The evening was a typical late summer night, even with the official start to fall just around the corner. The warm summer breeze didn’t give hints to the oncoming season change, and the sound of locusts in the park trees were near defeaning. The moon, nearing full capacity gazed down on the park below casting its cool glow on the foliage below and a lone Knight who had found herself seeking a place to help clear her mind.

Newly powered up to a Knight, Hy-Brasil had opted to detour from one of her usual patrol routes to roam the city park. She’d been, well....focused these past few months. Some would say too focused. There was little time spent outside of work, training at the gym and powering up to deal with whatever it was the negaverse wanted to throw at her. Even her most recent hospital visit didn’t deter her, though some friends may have thought that her near death experience should have slowed her down. Quite the contrary. After getting movement back, she didn’t waste time and hopped right back into business. She also spent as much time as she could at her Wonder doing what could be done there and learning from Cashel.

Sometimes though, thoughts tended to become too much. Anxieties that had never existed before sprung up and a need to escape, even in just small short doses was necessary. Hy had found that connecting with nature was usually a good solution for her. Whether it was on her Wonder where she’d sit amongst the tall grasses and flowers, visit local plant shops, or wander where she was now, something always tended to work.

Having made sure to stay in a more remote section of the park, one less likely to be visited by romantics, curious teens, or even a stumbling drunk, Hy basked in the sounds and scents around her. Closing her eyes she sucked in a deep breath before heaving a great sigh, trying to rid herself of the annoying anxious thoughts that were trying to run rampant. It seemed though, that she wasn’t going to be alone for long if a similar signature she felt nearby was any indication. True, there was always the chance the person may wander away, but from what she’d encountered, most liked a bit of company when the opportunity arose.

If ever there was a time where Newgrange could have used a nice, peaceful summer night, today was the day.

He’d been up to his wonder, training for nearly sixteen hours before he’d been allowed to go home, and even then he’d only managed two hours of sleep before his shift at the bakery. Thankfully, he’d managed to slip out a little earlier than usual, but that had only resulted in an impromptu nap and now, here he was, unable to sleep.

So he’d powered up again, figuring that if he was going to be awake in the middle of the night, he was at least going to make good use of it.

There was a remote section of the park that he liked to spend his time when he wanted a little peace and quiet, but as he approached he realized that someone else had already beat him to it.

A Knight, too.

He approached with curiosity, but he wasn’t going to encroach on someone’s quiet time if they were seeking the same thing, but he wasn’t going to pass by and not at least say hello.

It took only a moment to find her and, Newgrange paused. She looked different, but he had no doubt in his mind that it was the same Earth Senshi he’d met once before.

He sought for a name and found it quickly and asked, questioningly, “Hy-Brasil? Is that you?”

As she had expected the signature of the Knight grew closer. It seemed her time of personal ruminations was to come to a stop. Perhaps it was for the best though. There were times when one should delve into the depths of one's mind and other times it was best to just wade on through, holding onto that life preserver as one went.

Surprisingly, Hy had not expected her visitor to be familiar in any sense. In fact, when the voice rode over the choir of cicadas Hy turned and stared for a moment. Her brain quickly caught up and her surprised expression turned into a welcoming smile. "Certainly is." She confirmed as she turned fully to meet him.

"It looks like the time since we last met has improved both of our standings." She laughed lightly. "I am glad to see you again, Newgrange. It's certainly been awhile. I hope you've been well?"

She gave Newgrange a quick look over as if she were looking for any signs of previous injuries or even current ones. Thankfully all of her own scars were well hidden beneath layers of clothing, leather and fur.

Newgrange’s smile warmed as he looked over her; he was giving her the same look over that she gave him. It wasn’t any attempt to be invasive, but he had always been a worrier and at this rate he always would be. “As well as anyone can expect,” he answered. It was true, for the most part; as Newgrange he hadn’t suffered any major injuries, and as Arias his life was going well enough.

“I’ve been spending more time at my Wonder,” he confessed. “I think my ancestor is warming up to me a bit. At least, I don’t feel so unwelcome anymore. But I still feel like a stranger there. He’s not much for talking.”

He shrugged; it was something he’d spent a lot of time thinking about but he bore no hard feelings towards his ancestor. He just wished he could understand him better. Wished he could understand Newgrange better.

“But he’s invested in advancing my training. He’s a good teacher. He cares a lot about the Wonder, so I suppose I’m not really surprised that he’s stayed there by himself for so long.”

Newgrange’s lips pursed and for a moment he could only wonder what that must have been like. It wasn’t something they had ever really spoken about and it wasn’t exactly a topic he could see them broaching any time soon. “What about you?” he asked, smile returning. You’ve been well? And your Wonder?”

"Good to hear." She smiled warmly. "I've been spending quite a bit of time at my own Wonder. Thankfully my ancestor was a pretty warm fellow to begin with so he was more than willing to try and make the Wonder feel like a secondary home for me." The thought of Cashel brought on a plethora of emotions similar to how a daughter would feel about a father. Certainly not quite as in depth as her love for her own father, but Cashel was certainly a strong fatherly sort of entity in her life.

"At least he's taken an interest in you and wants to help you along." She remarked. "I imagine his interest in you has a strong relation to his love of his Wonder, which I suppose is no surprise. I feel like our ancestors must have had a great love for their work in life and their Wonders to want to just...hang around for so long by themselves afterwards." Hy couldn't imagine what it was like to stay in a place by oneself for so long. Spirit or not, that just sounded like complete torture to her.

He turned attention back to her Wonder and she couldn't help the smile that lit across her face. "All is well with me and my Wonder. Things are slowly getting back into shape the more I visit and work on things there. It's fascinating to see the Wonder come back to life, if a bit odd. It's like a living entity in and of itself." A shrug lifted fur to the bottom of her jawline, the soft white fur tickling the skin there.

"Enough about Wonder talk though. I feel like it's been so long since I've last seen you. A Knight now, hm?" She grinned. "Seems we've both been keeping busy. I hope nothing too terrible has happened since our last run in?"

Newgrange found himself laughing softly; even now he couldn’t help but enjoy talks of Wonders. He hadn’t been to many, and fewer had been to his. An overprotective, grouchy ancestor meant that guests were generally unwelcome. Even he had to sometimes fight to feel like he belonged.

“I can’t say that anything terrible has happened. I’m in one piece, everyone I know is in one piece. Unfortunately, the Negaverse and all its youma still run rampant, but,” he shrugged. “That seems to be the same problem everyone else’s been having. But that’s where the business stems from, I think. That and running the business,” he shrugged, not knowing how much was worth going into when it came to his civilian life. “I’m still figuring out all the perks of being a Knight. I feel a bit guilty saying it but,” he shrugged, “I get stuck in a cycle and keep repeating. Trying new things isn’t exactly my forte, so it takes me a little bit of time. But I’m getting used to things, I think.”

He offered another smile. “I’m fortunate to have some good friends. What about you?” He gestured to her uniform. “Nothing terrible’s happened to you either, I hope?”

Try as she might to hold the wince in, Hy-Brasil couldn’t hide the emotion on her face as she felt the stab at the mention of ‘being all in one piece.’ How long had it been since she’d seen Newgrange? If memory served correct, it had been before halloween last year and since then a lot had changed. There was also the possibility that she had lost track of time considering all the happenings. So much had occurred in such a short span that it was difficult to keep track of all the events. “I am glad everything has been fairly smooth sailing for you.” She remarked with a grateful, if sad smile. “I’d hate to hear that more friends have gotten hurt.”

Biting at her lower lip she sighed and shrugged at the question she knew would be coming. “It’s been a tough year. Let’s just say some people I know, myself included, haven’t been as lucky but we’re all still alive and kicking so I suppose that says something.”

“We’ve managed to work our way through it all. So things could certainly be a lot worse than what they are.” God, what a depressing way to greet an old friend.

“Anyway.” She clapped her hands together in a need to break the tension she felt falling over herself. “No need to be glum, right? It’s been so long and I’d hate to ruin the reunion with dark tales of battles lost. I’ve been keeping myself busy in normal day-to-day life. Work, hitting up the gym, enjoying some time to myself when I am not out on patrol.” Hy-Brasil offered a more uplifting smile as she attempted to pull to subject away from the sadder realities of Knight life.

Newgrange watched her quietly for a few seconds, as if he were taking in the nuances of what she said, how she said it. He wasn’t oblivious by any means, but it was always a battle to decide what to say and when. He offered a sympathetic smile instead and nodded. “It’s never an easy balance. Juggling this, and work, and leisure. I’ve been busy with the bakery but,” he shrugged, “Sometimes I feel like maybe I was meant for something else. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but.”

His eyes found some shadow in the distance to focus on. “Recently I’ve just been feeling restless. I thought maybe it was because I wasn’t patrolling enough, wasn’t doing enough as Newgrange, but even when I’m powering up, I feel the same way. I’m not about to run out and start getting into extra fights just to feel like I’m doing something, but I need to find something. Maybe I’ll look into being a volunteer fireman or something,” he said; it seemed to be only half a joke, but it was something earnest from him, in an effort to draw away from the topic that Hy-Brasil seemed to be weary of.

“Do you have something like that? Something you do, in patrols, or while you’re powered down, that just gives you that satisfaction? That you’re doing something, I mean? I figure I must just be teetering on a slump or something. I’m too young for a midlife crisis.” He paused, and added, “I hope.”

Hy-Brasil focused on Newgrange as the man's own gaze flitted from her to something beyond her and then back again as he spoke. He may have missed her nod of agreement, he may not have, but Hy listened respectfully to what the man had to say. "No. I understand. Sometimes I wonder if my own dream of owning a flower shop is worth it anymore." She shrugged. "Maybe our dual lives have opened us up to realize there's more than just ourselves to worry about. I don't know. I wish I had the answer to that for you."

And then a change in conversation came and Hy smiled at Newgrange. "Gardening, but anymore I find myself more interested in just sweating it out at the gym." She paused for a moment. "Funny how that became a new hobby of mine when it started out of desperation to learn how to fight. Now I look forward to my time punching bags and pushing my body as far as I can when working out."

"And, let me tell you, quarter-life crisis is totally a thing. People just don't talk about it. So many of my friends have mentioned struggling with the very same thing we are right now. That sense of, 'am I doing what I should be doing?'" Chuckling she shook her head slowly. "I think it's a natural thing to worry about since we all want to make sure we will enjoy our lives and we're just really starting out right now, aren't we?"

Newgrange found himself laughing softly; he nodded and wore a small smile. “I almost feel spoiled, thinking that I have any reason to be unsatisfied. I don’t know, I’ll have to put some thought into it. On one hand, I feel like I might feel more accomplished if I were out rescuing people in the day to day life. I could be a policeman,” he mused, scratching his chin.

“But then,” he was quiet for a moment, “Perhaps it’s best to have a job with less stress. The things we see, like this,” he gestured between the two of them, “They weigh heavily. Maybe we deserve something calmer while the sun is up.”

It didn’t seem like such a bad thought process; he wasn’t sure if it was enough to shake the feeling that he needed to do more, but even he understood the dangers of running yourself too thin. He had the impression that his ancestor must have; the man had such a tired place and seemed to hold no love for the world—or anything.

He didn’t want to wind up like that.

Newgrange sighed once more, pursed his lips in thought, and then asked, “Gardening, though? I think owning a flower shop is a nice dream. And you have the benefit of bringing beauty to the world.”

His eyes drifted to the horizon as he listened to the distant sounds of a chaotic city.

“It could always use a little more.”
