Malus had taken a significant amount of time to actually consider what he was going to do before he actually did it—at least, in regard to what he was doing tonight.

He had talked to Lysithea about her homeworld before—and he’d been to hers a few times, himself. But this wasn’t about her homeworld, it was about his. After a multitude of questions and debating on if he wanted to be on another world, or fearing that his world might be some terrible place or might not welcome him, he had finally decided to ignore all of his fears and just force himself to go.

He’d been curious for long enough—dreamed about it for long enough.

He wanted to know what the source of his power was, and he wanted to know if he deserved it.

So tonight, he and Lysithea were going to travel up there. They’d powered up and patrolled for about fifteen minutes before Malus decided he was ‘warmed up’ enough to try this whole thing, and the experience itself had been nerve wracking—even with Lysithea there to guide him through the process of actually visiting.

He’d pulled out his phone, activated the app, and waited, his arm hooked in hers.

And then, they’d been sucked through space, from here to there.

Malus wasn’t sure if he was ever going to get used to the sensation of transportation; he always felt winded, even when just hitching a ride with Lysithea, but this was different from even that. Now, he felt particularly winded and his vision dimmed for a split second once they stopped moving.

When he opened his eyes, his breath escaped him a second time.

The sky was dark, as if it were night, but there was no moon to be seen. Instead, a myriad of colors twisted through the sky like the Northern Lights and illuminated the world in a haze of pinks and purples and blues.

Tall mountains in the distance seemed black at a glance, but as the light caught them it was apparent that they glistened like fire opals. There was snow on the caps, but even that seemed to glisten like tiny little glass shards. The trees in the area were far from normal; they had bark and needles and leaves and flowers, the same as trees back home, but they were different.

Instead of the normal wood, it looked liked opalized wood. Instead of green, the needles were thin and glasslike, and the leaves were nearly entirely transparent. When the wind blew, it sounded more like wind chimes than a tree. There were clearly a few different types of trees; some had the needles and some had the leaves, but some had flowers of soft pastel colors. They were too far away for Malus to reach easily but he was happy to just look around and try to take in the sight of everything.

The sound of running water could be heard and though he didn’t move, he glanced around. On the ground, small, beadlike glass pebbles were speckled throughout the dirt.

It was a lot to take in; Malus just inhaled slowly, not sure where to look—or where to start.

It was always so…well, inspiring was a good word for it, perhaps…but the amount of growth that Evan had done ever since becoming a youma and then purifying and becoming a senshi…it was a lot. It had been a strain on all of them, but now as things were finally edging towards…well. Mostly normal, Lysithea had the ability to just revel in all that had changed.

In all that Evan had changed.

He was an entirely different person now.

An entirely different person who was rapidly coming into his own…and becoming someone who made her heart swell with pride…and when he had asked her to visit his planet with him…just her…

…Well, it made Lysithea feel incredibly humbled and she had accepted the offer with no hesitation, and after some instructions, here they were, and honestly, the senshi of unicorns was rather dumbstruck with how beautiful the planet was.

“Jeeze, Malus…and I thought that Lysithea was a pretty place…this…this is utterly amazing…”
Lysithea couldn’t take in everything all at once—there was just too much…and each new thing her eyes landed on was more beautiful than the last. The trees…and the sky and…

“I could live here. I’m honestly a little jealous, Mal. You’ve been holding back on me.” She gave him a gentle shove and grinned, closing her eyes for a moment as she listened to the gentle tinkling that seemed to be coming from the trees.

Malus looked up at Lysithea with a shade of guilt staining his face. “I’m sorry,” he said. It was partially earnest, even if he knew he was teasing. His arm was still looped around hers and he rested against her as he worked on recalibrating himself.

“I didn’t know.”

For a few seconds he was silent, just watching everything he could see. Just listening. There didn’t seem to be anything threatening about this place—at least, immediately—and there was something just soothing about it. Like he was home after being away for so long.

He breathed a sigh of relief and eventually relaxed. “…I thought it was going to be dark and ugly and full of monsters,” he said after a moment. “But instead, this place is beautiful. I just, I thought me and it would have more in common, but…”

He shrugged. “…It’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I…I’m really happy you came here with me. I don’t think I would be able to enjoy any of it if I didn’t have you here with me.”

Lysithea finally drew her eyes away from the splendor of the surrounding area and reached out, poking Malus on the nose.

“You…don’t think you and this place have a lot in common? I see a lot of it, to be honest, Mal.” She gave another look around, finally grinning softly. “You thought it was going to be dark…like your past is dark? That’s a fair thought, and if you’ll notice…it is dark here. You can’t deny that there’s darkness.”

Pulling the senshi closer, Lysithea wrapped her arms tightly around him, letting her chin rest atop his head.

“But…there’s light in the darkness, just like in you, there’s the hope for things to get better…there’s a more positive outlook than I think you’ve ever had…there’s your joy in some of the things that have happened recently, like your hunky Tobias.”

Her lips brushed the top of Malus’ hair and she sighed rather happily. “No, Mal. You’re wrong when you say you and your world don’t have anything in common…I think this place fits you perfectly. You’re both lovely and mysterious…and you both have secrets, I bet. This place looks like a place of secrets.”

And she knew full well Evan had more secrets than he knew how to handle.

Malus blinked; he tried to look up at her without moving his head and disrupting the position that she was in. He wanted to scoff and mutter something about her teasing him about Tobias, but the more she said, the less he could even focus on the joke. “You make it sound like it’s not a bad thing,” he said after a short moment of thought. He drew in a deep breath and released it; there was no tenseness in his shoulders anymore and he leaned backwards to rest against her. “When you put it like that, it sort of makes this place seem a little more magical. I want to know what secrets it has.”

Everything seemed to glisten and shimmer when the lights caught them just right.

“…As long as you’re with me. Or maybe if I get a little stronger I can come here. But,” he confessed, “I’m afraid I might forget how to get home and wind up trapped here. Or, knowing my luck, I’ll break my phone or drop it down some Cliffside or something stupid. But,” he paused to chew on the inside of his cheek thoughtfully. “Thank you for always being here, Cambria. And always knowing the right thing to say. I really don’t know where I’d be, or what I’d be doing without you. Even if someone else had figured out how to un-youmafy me.”

“It’s not a bad thing, Evan. That’s what I’m trying to say…and I’m glad you are able to take it that way…it…makes me happy to hear. I want to see what secrets it has too…and one day, I want to see more of my homeworld…it seems like when I go I just end up napping in the grass…not that naps are bad but…”

Lysithea’s arms tightened around him for a moment and she let out a little laugh. “Come on, Evan. You and I both know you’re not that clumsy, you have everything at home so organized, especially your kitchen, you know where everything is and I’m pretty sure you could cook a full meal with your eyes closed, so don’t go on about ‘losing your phone’. You really…”

She sighed and nuzzled against him. “You don’t give yourself enough credit. I’ll always be here, you’re my very best friend in the world, Evan…and I can’t imagine life without you.” The senshi grew quiet for a moment and sighed. “Well…That’s not true, is it. I can imagine life without you, and it sucks more than anything, so I’ll just always be there for you, that’s all. You’re a treasure. An absolute treasure and…one day you’ll realize that. You’ll realize that you sparkle as much as this place does…and knowing you…getting close to you? It leaves people feeling as mystified and breathless as coming up here for the first time.”

Evan laughed sheepishly, otherwise not sure how else to respond to her. He rested against her for a moment and then just shook his head. “You’re too nice. But I like the things you say and you always make me feel better, so I’m not going to argue with you. It’s just, you always see the good things in me, I guess, but I have a hard time seeing them. I always focus on the bad things. You know,” he shrugged, “The things that I’m weak with, or the things that I should improve on, or…if I know what’s wrong with me, nobody else can tell me what’s wrong with me. Can’t hurt my feelings. Or.”

He was quiet for a moment. “…Actually it still hurts my feelings, so maybe my brain is just broken. But you are right, I am good in the kitchen, so no matter what else could be wrong with me, as long as I can stun people with my food, they’ll still have to like me. Or I’ll poison them.”

He flashed a playful smile and took her hand, giving it a quick squeeze.

“I wish I could say things to you as nice as the things you say to me, though. It’s really nice, Cambria. I mean it. And it makes me want to be better, and to make sure I don’t disappoint you. I just want you to know that.”

“Well…someone just has to balance that out. If you only see the bad, and I only see the good…then clearly we were just meant to be friends, and when we’re together, you’re at a kind of balance, don’t you think?” Lysithea almost enjoyed conversations like this. Where Evan was able to express himself a little. Share his insecurities. When she knew what they were…they were a lot easier to start to fix.

“Your brain isn’t broken…I understand, Ev. And, I love the idea of you just being a vengeful cook for someone who pissed you off…like, ‘Oh, you made me cry? Be prepared to hug that porcelain throne for the next twenty four to seventy two hours…MWAHAHAHAHA’.” She grinned, swinging the hand she now held and nodded fervently.

“You don’t need words, Evan. When I get to see you smile, when I see you smile at me, or when you cuddle up to me, I know what you’re saying. I understand you fine without words, you know that.”

Idly, the senshi again marveled at the fact she had ever been jealous of Evan…she had been so immature back then…and she was proud of herself for growing so much. For growing up and realizing that there were different types of love…realizing that other people’s happiness was sometimes much more important than your own.

“I love you so much, Evan…Thank you for being my friend.”

I can understand you fine without words.

He knew that.

She has managed to understand him when he couldn't manage anything but chirps and mewls and squeaks. He didn't seem bitter about this though; instead, he just laughed softly and nodded. "Yeah, I guess you always were pretty good at understanding me."

He flopped against her and let out a long, relaxed sigh. "I love you too, Cambria. Thank you am much for being my friend. And for working as hard as you do. And for making Zac so happy. And for just being there all the time and doing so much for everyone. You make the world a better place. And I just really appreciate you. Just...just so you know. In case I don't say it enough."

Leaning over, Lysithea placed a kiss against Evan’s cheek. “You say it plenty, and I know. I’ll always be here for you, Evan. I’ll never leave you, no matter what may happen in the future. I’m going to be your rock from now until the end of time, I promise.”

Letting go of his hand, the senshi wrapped loving arms around the younger male and gave him a gentle squeeze. “You have the power to help make the world a better place too now, you know…and I’m honored to be able to work beside you making it a better place together. So…you know you’re far from a useless person, right? I just want to make sure that you realize how special and important you are…and sometimes I don’t feel like I say that enough…but you’re a senshi for a reason. You come from this…”

She gestured around. “And now you’ve come home to it...”

How could he not have confidence in himself after seeing the source of his power? If her world had looked like this…well.

Lysithea was sure she would have been bursting to do what she could to live up to it. “I love you with all of my heart and soul, Evan. And I am so very, very proud of you.”

A faint smile dawned on Evan’s face again, like he was too embarrassed or giddy to conceal it. It was rare for him to be able to take kind things to heart, but it was a slow process and it was one that he’d been working on for a long time, now.

“I don’t know if anyone’s ever been proud of me, Cambria,” he confessed quietly. “I think I’ve been a disappointment for a long, long time.”

He rested against her, holding her hand in his own.

“So I don’t know if you really know how much that means to me.”

He took all of her words to heart, though; there was a glow about him that hadn’t been there before this.

He had something to be proud of, here—something to aspire to. Something he needed to represent and protect and learn from.

He had something to be.
