He probably should not have pushed himself as far as he had, except Nash was never one to sit on the sidelines and do nothing. He wasn't October, for Pete's sake; he didn't just lounge around expecting things to pass him by. He liked going out there and actually doing s**t.

Except in this case, doing s**t apparently resulted in giant lobsters and a trip to the infirmary.

He was asleep now, Nash's eyes closed, breathing slow, deep and even. There was a bandage wrapped around one of his wrists, several more on various parts of his legs, and one smaller one on his right temple from a nasty gash sustained by a certain creature smacking him.

At least it hadn't been too bad, overall.

Deus Ex's island had a lot of little discomforts like no real way to cook, a serious shortage of hot water, dungeon-like basement bedrooms for the newbies (he'd gotten lucky), but nothing had been really seriously detrimental to Kade so far. So far he'd been lucky enough to be bored. Standing at the foot of Nash's bed in the infirmary he wasn't feeling lucky or bored. He was feeling...guilty.

Guilty because he'd gotten the same message everyone else had to come out and help take care of the torrential downpours. Something about the big tree off the coast of the island, Atlantis (hey, he'd believe anything at this point), and returning an artifact. On a whole it had seemed way above his pay grade.

Nash had apparently not shared that sentiment and now he was lying here, more than a little ******** up, in this infirmary bed. When there was probably something Kade could've done to prevent it.

Battling the guilt the brunet moved over to grab a chair and sink down. "s**t, darling, you should've called me. I would've come and helped." Instead he'd been baking cookies with Peyton. Christ.

"I'm not dead," came the disgruntled, sleepy answer as Nash slowly turned his head to face Kade, gaze just a little unfocused from a combination of tiredness and medication. His eyes flickered across Kade's expression, and a breath eased out of him, Nash's usual urge to make a snarky comment not quite up to par today.

He did not want to say he was glad to see Kade, except that he was glad to see Kade. Which made it all the more aggravating.

Nash was too tired for aggravation. He gave a small sigh, a painful breath.

"I can handle things," he muttered. "Or could have."

Contact of any kind was something that was often - by necessity of his own personal rules about Affection - relegated only to sex and the afterglow period. Having never really had to deal with visiting a lover in the hospital he wasn't completely sure what to do. He wanted to take Nash's hand, wanted to just hold on to it to reassure himself that everything was alright and he was here. Whole.

Reasons he did not visit lovers in the hospital were vast lists of excuses but it boiled down to the fact that it was too intimate. Too dangerous which meant that of course he was here to see November because for this idiot he'd break all kinds of his own rules just for Nash.

So he supposed it couldn't hurt to reach out, like he was, and lightly clasp Nash's hand, like he was. "Looks to me like something handled you, darling. And not at all in the fun way. What happened?"

It took him too long to realize that the warmth he was feeling on his hand was Kade's own fingers wrapping loosely around them. Nash blinked, sluggish mind working to actually process this - and the fact that his own fingers were moving of their own accord, tightening, just a little.

It was the medication. Clearly he was too drugged up to be thinking properly.

A laugh escaped, though it was slightly bitter and a little pained. Nash sighed.

"There was...some giant...lobster thing," he said, sounding annoyed about it. "It was keeping us from diving. We were supposed to...take it out, or destroy it, or something, but it kept...coming at us, and I might have gotten a little too close...or something."

He told himself that he was definitely not sliding his fingers against Kade's, except that he was. "And it was not in the fun way."

Nash's gaze flickered towards Kade.

"What are you doing here? Come to make sure I'm not dead?"

He'd only seen Nash's weapon (ha-ha) once and while the whip had looked menacing Kade couldn't entirely agree that it would be an effective weapon. Plus his darling was a bit slow on his feet and it was a close-quarters weapon. already the baker was making mental notes on how they would have to work on that because this was not cool. He didn't enjoy having to worry about someone else.

Yeah, that was totally the reason!

An eyebrow cocked in the way he knew drew the other Hunter mad as he turned slightly to snag a pillow off the empty bed beside Nash. "No, I'm here to finish the job..." And he dropped the pillow a few inches down onto the brunet's face as if he were about to smother him, but he didn't add pressure. Instead he stayed seated, their fingers linked, as he sighed silently. "Didn't you know to stay out of trouble?"

He wished he had more energy to actually take the pillow and throw it at Kade for that look he was getting, Nash's cheeks faintly red. It was almost definitely the medication and the tiredness that was making it that way, including the way his fingers seemingly refused to let go of Kade's.

"Rude," he said, as the pillow dropped onto his head. He gave a squawk of protest and lifted his free hand, nudging it down away from his face and onto his chest, where he wrapped an arm around it. Nash gave Kade a narrow eyed look, his mind feeling fuzzy.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said with as much dignity as he could muster - which, under the circumstances, wasn't very much. "I'm the very definition of no trouble at all. I'm as innocent as a flower petal."

Nash was silent for a moment, then said, "Well. It's nice to have company,
at least."

He was decidedly not glad. Not at all. Really.

The snort that echoed off the sterile floor of the infirmary was one that would have made a prize-winning hog proud. "I really need to brush up on my English," you know, that language he'd spoken since birth, "if that's what innocent means these days, darling." Kade could have told his sweetheart that mustering dignity was completely wasted on him; he could and would shatter it with a well-placed look or comment that often hit its mark.

It was easier than normal with Nash. Probably because he saw a lot of himself in the other man which was both a euphemism and completely literal. Though he liked to think he was a lot more affable than the surly Nash he could admit to himself that he had his own walls and his own ways of rejecting attachments.

Yet he found himself offering something completely intimate. "Do you want me to braid your hair?" It was almost blurted, like it took courage to ask something so simple. "Seems like it'd be more comfortable lyin' around all day like you are."

He didn't understand how Kade of all people kept managing to get under his skin - and stay there - but damned if he hadn't somehow accomplished the impossible. Even now, absurdly, Nash wanted the warmth and the familiarity and the sheer solidness of Kade's presence like a drug, a feeling he was entirely unused to having, and therefore kept trying to suppress or pretend didn't exist.

"Well, you would know," he muttered, which was meant to have more snark than it actually did, because Kade would know the lack of innocence all too well. Nash's fingers flexed, just a little, in Kade's hand; his own smaller, more slender fingers against tanner, larger ones.

The offer startled him, as did the tone that accompanied it. Nash turned to look at Kade, for once his expression incautious, not at all the usual sardonic one he wore, instead something wide-eyed and uncertain - and needy in a way that almost took his breath away.

"Yes," he said, before his brain could catch up with his mouth. "Uh. I mean. Yeah. Sure."

Nash's unguarded moment was rewarded with a look that was almost too young for Kade; it was a smile that was completely boyish as if he'd been given some kind of gift he'd been waiting for all year on Christmas morning. That pure joy, mixed with relief that Nash was in fact okay, was gone almost as quickly as it had come as Kade realized what it was he was showing to the world. He tucked it away, locked the shutters over it, and stood.

Untangling their fingers slowly he stretched a bit from where he'd been hunched over the side of the bed. "Don't go anywhere." His cocky facade was back in full force and effect as the Sun swaggered away back towards his room where he had come from.

Swaggering meant walking slowly which meant way too much time questioning your decisions and actions. Like why he'd offered to publicly braid Nash's hair. Why he was doing any of this. What that tight and yet fizzy feeling in his chest was all about and why it was making him happily miserable. And why did he feel like he was lying for the first time in too damn long?

Eventually he did return to find a dozing Nash and nudged him awake by slipping a hand beneath the sheets to tickle one socked foot. "Get up, Sleeping Beauty."

For a moment - and only a moment - Nash's world shifted completely.

He had never seen that sort of expression on Kade's face before - had never even thought it was possible for anyone to look at him in that way, the warmth of it pulsing in Nash's chest like a heartbeat before it was gone, almost too fast to know if he'd imagined it or not.

He felt dizzy with it, somehow. He'd taken a sip of something electric and alive and now it was making him unsteady. Kade's fingers slipped from his, and Nash felt the loss of them, even as he flipped Kade the bird as he stepped from the room and the infirmary.

It was quiet for a while; quiet enough that Nash had started to drift off, wondering whether or not Kade was coming back - but of course he was, because he'd said he was going to do something and he had. Nash jerked his foot away from Kade's prying ********," he said, cracking his eyes open. "That's right, I'm a mother ******** princess."

Because he was ridiculous and being ridiculous and annoying made him feel more like himself again, Kade bowed dramatically. Hair fell into his face for just a moment before he flipped it back again, the whole thing touched with a level of grace that was almost enviable. Cocky swaggers, long legs, flowing hair, all of this should have been just off and detracted from Kade's masculinity not added to it tenfold...but it did. It was just who he was.

"Highness. I come offering my meager services..." Okay, he couldn't hold it. The words ended on a snort as he rolled his eyes and dropped materials on the little stand next to the infirmary bed. "Okay princess, sit up." With almost exaggerated care Kade moved Nash just a little bit forward so that the pale man was sitting with his back flush against Kade's chest.

Unable to resist temptation fully he pressed a light kiss to the side of Nash's neck before beginning to trawl the brush lightly through tangled black-and-green hair. "I'll have it all fixed in no time."

The dramatic bow made Nash snort, but he couldn't help the small smile that tugged at his lips, as much as he tried to push it aside. It was ridiculous that such an a*****e could be so - well, ridiculous - and still be appealing to him, but somehow Kade managed it.

It was stupidly unfair.

It was also stupidly unfair how Nash's chest gave a little lurch as Kade shifted behind him, maneuvering so that Kade was behind him; Nash could feel the solid wall of his broad chest against his back, slightly distracting even in his drugged state.

The lips on his neck were equally distracting. Nash's lashes fluttered as fingers slid through his hair, his head tilting back instinctively, because it was always a weakness, no matter how hard he tried otherwise. And he was so damn weak to this infuriating, aggravating, frustrating, intoxicating man it was ridiculous.

Nash let his hand move idly to fiddle with the leg of Kade's jeans, tugging at a stray thread.

"You're better at this than I thought," he mumbled.

Having dealt with both his own hair and his sister's over the years Kade was an old hand at casual styling. He could have french braided his own hair in the dark blindfolded with nothing more than a single hair tie and a brush, a fact he would have been proud of if he knew it was something to be proud of.

Kade was definitely trying very hard to remember that 1) they were in the middle of a packed infirmary 2) Nash was hurt and, most important of all, 3) Nash was drugged. In a club scene or something where he himself would've been high as a kite that would be no big deal at all but consent was weird and wonky when painkillers were involved. Kade was many, many unkind things but he would never be someone you could say took you against your will.

It didn't stop him from lightly stroking the edges of Nash's ears as he brushed though. He definitely was not a saint. "Hmmm? Good at what, darling?" His personal opinion was that he was pretty damn good at everything and so he was just a little put-out that there was something Nash would have considered him less than good at.

This felt...

Nice. It felt nice. Even with how hazy he felt from the medication, he was all too aware of Kade's presence, the gentleness with which he brushed his hair, the strong chest he could - and had - almost melted against. And he was even more aware of how Kade's fingers were grazing against his ears, which had turned a little red at the tips.

Nash was very grateful for the curtain that was currently around his bed, however flimsy it might have been. It at least gave them the appearance of privacy, even if it wasn't actually private. But it was also late, and dark, and they were possibly the only two awake right now.

It made it easier. He didn't have to put on a show for anyone.

(He never had to put on a show for Kade, and maybe that was the problem.)

"This." Nash waved his other hand a little unsteadily in the direction of Kade's ministrations. "Taking care of people. You just...you seem to know how to do it, that's all. I didn't...know that was a thing. The hair. And the..."

And the hand holding. And you. He couldn't say that. Especially since, looking back, Kade had always been that sort of person. Nash just hadn't let himself look hard enough to admit it, especially not to himself, of all people.

"...it's nice," he mumbled, and his cheeks were even redder now.
