THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

Quote:

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

- 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
- 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
- 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
- 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
- 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

- If you didn't roll one of these numbers, it means you didn't find the right combination and have to try again! (reroll)

Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

Shiki woke up from a nice rest and padded to the door of the room. Several of his foxfires had headed to the door at night, scratching softly. They were not annoying or yippy just seeming a bit curious.

When he opened the door he noticed the notice. An Exam, or test or something. Not mandatory. Well that would have been good if he wasn't sure that they still expected him to take the testing, not for him to just shrug it off and pretend it wasn't a bit deal.

Dressing was a fast thing. Shiki put on his usual uniform outfit, one of several and he headed out to the location mentioned. The location was strange, being so close to the forest they were told to keep away from. Shiki looked at the house, for some reason he saw it as a tree house, since it was close to the trees. It wasn't, no way close but it was in his mind at the same time.

He walked to the house and peered at it. "Welcome to the House."

He stepped inside, looking around, not sure what to do, until he realized he couldn't leave. He was trapped.

The first room Shiki found was a Kitchen.

Cutthroat Kitchen

Steps /10

There seemed to be little to do other than try and move forward and find his way out of the place. The kitchen was a bit creepy, it wasn't clean that was for sure but it was empty which was not as bad as it could have been.

A silent room was a good room. Except he knew there were not always visible things around, nor things that make noise. Shiki hugged his tails to his chest and kept walking, looking around trying to make sure he kept silent too.

Cutthroat Kitchen

Steps 4/10

Things seemed to be going good. Shiki wasn't even halfway across he floor but he knocked over something. The clattering sound made his tails fluff up, his heart start thudding really fast and a small scream of fear leave him. He was so scared. He looked around, hugging himself eyes big and huge with his own fear.

He had to slow down and look around, looking at the floor. A bucket of small bones. That, that was scary but not worth his reaction. If anyone else was in the room he would have tried to find a way to pretend it hadn't bugged him. Instead he just found himself feeling scared.

Cutthroat Kitchen

6/10

Shiki made it a few more steps, trying to ensure he didn't knock over something. He was scared but he was also trying to be a good student. It was because he was trying so hard not to knock something down, that he ended up falling down himself. He landed on his face with a small squeak of fear, getting up slowly. He had fallen into something. It was dark and he couldn't tell right away.

He made it back to his feet, only to find out that he was coated in.. chocolate? He felt himself wanting to start crying. He looked around, the chocolate was humiliating.

Cutthroat Kitchen

Falling into chocolate wasn't bad enough a single time, but to do it again a couple steps later was just down right miserable. He was now in tears, coated in both white and milk chocolate. He was like a terrible mockery of a chocolate bunny. A chocolate fox.

The kitsune snuffled and wondered what he had done so bad to make him have to go through this. He worked to the other side of the room slowly, telling himself not to fall again.

Cutthroat Kitchen

He was almost at the other side of the room, in fact it was his last step before leaving the kitchen that he ended up stepping in something really sticky. A glue pad? He couldn't shake the stickiness off, and scuffing on the floor wasn't enough to do it. He was stuck with one sticky shoe, and removing it was not something he was willing to do. If he did he would end up likely stepping on something.

Lurking Library

The next room appeared to be a library and Shiki walked into the center of the room and turned around. He wanted to know what was going on, and his foot kept starting to stick to the floor so he had to keep lifting one foot so he didn't get stuck there forever.

He didn't know what was going on so he ended up just moving on instinct.

Lurking Library

Shiki ended up heading to the book shelf and he started to pull the books out one at a time. He had no idea what he was looking for. He kept pulling them out over and over until something happened. He somehow managed to make the door open and he rushed to it wanting to get to the next room before the door shut again.

Bloodcurdling Bedroom

It was the final room now. He was in a bedroom it seemed, which was a strange kind of room to be in for a final room. He looked around for an exit and saw one which made him rush over as fast as he could pulling on the knob. The door was locked. He had taken a course on lock picking so he could only hope this was going to be enough to get him out of here.

Bloodcurdling Bedroom

On his second time the small kitsune managed to get the lock to open and he let the door fall open, landing on the ground outside, the door closing behind him leaving him laying on the grass, two kinds of chocolate on him, glue on one show. He sniffled and hugged himself, finally free but feeling terrible. He wanted to go back to his room. To wash. He felt like a mess, if he wasn't coated in chocolate his fur would have been frazzled. His ears were down now though and he didn't look like someone who had won.

He got to his feet only to notice a trick or treater sitting there smiling at him as if this had been the best thing ever. Great, he was a knob.. but he smelled like a candy. "Can.. I go take a bath?"
