Prompt
Recent rainfall has kept temperatures cool but one of the parks can’t handle all the water draining into it. The water has turned it into a strange swamp and, in addition to the terrible smell, people have claimed to see strange floating lights—or, weirder—a strange, hulking figure that seems right at place in the swamp. Some have described it as being seven feet tall, covered in moss and weeds and mud and who knows what else; while no one has been able to confirm this, if you venture too close you might wind up observing something strange, yourself. The park no longer feels safe and if you wander too close you may feel hateful eyes upon you. You may even wind up chased out by a monstrous swamp monster, but if you try to approach him or interact otherwise, he seems to disappear. It’s probably best just to stay away from the park until the water dries up, just in case.

"It should be.... this way," Chibi Almary said thinking out loud as he crept in the direction of the park that had been flooded. A flooded park! It sounded gross, but the stories coming out of it, of lights, and a monster... well, somebody needed to check it out. And if it was just stories, then... why not him?

... And besides, he'd just gotten to watch that really old, scary movie a week or two ago, Swamp Thing, and if there was something like that out here then he needed to know! So he could stay away. After he got a look at it to see if it was really real. (It.. couldn't be real, could it? Not a true swamp monster! A youma, maybe, but a plain old monster? Nah.

"Ugh, it really stinks out here. I guess that's why most people are avoiding it..." Frowning, he looked around, hoping to see Chibi Massalia about - he'd invited him to come investigate this situation with him, but if the stronger chibi couldn't get away from his brother then he wouldn't be here, and... well. Almary didn't want to investigate this place alone...

But he would, if he had to.

Monsters meant trouble.

"Do you think any big senshi are investigating?"

Sailor Chibi Massalia -- old enough to 'graduate', too young to think much of it, was letting Owen lead him down the path towards the park slowly. He generally had not powered as much since the bad future nightmares, and although his family lived, Massalia...

Massalia just wasn't comfortable yet. Not until all was well -- but currently, he knew he had Big Choices to make soon. To 'graduate' meant exposing himself to chaos....

And that meant, quite possibly, corrupting.

He was afraid of all of it, the chibi instead clutching Almary's arm as he looked around.

"What if it IS a youma?"

"Then we fight it," Almary said, trying to sound more certain than he was. They were only chibis still, despite hitting an age where they... could be more, if they tried. If any of them really wanted to join the war properly. He wasn't sure he did, but ... but someone had to keep his Mom safe. She was so tired lately, and either she thought he was old enough to see now, or... she was getting more worn than she had been when he was just a kid.

... He hoped it was the former, he really did. Anything that could make her more tired couldn't be anything good.

"We're not alone, and we can't just leave it here to scare people. We have to do something. And maybe it isn't, anyway!" Though it certainly smelled like something was living in this park, and making all kinds of messes in the backed-up water, too.

Ew.

"What's the point though, Almy?" Massalia asked, clinging to the younger boy. He just wasn't feeling great, and the boy half-hid in Almary to feel some comfort.

"The others should find it. Or Subra and her other friends."

Friends better than him and smarter and normal-er. He could talk to Almary, still though, but Subra was rays of light he couldn't dare dampen.

He sighed, nuzzling before starting. Was it a flash of movement or a tree limb? The air smelled enough to mix with feeling sad and distract him from feeling for Auras, so the boy was alert, eyes wide before he let go.

"I saw something. Did you see it??"

"Because if we don't, there might not be someone with more strength to investigate it instead," Almary said, frowning. He scuffed a shoe along the ground, making a face as it squished instead of resisting his kick. "And even if we're... we're not strong, or good at what we do, or anything like the other people out there," which was true in his case, though not Massalia's. Massalia tried, "We're better than civilians who don't know what could be in this place."

He frowned and squeezed the other chibi's hand, sighing. "We can't let it hurt people." Glancing around, he tried to see what Massalia had seen, but frowned and shook his head. "No. At least I don't think I did, I - "

Wait. what was that light...?

And did he just hear something - like a branch - snap?

"I'm not good enough." Massalia sulked, but let Almary squeeze his hand. The other tried, bu...

Massalia missed the two older friends he had. Had he done ill by them? Or were they tired of a little kid like him?

....A sobering thought. The boy looked at his own feet, trying not to sulk overmuch when the snap caught his ear and his head snapped up, the boy blinking.

"Did... you hear that?"

"Neither am I. Doesn't change what's right," Almary said, then yelped and nodded. "Y-yeah. Yeah I heard it."Maybe this really was a bad idea - oh, who was he kidding? Of course it was a bad idea? But it'd been the best one he could come up with, one that meant they might be able to do something to help people...

Then a figure lurched up out of the muck, green-gray and brown, dripping wet and smelling as bad or worse than the rest of the stink, and Almary had to bite back a scream.

That had to be a youma. And it was coming right for them.

Massalia squealed, a decidedly unmanly noise as he jumped back a moment, nearly hiding behind Almary before remembering to fight bad, and the boy jumped at the monstyer, trying to hit it....

And didn't even come close, smushing facefirst into a slather of yuck.

Almary yelped as Massalia fell through the monster and into the muck, eyes widening as the creature disappeared as if it had never been there. An illusion? No, it.. seemed more real than an illusion. Didn't it? Biting his lip, he moved to help the other chibi up, and shivered.

"Massalia? Are - are you okay? I - that thing just vanished, like a ghost or a trick or something." But this swamp wasn't a trick, exactly. It was just a badly-backed up park, but maybe that was close enough to make it a real swamp, and -

And... what was that light over there? It bounced across the muck and the water, flitting back and forth, like a giant firefly.

... He needed to follow it.

Almary was already moving in its direction before he could do more than gasp in surprise.

"I'm.. I'm okay...:" Massalia murmured, but he accepted the help from Almary, trying to wipe his front clean of mud and muck and ew. He didn't wholly notice Almary going, but he saw the light, and something... Something moving.

"
Almarygetbehindme!" The chibi panicked, and then....

He usede his magic on the moving thing. He had no idea it was Almary -- he'd certainly feel horrible for it when he realized, but the boy howled, a sound not unlike his sohere's calls... And then some other howl answered from his magic. Hopefullythast would stun it so Almary could use his magic, right?!

Quote:
Super Sailor Scout Attack: Call of the Trickster
A Souped up version of Coyote Cry, this attack doesn't need objects to bounce off of. It instead will create an illusion of a second Coyote when Massalia howls, and after his howl echos, the illusion will howl back, like a second coyote joining another. This attack disorients enemies and nearby allies for 30 seconds, and may make weaker willed folks a little nervous.

The light was so pretty that Almary forgot about the monster, forgot about how scared he was, and almost. almost forgot about the fact that Massalia was there with him. That was when the coyotes howled. Yelping, Almary stumbled in place, turned around by the light and the coyotes - and what was one of those doing in a (Swamp) park? anyway?

Wasn't Massalia - was - what was going on?

He yelped, and as soon as he could shake off the woozy feeling, brought his own magic to bear against a shape covered in mud, lurching his way - and maybe mud on mud wouldn't deter a swamp monster, but he had to try!

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: Mud Splatter

Sailor Almary extends his arms and crosses them at his wrists, ‘aiming’ his hands, which are fisted, at a target. Keeping his arms crossed, he flips his palms open, which summons a spray of viscous, gloppy mud that hits a target up to four feet in front of him. The mud doesn’t hit with enough force to hurt the enemy, but if he aims it right it can hit eyes and otherwise obscure vision. The spray lasts for about five seconds at this level.

There's nothing particularly special about the mud - it's just sticky, and tends to glop together, which can obscure vision and make an enemy stagger momentarily.

MORE mud. The monster flung mud at him, and Massalia yelped, straggering and falling backwards in the mud with a loud, thick plop, as he tried to get the magic mud out of his eyes several moments. He couldn't see, but shutting his eyes helped, and the boy ran, trying to blindly hiutthe monster he thought he was seeing as he swallowed crying. This was NOT AT ALL a fight the boy could handle, was it?! He was already wanting home and his blankie, and Massalia whined.

"Mud him Almy! Show this burro the really GOOD mud!"

Wait, the swamp monster was - oh. Oh. ...Oops. Almary dodged swinging fists and yelped, splashing into the muck and trying to grab Massalia to get him to calm down. "Massalia! Massy! Stop, stop, it's me - it's just me, c'mon, I'm sorry about the mud, but it's just me, the monster's gone!"

... If it was ever really real at all. Maybe it wasn't the real monster in this place at all! Which meant there might be something else out here. Something making things to confuse and scare people.

... They needed to get out of here. Anything that could o this was far too much for a pair of chibis to take on.

Massalia swung a couple moments more, before his body went ahead and relaxed. He seemed to shrink, and finally snuffled, hugging Almary tightly as he buried his face in the other boy, mud or not, and began to cry, clinging on to Almary.

"I'm sorry Almy, I thought you were the monsser.." Massalia was beginning to slur words, and the boy cried into his fellow chibi, hiding his face in his shoulder as the rears came.

"I'm sorry I used magic on you I'm sorry I was bad please don't leave Subra and me to go to the Mirror and then leave me like Avior please...."

OK, not the time to break down... But it was happening.

"I'm - I'm not? I won't! Massalia!" Almary yelped, tugging his friend back away toward solid ground, frowning. He knew what had brought that up, he had enough bad dream-memory-things to remember exactly why the other boy was so upset and afraid. And it had been - oh. Well ,they were getting kind of close to the age he thought they had been in that, and...

But they weren't there! The Negaverse hadn't won - not here, not like there.

Right. They needed to get out of here before the monster came back, and Massalia couldn't go home yet. Not like this.

"... Come home with me. We can clean up and eat pizza rolls and watch dumb TV shows for a while, okay? No fighting, no monsters, and nobody's leaving. Okay? C'mon."

He needed to get him calmed down, they both needed to relax... and then they needed to talk. Or... rather, call Bailey, see if she could come over too, and then, when they were all together, talk.

He was afraid of what might happen to Massalia if they didn't.
