Thinking and self-reflection were Joy's strong suits about as much as subtlety was. Which was why whenever she was feeling unhappy, bothered, or just plain restless about something, instead of trying to get to the root of the issue, the intermediate Moon went and did something else.
In this case, she wanted to get some sparring done. Which was why she sent a quick message to whoever she thought could be interested.

She'd give him several minutes to reply because, well, he might have been busy with someone else. And the thought of the likelihood of that had her grinning wryly to herself.

Solo Jenga was not exciting at all...but it was a pastime he'd grown rather fond of so there he was, in the lounge killing time playing Jenga. He was just winding down from a long shift in the Jungle outpost, but when his phone pinged he pulled it out and quickly looked the text over. He gave an amused huff. Sparring wasn't exactly winding down, but it was more exciting (and productive) than playing Solo Jenga, so he shot her a text back before getting ready.
Rhys waved over at the Moon when he arrived, and right on time. "Exactly five minutes, as promise," he said, grinning before nodding at her.
"So just felt like sparring or what?" he thought to ask. "It's cool, just kinda random."

"Yeah, didn't have anything lined up, and I've already cleaned my flat for the day. Figured I still got a ton of energy to burn off," Joy laughed. The first two parts were mostly true, she had scrubbed and washed and did any and every chore available because it put her in a kind of Zen state.
Otherwise, she would be left to her thoughts and she did not like contemplating on them. She would have welcomed Bert's snide remarks but lately his words were stinging her in ways they didn't used to.
"I assume you've already warmed up?" she asked, "I mean, you're free to get some stretches in first."

He snorted. "That's me half of my life here," he said as he quickly got in some stretches before summoning Zephira. She was indignant at how true that was, especially since he and Seren became a thing. His free time wasn't spent nearly as often out in the fields because he spent it with her whenever he could, which meant less time out and less FEAR for her.
Of course, he ignored her.
"All warm, let's do this." And he got in a fighting stance.

Joy could only smirk, teasing him in an obviously suggestive tone, "Mm hmm, you sure you don't know anyone else who ahem could make better use of your extra energy?"
When he got into his stance, Joy leaped forward to swing from below, arcing the bladed shovel upwards, fully anticipating the intermediate Mist to block the attack. She wasn't exactly trying to be subtle about her movements, she didn't have nearly as creative a mind as Bert hoped she possessed when it came to sparring.

He smirked at the teasing but didn't quite take the bait since he found himself with his hands full trying to deflect her next attack.
It was one of the more obvious types of attacks, very straightforward and easily blockable, so it more or less came to experience being on the defensive end of the spectrum. Rhys admittedly spent most of his time in offense, especially when training, so he wasn't able to block as much of it as he should have, but he managed...somehow.
"Can't take up all her time, though," he finally responded, wincing a little at the pain blossoming across his chest.

Joy snorted in amusement, "I certainly appreciate having some girl time too. And c'mon, put those guns of yours into the spar. The training field's got wards so no worries about accidentally getting someone sent to the infirmary."
She pulled back to rest Bert across her shoulders, "'Sides, can't be only Bert that's making complaining about being hungry."

He quirked a brow when she egged him on, so when he dashed in and slashed the next time he did his best to make sure his hit connected. Granted...it may have been a bit of a cheap shot since she had her weapon "holstered" when he went in.
"I'm guessin' she does, too," he said as he sidestepped in hopes of dodging a possible oncoming attack. "And is he goin' on about FEAR s**t lately? Zeph's been pissin' me off with all her whining about not getting enough of the stuff recently. Not sure what in the hell she wants me to do about that. Can't exactly spend every waking moment out here."

It should have struck Joy as odd that the reedy voice in her head wasn't the only weapon unusually starved of FEAR. Instead, it struck her as concerning, and this was around the time Rhys took her up on her challenge to take a good swing at her.
Rather than resisting the momentum, she went with it, letting the force travel through her arms as well, and when she pivoted on her heels, it gave her counter strike a decent amount of heft.
"You don't suppose Creation's got anything to do with that, do you?" Because at this point, everything is Creation's fault if Joy was asked.

"Maybe," he replied through gritted teeth as pain shot through his body from her last strike. It nearly got him on his knees but he somehow managed to keep himself up, and when he saw another opening he didn't hesitate to take it.
"But ******** if I know. I think I can handle Zephira bitchin' around better than I can handle out-of-body s**t like whatever Kim went through, so if this is Creation I'm just glad it isn't somethin' worse."

Rhys might regret having given Joy the training regimen that he did. Because she was showing signs of improvement, much to Bert's delight. Not that he was being vocal about it but the impact the flat of the shovel made against Rhys practically rang out through the field.
The moon didn't even seem aware of just how strong a blow she'd made, "Hnn, yeah, I'd mos def take weapons whining over another person dying. 'Course there are some people I wouldn't exactly be so torn up about if they bit the bucket."

Rhys was, of course, more than aware of how strong a hit she'd made given that he'd taken the brunt of it very much head on. If it hadn't been for all the wards in place on top of his shield he was sure he'd be bleeding something fierce right about then, given how the pain resonated throughout his entire body. He wasn't even really able to process what she said until he fell down to his knee, wincing as he kept his sword up on the defensive.
"Don't know enough people well enough here to care if they bite the big one or not," he finally said, ignoring Zephira's chiding about his lack of focus in the fight. He was focused just fine, Joy was just naturally besting him as she usually did.
Zephira wasn't having any of that, though.
"I'll ask later who you're thinkin' about." He smirked at that, admittedly a little curious.

"Just so's you know, you and Seren are on my top five of people I would die protecting even if I weren't in Moon." It might be hard to believe given the follow up strike the bladed shovel delivered, though Joy purposely aimed at Rhy's sword as opposed to Rhys himself.

Rhys didn't have any trouble believing her, though there was maybe a momentary lapse in his certainty when she struck again. Thankfully he was able to deflect most of it this time, and when her blade was out of the way he lashed out with his blade as well, striking low given he was still on his knees.
"People I'd wanna keep safe are basically just you and Seren," he said, relaxing suddenly as he processed that for himself. "And I guess potentially people you two care about?"

Joy couldn't help but snort at the Rhys' hasty add on, "Don't worry, I don't got a lot on my list. At least, not ones that aren't a required by the division." Joy had to pause, this wasn't the kind of spar she was hoping for, all this talk about life and death, how did she get to this point?
Also, she was the Moon here, right? Wasn't she supposed to be on the defensive. "Hey, Rhys, you down for substituting your Mist with Sun for a bit on this spar?" The runes along the bladed shovel glowed and when Joy swung, the flat of the shovel stopped just short of actually hitting the man. It was a gentle little tap, one that meant to share the FEAR the weapon had amassed.
Much to Bert's displeasure.
