Never in her life had Cami been so glad to exit the ocean and be back on the island. It was so strange to be standing outside with the absence of rain pattering on her shoulders. To those who had not gone down to the depths with her she would seem uncharacteristically silent. Unfortunately, the world around her was anything but.

She could hear the thought of every hunter on the beach, on every person she passed on the way back to her house. She'd offered Henry a place to dry off if he'd so wanted it.

God. She could hear everyone. One hunter was thinking about how good another one looked in a bikini. One was thinking about a lab experiment that had gotten interrupted. One was thinking things so completely bizarre and out of her realm of knowledge that she didn't understand how to decipher their thoughts.

So she just walked away

Quote:
Henry seemed equally silent, even a bit shell shocked as he followed the other trainee back into town. A familiar path by now, but he'd never walked it in the light of day, with the sun shining down on him. It was different, odd, and given a little bit of time to process what had happened, and what was still happening, he'd find it very uplifting.

The stream of thoughts that continued to rush through his mind even after they'd returned to the beach had been unexpected, and even a bit frightening. He tried to keep his own thoughts from wandering. Tried to just not think. For himself as much as for the girl trudging along in front of him. At the moment he was trying to recall song lyrics.

...you're faith was strong but it needed proof, You saw her bathing on the roof. Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya. And she tied you to her kitchen chair, and she broke your thrown and she cut your hair. It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah...

Quote:

The farther away that she got from the group the more and more quiet everything became. Atlantis had been large but they had all clustered together in a group; Cami's walk through towns was showing her that there was a decidedly close range to this audible-thoughts thing.

Thank God.

Right now the only sound in her head, besides her own thoughts of relief that the voices were becoming more and more sparse, was Henry's singing. Without even thinking she began to sing along. Out loud. "Hallelujah...hallelujah...hallelujah....halle~luuuu~uuuu~jah." It was almost a hum in how absent it was, her brain working overtime.

'Ama is going to absolutely have kittens. And oh GOD I'll be able to hear HER thoughts! s**t. This is going to absolutely wreck me if I hear something like, idk, that I'm not her favorite. Oh God what if Mimsy is her favorite kid? What if she thinks about liking America more than me? I'm gonna LOSE IT.'

Quote:
Cami's voice suddenly chiming in on the song he was trying to fill his head with was startling, and the internal music stuttered, grinding to a halt as he blinked at the back of her head. It really shouldn't have surprised him. He knew she could hear what he was thinking, and he knew she liked music.

The song stopping cleared the way for her thoughts to rush in. Her fears about her mother, insecurities, and Henry found himself reaching out to circle his hand loosely around her upper arm to draw her to a stop before they reached the house.

"Cami." Of course now that he'd reached for her, he didn't know what to say. Comforting her meant he was listening in. It was a huge invasion of her privacy, and he felt horrible for it, even if he couldn't control it.

"Um." Oh crap... "I, um. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I mean, about your mom." He dropped his gaze as he felt his cheeks heating up a bit. You're so much nicer than America. Kind, considerate. Amazing.

You could almost hear the record grinding to a halt inside of Henry's mind as he realized that she was singing along to his thoughts. Cami was tired but not tired enough to avoid embarrassment as she flushed. 'Damn I'm such an idiot...' Blessedly not every thought seemed to make it through or she would have been completely overwhelmed by what was going on in and around her. Only the most surface thoughts were coming out to play and, apparently, Henry's surface thoughts were that she was amazing. Kind. Considerate.

He was also responding to her thoughts about inadequacy in a way that tied her up, inside and out, and made her fidget where she stood. It helped that his hand was in hers so instead of saying anything (out loud) she just pulled him towards her house. 'I am not thinking about whether or not Henry likes me. Nope. Not thinking about itttt. We just needta go inside and grab some dry clothes and warm up and not think about this!' Except of course she was thinking about not thinking about it which was, in and of itself, broadcasting her thoughts about it.

So roughly ten minutes later when they were both dry, changed, and sitting on a pile of pillows and beanbag chairs in the main room, she had to address that. But, cleverly, she thought instead of spoke. 'So you think I'm better than America? I mean...you'd be the first...'

Whatever Henry might have been expecting from his reassuring, Cami freezing up on him hadn't been it. He blinked at her as she did there, fidgeting, until the rug to his hand got him moving again. Frowning, he fell into step with her, worried he'd cried a line, and opened his mouth to apologize. Then closed it as her thoughts came tumbling clumsily through his mind.

It startled him into a grin that stuck with him for the rest of the walk to her house. A delighted, pleased little curl of lips that he had a hard time hiding, so the prices of getting cleaned up, dried up, and changed came as a welcome distraction. And through it all, a reminder to himself slid through his thoughts every few moments. Don't read too much into it. Which was harder thought than done.

Harder still, was not answering that unspoken question by word or thought. He managed it, though he suspected maybe she picked up on some of it. Hard to say, considering the way their minds were working at the moment.

Dry, comfortable again, Henry sat across from the young Sun trainee with a towel over his shoulders. He was just wondering where his way clothing might have disappeared to when her question filled his head and brought him flushing back to attention. "Um." Yes. Definitely. One hundred percent. It just all came out. Unfiltered. She's nice to you and the people the likes, but she's actually pretty rude and selfish, and you're like, her opposite. You're nice to everyone, and your sweet, and empathetic, and really cute, an- oh crap!

Henry balked, cheeks darkening, and he folded forward to hide his face in his hands. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap...

God she hoped this wasn't permanent! It didn't seem to matter what language she thought in (and that was an interesting exercise in and of itself; she'd never realized she thought in Creole slang) the feelings made their way through to translate well enough. Curiosity, a mild bit of alarm, embarrassment, and a sweet sort of warmth that was entirely Cami. She couldn't help but love anyone or anything that was inclined to be kind to her in return but it wasn't what Henry probably wanted.

Wet clothing had been draped over one of the various shower rods in the few bathrooms that the household shared; an easy question to mentally answer without having to really think about it. Cami was bundled into oversized pajamas and her hair had been coiled up on top of her head; she'd need a shower before painstakingly combing it out later.

The sheer force of Henry's answer smacked into her head and made her look just a little dazed. The giggle that escaped from the teen couldn't be helped but it was an absent sort of thing full of disbelief and euphoria. Someone actually thought she was better than America!! It was obvious that she disagreed about the 'selfish' and 'rude' parts but that was not at the forefront of her mind at all.

All there was was a tidal wave of affection as the giggles grew more pronounced until the brunette just fell over wracked with them. 'Your face!' They slowly subsided as she pushed herself back up, biting at her lip, thoughts in a whirl.

Henry would have caught snippets rather than full sentences: '...never had anyone like me before...oh GOD what do I do with this....Ama is going to have a ******** fit....but he's really a good friend....what do I DO WITH THIS?!?!?' Taking a deep breath she shook her head and knew he'd heard every single thought. "God I hope this isn't permanent."

Henry couldn't help picking up on the various bits of overflowed emotion, and he really didn't know what to do with it. It left him feeling fluttery and warm, and it should have helped to calm his nerves, but it didn't. If anything it was worse, and then she was giggling at him, and he was left wishing he could sink into the floor.

~Hmm hm, you made her laugh at least. Shouldn't ye be happy about that boi?~

Not if she's laughing at me, Nicky.

He looked up when she mentioned his face, and it was still very red. Embarrassment and even a little dread radiating off him in waves before he started to pick up on her thoughts flashing rapidly through his own mind, and pale brows creased as he tried to process it all.

Not a rejecting, not really. She seemed more confused than anything else, which...wasn't ideal, but it wasn't the worst possible reaction to his accidental confession. Except, the thoughts started to get a little more frantic, which in turn was alarming to him. Frowning, he rolled forward onto his knees so he could lay a hand on one of her's. You don't have to do anything with it. You can pretend you didn't hear anything at all, if you want.

Out loud he added, "I hope you're right."

The two teenagers were pinging emotions off of each other so quickly and so intensely that she wouldn't be surprised if they both got tripped up and confused by it all. A lot of her trepidation calmed at the light touch of his hand on hers and the reassuring words that hit his thoughts. Blue eyes flicked up to his as she smiled and shook her head, squeezing his hand before pulling back.

'I don't want to pretend your feelings aren't real, Henry, that's cruel. I just...well, you heard me. I never had anyone feel like that about me before. And if they did I couldn't hear their thoughts or I never noticed. I mean the kids I grew up with were like my family so it'd be kinda weird...' She lost herself then and only feelings came through of longing, loneliness, love, for the people she'd left behind on Antigua.

A thought hit her, then, and alarm radiated. 's**t WILL YOU STILL BE MY FRIEND THOUGH?!?!' It was a very loud, very fierce thought.

Well, he would prefer they not pretend his feeling weren't real as well, but he also didn't want to make things awkward for her. Or for the both of them. He didn't want everything to change, just because they were both aware that he liked her a little more than just a good friend. Of course, even as he'd said it, he knew it wasn't possible. This mind thing would fade, he hoped, and he'd stop being able to hear his own thoughts flitting through her mind, but that wouldn't mean they weren't still there.

His thumb had slid over the back of her hand before she took it back. A completely thoughtless motion he wasn't aware he was doing until one of her thoughts blared through his mind with enough intensity to make him jump. 'Of course I'll be your friend still. I mean, as long as you want me to be.' It was said with surprise, as if he couldn't quite believe she even had to ask.

The tension leaving his shoulders finally, he dropped his gaze from her's to look down at his lap, his hands resting there now. 'I know how you feel, though. I've never had anyone like me, I mean, not that I noticed.' Though he was pretty sure it just hadn't happened, rather than someone being too shy to approach him.

Things would change. They had to change because you couldn't just drop a giant stone into a pond and think that the water level wouldn't rise, or that there wouldn't be ripples, or that nothing would happen. But Cami was a safe sort of crush where she wouldn't reject your feelings or reject you when she didn't share those feelings.

Her face colored intensely as she watched Henry jump, her own face drifting downward as his thoughts again drifted over towards her. First they were reassuring and made her smile and then they made her sad. 'I'm sorry I can't make things easy. I just...it's so new...' Her shoulders slumped and she let out a quiet little sigh.

"Do you want anything to eat? I understand if you wanna go though.."

He really wasn't hungry, at least not right that moment, but it was only a matter of time. Especially after the fight and swimming and the roller coaster of emotions. It just wasn't at the forefront of his thoughts, yet.

I don't want to leave.. What would leaving accomplish? It'd just make the both of them feel bad, and that was the last thing Henry wanted. What he really wanted was to lean over and give her a reassuring hug, but he was never a hundred percent of his welcome when it came to that kind of them. Didn't want to cross a line, and now it's be even harder, probably.

You don't have to apologize. You haven't done anything wrong. She should never have to apologize for just being her usual wonderful self.

Henry's desire for a hug was almost sitting next to them in the room and, not even for the tenth time, Cami hoped that this wasn't permanent. As it was she was pretty sure that she wasn't going to leave the house until it either wore off or someone figured out a way to put a damper on it. For the first time in her life (or the parts she remembered) she was acutely terrified of being near Caroline.

But it was nothing all for her to scoot up on her knees, scuttle on over to Henry's side, and wrap her arms around his shoulders. Her head came to rest against his in a way that was very obviously friend-like and nothing more, but still meeting his needs, because she couldn't say no to someone who needed anything she could give.

'Meh. I'm still sorry though.' Releasing the hug after a few moments she pushed up to her feet and spoke not in her head but out loud. "I am going to go be a coward and hide in my room. The house is kinda open to anyone wandering in and I don't want to hear them. You can just sleep on the couch, grab a bunk, eat. Whatever." She smiled. "You're always welcome here, you know."

He hadn't been expecting the hug, an for just a moment as her arms wrapped around him he seemed to be too stunned to react. Then, slowly, he brought his own arms up to curl them loosely around her, squeezing, gently at first, but when more confidence when she didn't jerk back. And through it all, a growing radiating warmth that blossomed at his core and spread out and out to the very tips of his fingers and his toes. He was content.

And then she was drawing back again with an apology. He couldn't help the small smile that followed, even if it was a little conflicted, and if his cheeks were a little on the pink side, well, it wasn't as if she wasn't already aware how he felt about her.

"I might," he began, though paused thoughtfully. "I think I might head back then. Thank you for the offer, but I'm kinda with you on the wanting to hide out thing. I mean, it's not all bad, but I really don't think I need to know what everyone around me is thinking." He chuckled nervously as he also climbed to his feet. "Sometimes ignorance is bliss, right?"
