Prompt - Tombstone
While making your way through Destiny City, you wind up taking a path you’ve never taken before. Maybe you’re following directions, maybe you got lost, maybe you were just looking for a shortcut—things were going good, until you wind up needing to pass through a graveyard. It seems normal enough—until you pass by a grave and get powerful chill down your spine. When you stop and look at it, you see the gravestone has your name; beneath it, your birthday and today’s date. If you leave and return, the gravestone remains, but the name and dates look like they’ve been clawed off.
Jason had work to do that day, work that took him to a neighborhood in town that he'd actually never been to. He was also boasting about how he knew the City like the back of his hand, but finally he had been stumped. His boss had been pretty useless with his direction as well, so he had typed the address into his gps on his phone and was hoping for the best. He had underestimated how much battery life it would take though and eventually found himself relying on his sense of direction.
Which was terrible, because somehow he had wandered into a graveyard. He counted it as a good sign at first, he was looking for a church after all, but as he cut through what he assumed to be their backyard, a very eerie feeling seemed to cling to him. It was the middle of the day and he refused to be creeped out though.
That was until he found himself face to face with a grave and something sent a cold chill down his spine. He had a very powerful feeling he needed to read whatever was on it, but he regretted it almost immediately. There was his name. His birthdate and today's date were written under his name. Something in the back of his mind told him to run and he did, dodging the other tombstones until he finally found his way to the church. He leaned against the door to catch his break and looked all around him so signs of anyone else. This was all probably just some elaborate prank set up by his co-workers. Definitely, always picking on the young guy in the office.
He still had a job to do and with an uneasy feeling he opened up the church door and went inside. All through the interview he felt distracted and uneasy, his mind kept wandering to what he had seen. Even the person who was speaking with mentioned something about it, but he just brushed it off as being a little nervous himself. He conducted interviews all the time, there was no reason for him to be afraid of this person. Yet, he couldn't shake off what he had seen.
When everything was wrapped up inside, thankfully he had his charger with him and was able to charge his phone, he headed back out. As he stood on the sidewalk, fully intending to avoid the cemetery in the back, some curious part of his brain just wouldn't let it go. He turned around the building and made his way back to the tombstone where he had seen his name. However, this time he couldn't make out anything. It was like some creature had come back and scratched the name and date right off. Somehow that was almost worse.
He couldn't stand the idea of walking the rest of the way back to work, so he called himself an uber. Honestly, he should have done that in the first place since he was going somewhere he'd never been before. Really, he enjoyed walking, but perhaps it was time he consider saving time and actually use his car.
