on of people. This tendency has lead to people calling him a gossip or a creeper, and while those may be negative terms he never really seems to be upset by them. Yes, he does gather information, and yes he may divulge such information but only for the appropriate price. You see, Fayrunth deals in information and favours and he never does anything for free. You want to know what that green was heard saying about the Council last week? He knows, but he'll expect a flask of wine for His or a box of sweets... the more elusive the information, the higher the cost.
To compliment this tendency, Fayrunth is an excellent reader of people – he's got some strong intuition and a knack for reading facial expressions and body language. He'll observe through his rider's eyes or his own and provide commentary even as Symon plays the field. It's a powerful combination and the two have spent much time perfecting it. Pushing buttons, getting people to light up or shut down... it's a game to Fayrunth and successfully finding the right combinations of words and implications to ellicit the desired emotion is extremely rewarding.
When he does speak, his mental voice is smooth and rich, almost musical in its depth. And he likes to use it as a finishing blow when manipulating humans in particular.
For all his selfish cruelty, Fayrunth is extremely effective when directed to beneficial tasks and provided you've garnered enough respect for him to actually try at the task. He's not lazy, no, but he won't waste his time making you look good off of his work if he doesn't believe in you. His sights good, his intuition better... and you must make it worth his while to apply himself.
