Quote:
You receive a mysterious package in the mail. It has your name on it, but no return address. Inside is an extremely creepy doll. Realistically it seems well made and well maintained, but there’s something off about it. If you choose to keep it, it seems to always have its eyes on you. Sometimes it seems to have moved from where you left it—and, since you received it, sometimes you hear a strange, echoing laughter. What do you do?

Tobias hummed as he brought in the mail, considering everything that had come in with half-interested boredom. It was difficult to find time off to stay at home, especially with the city going crazy over Halloween -- it wasn't just the magic in the air, though from everything he'd heard there was plenty of that bullshit, as well. There were some absolutely insane things going on, and some of them were landing on his desk at the prosecutor's office.

He was beginning to suspect that the District Attorney was an officer, or at least was somehow aware that Tobias was one, because he seemed to see fit to drop an alarmingly large number of the weirdest cases in the city on him. Oh well. At least he did know enough to know that if the police had caught someone in a mysterious murder where there was no apparent damage to the victim, they probably had the wrong man.

He sighed, and sat down at the kitchen table, finally taking a moment to examine the box he'd found on the stoop. He wasn't expecting any packages, and he didn't know anyone that was likely to send them out of the blue, so it was definitely something of a mystery. A frown crossed his face as he turned it over.

"Eva," he called, looking around for his girlfriend, "you didn't order anything in my name, did you?" There wasn't a return address, so that, too, seemed unlikely. His frown deepened. It was, at least, addressed to him, so he was well within his rights to open it. He pulled out his Swiss army knife and got to slicing the tape on the package, finally opening it up so he could extract what was inside.

"Oh, what." He said, under his breath. The thing that ended up lying on the table was a bizarre doll, intensely creepy and utterly not what Tobias had expected. "Never mind, I know you wouldn't order something like this." Obviously. There was absolutely no way Eva would purchase a bizarrely real doll, one with eyes that somehow seemed to...follow him.

He turned it over, examining the craftsmanship. It looked better made than your average child's toy, and its depiction of a little blonde girl in a frock dress wasn't terrible, but there was absolutely no reason it should be on his porch, addressed to him, with no return address to speak of.

He wondered if it was a threat. He did regularly deal with Destiny City's criminal element -- it could be intended as a warning for him to bakc off on a case. Somehow. A simple "I know where you live" from some criminal he was trying to put away. So he reached into the box, feeling around for any sort of letter or note indicating who it came from.

There was nothing. Just a doll, in a cardboard box, with his name on it.

Somehow, that was worse. A threat at least would be an explanation. A creepy doll that appeared out of nowhere? Tobias wanted nothing to do with that.

"Not unless I was using one of your cards," she called back in a teasing tone. Stockinged feet padded silently against the floor as she made her way through the rooms to where Tobias was, multi-toned dyed hair tossed over her shoulder as she fitted a ruby drop earring into place. The cream sweater dress clung to her figure, dark brown stockings offering little in the way of warmth but adding to her autumn look. She knew if she bent just so, it'd be tight enough across her chest and arse to be nearly unsuitable for the workplace, but when that workplace involved occasional visits from her boyfriend?

Well then. It seemed it was the least she could do to offer some brightness into both their days.

The mauve lipstick accented her warm smile as she leaned up to press the freshly painted lips to his cheek, almost sad that the formula was strong enough to not leave a stain on his skin before she finally looked to see what he'd gotten. The doll was hardly what she would have ever expected to see, nose delicately wrinkling a bit as she beheld it.

"Oh, that is... interesting," she started carefully, navy eyes flickering back up at Tobias to gauge his reaction. "Was there a card? Is it a gift..?" Not that she would really expect for someone to send him a doll, but the craftsmanship seemed fine enough, and the apparent age of the thing--from her brief look--seemed to mark it an antique in her opinion. Yet it's design was... odd. Not that she could entirely put a finger on why she felt so uneased by it.

Or rather, by how it seemed to keep staring at Tobias. She tapped her nails lightly against the box, noting that there wasn't a return address, yet there was his name and address written on the paper, clear as day, in a handwriting she wasn't familiar with. The little hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and she shivered, shoving the thoughts away before reaching for the doll. "May I? I'm curious if it has the manufacturer or creator written on it somewhere. If it's a newer doll made up to be older, it might just be a prank."

That seemed to her a reasonable explanation for it all, right? A silly, harmless prank. Perhaps even from one of his co-workers, or... well. Something. Aware of his job as a prosecutor, she didn't want to dwell on the idea that the doll could have any connection to a case, though her adoration of horror movies and the supernatural made her mind spin creepy crawly alternatives, none of which she wanted to dwell on for a real life scenario. Not in this city with monsters and freaks and... ugh. Instead, she forced a smile on to her face, a cheeky thing as she nudged him lightly with her elbow. "Maybe you have a secret admirer wanting to give you a gift? Or someone wants you to put in donations towards a new haunted house. Maybe we can use this to start our own creepy collection and open a horror house of our own."

"No card, no note, no return address, just....this thing," Tobias said, and he exhaled unhappily. At her request, he offered it to her, to let her check it for any kind of manufacturer's mark. "Antiques like this aren't exactly my specialty, but maybe there's something to be found."

He turned the box over one last time, and then shook his head and set it back down. "No, you're probably right. A prank, of some sort." Then, he gave her a playful grin. "And if it is some kind of admirer, I'm sure they could never measure up to you, anyway. No reason to do anything with it but put it back in the box. And maybe throw it away."
